Floristic composition within a geographic area is driven by a wide array of factors from local biotic interactions to biogeographical processes. Subtropical East Asia is a key biodiversity hotspot of the world, and harbors the most families of extant gymnosperms and a large number of endemic genera with ancient origins, but rare phylogenetic studies explored whether it served as a diversification center for gymnosperms. Here, we investigated the evolutionary and biogeographical history of subtropical East Asian white pines using an integrative approach that combines phylotranscriptomic and ecological analyses. Using 2,606 orthologous nuclear genes, we reconstructed a fully resolved and dated phylogeny of these species. Two main clades first diverged in the early Miocene, and by the late Miocene, all species appeared. Two white pines endemic to Taiwan Island experienced independent colonization events and regional extinction, which resulted in the present disjunctive distribution from mainland China. Ecological and biogeographical analyses indicate that the monsoon-driven assembly of evergreen broadleaved forests (EBLFs) might have significantly affected the diversification of subtropical East Asian white pines. Our study highlights the interactions of biotic and abiotic forces in the diversification and speciation of subtropical East Asian white pines. These findings indicate that subtropical East Asia is not only a floristic museum, but also a diversification center for gymnosperms. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, as of January 2023, there have been over 670 million cases and more than 6.8 million deaths worldwide. Infections can cause inflammation in the lungs and decrease blood oxygen levels, which can lead to breathing difficulties and endanger life. As the situation continues to escalate, non-contact machines are used to assist patients at home to monitor their blood oxygen levels without encountering others. This paper uses a general network camera to capture the forehead area of a person's face, using the RPPG (remote photoplethysmography) principle. Then, image signal processing of red and blue light waves is carried out. By utilizing the principle of light reflection, the standard deviation and mean are calculated, and the blood oxygen saturation is computed. Finally, the effect of illuminance on the experimental values is discussed. The experimental results of this paper were compared with a blood oxygen meter certified by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in Taiwan, and the experimental results had only a maximum error of 2%, which is better than the 3% to 5% error rates in other studies The measurement time was only 30 s, which is better than the one minute reported using similar equipment in other studies. Therefore, this paper not only saves equipment expenses but also provides convenience and safety for those who need to monitor their blood oxygen levels at home. Future applications can combine the SpO2 detection software with camera-equipped devices such as smartphones and laptops. • Delphi method used captured a multidisciplinary perspective for managing LA-HNSCC. • Systemic treatment of LA-HNSCC depend on patient tolerability of high-dose cisplatin. • Strong consensus on cisplatin regimens shows evidence-based practice in the region. • Practice variability due to access, practical factors and areas of limited evidence. To develop consensus on patient characteristics and disease-related factors considered in deciding treatment approaches for locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (LA-HNSCC) based on real-world treatment patterns in 4 territories in Asia-Pacific. A three-round modified Delphi involving a multidisciplinary panel of HN surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists was used. Of 41 panelists recruited, responses of 26 from Australia, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan were analyzed. All panelists had ≥five years' experience managing LA-HNSCC patients and treated ≥15 patients with LA-HNSCC annually. All statements on definitions of LA-HNSCC, treatment intolerance and cisplatin dosing reached consensus. 4 of 7 statements on unresectability, 2 of 4 on adjuvant chemoradiotherapy, 7 of 13 on induction chemotherapy, 1 of 8 on absolute contraindications and 7 of 11 on relative contraindications to high-dose cisplatin did not reach consensus. In all territories except Taiwan, high-dose cisplatin was preferred in definitive and adjuvant settings for patients with no contraindications to cisplatin; weekly cisplatin (40 mg/m2) preferred for patients with relative contraindications to high-dose cisplatin. For Taiwan, the main treatment option was weekly cisplatin. For patients with absolute contraindications to cisplatin, carboplatin ± 5-fluorouracil or radiotherapy alone were preferred alternatives in both definitive and adjuvant settings. This multidisciplinary consensus provides insights into management of LA-HNSCC in Asia-Pacific based on patient- and disease-related factors that guide selection of treatment modality and systemic treatment. Despite strong consensus on use of cisplatin-based regimens, areas of non-consensus showed that variability in practice exists where there is limited evidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The distribution of 16 photoinitiators (PIs)—benzophenone (BP) and its five derivatives, 4-methylbenzophenone (4-MBP), methyl-2-benzoylbenzoate (M2BB), 2-ethylhexyl-4-dimethylaminobenzoate (EHDAB), and the other 7 PIs—in packaged juice and milk was assessed using an UPLC-MS/MS with micro-QuEChERS. The validated method demonstrated robust linearity (≥0.9908), LOQs (juice: 0.006–7.26 ng/mL; milk: 0.004–7.14 ng/mL), intra- and inter-day accuracy (93.1%–110.1% for juice and 66.8%–114.6% for milk with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of ≤16.8%), and matrix effect with RSDs of ≤14.8%. BP exceeded the LOQ in 100% of 136 packaged juice (14.22 ± 7.60 ng/mL) and 51 milk (8.45 ± 3.25 ng/mL) samples, and the quantitation rates for M2BB and EHDAB in packaged juice were 100%. Notably, the 4-MBP in both juice and milk was significantly related to the packaging material. Abstract: Common genetic variants that increase the risk for Parkinson''s disease (PD) may differentiate patient subgroups and influence future individual therapeutic strategies. Previous studies have found associations between PD and polymorphisms located within the leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) gene in ethnic Han Chinese from Taiwan and Singapore. Herein, we performed a case-control study and provide evidence supporting the LRRK2 R1628P variant as a risk factor for PD in 2 separate Chinese Han populations from mainland China. A total of 328 PD patients and 300 control individuals were genotyped using PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Differences in genotype frequencies between groups were assessed by the chi-square test. In the PD group, 17 patients (5.2%) were heterozygous for the R1628P variant. This was significantly higher than for the control group [2.0%, P <0.05].No one carrier of the LRRK2 G2385R variant was detected in all the carriers of the R1628P variant. Our results confirm that the LRRK2 R1628P variant contributes to the pathogenesis of PD in Chinese Han populations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
