The measurement of hypertensive patients' stroke knowledge is an important stroke prevention indicator of health care service quality. The aim of this study was to develop a Chinese version of the Stroke Knowledge Test and examine its psychometric properties, reliability, and validity for hypertensive patients. A sample of 200 hypertensive patients completed the Chinese version of the Stroke Knowledge Test, and 30 of the participants were retested after 2 weeks. The final Chinese version of the Stroke Knowledge Test included 20 items with acceptable content validity (I-CVI = 0.88 ~ 1.00, S-CVI/Ave = 0.97). These items showed satisfactory internal reliability consistency (Kuder Richardson-20 = 0.62) and test–retest reliability was 0.77. The 40% of the difficulty index was in the acceptable range, and 25% was in the difficult range, as well as the 90% items overall values for discrimination were ranged from 0.2 to > 0.4. Known-group validity testing was performed based on the education level, and the result exhibited significant difference (F = 21.21, p < 0.001). The Chinese version of the Stroke Knowledge Test demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties, thus providing a new tool for the future care of hypertensive patients in Taiwan. The rise in the number of hemodialysis (HD) patients underscores the importance of culturally competent HD nurses. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a situated simulation program on HD nurses' cultural competence. This was a quasi-experimental pilot study with a total of 40 participants who met the inclusion criteria from an HD center in northern Taiwan. Participants took part in two separate 3 h education programs. The first program focused on the basic concepts of cultural competence, while the second program involved situated simulations utilizing the Gather–Analyze–Summarize (GAS) method of debriefing. The generalized estimating equations (GEEs) were employed to estimate the intervention effect. The baseline scores were divided into low-score and high-score groups using the median score for subgroup analysis. The subgroup analysis revealed that a significant group-time interaction was identified regarding cultural competence and subscale, verifying the situated simulation's immediate effect. In this study, an integration of the GAS method of debriefing and situated simulation teaching was implemented. The results showed that this approach empowered HD nurses with the ability to foster positive attitudes and demonstrate professional expertise in an organized manner when facing similar clinical scenarios in the future. Cultural competence refers to a healthcare provider's ability to consider cultural factors that affect an individual's health and attitudes toward disease and disability. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are increasingly important in healthcare, practicing culturally competent care strategies to improve the quality of patient care. The aim of this study was to explore cultural competence and its related factors among NPs. A cross sectional study design with a structured questionnaire survey was used. Purposive sampling was employed, for which 86 NPs were recruited from a medical center in northern Taiwan. A T-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient were used for data analysis. The results were as follows: (1) overall, the total score for cultural competence was above-average, with a score of 3.75; (2) years of experience as a NP was found to have a statistically significant correlation with overall clinical competence, with r = 0.23, p < 0.05; (3) there were significant differences in clinical awareness and cultural sensitivity related to the clinical ladder system (t = −2.42, p = 0.01; t = −2.04, p = 0.04). The findings of this study can provide information for directors of medical institutions to design an in-service educational program for NPs to enhance their cultural competence and nursing quality. Sleep disturbance is considered one of the hallmarks of the common symptoms experienced by women during and after menopause. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two different multiple-component, sleep-promoting interventions on the sleep quality of menopausal women. A quasi-experimental study and repeated measured design, with a four-week sleep-promoting intervention, was conducted. A total of 123 eligible participants were recruited from a health center in northern Taiwan and divided into the progressive muscle relaxation plus sleep hygiene (PMRS), the meditative movement relaxation plus sleep hygiene (MMRS), or control group at a 1:1:1 ratio. The Chinese version of Pittsburgh sleep quality index and actigraphy were used to assess the sleep disturbances of menopausal women. The subjective sleep data was collected before, immediately after the intervention, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks after the intervention. The results showed that the global score of subjective sleep quality and its components were significantly improved after both interventions. Additionally, the MMRS was superior to the PMRS for subjective sleep quality. Moreover, the objective sleep indices indicated that sleep latency was reduced after both the interventions. Background: Shared decision-making (SDM) is significantly associated with promoting the quality of end-of-life (EOL). The attitude of nurses toward the end of life can affect EOL care, but there are few SDM-related clinical learning programs focused on EOL. In this study, therefore, we evaluated the effectiveness of an EOL-simulation education program on attitudes toward SDM among nurses, using an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). Methods: We used a quasi-experimental study design to evaluate nurses working at a medical center in Taiwan. We recruited 100 nurses and assigned them to an experimental group (n = 50) and a control group (n = 50). The experimental group received the SDM attitude (SDMA) cultivation program, and the control group did not. After the intervention, all participants were examined in an OSCE to assess the efficacy of their learning. A p value of.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The average score of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group in the dimensions "empathic communication" and "mastery learning", but these differences were not significant. SDMA score is significantly and positively correlated with SDMA global score, standardized patient survey (SPS) score, and SPS global score (r =.92,.56, and.50, respectively; p <.01). Conclusions: Simulations concerning EOL care that incorporate SDM components would be effective for training clinical nurses. This study can serve as a reference for nursing-administration managers who may consider designing SDM-related education programs to improve the quality of clinical nursing care. Background: Shared decision making (SDM) is a patient-centered nursing concept that emphasizes the autonomy of patients. SDM is a co-operative process that involves information exchange and communication between medical staff and patients for making treatment decisions. In this study, we explored the experiences of clinical nursing staff participating in SDM. Methods: This study adopted a qualitative research design. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 21 nurses at a medical center in northern Taiwan. All interview recordings were transcribed verbatim. Content analysis was performed to analyze the data. Results: The findings yielded the following three themes covering seven categories: knowledge regarding SDM, trigger discussion and coordination, and respect of sociocultural factors. Conclusions: The results of this study describe the experiences of clinical nursing staff participating in SDM and can be used as a reference for nursing education and nursing administrative supervisors wishing to plan and enhance professional nursing SDM in nursing education. Background: Culture influences personal health habits and behavior, and healthcare personnel possess different views of cultural perspectives. Currently, an appropriate instrument to assess cultural competence in clinical practice is limited. The present study aimed to develop and examine the psychometric properties of the Nursing Cultural Competence Scale (NCCS) for clinical nurses. Methods: Developing and assessing the scale was carried out in two phases: Phase I involved a qualitative research to explore the themes of nurses’ cultural competence and instrument development; Phase II established construct validity of the scale using a sample of 246 nurses in Taiwan. Data from the questionnaire were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Analysis results were used to determine the reliability and validity of the developed scale. Results: The results showed four factors including cultural awareness ability, cultural action ability, cultural resources application ability, and self-learning cultural ability were generated by exploratory factor analysis, and these factors explained 62.0% of total variance. Cronbach’s α of the Nursing Cultural Competence Scale was .88, and test-retest reliability correlation was .70. Conclusions: The establishment of the tool will facilitate accurate monitoring of the cultural competence among nurses and nursing managers, which can inform the construction of nursing policies aimed at pledge cultural competence expansion. The differences of basic attributes, health promotion behaviors, and quality of life between elderly males and females in Taiwan were compared. Several scales were used to examine the gender differences and the factors associated with quality of life. Regression analysis revealed that gender, education level, depression level, and healthy diet were key factors influencing the overall quality of life. The education level of females was lower, and their depression level was higher; however, females had healthier diets. With regards to their satisfaction in the quality of life, elderly males scored higher than females in both the physical and psychological domains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims and objectives: To investigate the distribution and risk factors associated with undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea among hypertensive patients. Background: Obstructive sleep Apnoea has been deemed a cardinal risk factor affecting cardiovascular event, and the condition is still frequently overlooked clinically. The lack of advanced diagnosis often causes hypertensive patients with obstructive sleep apnoea to miss opportunities for preventing chronic diseases. Design: A cross‐sectional design. Methods: A total of 215 hypertensive participants were recruited from the cardiovascular outpatients of medical centre in northern and middle Taiwan. The Chinese version of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Chinese version of the Epworth Sleep Scale and a portable sleep monitoring device were used for data collection. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the factors affecting hypertensive patients with obstructive sleep apnoea, and a multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to examine the major influence factors for each obstructive sleep apnoea severity level. Results: 81.9% of the hypertensive participants were found having obstructive sleep apnoea. Concerning to the obstructive sleep apnoea severity, 50.0% of participants had mild obstructive sleep apnoea. After controlling the confounding variables, the supine position (odds ratio, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.01–1.07), SO2 (odds ratio, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.38–0.89) and oxygen desaturation index (odds ratio, 2.70; 95% CI, 1.18–6.18) were significantly associated with obstructive sleep apnoea. Furthermore, severe obstructive sleep apnoea was significantly correlated with gender (odds ratio, 0.04; 95% CI, 0.00–0.66), excessive daytime sleepiness (odds ratio, 20.27; 95% CI, 1.58–26.97) and oxygen desaturation index (odds ratio, 4.05; 95% CI, 1.86–8.81). Conclusions: Nearly 82% of the hypertensive participants were found having undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea, and 80% of them were mild or moderate severity. Oxygen desaturation index, SO2 and the supine position were found to be major predictors for obstructive sleep apnoea. Remarkably, oxygen desaturation index was the most significant predictor for mild, moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnoea. Relevance to clinical practice: Healthcare providers should enhance their sensitivities to hypertensive patients at a high risk for obstructive sleep apnoea by actively assessing common obstructive sleep apnoea symptoms and providing strategies to alleviate obstructive sleep apnoea symptoms. Aims and objectives. To examine the psychometric properties of the Menopausal Symptoms Distress Affecting Sleep Quality Scale. Background. Sleep disturbances are an extensive and common problem among menopausal women. However, no unique and specific scale has yet been developed to detect the inductive symptoms distresses that cause poor sleep quality for menopausal women. Design. A cross-sectional design. Methods. The Menopausal Symptoms Distress Affecting Sleep Quality Scale was based on in-depth interviews with menopausal women and literature review. Convenience sampling was employed. One hundred and fifty three women participated in this study. Exploratory factor analysis, concurrent validity and contrasting group validity were used to examine the validity of the Menopausal Symptoms Distress Affecting Sleep Quality Scale. Cronbach's a was conducted to test the reliability. The accuracy of the scale was analysed with the receiver operating characteristic from MED CALC version 10.4.8.0 software. The scale's sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value were analysed to locate the best cut-off point. Results. One factor was generated by Exploratory factor analysis, and this factor explained 49-07% of total variance. In addition, the Menopausal Symptoms Distress Affecting Sleep Quality Scale had significant positive correlations with the Greene Climacteric Scale and the self-evaluation of menopausal symptoms scale. Cronbach's a of the Menopausal Symptoms Distress Affecting Sleep Quality Scale was 0-89. Moreover, the diagnostic accuracy probability of the scale's receiver operating characteristic curve was 0-85. The best cut-off point was three with a sensitivity of 76% and a specificity of 87%. Conclusions. The Menopausal Symptoms Distress Affecting Sleep Quality Scale had good reliability and validity, as well as refined indicators for assessing the tool's accuracy. Relevance to clinical Practice. The Menopausal Symptoms Distress Affecting Sleep Quality Scale is easy to use, can quickly detect the sleep conditions of menopausal women who suffer from menopausal symptom distress, and provide efficient nursing interventions to relieve menopausal symptom distresses, and then improve sleep quality. The professional nursing competence ladder system can effectively inspire nurses' work morale, improve quality of life, and avoid the issue of senior staff leaving the clinical setting. The aim of this study was to explore the willingness to participate in the professional nursing competence ladder system and its related factors among nurses. A cross-sectional study design with a structured questionnaire was used. Purposive sampling was employed, and 696 nurses who qualified to be promoted as N2 were recruited from a medical center in southern Taiwan. The results showed most nurses were willing to participate in the nursing ladder system. There were significant differences between willingness to participate in the ladder system and age, education level, as well as promotion experience. This study emphasizes the importance of intensifying internal encouraging factors and strengthening external encouraging factors to improve participation rates. Background: Culture serves as an adhesive to bind the lives of people. There are no objective, useful tools to assess cultural competence and practice. In this study, we evaluated whether the cultural competence of nurses was strengthened through the Cultural Competence Cultivation Programme. Methods: A quasi-experimental research design was used to evaluate nurses working at a medical centre in Taiwan. They were randomly allocated into an experimental group (n = 47), which received the Cultural Competence Cultivation Programme, or a control group (n = 50), which did not receive the educational programme. After the intervention, learning efficacy of the participants was assessed using an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). The research data were statistically analysed on SPSS. Results: The average score of the experimental group was significantly higher in the 'communication ability and skill' category. Furthermore, OSCE scores and Standardised Patient Survey assessment and total scores were significantly and positively correlated. Purpose: This study explores how parents experienced the surgical decision-making process for their child with a congenital heart disease (CHD)., Design and Methods: Purposive sampling was used in this qualitative descriptive study at a medical center in Northern Taiwan. Twelve parents whose children had cardiac corrective surgery participated in one-to-one in-depth interviews. The interview content subsequently was transcribed verbatim and analyzed by content analysis., Results: Five themes, with 2 to 3 subthemes, were identified: 1) accumulating medical knowledge in a short time, 2) trusting the medical teams but parents needing clear communication, 3) feeling pervasive uncertainty, 4) using self-talk to calm down, and 5) looking for positive energy from various sources., Conclusions: For the parents of these children with CHD, participating in surgical decision-making can be a difficult and stressful experience. Objective: Shared decision-making (SDM) enhances medical care, but an appropriate tool for evaluating nursing staff's attitudes towards SDM in clinical practice is lacking. The objective of this study is to develop the Nursing Shared Decision-Making Attitude (NSDMA) scale and verify its psychometric properties., Design: Instrument design study., Participants: A sample of 451 nursing staff., Intervention: This study comprised two phases. In phase 1, qualitative research and expert content validity were adopted to develop the first draft of the scale. In phase 2, Taiwanese nursing staff were recruited through convenience sampling, and the sample was divided into a calibration sample and a validation sample. An objective structured clinical examination of SDM attitudes was administered to 100 nursing staff to determine the scale's cut-off score., Main Outcome Measurements: Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used to obtain the underlying factors of the NSDMA scale; McDonald's omega value was used to determine the reliability; known-group validity was used to test the construct validity; and the receiver operating characteristic curve was adopted to determine the scale's cut-off score., Results: In total, two factors were identified from the instrument results, which were termed 'empathic communication' and 'mastery learning'. The McDonald's omega value of the overall scale was 0.92. Known-group validity testing was performed based on the staff's participation in SDM courses and experience of SDM, and the results exhibited significant differences (t=5.49, p<0.001; t=2.43, p<0.05). The quality of nurses' work has a direct effect on patient health, and poor sleep has been positively associated with nurses' medical errors. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between quality of sleep and heart rate variability (HRV) among female nurses. A descriptive cross-sectional correlational&nbsp;study design was used in January 2014 to study female nurses ( n = 393) employed in a medical center in Taiwan. Data were obtained from several questionnaires. HRV was analyzed with five-minute recordings of heart rate signals obtained using a Heart Rater SA-3000P. Approximately 96% of the participants self-reported a poor quality of sleep. Compared to non-shift nurses, significant decreases were found in total power (TP) and low-frequency HRV among shift-work nurses. However, negative correlations were found between sleep quality and HRV, including total power, low frequency, and the low frequency/high frequency ratio ( r = -0.425, p < 0.05; r = -0.269, -0.266, p < 0.05). In a stepwise multiple regression analysis, 23.1% of variance in quality of sleep can be explained by TP and heart rate. The sleep quality of female nurses was poor and this affected their autonomic nervous system, which can contribute unfavorable consequences for their health.

Background: The cultural competence education programme for health professionals aimed to ensure that all people receive effective health care, particularly those from culturally diverse backgrounds., Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a cultural competence educational course on nurses' self-assessment of their cultural competence., Design: A single-blind, randomised control trial design was employed., Participants and Settings: Eligible nurses were recruited from a northern Taiwan medical centre with 2089 beds., Methods: A permuted block of four was used to randomly assign participants to the experimental (n = 47) and control groups (n = 50). The educational course comprised four units and was conducted once weekly for four weeks, with each session lasting 3 h., Results: A significant group-time interaction was identified regarding self-learning cultural ability, verifying the education intervention's effect on self-learning cultural ability after a two-month intervention. In addition, a significant main effect over time was discovered for total cultural competence; there was no significant interaction effect., Conclusions: The study provided evidence that an educational programme effectively improved cultural competence in clinical nurses. Aims: To generate a descriptive theory framework regarding the experiences of the cultural competencies among clinical nurses in Taiwan., Background: With the advances in, and the easy accessibility to health care services, frontline nurses require a higher cultural competence to perceive and satisfy the needs of the culturally diverse patients., Methods: A qualitative approach using a grounded theory was applied. There were 30 nurses recruited by purposive sampling., Results: 'Unprepared when encountering different cultures' was the core theme for describing and guiding the process of examining the nurses' experiences with a cultural competence. 'Awareness of value differences' was identified as the antecedent condition. The nurses revealed that they have had difficulty implementing their nursing work and seeking resources that represented situations in which interactive behavioral characteristics appeared to improve their cultural competencies. The nurses managing different cultural situations ultimately learned to tolerate the different cultures and to give patients culturally appropriate care, which thereby enhanced the care quality., Conclusions: This study highlights the multiple layers of cultural competence experienced by the nurses and the understanding of cultural diversity among patients and caregivers. These results will assist the healthcare providers by offering references for clinical healthcare based on the patients' subjectively different cultural perspectives. Background: The prognosis of patients with liver cirrhosis often involves multiple complications and repeated admissions, which may significantly burden and reduce the quality of life of the primary caregivers of these patients., Purpose: The purpose of this correlational study was to explore the relationship between the burden of caregivers of liver cirrhosis patients and their quality of life., Methods: A structured questionnaire, which included the Primary Caregiver Burden Scale, Coping Behaviors Scale, the WHOQOL-BREF, and a caregiver demographic datasheet, was used to collect data. Descriptive and inferential statistics (independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's product-moment correlation, and stepwise regression analysis) were used to analyze data., Results: A total of 113 participants were recruited from a medical center in northern Taiwan. The results revealed: (1) The highest average scores for caregiver burden were in the financial domain, while the lowest average scores were in the physical domain. The highest average scores for quality of life were observed in the environment domain, while the lowest average scores were in the physical health domain. (2) Most of the caregivers adopted a problem-solving oriented strategy to care for their patient. (3) Overall care burden correlated negatively with overall quality of life (r = -.223, p < .05). The caregivers' "self-assessed health", "financial load", and "daily care hours" were significant factors affecting overall quality of life (F = 52.78, p < .05), accounting for 58% of the total variance in the results., Conclusions: The results of this study may help nurses better understand and work to reduce the burden of caregivers in order to enhance their quality of life. Nurses should assess caregiver burden, especially in cases where caregivers themselves are in a poor financial situation or have poor self-assessed health, in order to provide necessary support and assistance.

This cross-sectional study explored the relationship between professional commitment and job satisfaction among nurses. A total of 132 registered nurses were recruited from a hospital in northern Taiwan. A self-reported structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Findings revealed significant differences among nurses in willingness to make an effort and their marital status, appraisal in continuing their careers, job level, and goals and values related to working shifts. Significant differences were found between inner satisfaction and work sector and marital status. Nurses' professional commitment was strongly related to job satisfaction; aspects of professional commitment explained 32% of the variance in job satisfaction. Study results may inform health care institutions about the importance of nurses' job satisfaction and professional commitment so hospital administration can improve these aspects of organizational environment., (© 2015 The Author(s).)

Background: lung cancer (LC) is the fifth of the 10 leading causes of death in the world. LC is in first place for cancer-related mortality for both males and females in Taiwan. It is one of the most difficult cancers to treat and is often diagnosed at a late stage. Patients with stage IV are often unprepared for the diagnosis., Materials and Methods: To explore lived experience among patients newly diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma stage IV within one year., Results: Twelve participants were recruited in this study. Content analysis of the interviews revealed four themes: (1) emotional roller coaster, (2) trying to find out causes, (3) adjusting my lifestyle, and (4) cancer fighter., Conclusions: This study provides new insight into the experiences of lung cancer patients y with newly diagnosed lung adenocarcinoma stage 4. These results will inform future supportive care service development and intervention research for patients with advanced stage cancer.

Background: Incidence and mortality rates for cancer have increased dramatically in the recent 30 years in Taiwan. However, not all patients receive treatment. Treatment refusal might impair patient survival and life quality. In order to improve this situation, we proposed this study to evaluate factors that are related to refusal of treatment in cancer patients via a cancer case manager system., Materials and Methods: This study analysed data from a case management system during the period from 2010 to 2012 at a medical center in Northern Taiwan. We enrolled a total of 14,974 patients who were diagnosed with cancer. Using the PRECEDE Model as a framework, we conducted logistic regression analysis to identify independent variables that are significantly associated with refusal of therapy in cancer patients. A multivariate logistic regression model was also applied to estimate adjusted the odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI)., Results: A total of 253 patients (1.69%) refused treatment. The multivariate logistic regression result showed that the high risk factors for refusal of treatment in cancer patient included: concerns about adverse effects (p<0.001), poor performance(p<0.001), changes in medical condition (p<0.001), timing of case manager contact (p=.026), the methods by which case manager contact patients (p<0.001) and the frequency that case managers contact patients (≥10times) (p=0.016)., Conclusions: Cancer patients who refuse treatment have poor survival. The present study provides evidence of factors that are related to refusal of therapy and might be helpful for further application and improvement of cancer care.

Background and Purpose: Indigenous people who leave their hometowns and move to the city to earn a living became urban aboriginals. During the process of adapting to urban living situations, they may use various coping strategies such as smoking to overcome their stress. Therefore, it is crucial to provide health education including smoking prevention, increasing knowledge regarding of tobacco hazard, self-efficacy of anti-smoking, and adjusting smoking behavior so as to empower their anti-smoking motivation to prevent lung cancer. The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of an anti-smoking program on urban aboriginals in Taiwan., Methods: A quasi-experimental study design with purposeful sampling was employed. A total of 125 aboriginal subjects were recruited from two local churches at Shu Lin area in northern Taiwan. Subjects were divided into an experimental group (n =64 ) and a control group (n = 61). Both took pre-tests in order to set baseline values, and only the experimental group participated for 3-weeks in the anti-smoking program classes. Both groups took post-tests immediately after the intervention in order to evaluate the immediate effects of the teaching program, and a follow-up test was conducted four weeks after the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way ANCOVA, and repeat measure ANCOVA., Results: After controlling for confounding variables, the results showed that there were statistically significant differences in the self-efficacy of anti-smoking and smoking behavior between experimental and control groups in the immediately post-test and the follow-up test (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant differences in the recognition of hazards of smoking at eiter time point., Conclusions and Implications for Practice: The findings of this study revealed that the anti-smoking program effectively improved self-efficacy of anti-smoking, and decreased the smoking behavior in urban aboriginals. They provide useful information as a reference regarding of aboriginal health promotion to health providers. It is imperative that anti-smoking be reinforced for those regular smokers to prevent induction of lung cancer.

The antihyperglycemic effect of catalpol (1) purified from the roots of Rehmannia glutinosa was investigated in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats (STZ-diabetic rats) representing insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Bolus intravenous injection of 1 showed antihyperglycemic activity in a dose-dependent manner in STZ-diabetic rats. An effective dose of 0.1 mg/kg 1 significantly attenuated the increase of plasma glucose induced by an intravenous glucose challenge test in normal rats. Catalpol enhanced the uptake of radioactive glucose in the isolated soleus muscle of STZ-diabetic rats in a concentration-related manner. Moreover, an effect by 1 was established on glycogen incorporation in hepatocytes isolated from STZ-diabetic rats. Catalpol was found to increase glycogen synthesis in STZ-diabetic rats. These results suggest that 1 can increase glucose utilization to lower plasma glucose in diabetic rats lacking insulin.

Sleep, a basic physiological need of all humans, appears to be both integrative and restorative. However, studies have reported that 33-51% of women show a dramatic increase in sleep disturbance in the mid-life years, a time when they enter menopause. The purposes of this study were to (1) explore the prevalence of poor sleep quality in menopausal women; (2) identify the relationship between sleep quality of menopausal women and its related factors; (3) predict the possible explanations of how the related variables affect sleep quality of menopausal women; and (4) provide recommendations for future strategies that aim to improve sleep quality of menopausal women. A cross-sectional, correlation coefficient design was used. Purposive sampling was employed to recruit 197 menopause women from a small town in central Taiwan. T-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression were used for data analysis. The results were as follows: (1) overall, the total score for sleep quality was 5.55 +/- 3.47; 57.9% of subjects were identified as good sleepers and 42.1% as poor sleepers; (2) there were significant differences in quality of sleep related to occupational situation, history of chronic disease, menopausal status, number of chronic diseases, and number of menopausal symptoms (t = - 3.49, - 3.37, p < .01; F = 3.62, p < .05, F = 4.95, 5.35, p < .01); (3) depression and aging were strongly related to quality of sleep (r = .57; .22, p < .01); (4) 36% of variance in quality of sleep can be explained by depression and aging.
