Background and aims: The encroachment of halophytic shrubs including tamarisk into saline meadows is accelerating with global warming in the northern Tarim Basin, Xinjiang, China. However, the role of tamarisk in the spatial heterogeneity of soil resources in different desertification stages remains unclear. Methods: The influences of tamarisk on soil resources were assessed via soil salinity and soil organic matter (SOM) measurements under tamarisk canopies and in interspaces. Geostatistical methods were applied to compare the spatial heterogeneity of these soil properties in three regions representing different desertification stages: 1) a meadow with shrubs, 2) a shrubland and 3) shrub duneland. Results: The highest coefficient of variation (CVs) of the soil analytes and most developed 'resource islands' were observed in the shrubland. The overall variation of most of the soil variables was lower in the shrub duneland than in the shrubland and similar to that in the meadow with shrubs. The distribution of SOM and most soil salinity ions were moderately spatially dependent in the meadow with shrubs but highly spatially dependent in the shrubland and shrub duneland. The autocorrelation distances of the most of soil salinity ions were approximately 6- to 15- fold and 2- to 4-fold highest than the tamarisk shrub size in the meadow with shrubs and shrubland, respectively. In contrast, the distribution range of total soil salinity (TSS) and soil K, Na and Cl in the shrub duneland were 1/5 ~ 2/3 of the tamarisk size. Conclusions: 1) Compared with the effect of tamarisk on soil resource heterogeneity in the meadow with shrubs, that in the shrubland was enhanced due to the larger shrub size and more open and scattered canopy in the latter.2) Although the largest shrub size were observed in the shrub duneland, the role of tamarisk in redistributing soil resources was overriden by those of physical processes due to the loose canopy. 3) The spatial heterogeneity of soil resources is determined by not only tamarisk but also environmental factors, such as the connectivity of bare areas and topography. Cambrian dolostone reservoirs in the Tarim Basin, China, have significant potential for future discoveries of petroleum, although exploration and production planning is hampered by limited understanding of the occurrence and distribution of dolomite in such ancient rocks buried to nearly 8 km. The study herein accessed new drill core samples which provide an opportunity to understand the dolomitization process in deep basins and its impact on Cambrian carbonate reservoirs. This study documents the origin of the dolostone reservoirs using a combination of petrology, fluid-inclusion microthermometry, and stable and radiogenic-isotopes of outcrop and core samples. An initial microbial dolomitization event occurred in restricted lagoon environments and is characterized by depleted δ13C values. Dolomicrite from lagoonal and sabkha facies, some fabric-retentive dolomite and fabric-obliterative dolomite in the peloidal shoal and reef facies show the highest δ18O values. These dolomites represent relatively early reflux dolomitization. The local occurrence of K-feldspar in dolomicrite indicates that some radiogenic strontium was contributed via terrigenous input. Most fabric-retentive dolomite may have precipitated from seawater at slightly elevated temperatures, suggested by petrological and isotopic data. Most fabric-obliterative dolomite, and medium to coarse dolomite cement, formed between 90°C and 130°C from marine evaporitic brine. Saddle dolomite formed by hydrothermal dolomitization at temperatures up to 170°C, and involved the mixing of connate brines with Sr- enriched hydrothermal fluids. Intercrystalline, moldic, and breccia porosities are due to the early stages of dolomitization. Macroscopic, intergranular, vuggy, fracture and dissolution porosity are due to burial-related dissolution and regional hydrothermal events. This work has shown that old (for example, Cambrian or even Precambrian) sucrosic dolomite with associated anhydrite, buried to as much as 8000 m, can still have a high potential for hosting substantial hydrocarbon resources and should be globally targeted for future exploration. Deeply buried (4500–7000 m) Ordovician carbonate reservoirs in the Tazhong area, Tarim Basin, NW China show obvious heterogeneity with porosity from null in limestones and sweet dolostones to 27.8% in sour dolostones, from which economically important oils, sour gas and condensates are currently being produced. Petrographic features, C, O, Sr isotopes were determined, and fluid inclusions were analyzed on diagenetic calcite, dolomite and barite from Ordovician reservoirs to understand controls on the porosity distribution. Ordovician carbonate reservoirs in the Tazhong area are controlled mainly by initial sedimentary environments and eo-genetic and near-surface diagenetic processes. However, vugs and pores generated from eogenetic and telogenetic meteoric dissolution were observed to have partially been destroyed due to subsequent compaction, filling and cementation. In some locations or wells (especially ZG5-ZG7 Oilfield nearby ZG5 Fault), burial diagenesis (e.g. thermochemical sulfate reduction, TSR) probably played an important role in quality improvement towards high-quality reservoirs. C2 calcite and dolomite cements and barite have fluid inclusions homogenization temperatures (Ths) from 86 to 113 °C, from 96 to 128 °C and from 128 to 151 °C, respectively. We observed petrographically corroded edges of these high-temperature minerals with oil inclusions, indicating the dissolution must have occurred under deep-burial conditions. The occurrence of TSR within Ordovician carbonate reservoirs is supported by C3 calcite replacement of barite, and the association of sulfur species including pyrite, anhydrite or barite and elemental sulfur with hydrocarbon and 12 C-rich (as low as −7.2‰ V-PDB) C3 calcite with elevated Ths (135–153 °C). The TSR may have induced burial dissolution of dolomite and thus probably improved porosity of the sour dolostones reservoirs at least in some locations. In contrast, no significant burial dissolution occurred in limestone reservoirs and non-TSR dolostone reservoirs. The Ordovician reservoir in the Halahatang Depression is one of the most commercially prolific oil reservoirs in the Tabei Uplift of the Tarim Basin, NW China. For this study, a total of 94 oil samples were collected from 88 exploration/production wells in this oilfield. All of the oils possess similar organic molecular compositions and belong to the same oil population. Oil-to-source correlation results indicate that oil accumulations discovered in Halahatang Oilfield were derived from the Upper Ordovician source rocks. The homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusion in the Ordovician reservoir in the Halahatang Oilfield range from 90 °C to 100 °C and from 140 °C to 160 °C. The bimodal distribution pattern shown in a histogram of the homogenization temperatures indicates that the Ordovician oil reservoir in the Halahatang Oilfield has been charged twice. Coupling this information with the reconstructed burial and geothermal histories by 1-D basin modeling, the homogenization temperatures can be related to the relative geological ages of 419 Ma to 410 Ma and 16 Ma to 8 Ma, namely, the Middle to Late Silurian and the Middle Miocene respectively, representing the two phases of oil charging and entrapment. The oil migration orientation and charging pathways can be traced using molecular indicators, such as Ts/(Ts + Tm) and TMNr parameters. The overall oil migration orientation in the oilfield is generally from south to north. Therefore, the source kitchen for the Halahatang Oilfield is predicted to be to the south side of the depression. The southern part of the Halahatang Depression, along the oil charging pathways, is identified as the most promising region for oil exploration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How and when the northwestern Tibetan Plateau originated and developed upon pre-existing crustal and topographic features is not well understood. To address this question, we present an integrated analysis of detrital zircon U–Pb and fission-track double dating of Cenozoic synorogenic sediments from the Kekeya and Sanju sections in the southwestern Tarim Basin. These data help establishing a new chronostratigraphic framework for the Sanju section and confirm a recent revision of the chronostratigraphy at Kekeya. Detrital zircon fission-track ages present prominent Triassic–Early Jurassic (∼250–170 Ma) and Early Cretaceous (∼130–100 Ma) static age peaks, and Paleocene–Early Miocene (∼60–21 Ma) to Eocene–Late Miocene (∼39–7 Ma) moving age peaks, representing source exhumation. Triassic–Early Jurassic static peak ages document unroofing of the Kunlun terrane, probably related to the subduction of Paleotethys oceanic lithosphere. In combination with the occurrence of synorogenic sediments on both flanks of the Kunlun terrane, these data suggest that an ancient West Kunlun range had emerged above sea level by Triassic–Early Jurassic times. Early Cretaceous fission-track peak ages are interpreted to document exhumation related to thrusting along the Tam Karaul fault, kinematically correlated to the Main Pamir thrust further west. Widespread Middle–Late Mesozoic crustal shortening and thickening likely enhanced the Early Mesozoic topography. Paleocene–Early Eocene fission-track peak ages are presumably partially reset. Limited regional exhumation indicates that the Early Cenozoic topographic and crustal pattern of the West Kunlun may be largely preserved from the Middle–Late Mesozoic. The Main Pamir–Tam Karaul thrust belt could be a first-order tectonic feature bounding the northwestern margin of the Middle–Late Mesozoic to Early Cenozoic Tibetan Plateau. Toward the Tarim basin, Late Oligocene–Early Miocene steady exhumation at a rate of ∼0.9 km/Myr is likely related to initial thrusting of the Tiklik fault and reactivation of the Tam Karaul thrust. Thrusting together with upper crustal shortening in the mountain front indicates basinward expansion of the West Kunlun orogen at this time. This episode of exhumation and uplift, associated with magmatism across western Tibet, is compatible with a double-sided lithospheric wedge model, primarily driven by breakoff of the Indian crustal slab. Accelerated exhumation of the mountain front at a rate of ∼1.1 km/Myr since ∼15 Ma supports active compressional deformation at the margins of the northwestern Tibetan Plateau. We thus propose that the West Kunlun Mountains are a long-lived topographic unit, dating back to Triassic–Early Jurassic times, and have experienced Middle–Late Mesozoic to Early Cenozoic rejuvenation and Late Oligocene–Miocene expansion. A continental condensate field, with the deepest burial depth (7084 m) so far in China, was recently discovered from the Cretaceous sandstone reservoir in the Bozi area of the Kuqa Depression, Tarim Basin. In this paper, we report general features of this field, including geochemistry of the condensates, their origin, and migration and accumulation. General geochemistry of the condensate reflects that it is an over pressured condensate reservoir. Analytical results by newly-developed high-resolution GC × GC–TOFMS method indicate that the condensate is rich in n -alkanes from nC 3 to nC 34 and in diamondoid hydrocarbons with a high content of adamantanes. The condensate has a high abundance of aromatic hydrocarbons. The gas δ 13 C 2 values in these are −23.3‰, which is characteristic of coal-derived gases. Compared with the contents of conventional condensate oils, the BZ1 well has a high content of aromatic hydrocarbons, suggesting that the condensate is in a stage of highly mature cracking. Analyses of oil biomarkers, carbon isotopes, gas compositions, etc., revealed that the condensate is dominantly sourced from the highly mature coals of the Jurassic Qiakemake Formation in the western Kuqa Depression. This set of coal source sequences has generated large quantities of condensate since 3 Ma, when the study area was subjected to a rapid subsidence with sediments over 2000 m and consequently attained at the condensate-generating stage. Such condensates then migrated vertically into the Cretaceous traps along faults. Therefore, the Bozi condensate field is a typical case of large-scale oil/gas field characterized by late-stage accumulation. Multiple elements favor the formation of this large-scale condensate field. The timing of trap formation accords with that of the condensate generation (since 3 Ma). The traps and source rocks are stacked vertically. Faults connect the source rock sequences and the reservoirs. The hydrocarbon charge is strong and efficient. Thick Paleogene gypsum beds act as an excellent cap rock, favoring the accumulation and preservation of the condensate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
