We identified two gall-inducing wasp species infesting eucalypts leaves, including an undescribed species, Ophelimus cracens sp. nov., and Epichrysocharis burwelli , which is a new record for Taiwan. The major hosts of O. cracens were Eucalyptus grandis , Eu. urophylla , and Eu. camaldulensis (Myrtaceae) . We observed failed galls of O. cracens at an early stage on Eu. amplifolia and Corymbia maculata . All O. cracens adults discovered on infected leaves were females, and four parasitoid species were identified in samples collected from two cities, three counties, and four municipalities across Taiwan. Epichrysocharis burwelli was exclusively found on C. citriodora in Hsinchu, Nantou, and Tainan Cities. This marks the first record of Ep. burwelli in Asia, accompanied by the identification of one parasitoid species. The adult longevity of adults which emerged from their major hosts, when provided with honey-water solution, was 5.5 days for O. cracens and 5.7 days for Ep. burwelli . Recognizing the potential damage by these wasps on Eucalyptus production areas in the absence of parasitoids, further investigations of their biology and control are warranted.

We previously identified 10 lung adenocarcinoma susceptibility loci in a genome-wide association study (GWAS) conducted in the Female Lung Cancer Consortium in Asia (FLCCA), the largest genomic study of lung cancer among never-smoking women to date. Furthermore, household coal use for cooking and heating has been linked to lung cancer in Asia, especially in Xuanwei, China. We investigated the potential interaction between genetic susceptibility and coal use in FLCCA. We analyzed GWAS-data from Taiwan, Shanghai, and Shenyang (1472 cases; 1497 controls), as well as a separate study conducted in Xuanwei (152 cases; 522 controls) for additional analyses. We summarized genetic susceptibility using a polygenic risk score (PRS), which was the weighted sum of the risk-alleles from the 10 previously identified loci. We estimated associations between a PRS, coal use (ever/never), and lung adenocarcinoma with multivariable logistic regression models, and evaluated potential gene-environment interactions using likelihood ratio tests. There was a strong association between continuous PRS and lung adenocarcinoma among never coal users (Odds Ratio (OR) = 1.69 (95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 1.53, 1.87), p=1 × 10 - 26 ). This effect was attenuated among ever coal users (OR = 1.24 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.50), p = 0.02, p-interaction = 6 × 10 -3 ). We observed similar attenuation among coal users from Xuanwei. Our study provides evidence that genetic susceptibility to lung adenocarcinoma among never-smoking Asian women is weaker among coal users. These results suggest that lung cancer pathogenesis may differ, at least partially, depending on exposure to coal combustion products. Recent evidence from several relatively small nested case-control studies in prospective cohorts shows an association between longer telomere length measured phenotypically in peripheral white blood cell (WBC) DNA and increased lung cancer risk. We sought to further explore this relationship by examining a panel of seven telomere-length associated genetic variants in a large study of 5,457 never-smoking female Asian lung cancer cases and 4,493 never-smoking female Asian controls using data from a previously reported genome-wide association study. Using a group of 1,536 individuals with phenotypically measured telomere length in WBCs in the prospective Shanghai Women's Health study, we demonstrated the utility of a genetic risk score (GRS) of seven telomere-length associated variants to predict telomere length in an Asian population. We then found that GRSs used as instrumental variables to predict longer telomere length were associated with increased lung cancer risk (OR = 1.51 (95% CI = 1.34-1.69) for upper vs. lower quartile of the weighted GRS, p value = 4.54 × 10(-14) ) even after removing rs2736100 (p value = 4.81 × 10(-3) ), a SNP in the TERT locus robustly associated with lung cancer risk in prior association studies. Stratified analyses suggested the effect of the telomere-associated GRS is strongest among younger individuals. We found no difference in GRS effect between adenocarcinoma and squamous cell subtypes. Our results indicate that a genetic background that favors longer telomere length may increase lung cancer risk, which is consistent with earlier prospective studies relating longer telomere length with increased lung cancer risk., (Published 2014. Few studies have investigated the incidence rate of lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma/Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (LPL/WM) in Asian populations. We assessed the incidence of LPL/WM using data from 13 population-based cancer registries in Japan and data from the Taiwan National Cancer registry. During 1996-2003, a total of 280 new cases of LPL/WM were recorded in Japan and 56 were recorded in Taiwan, with the median age at diagnosis being 73 and 67 years, respectively. The incidence of LPL/WM showed male predominance in both countries. Crude age-specific incidence rates increased sharply with age in both countries, especially in people >65 years. Age-standardized (to the World standard population) incidence rates per 100,000 person-years were 0.043 (0.071 for men and 0.023 for women) and 0.031 (0.041 for men and 0.020 for women) in Japan and Taiwan, respectively. Age-standardized (to the 2,000 US standard population) incidence rates in Japan and Taiwan were lower than rates reported in the literature for Asians living in the United State. A significant increasing trend was observed in the incidence over the period from 1996 to 2003 in Japan alone.
