Agroecological farming emerges among approaches for managing crop pests including the "True" fruit fly (Diptera, Tephritidae). We conducted baseline interviews and field experiments in Eastern Central Tanzania to determine farmers' perception on the approach and verify its socio-economic performance in cucurbit crop production. The performance of small-scale cucurbit farming in agroecological and conventional agriculture was broadly comparable. Farmers perceived the approach as effective and beneficial over conventional farming and pesticide-based agriculture but constrained by its more elaborate/laborious implementation. Still, agroecological farming significantly lowered the production costs. Therefore small-scale agroecological cucurbit farming in Tanzania represents a viable alternative and promising tool to reduce use of synthetic pesticides that negatively impact human health and the environment. Trials were conducted in the Morogoro Region, Tanzania, to evaluate the effectiveness of three Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs against Bactrocera dorsalis over five seasons. Spot application of molasses bait was compared with broadcast sprays of insecticide dimethoate/lambda cyhalothrin (Karate 5 EC) and spot application of a spinosad bait (Success, Dow AgroSciences) plus mass trapping using methyl eugenol, as components of IPM programs for B. dorsalis . Orchard sanitation and early harvesting of fruits were standard practices in each program. The molasses bait was formulated with crude extracts of Derris elliptica , water and brewery yeast waste. The effective median dose of the bait was determined by exposing adults of B. dorsalis to a range of concentrations of crude extracts of D. elliptica in a laboratory bioassay. Each program was applied in an individual mango orchard and replicated for five seasons with populations being monitored using McPhail traps baited with torula yeast. In addition, fruits were sampled at ripening and individually placed in containers to determine the incidence and infestation rates of emerged fruit fly species. Results show that for the molasses bait 9 g of D. elliptica roots powder soaked in 5 L of neutral soap are required to kill 50% of a B. dorsalis population. The three IPM methods did not differ significantly in reducing fly incidence and infestation rates. We analyzed the three IPM methods on the basis of cost-benefit, environmental protection and health safety, in the light of purpose and market focus of the farmer. It is finally recommended that spot application of botanical bait can be used in IPM programs for fruit flies in smallholder settings. Spot application of Success bait is recommended for commercial farmers targeting organic and export market markets. Bactrocera invadens, a fruit fly from Asia, is an invasive pest species across Africa. It appears to continue spreading, not only in latitude but also in altitude. To assess its capacity to infest a large variety of hosts and its competition with other fruit fly species, a study along an altitudinal gradient was conducted. At low altitudes, the high abundance in the field and high infestation of B. invadens in different fruit species make it a serious pest. At high altitudes, colonization has started and B. invadens occurs in low numbers by reproducing successfully in high altitude fruits. Overall the abundance and infestation of B. invadens is influenced by its direct competitor Ceratitis rosa and the presence of its preferred host species. C. rosa is still the dominant species in temperate fruits grown at high altitude. Ceratitis cosyra, however, is negatively affected by B. invadens, this species seems to have shifted hosts to avoid competition. The broad host range and competitive potential of B. invadens increase the risk for further spread not only to higher areas, but also to subtropical regions. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The incidence and host range of the melon fruit fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae, was studied in the Morogoro Region of Central Tanzania between October 2004 and October 2006. Occurrence was limited to low to medium altitude locations. Populations reached a peak in the dry season, between July and September. Host plants belonged mostly to the Cucurbitaceae family, with non-cucurbit hosts being infested occasionally and at low infestation rate. Highly preferred cucurbit hosts were cucumber (Cucumis sativus), melon (Cucumis melo) and watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), while Momordica cf trifoliata was the most important wild host. Bactrocera cucurbitae appeared to dominate most indigenous cucurbit infesters, with the exception of Dacus ciliatus which was still dominant in some cucurbitaceous spp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Bactrocera latifrons is a newly invasive pest species in eastern Africa. Surveys to determine the spatial and temporal abundance of this fruit fly in the Morogoro Region, Eastern Central Tanzania, were conducted from April 2007 to March 2008. The surveys involved trapping of adult flies and collection of host fruits to determine the emergence of adults. The results indicated that the population of B. latifrons was generally low but that adult flies were present throughout the survey period. The population of B. latifrons based on infestation rates and incidence in host fruits, seems to be relatively high during the wet seasons, probably because of availability of many hosts. However, the population of the pest as determined by trapping, indicated a low population but without a specific pattern. The pest shows minimal response to the used attractants. The surveys further indicate that B. latifrons is more abundant in low to medium altitude areas compared to high altitude areas. The results indicate that, because of its low population, B. latifrons might be a minor pest. Results further suggest the possibility of establishing B. latifrons free areas where export valued solanaceous crops can be grown, but further research over longer periods would be needed to establish this. The host range of major fruit fly pests in Central Tanzania was evaluated from October 2004 to October 2006. Samples of 48 potential hosts were collected and incubated for fruit fly emergence. Bactrocera invadens was the dominant species in incidence expressed as the ratio of infested to total number samples collected, as well as infestation rate, expressed as number of flies emerging per unit weight. Eight new host fruits are reported. Infestation by native pests, such as Ceratitis capitata and C. cosyra, was minor compared to B. invadens. Ceratitis rosa was the dominant species in temperate fruits, and Cucurbitaceae were mainly infested by Bactrocera cucurbitae, a specialized cucurbit feeder. Among commercial fruits, high infestation incidences were observed in mango and guava, but they decreased throughout the fruiting season. Low infestation rates were observed in all Citrus species and in avocado, indicating these fruits as poor hosts for the studied fruit fly pests in this region. Widespread availability and abundance of fruit species studied here ensures year-round breeding of B. invadens. Seasonal infestation differs, with mango being the most important host in October to January, while guava being important from February to August. Tropical almond showed very high incidence and infestation rate for B. invadens and might act as an important reservoir host, bridging the fruiting seasons of mango and guava. The temporal occurrence of the invasive and economically important pest fruit fly, Bactrocera invadens was studied in three agro-ecological areas of Morogoro Region, central Tanzania, during 2004–2005. Weekly and monthly trappings were carried out with methyl eugenol, protein bait and synthetic food attractant. Bactrocera invadens was permanently present at low and mid-altitudes (380–520 m a.s.l.) with peak periods coinciding with the fruiting season of mango ( Mangifera indica) and guava ( Psidium guajava). At high altitude (1650 m a.s.l.) its incidence was only temporal and apparently the result of dispersal from lower altitudes after the mango fruiting season. Rearing results showed mango, loquat ( Eriobotrya japonica), guava and grapefruit ( Citrus × paradisi) to be the favoured commercial host fruits.
