2. Learning Experience Reigns -- Taiwanese Learners' Motivation in Learning Eight Additional Languages as Compared to English

- Abstract
Informed by Dörnyei's L2 Motivational Self System and intended to fill a gap in learning motivation research on languages other than English (LOTEs), this study investigated learners' motivation for three language clusters -- Southeast Asian (Vietnamese, Thai and Malay), Northeast Asian (Japanese and Korean) and European (German, Spanish and French) -- and compared the results against the same learners' English learning motivation. Regression analyses revealed that for all three language groups, the strongest predictors of intended effort were learning experience, followed by ideal self and culture/community interest. Ought-to self and instrumentality, both promotional and preventive, were ruled out in all three LOTE regression models. The significance of learning experience as a motivational predictor was comparatively new in LOTE-related findings. These learners' English learning motivation presented a similar but more complicated picture, with predictive variables being, in descending order, learning attitude, culture/community interest, learning experience, ideal self and instrumentality. While externally imposed motivators played a role in English, they did not do so for the same learners in LOTE situations. Discrepancies with earlier results concerning LOTE motivation as well as with similar learner populations are discussed. Implications for both pedagogical practice and the theoretical development of foreign language motivation are suggested.

- Abstract
Help seeking is regarded as an important learning strategy that reflects students' metacognitive and domainspecific skills and knowledge. This study developed a proactive online discussion forum that strengthens social networks in an online discussion forum to facilitate help seeking for problem solving. This forum allowed students to proactively invite friends or potential experts to participate in problem solving. A quasiexperimental approach was conducted with a sample of 37 students. The students' behaviors of problem solving, ego network patterns of problem solving, and perceptions of help seeking were addressed as dependent variables to assess the effect of the proactive online discussion forum. The analysis results revealed that the students in the experimental group exhibited more frequent participation in problem solving, and showed more positive attitudes towards help seeking. The results also indicated that the experimental group demonstrated more in-depth participation patterns of ego networks. The findings provide some evidence for the effectiveness of the proactive online discussion forum in terms of promoting students' participation in problem solving and their attitudes towards help seeking.

- Abstract
In 2011, the Taiwanese Government began a campaign to encourage new immigrants to teach their native languages (heritage languages) to their children. However, these heritage languages are seldom used in cross-national families and the effectiveness of formal heritage language courses in Taiwan has yet to be explored. The present study examines the influence of school and family support on children's attitudes towards heritage language learning. A structured questionnaire was developed and sent to 234 primary school pupils whose mothers are Vietnamese and fathers are Taiwanese. Results revealed that: (1) the immigrant mothers who speak Vietnamese at home with their children increased their children's motivation to learn Vietnamese as a heritage language; (2) the pupils reported that they received limited school support in their Vietnamese courses; and (3) the children who live with their immigrant parents are more motivated to learn Vietnamese than those who do not. The implications of these findings are discussed.

- Abstract
As Mandarin gains popularity in the whole world, Mandarin education becomes valued by the countries all over the world. The United Nations classifies Mandarin as one of the six major languages, and the number of people who learn Mandarin in the whole world grows with each passing day as the mainland China market grows. This study discusses the learning effects of using multimedia assisted instruction on Mandarin vocabulary for Vietnamese students, taking into account the difficulty that Vietnamese students encountered during the learning process of multimedia assisted instruction. Culture is the soul of a nation and literature can shed light on the understanding of a nation's culture. This paper focuses on the translation of Taiwanese literary and historical literary works in Vietnam, and how it has shifted the Vietnamese readers' perception of Taiwanese literature. Previously, Taiwanese culture and literature were only vaguely perceived, and often viewed as regional literature by Vietnamese readers. However, Taiwanese literature has been increasingly translated in Vietnam in the recent years. This gradually shifts the Vietnamese readers' perception of Taiwanese culture, bolstering their understanding of Taiwan's native literature. With the increasing presence of translated literary works in Vietnam, the culturally distinct native spirit embodied in Taiwanese literature has attracted the attention of Vietnamese readers. As such, Taiwanese literature is being recognized as an independent literary entity in Vietnam. On this basis, we anticipate that Taiwanese culture and literature will become an important research topic in the Vietnamese literary academia that is worth exploring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Marital violence is a global women's health issue. This study aimed to examine the factors influencing marital violence among Vietnamese immigrant women in Taiwan. Method: A cross-sectional research design was used. Snowball sampling was applied to recruit 250 Vietnamese women in southeast Taiwan. Data were collected through a survey from August 2015 to January 2016. The data were analyzed using a regression analysis. Results: This study found that 70.4% of Vietnamese women had experienced marital violence in the past year. Participants who did not depend on their husband's income and held stronger views objecting to marital violence experienced a higher frequency of violence inflicted by their spouses. Conclusions/Implications: The study findings provide preliminary insight for nurses and a better understanding of the situation. They can be used not only to address the factors of marital violence affecting Vietnamese women in Taiwan but also to design marital violence–related interventions within a male-dominated culture. Immigration is a demanding and challenging life event that may cause married immigrant women to be likely to adopt unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. The aim of the authors of this study was to assess the prevalence of health-promoting lifestyle behaviors and their correlates among Vietnamese female immigrants in Taiwan. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 140 Vietnamese female immigrants from November 2012 to October 2013. Measures included demographic information, the Chinese Health Questionnaire, the General Functioning Scale of the Family Assessment Device, and a short version of the Chinese Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile. Data analyses included descriptive statistics, Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficients,t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and a hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Vietnamese female immigrants with better individual health status, higher education from their original country, greater communication ability, better health status of the husband, and adaptive family functioning demonstrated greater participation in health-promoting lifestyle behaviors. Particularly, better husband’s health status and family functioning correlated with greater practices of health-promoting lifestyle behaviors after controlling for individual characteristics and experiences, with 38% of the total variance explained. Findings may serve to guide and design culturally specific, family-focused health promotion interventions to assist Vietnamese female immigrants and their families. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Aim To assess and understand the barriers faced by Vietnamese marital immigrant women who do not regularly undergo cervical screenings in Southeast Taiwan. Background Studies have shown a low uptake rate of preventive medical services among immigrants. As immigrant women may not be aware of the healthcare delivery system in their host country, their uptake of and access to healthcare services might be limited. Design A qualitative, descriptive inquiry design was adopted. Methods This qualitative study employed semi-structured, individual, in-depth interviews of 17 Vietnamese immigrant women. Data were collected from February-July 2011 and analysed using content analysis. Findings The barriers to receiving cervical screening were lack of health literacy, lack of female healthcare providers, negative perceptions of cervical screening and personal reasons. Conclusion The results might serve as a reference for government entities and healthcare providers in Taiwan to improve cervical screening rates; this should help enhance the effectiveness of healthcare services for Vietnamese immigrant women. The findings can also provide a reference for making appropriate healthcare policies for immigrant women in other countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
