Background: Little is known about the physical therapists' practice and perceptions toward management of pregnancy/postpartum-related disorders in Taiwan. The aim of this study was to document current practice of physical therapy in antepartum and postpartum care in Taiwan., Methods: An exploratory, cross-sectional study was conducted in registered physical therapists living in Taiwan. An anonymized online survey was designed, piloted, and advertised widely from March 2020 to March 2021. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi square analysis and multivariate logistic regression., Results: Of the 364 respondents, 37.6% had experience of treating pregnant or postpartum women in clinical practice. The most commonly treated pregnancy/postpartum-related disorder in practice was low back pain (61.3%). All respondents reported little to moderate level of confidence in their ability to manage pregnancy/postpartum-related disorder. Being female (p < 0.01); working at a regional hospital (p = 0.01), district hospital or district teaching hospital (p < 0.01), clinic (p = 0.01) or physiotherapy clinic (p = 0.01); and having prior experience of treating antepartum or postpartum women (p < 0.01) were significantly associated with willingness to provide customer-oriented service or health education to patients/clients with pregnancy/postpartum-related disorder after controlling for other confounding variables. The most commonly reported barrier was "lack of available training" (81.3%)., Conclusion: The majority of participating physical therapists indicated a positive attitude to antepartum and postpartum care but were not confident in management of various pregnancy/postpartum-related disorder in practices. Aims and Objectives: To describe Chinese women's experiences with "zuo yue zi" in British Columbia, Canada., Background: Women born in China and Taiwan are increasingly immigrating to westernised countries. Many women choose to follow traditional Chinese postpartum practices, also called "zuo yue zi." Few studies have examined women's use of traditional practices in western countries., Design: The study used a qualitative descriptive design., Methods: We recruited 13 mothers who were: aged 19 or older, immigrants from mainland China, Hong Kong or Taiwan in the last 5 years, and caring for infants born in the previous 6 weeks. Semistructured interviews were conducted in Mandarin, translated into English, transcribed and analysed using inductive content analysis., Results: The core theme was Chinese women's novel encounters with "zuo yue zi." The women's expectations of "zuo yue zi" were acquired through birth experiences or interactions with family and friends. The participants struggled with implementing traditional practices because social support and formal institutional structures were lacking. They modified their expectations about "zuo yue zi." Factors affecting their practices were catalysts and deterrents. Catalysts included help from Chinese family members, friends and informed healthcare providers. Deterrents included unregulated paid helpers, uninformed care providers, financial constraints and structural limitations in their new environments., Conclusions: Chinese immigrant women struggled to modify and implement traditional practices in their adopted country when they encountered financial constraints, unregulated paid helpers and varying support from health care providers., Relevance to Clinical Practice: Some postpartum women following "zuo yue zi" believed that the practice would prevent chronic illness and strengthen their intrafamily relationships. Immigrant mothers require nursing support to follow traditional postpartum practices. Nurses can advocate on patients' behalf to increase care providers' knowledge about "zuo yue zi" and public awareness for necessary regulated institutional structures., (© 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Aim: This paper reports on a study to examine the effects of a theory-based interactive postpartum sexual health education programme on postpartum women's sexual health knowledge, attitudes towards sexual health, contraceptive self-efficacy and sexual self-efficacy., Background: Childbearing can challenge marital satisfaction and the sexual life of women, making the childbearing years a vulnerable stage in the sexual life of a woman. Although sexual education used to be a routine aspect of local postpartum teaching, this teaching was inadequate to satisfy women's informational needs related to sexual health., Methods: For this two-group, randomized controlled trial, 166 participants were recruited at a medical centre in northern Taiwan. The experimental group (n = 84) received the intervention. The control group (n = 82) received routine postpartum teaching. Participants in the experimental group were separated according to their learning preparedness, as determined by the transtheoretical model. Their level of preparedness was then matched to different sexual health education strategies used in the intervention. Data were collected in 2003 at baseline and at 3 days and 8 weeks following the intervention. Descriptive and repeated-measures anova were used to analyse data., Results: Sexual health knowledge, attitudes and sexual self-efficacy were significantly greater for women in the experimental group at 3 days and 8 weeks after the intervention programme than for those in the control group. However, contraceptive self-efficacy was not significantly different in the two groups., Conclusion: The longer-term effectiveness of our theory-based interactive postpartum sexual health education programme will be enhanced by matching teaching strategies to participants' stage of learning preparedness.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to examine the association between number of Baby Friendly hospital practices (based on World Health Organization/United Nations Children's Fund Ten Steps to successful breastfeeding) experienced by mothers and breastfeeding initiation during hospital stay, breastfeeding at 1 month and breastfeeding at 3 months after delivery., Methods: The study population consisted of mothers who gave birth to infants without congenital anomalies at hospitals in Taiwan from June to October of 2003, inclusively. A total of 2079 mothers participated in the postal questionnaire survey., Results: Only 1% of women reported experiencing all 10-step practices, while 5.7% of women did not report experiencing any Baby Friendly practices. Mothers who delivered at certified Baby Friendly hospitals experienced more 10-step practices. The level of breastfeeding increased as the number of 10-step practices experienced increased at all three time points when confounders were controlled in the model., Conclusions: This study found a dose-response relationship between number of 10-step practices experienced and breastfeeding. However, very few women in Taiwan reported experiencing all 10 steps. Our findings highlight the need for greater attention to implement the 10 steps.

Background: To reach the Millennium Development Goals, maternal health-promoting behaviours need to be encouraged after childbirth; little is known about the health-promoting behaviour among first-time mothers during their postpartum period., Aim: To examine levels of engagement in health-promoting behaviours and related factors among postpartum women in Taiwan., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted through a convenience sample of 122 qualified women. Participants self-completed a questionnaire and mailed it back using a stamped, self-addressed envelope from July to September 2003. Instruments of this study included a demographic questionnaire as well as three Likert-type scales: the Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile scale, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression scale and a self-developed social support scale., Results: The average overall Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile score was low (mean, 2.83 SD 1.35), with exercise rated lowest among the six subscales. Postpartum women perceived that they had high levels of social support from their mothers-in-law, mothers and husbands. An astonishing 42.6% of women experienced postnatal depression. Based on results of multiple regressions, 25% of the variance in health-promoting lifestyle practices was explained by postpartum depression and social support. Social support was found to predict all subscales significantly except exercise. Postpartum depression can significantly predict self-actualization, interpersonal relationships, nutrition and stress management. All modifying factors were excluded from the regression model., Conclusions: This study validates the theoretical relationships among concepts in the Health Promotion Model. Nursing interventions are recommended which are tailored to enhance women's social support and decrease their depression to promote their pursuit of healthy lifestyles., Relevance to Clinical Practice: This study highlights the implications of social support to nursing practice, especially in Chinese culture which has a strict ritual during a women's postpartum period. Findings of this study provide information and data for service planning and community care to support postpartum care in the communities.

This study was conducted to determine nurses' and postpartum women's knowledge of and attitudes toward the traditional Chinese custom of 1-month confinement following delivery, to discover factors influencing the attitudes, and to analyze the correlation between them. After a descriptive and inferential analysis of 173 questionnaires (121 recent mothers and 52 nurses), a significant difference was found in the women's and nurses' scores for knowledge of the postpartum confinement custom, with postpartum women scoring higher than the nursing staff on average. Both groups held positive attitudes toward the traditional custom. Attitudes and level of knowledge were positively correlated. Results of this study can serve as a reference for in-service nursing education, which should include information about traditional postpartum customs.

The purpose of the study was to explore the association between depressive symptoms and social support in Taiwanese women doing the month. A correlational survey design using the Postpartum Social Support Questionnaire (PSSQ) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) to measure social support and postnatal depressive symptomatology was employed. Two hundred and forty postpartum women receiving care in two teaching hospitals in Taipei, Taiwan, aged between 20 and 35, with no peri-natal complications or previous psychiatric history, experiencing a normal spontaneous delivery of one full term healthy baby, were selected. Each was mailed the PSSQ and the EPDS as well as a short, semi-structured self-report questionnaire requesting demographic details and subjective data relating to the experience of doing the month and depressive symptoms during the fourth week following birth. One hundred and eighty six women (78%) returned questionnaires. Taiwanese postpartum women were less depressed when they stayed in their parents' home and had their own mothers take care of them. It was found that the greater the level of postpartum social support received by the women doing the month, the lower the risk of postnatal depressive symptoms experienced. Almost a quarter (24%) of the variance of the symptoms was attributed to dissatisfaction with parents' instrumental support and unwanted emotional support from parents-in-law. It is concluded that the ritual of doing the month provides valuable social support and may help to prevent postnatal depression in Taiwanese women.

Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of informational support in reducing the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) scores in Taiwan., Methods: Five hundred Taiwanese women were screened during the fourth week after giving birth and those with a score of over 10 on the EPDS were considered to be at risk of postnatal depression. Seventy postpartum women were randomly allocated to the experimental or control group. Only those in the experimental group received informational support about postnatal depression during the sixth week postpartum. Two groups were assessed by the EPDS at 3 months postpartum to explore their depressive status., Results: Taiwanese women who received informational support about postnatal depression 6 weeks after giving birth experienced lower EPDS scores at 3 months postpartum than those who did not receive this information., Conclusions: The findings suggest that informational support about postnatal depression given to women in the postnatal period may contribute to psychological well-being.

Background: Eastern sociocultural systems differ in many ways from Western ones, and these differences influence many aspects of the postpartum period., Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine postpartum women's health status in the wider social context of the Taiwanese family after women return home from the hospital or clinic., Method: A longitudinal study was conducted with data collected at the first, the third, and the fifth weeks of the postpartum period. Five hundred and twenty-six postpartum women were included in the study using stratified sampling from clinics and hospitals in Kaohsiung City in the southern part of Taiwan. The Hung Postpartum Stress Scale (HPSS), Smilkstein's Social Support Scale, and the Chinese Health Questionnaire were used to obtain information about the women's postpartum stress, social support, and health status at each time point. Data were analysed with factor analysis, repeated measures MANOVA, and multiple logistic regression., Results: Three factors associated with postpartum stress were identified by factor analysis: (1) maternity role attainment, (2) lack of social support, and (3) body changes. Furthermore, the level of postpartum stress at the third and the fifth postnatal weeks was higher than at the first. Social support scores at this postnatal week were the highest among the three points in time. In addition, 29%, 41% and 41% of the women at the first, third, and fifth weeks, respectively, had minor psychiatric morbidity., Conclusions: Because the postpartum women's self-reported stress is relatively low whereas the social support is relatively high, especially from the family, this confirms Pillsbury's conclusion regarding the significance of social support during the Chinese women's postpartum period. The study also showed that the three factors associated with postpartum stress were important predictors of postpartum women's health status. Future studies should compare the level of postpartum stress, social support, and women's health status in both Western and Eastern cultures.
