The Taiwan power system has experienced serious inadequacies in power supply recently due to high economic growth, hence attracting attention for how to promote the power transmission capability and system stability. At the same time, following the expansion in the power system, large-scale generation units sprang up overwhelmingly. However, the potential exists for damage to the turbine mechanism of such large-scale generation units when they undergo power system faults. There have been more than 10 incidents documented in which the generation unit required an emergency shut-down due to transmission line faults, threatening the operating safety of nuclear power plants in Taiwan during the past three years. Therefore, an improvement program is set forth to study countermeasures against these problems. One of the novel ideals proposed here improves the power transfer behavior by the series compensation and provides the suppression effect on blade vibrations with an MOV surge arrester. Through simulation analyses, the proposed approach performs well in simultaneously solving the difficulties encountered in Taiwan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
