Objective: The association between antipsychotic use and gastric cancer risk remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the association between antipsychotic exposure and the incidence of gastric cancer. Methods: Using a nested case‐control design, a total of 34 470 gastric cancer patients and 163 430 nongastric cancer controls were identified from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database between 1 January 1997 and 31 December 2013. We analyzed the data using a conditional logistic regression model to adjust for possible confounding variables. Results: Antipsychotic use was independently inversely associated with gastric cancer risk after controlling for potential confounding factors including income, urbanization, medications, physical and medical illness, aspirin use, nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drug use and triple therapy. In addition, dose‐dependent trends against gastric cancer risk were also shown with individual antipsychotic compounds including thioridazine, haloperidol, sulpiride, clozapine, olanzapine, quetiapine, amisulpride, and risperidone. A sensitivity analysis showed that second‐generation antipsychotics had significant dose‐dependent effects in reducing the risk of gastric cancer risk in patients with and without peptic ulcer disease. Conclusions: Antipsychotic use was inversely associated with gastric cancer risk, and dose‐dependent effects against gastric cancer were also seen with several individual antipsychotic compounds. Preventive effect of stimulants on the risk of brain injuries had been reported. The aim of this study is to determine the extent to which methylphenidate (MPH) prescription moderates the risk of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Individuals with a recent diagnosis of ADHD between January 1997 and December 2013 (n = 163,618) were identified from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database. A total of 124,438 adolescents and children with ADHD and without prior TBI diagnoses were included and evaluated for subsequent TBI. Methylphenidate prescription duration was subgrouped by the annual average cumulative defined daily dose (DDD): 0, >0 to ≤28, > 28 to ≤84, and >84. We identified 11,463 diagnoses of TBI among 124,438 adolescents and children with ADHD. A Cox regression model was used to investigate whether MPH prescription influenced the risk for TBI after adjusting for sex, age, level of urbanization, seizure, autism and sedative-anxiolytics use. A reduced TBI incidence was observed with MPH prescription DDDs > 84. The protective effect of MPH against TBI persisted after adjusting for confounding factors [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.49; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.47-0.51]. There was also statistically significant difference in risk for TBI in subjects receiving > 0 to ≤28 or >28 to ≤84 DDDs of MPH treatment (HR = 0.88, 95% CI = 0.83-0.92; HR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.72-0.80, respectively) when compared with subjects not receiving treatment with MPH. Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second leading cancer-related cause of mortality worldwide. Antidepressants, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are commonly used worldwide. Available evidence investigating the association between SSRIs use and HCC risk is limited.Objective: The present study aimed to investigate if the effect of all kinds of SSRIs on HCC was the same or not using population-based study.Methods: The nationwide population-based study herein using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database included a total of 59 859 cases with HCC and 285 124 matched controls. Conditional logistic regression analyses were adjusted for confounding variables.Results: All common kinds of SSRIs including fluoxetine, sertraline, paroxetine, citalopram, escitalopram, and fluvoxamine were associated with lower HCC risk, and the findings were dose-dependent (eg, fluoxetine: 1-28 DDD [defined daily dose]: adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 0.81, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.73-0.89; 29-365 DDD: aOR: 0.71, 95% CI, 0.64-0.79; and ≥366 DDD: aOR: 0.55, 95% CI, 0.45-0.67) (P for trend < .001).Conclusions: All kinds of SSRIs were associated with decreased risk of HCC. Objective: Asthma and corticosteroid use have been implicated as possible risk factors for schizophrenia. The retrospective cohort study herein aimed to investigate the association between asthma, corticosteroid use, and schizophrenia. Method: Longitudinal data (2000 to 2007) from adults with asthma (n = 50,046) and without asthma (n = 50,046) were compared on measures of schizophrenia incidence using Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). Incidence of schizophrenia diagnosis (ICD-9 codes 295.XX) between 2000 and 2007 were compared between groups. Competing risk-adjusted Cox regression analyses were conducted, adjusting for sex, age, residence, socioeconomic status, corticosteroid use, outpatient and emergency room visit frequency, Charlson comorbidity index, and total length of hospital stays days for any disorder. Results: Of the 75,069 subjects, 238 received a diagnosis of schizophrenia. The mean (SD) follow-up interval for all subjects was 5.8 (2.3) years. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, asthma was associated with significantly greater hazard ratio for incident schizophrenia 1.40 (95% CI = 1.05, 1.87). Additional factors associated with greater incidence of schizophrenia were rural residence, lower economic status, and poor general health. Older age (i.e. ≥65 years) was negatively associated with schizophrenia incidence. Corticosteroid use was not associated with increased risk for schizophrenia. Conclusions: Asthma was associated with increased risk for schizophrenia. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with higher risk for fracture. Whether the medical treatment for ADHD would mitigate the risk remains unclear. In this study, we sought to investigate the effect of methylphenidate treatment on risk for fracture, as well the moderational role of treatment duration on the risk of fracture, in a large national sample. Cases less than 18 years old were identified from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database with a new primary diagnosis of ADHD (ICD-9:314) between 1996 and 2013. A total of 6201 cases with ADHD were included as the study cohort. The cases were divided into 3 groups according to the duration of methylphenidate treatment (0, 1–180, and more than 180 days). All groups were followed until the end of 2013 for first diagnoses of fracture (ICD-9 codes 800 to 829). Cox proportional hazards models were applied. Compared to the group without methylphenidate treatment, the risk for fracture was lower among the group treated for more than 180 days. The adjusted hazard ratio was 0.77 (95% Confidence interval: 0.63–0.94). The groups treated for 180 days or fewer had no significant difference in the risk for fracture. In conclusion, methylphenidate treatment was associated with lower risk for fracture among ADHD patients. The association was evident only in the cohort treated for more than 180 days. Background: Past studies suggest mixed associations between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) prescription and carcinogenic risk. There is no epidemiological study reporting on the association between SSRI use and the incidence of bladder cancer. The aim of this study is to determine whether SSRI use influences the risk of bladder cancer. Methods: We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study by Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database from January 1, 1997 to December 31, 2013. 192,392 SSRI prescribed individuals were randomly matched 1 to 1 with 191,786 individuals who had never received any SSRIs by propensity scores match. The Cox Proportional Hazard models were conducted to examine the risk of bladder cancer between individuals prescribed SSRIs and individuals not prescribed SSRIs. Results: SSRIs were associated with significant reduced risk of bladder cancer with 0.5, 1, and 2 year induction periods (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) = 0.86, 95% CI (confidence interval) = 0.76–0.98, aHR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.75–0.97, and aHR = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.66–0.89). When examining the effect of specific SSRI, there was significantly lower risk of bladder cancer in individuals prescribed fluoxetine (6 month induction period: aHR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.65–0.93; 1 year induction period: aHR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.65–0.94; 2 year induction period: aHR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.60–0.89), paroxetine (6 month induction period: aHR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.61–0.99; 1 year induction period: aHR = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.61–1.01; 2 year induction period: aHR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.54–0.95), and citalopram (6 month induction period: aHR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.53–1.03; 1 year induction period: aHR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.50–0.99; 2 year induction period: aHR = 0.60, 95% CI = 0.41–0.88). Background: Lower back pain is a very common symptom and treatment strategies vary according the severity and duration of illness. Surgical approaches are becoming increasingly popular with the advent of new and less invasive technologies; however, treatment outcomes are not yet well established on a population-based level. Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) is longitudinal and includes 98% of the population since its inception in 1995. The database includes the ICD 9.0 codes (International Classification of Diseases) of all patients with lower back pain and lumbar surgery; furthermore, all the prescriptions.Methods: As part of a population-based cohort study of one million participants randomly selected from the NHIRD, we analyzed changes in prescription of analgesics 1 year before and 1 year after lumbar surgery; comorbidities, such as diabetes, asthma, osteoporosis, arthritis, depression and anxiety were also analyzed as covariates. A total of 3916 cases were enrolled in final analysis.Results: Post-operatively, the defined daily dosage (DDD) of analgesics decreased from a median DDD of 50.0 to a median of 14.2. In a multivariate model analysis, female, older age, anxiety and asthma were the significant factors for unfavorable outcome (defined by dosage of analgesics decreased less than 50% after surgery).Conclusions: The analgesics significantly decreased for patients received lumbar surgeries, implying the decreased of pain. In addition, co-morbidity factors were identified by the failure for analgesics reduction, such as female, older age, anxiety and asthma. Background: The co-primary aims are: 1) to compare the risk of fracture between adults with bipolar disorder and those without bipolar disorder; and 2) to assess whether lithium, anticonvulsants and antipsychotics reduce risk of fracture among individuals with bipolar disorder.Methods: The analysis herein is a population-based retrospective cohort study, utilizing the National Health Insurance (NHI) medical claims data collected between 1997 and 2013 in Taiwan. We identified 3705 cases with incident diagnoses of bipolar disorder during study period and 37,050 matched controls without bipolar diagnoses. Incident diagnosis of fracture was operationalized as any bone fracture after the diagnosis of bipolar disorder or after the matched index date for controls.Results: Bipolar patients had significantly higher risk of facture when compared to matched controls (17.6% versus 11.7%, respectively p<0.001). The hazard ratio (HR) was 1.33 (95% confidence interval [CI]＝1.23-1.48, p<0.001) after adjusting for covariates. Persons with bipolar disorder and a prior history of psychiatric hospitalization were had higher risk for bone fracture than those without prior history of psychiatric hospitalization when compared to match controls. Higher cumulative dose of antipsychotics or mood stabilizers did not increase the risk of fracture.Limitations: The diagnoses of bipolar disorder were not confirmed with structured clinical interview. Drug adherence, exact exposure dosage, smoking, lifestyle, nutrition and exercise habits were unable to be assessed in our dataset.Conclusions: Bipolar disorder is associated with increased risk of fracture, and higher cumulative dose of mood stabilizers and antipsychotics did not further increase the risk of fracture. Background: Experimental evidence indicates that serotonin is associated with both proliferative and pro-carcinogenic effects on colorectal tumors. The present study aims to investigate the associations between antidepressant use and colorectal cancer in an epidemiological sample.Methods: We conducted a population-based case-control study utilizing Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). We identified 49,342 cases with colorectal cancer and 240,985 controls between 1997 and 2008. We conducted conditional logistic regression analyses to assess the association between antidepressant use and colorectal cancer risk. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess whether genotoxic antidepressants (i.e. antidepressants which may exert procarcinogenic effects) would increase risk for colorectal cancer.Results: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (adjusted OR=1.00, 95% CI=0.94-1.06), tricyclic antidepressants, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, and serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitors were not associated with increased incidence of colorectal cancer. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors were, however, associated with an increased incidence of colorectal cancer (adjusted OR=1.22, 95% CI=1.06-1.41). Higher cumulative dose of mirtazapine was associated with a decreased incidence of colorectal cancer (adjusted OR=0.39, 95% CI=0.17-0.90). A small sample size of individuals who received mirtazapine, however, precludes definitive conclusions regarding protective effects with mirtazapine.Limitations: We could not discern the effects of obesity and other risk factors for colorectal cancer from the NHIRD.Conclusions: Contemporary first-line antidepressants (i.e. SSRI, SNRI), as well as older agents (i.e. TCA), are not associated with increased incidence of colorectal cancer. Purpose: Benzodiazepines are commonly prescribed globally. We hypothesize that gender stereotypes influence benzodiazepine prescriptions insofar as male prescribers are more likely to prescribe benzodiazepines to female patients., Methods: Our nationwide cohort study included 2,127,441 patients with a psychiatric disorder (ICD-9 codes 290-319) and 38,932 prescribers as part of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (1997-2013). We evaluated the effects of patient and prescriber gender on the proportion of patients prescribed benzodiazepines and the cumulative dosage of benzodiazepine prescription (mg) using generalized estimating equation and general linear models., Results: The proportion of patients prescribed benzodiazepines was higher among male (vs. female) prescribers [odds ratio (OR) = 1.06, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.05-1.07] and among female (vs. male) patients (OR = 1.08, 95% CI = 1.08-1.09). Similarly, male prescriber gender (β = 10,292.2, SE = 1265.5, p < 0.001) and female patient gender (β = 7913.7, SE = 627.1, p < 0.001) predicted higher cumulative dosages of benzodiazepine prescription. Mean cumulative dosage was highest among female patients seen by male prescribers (β = 4283.7, SE = 717.6, p < 0.001). The results were consistent in sensitivity analyses of patients with anxiety disorder (n = 1,632,363), major depression (n = 1,122,796), or chronic administration (n = 1,981,819), and prescribers with psychiatrists (n = 1276), and non-psychiatrists (n = 33,268)., Conclusions: Male prescribers were more likely to prescribe benzodiazepines to female patients relative to male patients. This gender bias in prescription is significant and warrants careful attention at point of care. We hypothesize that internalized societal biases and stereotypes affect benzodiazepine prescribing behaviour.

Context: The effect of antidepressant (ATD) use on mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) has not yet been sufficiently studied, although comorbid depression is common in this population., Objective: To explore the impact of ATDs on mortality among DM patients., Design: A retrospective cohort study in a national database., Setting: This population-based study used the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Since 2000, we identified 53,412 cases of newly diagnosed patients with DM and depression. Patient cases were followed for assessing mortality until 2013., Main Outcome Measure: The association between mortality and ATD use was explored adjusting for cumulative dosing., Results: Using the time-dependent Cox regression model, ATD use was associated with significantly reduced mortality among patients with DM [in the highest dose group: hazard ratio (HR), 0.65; 95% CI, 0.59 to 0.71]. Further analysis showed that differences in mortality existed across ATD categories: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (HR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.56 to 0.71), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (HR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.78), norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors (HR, 0.20; 95% CI, 0.07 to 0.63), mirtazapine (HR, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.45 to 0.82), tricyclic/tetracyclic antidepressants (HR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.54 to 0.97), and trazodone (HR, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.29 to 0.91). However, reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A (RIMA) was found to be associated with an increase, rather than a decrease, in total mortality (HR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.09 to 1.99)., Conclusion: Most ATDs, but not RIMA, were associated with significantly reduced mortality among a population with comorbid DM and depression., (Copyright © 2019 Endocrine Society.)

It has been encouraged to use large existing data like insurance claims data to investigate the new indications of old drugs. New strategies of research are warranted to identify feasible drugs. We conducted a dual research model with a population-based case-control study using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database and an in vitro study to investigate the association between atypical antipsychotic and Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk. The study herein consists of two components. The first is a population-based case-control study using existing data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. The second component was an in vitro study in which HCC cell lines (Huh7 and Hep G2) were treated with risperidone, quetiapine and clozapine. after treatment of the foregoing antipsychotics, the HCC cell lines were assessed for cell proliferation, invasion and apoptosis. Multivariate conditional logistic regression analysis revealed that antipsychotic use was independently and inversely associated with HCC risk (adjusted odds-ratio [aOR]:0.85, 95% CI: 0.81-0.89). The protective effect was dose-dependent: compared to the low cumulative defined daily dose (cDDD) group (0-29 cDDD), the 30-89 cDDD and ≥90 cDDD groups were associated with significantly reduced risk for HCC (aOR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.41-0.76; aOR: 0.37, 95% CI: 0.27-0.50, respectively). In vitro study results indicated that risperidone, quetiapine and clozapine significantly inhibited cell proliferation, invasion and induced apoptosis in human HCC cell lines. Objective: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease putatively associated with dementia. However, the epidemiologic evidence of the relationship between psoriasis and dementia has been limited. We used a large national sample to investigate this relationship as well as the association between systemic therapy for psoriasis and incident dementia., Methods: The cases were identified as a first recorded diagnosis of psoriasis (ICD-9-CM codes: 696.0, 696.1, or 696.8) between 1996 and 2013 from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). Each selected case of psoriasis was compared with 4 sex-, age-, and urbanization-matched comparison subjects. The first diagnosis of dementia (ICD-9-CM codes: 290.0-290.4, 294.1-294.2, 331.0-331.2, or 331.82) that covered vascular and nonvascular subtypes until the end of 2013 was tracked in both groups. Cox regression analyses and a competing risk model were applied to evaluate the risk, adjusting for sex, urbanization, age, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, hyperlipidemia, stroke, and depression. The association between systemic therapy and incidence of dementia in the psoriasis group was examined in further stratified analyses., Results: Overall, 3,820 patients with psoriasis and 15,280 comparisons were identified. After adjustment, a significantly higher risk of dementia was identified in the psoriasis group than in the comparison group (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 1.23; 95% CI, 1.06-1.42). A significant association between psoriasis and dementia was identified for nonvascular dementia (aHR = 1.25, 95% CI, 1.07-1.45) but not for vascular dementia (aHR = 1.27, 95% CI, 0.83-1.93). Receiving systemic therapy for psoriasis for more than 90 days significantly reduced the risk of developing dementia compared with no systemic therapy (aHR = 0.66; 95% CI, 0.45-0.97). Compared with those who received no systemic therapy, the patients who received disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs and/or biologics had a significantly lower risk of dementia incidence (aHR = 0.69; 95% CI, 0.50-0.97), which was not the case in patients who received only phototherapy., Conclusions: Individuals with psoriasis have a significantly higher incidence of dementia, particularly the nonvascular type. Background: We report the first nationwide population-based cohort study using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database on the association between enterovirus (EV) infection and the incidence of sleep disorders in a pediatric population., Methods: Two matched groups of children under 18 years of age were included in the analyses for nonapneic sleep disorder and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Among them, 316 subjects were diagnosed with OSA during the surveillance period, including 182 in the EV infection group and 134 in the non-EV infection group., Results: Hospitalization because of EV infection was associated with OSA after adjusting for age, sex, urbanization atopic disease and perinatal complications (adjusted hazard ratio: 1.62, 95% confidence interval: 1.18-2.21; P = 0.003). An additional factor significantly associated with sleep apnea was allergic rhinitis (hazard ratio: 4.82, 95% confidence interval: 3.45-6.72)., Conclusions: Children with severe EV infection (ie, requiring hospitalization) carry a significantly higher risk of developing OSA, particularly in those with allergic rhinitis. As pediatric obstructive sleep apnea is a treatable sleep disorder, we emphasize regular follow-up and early detection in children with EV infection.

Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) youths have increased suicide risk. Nevertheless, the beneficial effects of methylphenidate (MPH) on suicide attempt have received relatively little attention., Aims: To investigate the MPH usage and the risk of suicide attempt among ADHD youths., Methods: We identified 84,898 youths less than 18 years old with ADHD diagnosis between 1997 and 2013 from National Health Insurance, and examined whether MPH use affected suicide attempt risk using Cox proportional-hazards models., Outcome and Results: Among ADHD youths, reduction of suicide risk was found in patients prescribed 90-180days of MPH after adjusting for confounding factors (hazard ratio (HR): 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.19-0.90) and a greater reduction in those prescribed more than 180days of MPH (HR: 0.28, 95% CI: 0.17-0.48)., Conclusions and Implications: We observed a 59% suicide attempt risk reduction among ADHD youths prescribed between 90 and 180days and a 72% risk reduction in those prescribed more than 180days of MPH. The protective benefit observed by the group prescribed MPH for longer duration underscores the importance of psychoeducation and compliance enhancement as part of ADHD management. To our knowledge, the association between antidepressant exposure and endometrial cancer has not been previously explored. Herein, we aim to investigate the association between antidepressant prescription, including novel antidepressants, and the risk for endometrial cancer in a population-based study.Data for the analysis were derived from National Health Insurance Research Database. We identified 8392 cases with a diagnosis of endometrial cancer and 82,432 matched controls. A conditional logistic regression model was used, with adjusting for potentially confounding variables (e.g., comorbid psychiatric diseases, comorbid physical diseases, and other medications). Risk for endometrial cancer in the population-based study sample was categorized by, and assessed as a function of, antidepressant prescription and cumulative dosage.We report no association between endometrial cancer incidence and antidepressant prescription, including those prescribed either selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.98; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.84-1.15) or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (adjusted OR = 1.14; 95% CI, 0.76-1.71). There has been growing interest in the association between infectious disease and mental disorders, but an association between enterovirus (EV) infection and tic disorders has not been sufficiently explored. Herein, we aim to investigate the association between EV infection and incidence of tic disorders in a nationwide population-based sample using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. We identified individuals aged ≤18 years prior to 2005 with an inpatient diagnosis of EV infection and/or history of EV infection. Tic disorder was operationalized using International Classification of Disease, Revision 9, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes 307.20-307.23. A total of 47,998 individuals with history of EV infection were compared to 47,998 sex-, age-, and urbanization-matched controls on incidence of tic disorders. The mean ± standard deviation follow-up period for all subjects was 9.7 ± 3.6 years; the mean latency period between initial EV infection and incident diagnosis of tic disorder diagnosis was 5.4 ± 2.8 years. EV infection was significantly associated with greater incidence of tic disorders (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.07-1.45). When subgrouped on the basis of central nervous system (CNS) involvement, EV infection with CNS involvement was not significantly associated with greater incidence of tic disorders when compared to controls (HR = 1.25, 95% CI: 0.64-2.43); EV infection without CNS involvement was significantly associated greater incidence of tic disorders when compared to controls (HR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.07-1.45). In addition, hospitalization for an EV infection did not increase the hazard for greater incidence of tic disorders (HR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.04-1.67 with hospitalization and 1.22, 95% CI: 1.04-1.44 without hospitalization). EV infection is temporally associated with incidence of tic disorders. Our observations add to the growing body of literature implicating immune-inflammatory system in the pathoetiology of brain disorders in a subpopulation of individuals and serve as a clarion call for surveillance of symptoms suggestive of tic disorders in individuals with history of EV infection.

Background: To our knowledge, no epidemiological study has reported on whether an association between antidepressant exposure and gastric cancer exists. Herein, we aim to investigate the possible association between antidepressant exposure and gastric cancer incidence., Methods: Using a nested case-control design, we identified 26289 cases with gastric cancer and 127984 controls from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). The data were analyzed using a conditional logistic regression model adjusting for possible confounding variables., Results: We found antidepressant use did not increase the risk of gastric cancer. The lack of an association between antidepressant prescription and elevated gastric cancer incidence was apparent for across selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclic agents (TCAs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), reversible inhibitors of monoamine oxidase A (RIMA), trazodone, mirtazapine and bupropion. There were slightly decreased gastric cancer risks of SSRIs use (≧28 DDD group, adjusted OR = 0.87; 95% CI = 0.78-0.96). Sensitive analysis showed SSRIs, TCAs, and SNRIs did not increase gastric cancer risks significantly even in the group with peptic ulcer history., Conclusions: An association between antidepressant exposure and gastric cancer was not apparent in this analysis.

To our knowledge, no prior population-based study has been published wherein the primary aim was to evaluate whether an association between psychotropic drug prescription and cervical cancer exists. Herein we have conducted the first study that primarily aimed to determine the association between antidepressants use and risk of invasive cervical cancer in the general population.This is a population-based study utilizing Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. We identified 26,262 cases with invasive cervical cancer and 129,490 controls. We adopted the conditional logistic regression model as the statistical method and adjusted for potential confounding factors.The prescription of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (adjusted OR = 0.93, 95% CI = 0.84-1.04), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), mirtazapine and bupropion, adjusting for cumulative dose, was not associated with an increased, or decreased, risk for invasive cervical cancer. An association between trazodone prescription and invasive cervical cancer was observed (adjusted OR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.03-1.43).An association between the major classes of antidepressants and invasive cervical cancer was not observed herein. Our preliminary finding regarding a possible association between trazodone and cervical cancer requires replication.
