Potential high-risk freshmen for three core courses (BasicMath, Calculus, and Computing) in the university were identified based on the "College Students' Adjustment Check List (CSACL)" data available with the Student Development Centre in the Office of Students' Affairs of the university. The study demonstrates that to ameliorate the problem of unpreparedness of freshmen, to check failure rates, and efficient use of limited resources, an effective remedial system could be developed by the combined inputs from the Office of Students' Affairs, Computer Centre, Academic Affairs, and the Institutional Research. Our study corroborates the findings of other researchers that gender, teacher, department, high school performance, enrolment channel, and loads during remedial course influence the learning outcome. Also, it was found that the use of multi-evaluation approaches in different enrolment channels can attain higher retention rates.

This article develops a framework to understand the legal profession's participation in providing services to indigent clients. Our theory is based on two factors: whether lawyers have successful practices, and whether the legal aid delivered to indigent clients is free or below market price. Pro bono signals moral high ground in the profession. Conversely, a regime in which legal assistance is provided at a discounted market price ("low bono"), an under‐explored area in the literature, attracts less competitive attorneys, and doing legal aid cases is perceived as signifying incompetence in one's professional capacity. Using a unique, comprehensive data set on all legal aid lawyers in Taiwan (nearly 4000), two nationwide attorney surveys, and 143 in‐depth interviews with practicing lawyers across the country, we offer the first comprehensive empirical analysis of legal aid lawyers and explain that the design of a legal aid regime attracts lawyers of different hemispheres into the endeavor. Background: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are distressing for patients with dementia, often accelerating functional decline and nursing home placement. Medications such as quetiapine are used to alleviate NPS, but their side effects require cautious use. Liquid formulations such as quetiapine oral suspension suit specific populations; however, real-world data on their use in patients with dementia are limited. Objective: The purpose of this retrospective, naturalistic study was to provide preliminary data on the effects of treatment with quetiapine oral suspension on behavioral and psychiatric disturbances in Alzheimer's disease (AD) outpatients in Taiwan. Methods: Between January 2022 and June 2023, data were collected from outpatients with a diagnosis of probable AD who received treatment with Qting® (quetiapine oral solution 25 mg/ml). Primary outcome measures were changes in Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) total score and its sub-items from baseline to the endpoint. Results: We recruited 66 AD patients with a mean age of 72.1±7.6 years, most of whom were female (69.7%). Twenty-three patients had data on neuropsychological test and NPI scores before and after quetiapine treatment. There was no significant change in global cognitive function from baseline to the endpoint. A significant reduction in NPI total score after quetiapine treatment was noted, while the effect on NPI sub-items was limited. The average maintenance dose was 1.5±0.6 ml. Conclusions: We demonstrated our clinical experience of the use of quetiapine oral solution in AD patients with NPS. Background The relationship between maternal chronic diseases and congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract (CAKUT) in offspring still needs elucidation. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the associations between maternal chronic disease and CAKUT in their offspring. Methods Data of mothers and children were extracted from the Taiwan Maternal and Child Health Database and National Health Insurance Research Database. The concept of developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) was used to select maternal chronic diseases. Results The study cohort included 1 196 175 mothers and 1 628 706 offspring. Analysis showed that maternal chronic diseases, especially type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, connective tissue disorders and CAKUT were highly associated with CAKUT in the offspring. Higher maternal age, abnormal birthweight (>3500 g or <2500 g), gestational age <36 weeks and birth order <2 were all associated with a higher risk of CAKUT. Maternal chronic hypertension and taking angiotensin-related drugs increased the odds ratios of obstructive kidney disease in the offspring. Offspring tended to have the same type of CAKUT as their mothers. Conclusion Maternal chronic diseases, older maternal age and abnormal birthweight are risk factors for CAKUT. Also, a percentage of patients with CAKUT were not full-term newborns. Results support prenatal counselling and health management of pregnant women with chronic diseases and extra care for infants with a high risk of anomalies. Objectives: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are highly prevalent in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), causing burdens on caregivers. Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia and subclinical epileptiform discharge (SED) increased with the disease course of AD. However, the interaction between them was still unknown. The present study aimed to evaluate the associations between SED and BPSD. Methods/Design: Patients with AD from Kaohsiung Municipal Ta‐tung Hospital were included in this study. International 10–20 system scalp electroencephalography (EEG) for 13 min was performed to detect SED. Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia was assessed by neuropsychiatric inventory (NPI) questionnaires. The occurrence of BPSD subsyndromes was compared between patients with and without SED. Results: Two hundred sixty‐three adult patients qualified for the inclusion criteria and were enrolled in this study. The mean age of patients was 80.2 years, and approximately 62% were women. 17.1% of patients showed SED on EEG. Apathy was the most commonly reported BPSD subsyndrome in this cohort. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of BPSD between patients with and without SED. (75.6% vs. 67.4%, p = 0.2806). However, the NPI score of irritability subsyndrome was significantly higher in the SED (+) group (2.6 ± 3.7 vs. 1.2 ± 2.7, p = 0.0028). In addition, subclinical epileptiform discharge in the frontal lobe was associated with a considerably higher occurrence of hyperactivity subsyndrome, including irritability. Conclusions: SED may not be a direct cause of BPSD, but the presence of SED may affect the manifestation of BPSD. Introduction: The Apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon (+) 4 allele is a well-established risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Reports on white ancestry populations have showed that age, sex, and ethnicity have different effects on the association between APOE genotype and AD. However, studies on Asian populations such as Taiwan Chinese populations are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the association between APOE genotype and AD in a Taiwan Chinese population, and to explore if the association varies by age and sex. Methods: We conducted a case-control study in 725 patients with AD and 1,067 age- and sex- matched controls without dementia from a Taiwan Chinese population. Logistic regression models were used to test the association between AD and APOE genotypes. Secondary analyses considered age (<75 or ≥75 years old), and sex stratified models. Results: The risk of AD was significantly increased for people with at least one copy of APOE ε4 (OR = 2.52, 95% CI = 2.01--3.17, p < 0.001) and in a dose-dependent manner. Our results did not show an statistically significance different in AD risk when women and men carrying APOEε4 were compared. Despite not reaching statistical significance, the risk of APOE ε4 for AD was higher among younger participants (OR = 3.21, 95% CI = 2.26-4.56, p < 0.001) compared to older ones (OR = 2.13, 95% CI = 1.53-2.97, p < 0.001). When considering both sex and age, the risk of AD was higher among older men carrying APOE ε4 (OR = 2.64, 95% CI = 1.51-4.60 in men; OR = 1.90, 95% CI = 1.26-2.86 in women), while women carrying APOE ε4 appeared to have an increased risk at a younger age (OR = 3.29, 95% CI = 2.20-4.93 in women; OR = 2.91, 95% CI = 1.40-6.05 in men). Discussion: The APOE ε4 allele represents a major risk factor for AD in the Taiwanese population. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of textile sludge as a raw material for sintering lightweight aggregates (LWAs) and its application in concrete. Three samples of different components were taken from the textile sludge, which came from different textile factories in Taiwan. The analysis of the chemical composition of the sludge shows that the total content of SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3 in the textile sludge was far lower than the recommended value in the literature, and that glassy melt could not be produced and sintered into LWAs alone. Therefore, the water purification sludge obtained from a water purification plant owned by the Taiwan Water Supply Company was used as the main raw material, and the textile sludge was used as the auxiliary raw material in addition amounts of 7.5%, 15.0%, and 22.5%. The test results showed that the LWAs sintered by adding textile sludge to water purification sludge could reach the particle density that is generally required for LWAs (between 0.2 and 1.8 g/cm3). The 14-day compressive strength of the lightweight aggregate concrete made from textile-sludge-based LWAs was between 20 and 25 MPa. How do Taiwanese judges acquire autonomy in decision-making, free from intervention from the judicial administration? Using diverse archival data and in-depth interviews with 31 incumbent judges, this article makes three statements. First, the judiciary has multiple and inter-connected mechanisms to secure autonomy in decision making. The establishment of judicial independence is a dynamic and interactive process. Second, a distinctive "sandwich mobilization model" can be observed in the emergence and sustaining of internal mechanisms. Both the bottom-up mobilization by ordinary judges and the top-down policy reform by the judicial administration are critical driving forces for the establishment of judicial autonomy. Third, as Taiwan's judiciary normalized, the institutional tension inherent in the continental judicial system emerged. That is, the individual space for judicial decision-making stands in contrast to the bureaucratic monitoring of individual judges' performance. Aim: Alzheimer's dementia (AD) is a slowly progressing neurodegenerative disease, characterized by beta‐amyloid deposition and neurofibrillary tangles. Peripheral atherosclerosis may deteriorate these processes via endothelial cell dysfunction and microvascular impairment. Cilostazol – a phosphodiesterase 3 inhibitor – is a standard treatment for peripheral arterial occlusive disease and a potential treatment for preserving cognitive function in AD patients. We aimed to determine whether cilostazol is beneficial in AD patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease by evaluating Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument (CASI) domains. Methods: We conducted a retrospective case–control study of 62 AD patients in Taiwan. Thirty‐one patients had peripheral arterial occlusive disease and were receiving cilostazol plus acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AchEIs) or N‐methyl d‐aspartate antagonists, whereas 31 others were receiving AchEIs. Therapeutic responses were measured using neuropsychological assessments. The CASI was administered at baseline and 12 months later; different domains were analyzed between the groups using univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: Age, sex, education duration, ApoE ε4 gene status, and initial Mini‐Mental State Examination scores were not different between the two groups. Except for fluency, no CASI domains showed a statistical difference between the groups. A significant difference was observed in category fluency (P = 0.010). In the logistic regression analysis, after adjusting for covariate effects, category fluency still showed a significant difference between the groups (P = 0.013). Conclusions: In AD patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease who have received Food and Drug Administration‐approved pharmacotherapy, cilostazol, as an antiplatelet, may help to preserve general cognitive function, with significant preservation in category fluency. The Minbaklu Bridge, an essential segment of the southern cross-island expressway in Taiwan, was destroyed owing to debris flow in the Yusui Stream. To elucidate the development of debris flow in the Yusui Stream and the bridge collapse event, this study proposed a hybrid model of the discrete element method and depth-averaged model to simulate the event through three stages: formation of the natural dam, debris flow triggered by dam braking, and bridge collapse owing to the debris flow. The simulation results obtained indicate that the proposed model can provide reasonable simulations of the formation of natural dam in both time line and spatial distribution. Further, it indicated that the erosion developed at the river bed of the flow region, and illustrated the failure process of the Minbaklu Bridge, which revealed that it was uplifted before being pushed away. Furthermore, the final deposition of the alluvial fan deposition was demonstrated as well. Objective: To explore the effectiveness of a nurse‐led mobile health (mHealth) intervention to prevent excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) in overweight and obese women. Methods: A randomized controlled trial with an experimental study design. Ninety‐two pregnant women with body mass index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m2 at less than 17 weeks gestation were recruited from two prenatal clinics in northern Taiwan from January to June 2020. The experimental group used the MyHealthyWeight (MHW) app and a wearable activity tracker (WAT), and the controls received standard antenatal treatments with no mHealth‐based elements. Two hospital follow‐up visits were scheduled at 24–26 weeks in the second trimester and 34–36 weeks in the third trimester. A generalized estimating equation (GEE) was used to examine the trajectories and the effectiveness of mHealth on GWG. Results: No difference in GWG was found between the intervention and control groups at baseline (p > 0.05). The GWG trajectory in the entire cohort of women with obesity exhibited a quadratic pattern (ß = 1.8, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.27–2.32), and intervention participants' weekly GWG was gained significantly lower than their controls in the second trimester (p < 0.05). Throughout the pregnancy, the mHealth intervention group had a significantly lower proportion of individuals who exceeded their GWG in both total (21.6% vs. 32.6%) and weekly weight gain (first trimester = 58.7% vs. 65.2%; second trimester = 45% vs. 67.4%; third trimester = 48.6% vs. 55.1%). In particular, among obese women in the third trimester, those in the intervention group gained less gestational weight than their controls. The adjusted body weight difference was 5.44 kg (p = 0.023), signifying the total GWG difference (3.30 vs. 8.74 kg) between the means of the two groups. The GEE model indicated that obese women who were aged 35 years, had prepregnancy exercise habits, perceived self‐efficacy of diet, and more physical activity tended to have low GWG (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The nurse‐led mHealth‐based intervention shows promising results in significantly preventing excessive GWG among high‐BMI women. More effectiveness was found among the obese subgroup. Clinical relevance: The mHealth‐based intervention would be successfully implemented by nurses to help high‐BMI women maintain their optimal body weight and promote healthy behavioral changes, particularly in diet and physical activity during pregnancy. Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPSs) are known to be frequent in Parkinson's disease (PD) with great impacts on the quality of life, but reports about the prevalence in institutions are few. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of and risk factors for NPSs in institutionalized patients with PD in Taiwan. The National Health Research Institute executed a cross-sectional, community-based, observational study on residential long-term care service institutions. The diagnosis of PD was determined by physicians with the estimated Hoehn and Yahr stage of PD according to the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire. A total of 370 patients with PD (80.1 ± 9.94 years old, 55.1% females) were included, and 139 (37.6%) had more than one NPS in the prior 3 months. The top three NPSs were nighttime behavior (65 (17.6%)), depression (53 (14.3%)), and fear/anxiety (49 (13.2%)). There were no differences between those with NPS and those without NPS in terms of age, gender, education, Mini-Mental State Examination, or Hoehn and Yahr stage. However, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that genitourinary disease (odds ratio (OR) = 3.13; 95% confidence interval (95%CI) = 1.77–5.51) and psychiatric disorders (OR = 5.18; 95%CI = 3.09–8.69) may be associated with increased risk of NPSs. Increased physical restraint was observed in residents with advanced PD. Genitourinary disease and psychiatric disorders appear to increase the risk of NPSs in institutionalized residents with PD. Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients who are unable to return to work after completing treatment might face financial loss and reduced self-esteem. The aim of this study was to identify factors influencing a return to work in HNC cancer patients in the first 6 months after treatment. This cross-sectional study examined HNC patients who completed treatment from the outpatient radiation department of a single cancer center in northern Taiwan. Patients were assessed according to psychological distress, patient-perceived health status, barriers to returning to work, and facilitators of returning to work. Of the 106 HNC patients surveyed, 54.7% successfully returned to work. Barriers to returning to work included poor self-perception of health, greater psychological distress, and age ≥50 years. Patients who had higher psychological distress, returned to work after start of the pandemic, or received reconstruction surgery were less likely to experience a positive environment facilitating a return to work. Background: In Taiwan, physical restraint is commonly used in institutions to protect residents from falling or injury. However, physical restraint should be used cautiously to avoid side effects, such as worse cognition, mobility, depression, and even death. Objectives: To identify the rate of physical restraint and the associated risk factors in institutionalized residents in Taiwan. Methods: A community-based epidemiological survey was conducted from July 2019 to February 2020 across 266 residential institutions. Among the estimated 6,549 residents being surveyed, a total of 5,752 finished the study. The questionnaires were completed by residents, his/her family or social workers. The cognition tests were conducted by specialists and a multilevel analysis approach was used to identify cognition/disability/medical history/special nursing care/BPSD risk factors for physical restraints. Results: Of the 5,752 included institutionalized residents, 30.2% (1,737) had been previously restrained. Older age, lower education level, lower cognitive function, higher dependence, residents with cerebrovascular disease, pulmonary disease, dementia, and intractable epilepsy, all contributed to a higher physical restraint rate, while orthopedic disease and spinal cord injury were associated with a lower physical restraint rate. Furthermore, residents with special nursing care had a higher restraint rate. Residents with most of the behavior and psychological symptoms were also associated with an increased restraint rate. Conclusions: We studied the rate of physical restraint and associated risk factors in institutionalized residents in Taiwan. • In this study, hysterectomy was associated with an increased risk of thyroid cancer. • The oophorectomy status may affect the risk of thyroid cancer after hysterectomy. • Hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was not associated with thyroid cancer. Hysterectomy is commonly performed for benign uterine pathologies but there is some controversy over whether it is associated with an increased risk of thyroid cancer. This study examines the associations of hysterectomy with ovarian conservation or with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and thyroid cancer incidence in Taiwan. We analyzed data from a nationwide health insurance claims database and identified 29,577 women aged ≥30 years who underwent hysterectomy with ovarian conservation or hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy between 2000 and 2016. Propensity score-matching analyses were performed at ratios of 1:1 for the hysterectomy and no-hysterectomy groups, to reduce selection bias. We monitored thyroid cancer occurrence in both groups until 2017. Cox regression was used to calculate hazard ratios with 95 % confidence intervals and determine thyroid cancer risk in women who underwent hysterectomy. The study comprised 29,577 patients who underwent any hysterectomy and 29,577 participants who did not. The mean follow-up period was 10.03 ± 4.92 years. Patients who underwent hysterectomy had higher thyroid cancer incidence (4.72 per 10,000 person-years) than those who did not (3.06 per 10,000 person-years) and a greater risk of any thyroid cancer (adjusted hazard ratio = 1.40; 95 % confidence interval = 1.08–1.82). However, there was no association between hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and thyroid cancer incidence (p > 0.05). Industrial sludge continues to increase in quantity with the development of industry. Therefore, how to effectively treat industrial sludge continues to be an environmental focus around the world. Due to the high calorie content of industrial sludge in Taiwan, most of the sludge is incinerated for simplicity and convenience. However, this incineration causes environmental pollution and cannot effectively reuse the industrial sludge. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of lightweight aggregates produced from water treatment sludge (WTS) mixed with industrial sludge. The industrial sludge was obtained from three industrial zones in Taiwan. The lightweight aggregate materials were prepared by mixing WTS with 7.5%, 15.0%, or 22.5% of industrial sludge as a secondary ingredient. The chemical composition analyses revealed that the ternary phase diagrams of the chemical components were within the range recommended by C.M. Moreover, Riley indicated that the ingredients could expand. The sintering experiments were conducted in two stages. Stage I served to determine the optimal sintering temperature, while Stage II produced lightweight aggregates at the optimal sintering temperatures after 5, 10, or 15 min of preheating. The results indicated that an increase in preheating time increased the particle density of the lightweight aggregates but decreased the water absorption ratio, because increasing preheating time causes more gases to escape, resulting in aggregates that could not produce sufficient gas to support expansion during the sintering stage. The sintering results of the lightweight aggregates showed that their particle density was between 0.5 and 1.4 g/cm3, which met the requirements of the specification. Their water absorption rate was below 21%, which was roughly in line with the recommendations of the specification. When the amount of industrial sludge added was less than 22.5%, the lightweight aggregate was sintered successfully, which is suitable for engineering applications. The industrial sludge experienced a loss of between 50% and 70% on ignition, resulting in pores and cracks that were observed on the surfaces of the lightweight aggregate. Based on the energy required to sinter lightweight aggregates, a greater loss on ignition indicates the conversion of more materials into heat energy. Therefore, the use of industrial sludge in lightweight aggregates not only provides ways to reuse industrial sewage waste but also reduces the consumption requirements for sintering lightweight aggregates, thereby achieving energy-saving and carbon-reduction goals. Mega-earthquakes and extreme climate events accompanied by intrinsic fragile geology lead to numerous landslides along mountain highways in Taiwan, causing enormous life and economic losses. In this study, a system for rapid slope disaster information integration and assessment is proposed with the aim of providing information on landslide occurrence, failure mechanisms, and subsequent landslide-affected areas to the highway authority rapidly. The functionality of the proposed system is deployed into three units: (1) geohazard rapid report (GeoPORT I), (2) multidisciplinary geological survey report (GeoPORT II), and (3) site-specific landslide simulation report (GeoPORT III). After landslide occurrence, the seismology-based monitoring network rapidly provides the initial slope disaster information, including preliminary location, event magnitude, earthquake activity, and source dynamics, within an hour. Within 3 days of the landslide, a multidisciplinary geological survey is conducted to collect high-precision topographical, geological, and remote-sensing data to determine the possible failure mechanism. After integrating the aforementioned information, a full-scale three-dimensional landslide simulation based on the discrete element method is performed within 10 days to reveal the failure process and to identify the areas potentially affected by subsequent disasters through scenario modeling. Overall, the proposed system can promptly provide comprehensive and objective information to relevant authorities after the event occurrence for hazard assessment. Purpose: Primary caregivers (PC) of patients with advanced head and neck cancer (HNC) report stress during caregiving time post‐treatment. We sought to identify the trajectories of resilience from initial completion of treatment to 1‐year post‐treatment in PC of patients with advanced HNC and to determine the factors associated with trajectories of resilience. Design: In this prospective cohort study with convenience sampling, patient–PC dyads were recruited from a medical center in northern Taiwan between August 2015 and July 2020. Methods: We recruited 120 patient–PC dyads and followed up at treatment completion and 1, 6, and 12 months post‐treatment. Generalized estimating equation analysis was performed to identified factors related to resilience. Findings: PCs' overall resilience increased from initial completion of treatment to peak at 1‐year post‐treatment. Patient factors associated with greater overall resilience included older age, higher performance status, and shorter time since cancer diagnosis; PC factors included reporting more social support, better physical health, and better mental health. Conclusions: PC mental health was the most important factor in the resilience trajectory of patients with advanced HNC cancer. Clinical relevance: Quantifying the relevant factors of trajectories of resilience will help to identify vulnerable PCs and guide survivorship care in the early stages of the post‐treatment period. Purpose: After suddenly stopping smoking after an initial oral cancer (OC) diagnosis, patients may restart smoking and nicotine dependence. This study sought to identify factors associated with high nicotine dependence in OC patients who restarted smoking post‐treatment. Design: A cross‐sectional study. Methods: A group of 220 OC patients who restarted smoking post‐treatment were recruited from the outpatient radiation department of a single cancer center in northern Taiwan. Demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded, and patients were assessed for nicotine and smoking dependence, physical activity and function, socio‐emotional function, social support, and depression. Results: Among patients who restarted smoking after treatment for OC, 75.9% reported low‐to‐moderate dependence on smoking, while 24.1% reported high nicotine dependence. Factors associated with high nicotine dependence included higher incidence of smoking per day, greater dependence on smoking, less physical activity per week, and poorer social–emotional function. Those highly dependent on nicotine were younger, unmarried, had less education, and had begun smoking earlier than those with low‐to‐moderate nicotine dependence. Conclusions: The amount of smoking per day, greater smoking behavioral dependence, less physical activity per week, and worse social–emotional function affected high nicotine dependence. This study investigates the impact of immigrant context on continuity and success in Chinese family business. We conceptualize the immigrant context as exposure to country differences in family logic, arguing that the immigrant context influences transgenerational intent by affecting family practices and relations. Based on a multiple-case study of Taiwanese business families in Brisbane, Australia, we show that variations in three family practices – parental control, children's filial piety, and parental role in children's career development – play an important role in this matter. Purpose: Oral dysfunction is a common adverse event of treatment and may affect oral health–related quality of life (OHRQoL). This study aimed to identify factors associated with OHRQoL in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) within the first three months posttreatment. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined OSCC patients who received treatment from the outpatient radiation department of a single cancer center in northern Taiwan. Demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded, and patients were assessed using the Self-Care Behaviors Scale (SCB), Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP), and Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) questionnaires. Results: Among 148 OSCC patients, 11.5% reported being underweight and 70.3% reported normal weight. The most common self-care factors associated with adverse effects were decreased appetite and fatigue. Psychological disability, functional limitation, and physical pain were the most negative OHRQoL factors. Poor OHRQoL was associated with more severe adverse effects after self-care behaviors, using feeding tubes during treatment, and having BMI less than 25, which together explained 33.5% of the variance in OHRQoL. Conclusions: The severity of adverse effects after self-care behaviors and using feeding tubes during treatment strongly influenced overall OHRQoL and seven specific dimensions of OHRQoL. Directional or vector time-dependent observations, such as the flow at a river branch, streamflow, lake flow, ocean currents, or wind data, are commonly observed in the environment. Traditionally, a rose diagram can be used to summarize the possible main orientation using all the data in the time domain. However, it cannot indicate the significant variation in the specific frequency bands that may show dominant periodic fluctuations. Assessment of directional time series often requires the identification of significant components in the specific frequency bands for not only the magnitude but also the orientation. The rotary pattern, main orientation, and magnitude of directional time series in the frequency domain for five sets of seasonal wind velocity observed at the northern, southern, eastern, and western coast of the subtropical island Taiwan and Taiwan Strait have been demonstrated. It shows that the representative pattern is clockwise, counterclockwise, or near rectilinear, and semidiurnal and diurnal components are significant in the frequency domain for most stations. The most important research innovation suggests that the use of rotary spectral analysis in the frequency domain to effectively assess the orientation and magnitude of directional time series, such as hydrological, coastal, or environmental observations, has become feasible. Objectives: This study investigates the relationship between multidisciplinary team care (MDTC) and patient completion of their treatment regimen for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in patients diagnosed with OSCC in Taiwan from 1 January 2016 to 30 June 2018 using a linked cancer registry database. Results: Of the 969 OSCC MDTC patients in the study cohort, 6.3% reported incomplete treatment, with 1.3% interrupting ongoing treatment and 5.0% terminating definitive treatment. Patients who had advanced‐stage disease, experienced primary cancer recurrence or a secondary cancer, or were treated with surgery combined with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy were more likely to terminate treatment before completion. The major reasons for interruption of ongoing treatment included 'patient or their family considered the patient to be in poor physical condition' and 'difficulty enduring physical discomfort caused by treatment'. The major reason for termination of definitive treatment was 'patient or their families or friends experienced negative treatment effects and worried about the side‐effects of treatment'. Conclusion: Advanced‐stage cancer, recurrence or secondary cancer, and surgery combined with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy negatively affected treatment completion. Background: In real-world practice settings, there is insufficient evidence on the efficacy of antiplatelet drugs, including clopidogrel, aspirin, and ticlopidine, in stroke prevention. Purpose: To compare the efficacies between aspirin and clopidogrel and aspirin and ticlopidine in stroke prevention. Methods: This population-based case-cohort study utilized the data obtained from a randomized sample of one million subjects in the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients who were hospitalized owing to the primary diagnosis of ischemic stroke from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2010 and treated with aspirin, ticlopidine, or clopidogrel were included in the study. Propensity score matching with a 1:4 ratio was performed to compare aspirin with ticlopidine and clopidogrel. The criteria for inclusion were the use of one of the three antiplatelet drugs for more than 14 days within the first month after the stroke and then continued use of the antiplatelet drugs until the study endpoint of recurrent stroke. Results: During the 3-year follow-up period, the recurrent stroke rates were 1.62% (42/2585), 1.48% (3/203), and 2.55% (8/314) in the aspirin, ticlopidine, and clopidogrel groups, respectively. Compared with the patients treated with aspirin, those treated with clopidogrel and ticlopidine showed competing risk-adjusted hazard ratios of recurrent stroke of 2.27 (1.02–5.07) and 0.62 (0.08–4.86), respectively. Conclusion: Compared with the patients treated with aspirin, those treated with clopidogrel were at a higher risk of recurrent stroke. Purpose: To identify factors associated with resilience in primary caregivers of patients with advanced oral cavity cancer within the first 6 months post‐treatment. Design: A cross‐sectional study. Methods: We recruited patient–primary caregiver dyads from the outpatient radiation department of a medical center in Northern Taiwan. Patients were assessed using a set of structured questionnaires to measure performance status and demographic and clinical characteristics. Primary caregivers were measured in their social support, resilience, and care characteristics. Results: Of the 148 dyads surveyed, 33.8% of primary caregivers reported moderately low to moderate resilience, and 61.5% reported low resilience. Greater resilience of primary caregivers was associated with the primary caregiver factors of younger age, lower educational level, and more affectionate social support; and greater resilience was associated with the patient factors of better performance status and older age. These factors explained 40.4% of the variance in resilience. Conclusions: Patients' performance status and primary caregivers' affectionate social support strongly influence overall resilience and each domain of resilience. Clinical Relevance: Providing primary caregivers with sufficient social resources and a support group can help them cope with the demands of caregiving for loved ones with oral cavity cancer. Aim: The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of individualized exercise counselling in changing exercise behaviour and relieving pregnancy‐related distress symptoms in pregnant women. Methods: A quasi‐experimental design and convenience sampling technique were used. Participants were recruited from the prenatal outpatient departments of medical centre hospitals in Taipei, Taiwan. The experimental group (n = 52) received face‐to‐face exercise counselling followed by 8 weeks of exercise sessions in their homes. The control group (n = 49) received no exercise counselling. Pregnancy‐related distress symptoms were assessed before and after 8 weeks in both groups. Results: The after‐counselling scores of total (t = 2.46, P < 0.05) and physical (t = 3.18, P < 0.01) distress symptoms were significantly lower than the before‐counselling scores in the experimental group. The total, physical and psychological distress scores significantly differed between groups and before and after counselling. The adjusted R2 values for total, physical and psychological distress symptoms ranged from 0.59 to 0.70. Participants' exercise habits increased from prepregnancy (19.2%) to after counselling (71.2%). Conclusion: Exercise counselling may effectively increase exercise habits and reduce pregnancy‐related distress symptoms among pregnant women. Women with higher pretest symptom distress scores also had higher posttest symptom distress scores. Based on our outcomes, health care providers should routinely provide exercise counselling to pregnant women. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? • We conducted a cohort study of chronic HCV patients who received IFN-α therapy. • Patients free from depression after IFN-α therapy have a lower risk of developing depression. • A new direction for developing pharmacological prophylaxis strategy against depression. IFN-α-induced depression in patients undergoing hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment provides powerful support for the inflammation hypothesis of depression. Most studies have focused on the occurrence of depressive symptoms, but there has been no study yet in depression-free HCV patients receiving IFN-α. We hypothesized that HCV patients who did not develop depression after IFN-α exposure might have a lower incidence of depressive disorders after the IFN-α treatment. We conducted a twelve-year population-based cohort study of chronic HCV patients who received IFN-α therapy. The data were obtained from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. The study cohort was patients without any depressive disorder nor antidepressant use before and during IFN-α therapy. They were matched randomly by age, sex income and urbanization at a ratio of 1:4 with the control cohort of HCV patients without IFN-α therapy. The follow-up started after the last administration of IFN-α, and the primary outcome was the incidence of depressive disorders after IFN-α therapy. A total of 20,468 depression-free subjects were identified from records of HCV patients receiving IFN-α therapy. Patients without IFN-α-induced depression were associated with a significantly lower incidence (per 10,000 person-years) of new-onset depressive disorders (126.8, 95% Confidential Interval [CI] of 118.5–135.6) as compared to the control cohort (145.2, 95% CI of 140.0–150.6) (p < 0.001). After adjusting for age, sex, income, urbanization and comorbid diseases, the crude hazard ratio for the incident depressive disorder was 0.87 (95% CI, 0.80–0.87) and the adjusted hazard ratios was 0.79 (95% CI, 0.72–0.87) for IFN-α-induced depression-free subjects as compared to the controls. Our study indicates that IFN-α treated depression-free patients have a lower risk for depressive disorders. This hypothesized mechanism might derive from an IFN-α-induced resilience factor as yet to be defined. Our study might suggest a new possibility for a new pharmacological strategy against depression. Background/purpose: Suggestion for the management of idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) includes 6 months of observation, followed with steroid plus alkylating agent. However, delayed immunosuppression exposes the kidneys to persistent damage. This study aimed to examine the benefit of early immunosuppression in IMN patients.Methods: A retrospective study was performed. From 1993 to 2013, 161 IMN patients were enrolled. Patients receiving immunosuppression within 6 months after diagnosis were classified as initial-treatment group, whereas other patients as initial-no-treatment group. The clinical outcomes and complication were examined.Result: Patients in the initial-treatment group had lower serum albumin concentration, less diabetes, and were younger. Steroid monotherapy is the main immunosuppression (64.5%) in this group. The initial-treatment group had a higher complete and partial remission rate than the initial-no-treatment group 6 months (52.9% vs. 35.0%, p=0.05) and 12 months (71.1% vs. 45.0%, p=0.003) after diagnosis. A similar result was seen between initial-steroid monotherapy and initial-no-treatment patients. Early immunosuppression is an independent predictor of remission within 1 year [hazard ratio (HR)=2.09; 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.25-3.49; p=0.005] and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline over 50% during the follow-up. (HR=0.33; 95% CI=0.13-0.86; p=0.02). The initial-treatment group also had a low frequency of eGFR decline over 50% (p=0.001) and low combined end-stage renal disease/mortality (p=0.001) compared with the initial-no-treatment group, but without more immunosuppression-related complication.Conclusion: In contrast to Western countries, early immunosuppression (even steroid monotherapy) in our patients is associated with better remission in the 1st year and renal preserve. Background: Determining the age-specific hospitalization burden associated with seasonal influenza and the (H1N1) 2009 pandemic is important for the development of effective vaccine strategies and clinical management. The aim of this study was to investigate age-specific differences in hospitalization rates during the pandemic and seasonal periods.Methods: Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), we identified hospitalized patients with a principle discharge diagnosis of influenza-related infection (ICD-9-CM 487) between 2009 and 2012.Results: Based on the time distribution of influenza-related hospitalizations and previously reported epidemic periods, the first and second waves of the (H1N1) 2009 pandemic (p1 is known as 2009.07-2010.01, and p2 is known as 2010.12-2011.03) and three seasonal periods (s1 is known as 2010.03-2010.11, s2 is known as 2011.10-2012.03, and s3 is known as 2012.04-2012.10) were found. During these five periods, children younger than 7 years of age consistently had the highest hospitalization rate of the studied age groups. In individuals younger than 50 years of age, the seasonal periods were associated with a significantly lower risk of hospitalization than that of p1 (Relative risk (RR) range = 0.18-0.85); however, they had a significantly higher hospitalization risk for adults over 50 years of age (RR = 1.51-3.22). Individuals over 50 years of age also had a higher intensive care unit admission rate and case fatality ratio than individuals under than 50 years of age during the seasonal periods and especially during the pandemic periods.Conclusions: In both pandemic and seasonal periods, the highest hospitalization rate was observed for children younger than 7 years of age. Adults over 50 years of age had a higher hospitalization risk during the seasonal periods and a higher clinical severity during the pandemic periods. Abstract Pregnant women tend to exercise less than women who have not yet been pregnant. In the present study, which involves two studies, we aimed to construct an effective, individualized exercise counseling model for pregnant women. In study 1, a three-round session that involved 10 multidisciplinary health care experts reached a consensus via the Delphi method. In the preliminary study, two healthy pregnant women were recruited from the prenatal outpatient departments of hospitals in Taipei, Taiwan. Both of them were 32 years old and primipara. The results of study 1, the established five stages of the individualized exercise counseling model for pregnant women were as follows: assessment, defining barriers that interfere with achieving the target, planning, implementation and monitoring, and evaluation. In the preliminary study, we applied this counseling model of study 1 to 2 healthy pregnant women. The 5-stage counseling model can encourage pregnant women to begin to exercise or to continue exercising. We believe that this exercise counseling model can potentially be used by nurses. It can help them to encourage pregnant women to regularly exercise, and to promote exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. Background: Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) has high mortality rate but prognostic factors are not well established. The aim of our study was to evaluate the trend in in-hospital mortality over a period of 11 years and identify factors affecting the clinical outcomes of patients with IPA. Method: We conducted a nationwide inpatient population study using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. A total of 407 IPA patients from 2002 to 2012 were included in the study. Differences in demographics, comorbidities, and treatment were evaluated between in-hospital death group and survival group. Multivariate analysis was also performed to identify risk factors for mortality. Result: Male patients represented 63.14% of the patients (n = 257) and the mean age was 53.15 ± 20.93 years. Hematological cancer (n = 216, 53.07%) and diabetes mellitus (n = 75, 18.43%) were the most common underlying conditions. The overall case fatality rate was 30.22% with female slightly higher then male (32.67% versus 28.79%). The in-hospital case fatality rate increased since 2002 and peaked in 2006. It then declined over time with an in-hospital mortality of 25% in 2012. The in-hospital death group had a higher intubation rate (p<0.0001), a longer ICU stay (p = 0.0062), higher percentages of DM (p = 0.0412) and COPD (p = 0.0178), and a lower percentage of hematological cancer (p = 0.0079) as compared to survivor. The in-hospital death group was more likely to have steroid treatment (p<0.0001), develop acute renal failure (p<0.0001) and other infectious diseases (p = 0.0008) during hospitalization. Multivariate analysis identified female gender, older age (≥ 65 years old), intubation, bone marrow transplantation, acute renal failure, other infectious diseases and steroid use as predictive factors for mortality. Conclusion: The present study shows the trend in mortality among patients with IPA over an 11-year period. Female gender, older age, intubation, bone marrow transplantation, acute renal failure, other infectious diseases and steroid use were identified as risk factors for mortality. Background: Physical activity reduces the risk of maternal disorders during pregnancy. However, many pregnant women reduce their levels of physical activity while pregnant. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the physical activity (total amount, intensity, type) of Taiwanese women during each trimester. Methods: This cross-sectional survey used purposive sampling to enroll 581 Taiwanese women as participants. The physical activity of participants wasmeasured using theMandarin version of the Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire. Results: The levels of household/caregiving activity and occupational activity differed significantly across trimesters. Household/caregiving (43.2%-54.5%) and occupational activity (42.0%-54.0%) accounted for the largest percentages of total energy expenditure for all three trimesters. In terms of total and household/caregiving activities, multiparous women had significantly higher mean energy expenditures than their primiparous peers. Moreover, income had a pervasive influence on all types and amounts of physical activity and energy expenditures, respectively, with the exception of sports/exercise. Conclusions/Implications for Practice: Further careful assessment of the types and intensities of physical activity that are suitable for pregnant women in different parity and income categories in Taiwan is necessary. Furthermore, healthcare providers should encourage pregnant women to use strategies that promote their more regular participation in enjoyable physical activities. In this study, we demonstrate the capability of combining remote sensing and GIS technique to identify and map out the possible landslide and debris flow hazards along the South Link Railway in Taiwan. Using high resolution aerial photography, terrain models, landslide inventories, the disaster prone areas of 3 types of mass movements were identified. In total, 48 slopes hold high landslide susceptibility; 35 torrents have high debris flow susceptibility; the rockfall from 11 sites would reach the railway line. Background: The clinical impact of the galactomannan (GM) test for the diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is controversial. Our study evaluated the incidence and trends of IPA and GM testing in patients with aspergillus infections. Methods: We conducted a nationwide inpatient population study using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. A total of 346 IPA (62.14% male) patients from the years 2002 to 2011 were identified for inclusion in the study. Results: The average incidence of IPA was 1.51 per million person-years. Over the study period, we observed an increasing trend from 0.94 to 2.06 per million person-years (P < 0.0001). We observed male predominance in IPA incidence (M/F: 1.85/1.15). Both males and females showed significantly increasing trends of IPA incidence over time (0.87 to 4.55 and 0.36 to 2.07 per million person-years for the males and females, respectively). GM testing for IPA significantly increased from 2002 to 2011, and the GM test was utilized more frequently for males than females. The increase in the incidence of IPA might be positively associated with the increase in GM testing over the past decade. Conclusion: The incidence rates of both IPA and GM testing have increased over time. GM testing is recommended for the early diagnosis of patients with suspected aspergillosis. Status epilepticus (SE) is a serious neurologic emergency associated with a significant mortality. The objective of this study is to investigate its epidemiology in terms of age- and sex-specific incidences and mortality. By using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database during 2000 to 2011, we identified hospitalized patients with a discharged diagnosis of SE and calculated the incidence and in-hospital mortality of SE with respect to age and sex. The overall incidence of SE was 4.61 per 100,000 person-years, which displayed a “J-shaped” distribution by age with a little higher under the age of 5 and highest over 60 years. The male-to-female rate ratio was 1.57 and it demonstrated a “mountain-shape” across ages with the peak at 45 to 49 years old. The in-hospital mortality was significantly lower in males (7.38%) than in females (11.12%) with an odds ratio of 0.64 (95% CI 0.56-0.72). Notably, the in-hospital mortality for females increased rapidly after the age of 40 to 45 years. The multivariate analysis found males had a significantly lower risk of mortality than females after, but not before, 45 years of age with an odds ratio of 0.56 (95% CI 0.49-0.65). Sex and age are crucial factors associated with the incidence and in-hospital mortality of SE. The females over 45 years of age have a higher risk of occurrence and mortality from SE. This study focused on the landslide case at Su-Hua Highway 115.9k, Taiwan. A preliminary investigation was conducted on geomorphologic features change and landslide mechanisms using digital elevation models, geographical maps, and remote sensing images at different times in conjunction with geological surveys and analysis results. Using the results of geological surveys and physical model experiments, we constructed a discrete element method to simulate the process of landslide movement. The results revealed deformation in the metamorphic rock slopes upstream of 115.9k. The slopes around the erosion gully upstream presented visible slope toes cutting and tension cracks at the crest as well as unstable rock masses. According to the results of numerical simulation for typhoon Megi event, intense rains could induce slippage in the rock debris/masses in the source area, initially at a speed of 5-20 m/s. Subsequently, steeper terrain could cause the rock debris/masses to accelerate to form a high-speed (>30 m/s) debris slide quickly moving downstream to form an alluvial fan downstream by the sea. For instance, seismic activity inducing the dilatation of earth can disturb groundwater level fluctuation as observed in groundwater wells. In this research, spectral analysis in the frequency domain was used to quantitatively evaluate coherence between groundwater head fluctuations and the ground motions recorded in Taiwan from a distant earthquake, the 2011 Tohoku earthquake in northern Honshu, Japan with magnitude of 9. The relationship between groundwater fluctuations and the decomposed ground motions of Rayleigh waves are clearly identified. By analyzing autospectral density, cross-spectral density, and resultant coherence for the seismograms and groundwater head, it was found that the Rayleigh waves dominated the groundwater fluctuations at period of about 21–32s for six pair of groundwater and seismograms of broadband distributed around Taiwan; fluctuations of groundwater are highly coherent with the radial and vertical components of ground motions. Our analysis also shows the time from event to station for Rayleigh waves ranged from 780 to 900s approximately. Wave parameter for seismic event to station of groundwater and seismograms were also identified as 3.0–3.5km/s and 64–110km for wave velocity and wave length, respectively. The article discusses research investigating the acute effect of drop jump (DJ) protocols with different volumes and recovery time on countermovement jump (CMJ) performance. 10 male collegiate volleyball players performed a series of CMJs and one of two randomly-assigned DJ protocols. Results from a repeated-measures analysis of variance, used to examine the differences between training volumes and recovery times in CMJ (HCMJ) height and ground reaction force, are discussed.

Captured CO2 could be deliberately injected into the ocean at great depth, where most of it would remain isolated from the atmosphere for centuries. CO2 can be transported via pipeline or ship for release in the ocean or on the sea floor. No matter what for medium depth or deep sea, it appears that a potential area exists between 122–122.5°E and 21.8–22.3°N for CO2 sequestration. The east coast of Taiwan can be a candidate for CO2 temporary storage or transmitted plant. To have whole picture of assessment of sea level fluctuation, a completed statistical summary of seasonal sea level at six tidal gauge stations along the east coast of Taiwan is provided herein. Seasonal sea level time series is analyzed using spectral analysis in frequency domain to identify periodic component and phase propagation, especially for the astronomical-driven tidal effects. It identifies that the semi-diurnal and diurnal components in the resultant time series are related to astronomical tides M2, and K1 and O1, respectively. It demonstrates a full analysis of sea level variations, and results can be useful when construction of testing or operating facilities on sea surface becomes desirable in the future. Summary: It is frequently found that the fluctuations observed in aquifer-well systems demonstrate high coherence to nearby boundary disturbances, or more specific, in response to the vertical motion of seismic Rayleigh waves. This study derives the spectral relationship between groundwater head and vertical displacement disturbed by Rayleigh waves in the time-frequency domain. Essentially, the groundwater storage property, e.g. storage coefficient or specific storage, representing the amount of water released from storage when the head changes from water expansion and aquifer compression occur. They can be determined using the spectral representation of the factors associated to groundwater head and Rayleigh waves. For this study, the Sumatra-Andaman Islands Earthquake with magnitude 9 at UT 2004/12/26 00:58:53.45 is used as the seismic source while a groundwater monitoring well and a seismological station located on the east of Taiwan acted as the receivers. The time series data associated with the observed groundwater head and vertical displacement of Rayleigh waves are used to evaluate spectral response analyzing the autospectral density, cross-spectral density, and coherence between them. The resultant spectral estimates can be used to determine the storage coefficient and specific storage of the case site to be on the order of 10−3 and 10−4 (m−1), respectively. In addition, the matrix bulk modulus also demonstrated a linear trend with porosity by taking the value of standard water modulus. It suggests that the storage of an aquifer can be robustly estimated using spectral representations and responses from head changes in groundwater and vertical displacement of Rayleigh waves. Background/purpose: Most women undergo a hysterectomy to relieve symptoms and improve their quality of life rather than to solve a life-threatening problem. We used hierarchical linear modeling to evaluate the changes, in a 6-8-week period, in the quality of life of women who had undergone hysterectomy.Methods: This was a prospective follow-up study of 64 women who had undergone hysterectomy and 68 controls of similar age and marital status. A quasi-experimental design was used. The World Health Organization Questionnaire on Quality of Life: BREF-Taiwan Version was used to assess quality of life before surgery, at discharge, and 2 and then 6-8 weeks after surgery. The control group was measured three times: after their initial hospital visit, and 2 and then 6-8 weeks later.Results: Women with hysterectomy (H-group) had significantly lower scores for the physical health dimension of quality of life at all time-points as compared with the control group, yet postoperatively, they showed a more dramatic increase in this dimension. As for the group mean trajectories, the vaginal hysterectomy (VH) subgroup had a relatively low quality of life immediately after surgery, which then gradually improved, especially in the dimension of physical health. As for the social relationships dimension, the abdominal hysterectomy (AH) subgroup showed an upward curve similar to the pattern of their physical health dimension. The psychological and environmental dimensions did not show a clear trajectory for either group. As for individual trajectories, the social relationships and environmental dimensions showed different patterns for women with hysterectomy.Conclusion: Hysterectomy can improve physical health. In the VH subgroup, physical health was improved significantly, especially from 6-8 weeks postoperatively. In the AH subgroup, physical health and social relationships were improved significantly postoperatively. Social relationships and environmental dimensions tended to show different patterns for women with hysterectomy. The study demonstrates spectral relationships in the time–frequency domain for one‐dimensional groundwater flow in aquifers bounded by fluctuating boundaries. By nature, the solutions of spectral equations are non‐linear complex functions. To determine hydraulic diffusivity in the governing equations, it is required that the data are collected from the spectra of water levels at the fluctuating boundaries and observation wells. Hydraulic diffusivity thus can be obtained by an iterative inverse approach. This paper presents an application in Pingtung County of Taiwan to determine the hydraulic diffusivity of a sandy aquifer under confined conditions. Spectral density function of water level obtained from tidal boundaries and observation wells are used to approximate hydraulic diffusivity, which yields an averaged value of 1·26 × 106 m2/h. Groundwater is widely used for drinking, irrigation, and aquaculture in the Pingtung Plain, Southwestern Taiwan. The overexploitation and poor quality of groundwater in some areas of the Pingtung Plain pose great challenges for the safe use and sustainable management of groundwater resources. Thus, establishing an effective management plan for multi-purpose groundwater utilization in the Pingtung Plain is imperative. Considerations of the quality of the groundwater and potential impact on the aquifer of groundwater exploitation are paramount to multi-purpose groundwater utilization management. This study proposes a zonal management plan for the multi-purpose use of groundwater in the Pingtung Plain. The zonal management plan is developed by considering the spatial variability of the groundwater quality and the impact on the aquifer, which is defined as the ratio of the actual groundwater extraction rate to transmissivity. A geostatistical Kriging approach is used to spatially delineate the safe zones based on the water quality standards applied in the three groundwater utilization sectors. Suitable zones for the impact on the aquifer are then spatially determined. The evaluation results showing the safe water quality zones for the three types of utilization demands and suitable zones for the impact on aquifer are integrated to create a zonal management map for multi-purpose groundwater utilization which can help government administrators to establish a water resource management strategy for safe and sustainable use of groundwater to meet multi-purpose groundwater utilization requirements in the Pingtung Plain. • The PS-InSAR analysis provided the wide-range sediment change with spatial distribution and time series in Daan River, Taiwan. • Analysis of PS-InSAR provides seasonal gridding of river topographic variability and erosion/deposition volume. • A significant positive correlation was found between the variation of water bodies in different hydrological seasons and the annual rainfall in both dry and wet seasons. For the purpose of investigating spatiotemporal characteristics of river sediment behavior, we proposed a strategy integrating the PS-InSAR technique together with gridding spatial calculation to estimate time series change of sediment volume over the Baibufan section in Daan River in Taiwan. Firstly, the PS-InSAR performance based on ascending/descending and all-season/dry-season-only images were examined to identify the most optimal Sentinel-1 image data set. Subsequently, the estimated results were validated through internal and external validations. Once the PS-InSAR results were proved reliable, we utilized the advantages of the long-term wide-extent observation to investigate the sediment behavior over sequential wet/dry seasons and relatively long hydrological seasons. Based on the estimation of sediment volume change, the most severe erosion occurred in the wet season starting from 2019/04. The erosion volume reached 1513.652 m3 and 1194.829 m3, respectively, in high and median water coverage areas. Moreover, based on the sediment maps, the sediment distribution along the river was visualized, in which the regions prone to erosion or deposition were also identified. As the strategy for investigating the detailed spatial- and temporal-wise river sediment was proved feasible, we are able to perform a regular observation to determine the deposition and erosion zones. Fractures are a common reason for hospital admissions. However, regional and short-term studies show a varying incidence rate (IR) of fractures, and most of the surveys were conducted from only a few medical centers. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the epidemiological data of fracture hospitalizations of middle-aged and elderly persons in Taiwan between 2000 and 2015. Data from fractures occurring between 2000 and 2015 were obtained from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan for this study. The IR of fracture admission in patients, aged 40 years or older at the time of admission and first-time diagnosed with a fracture following admission, was calculated. We found that the IR of the fracture hospitalizations declined considerably from 95.70 per 10,000 person-years in 2000, to 68.48 per 10,000 person-years in 2015. The three most common fracture hospitalizations accounting for more than 50% of all fractures were fractures of the femur/hip, radius or ulna, and vertebral column. The IR of fracture hospitalization increased with age and was found to be higher in women than in men. The most common cause of fracture hospitalization for men and patients under 65 years of age was traffic accidents. In contrast, falls were the most frequent causes of fracture hospitalization for women and patients over 65 years of age. Background: Evidence indicates that breast cancer survivors with reproductive concerns have a poorer quality of life than survivors without fertility concerns. There is a lack of reliable and valid assessments of fertility intention among breast cancer survivors. Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop and validate the Fertility Intention Scale (FIS) that is sensitive to the fertility intention of women with breast cancer. Methods: A literature review and a qualitative study were conducted to generate the items in the scale. Content validity was evaluated by 15 experts, and face validity was assessed by 10 patients with cancer. Factor analysis was used to assess construct validity, and criterion validity was evaluated using two percentile items of fertility willingness. We developed and examined the validity and reliability of the FIS using a sample of 178 patients with breast cancer who had completed chemotherapy. Results: The Cronbach's alpha calculated for the FIS (15 items) was .88. The factor analysis performed for the construct validity of the scale identified four factors that accounted for approximately 68.72% of the total variance. These four factors were pregnancy risk, disease control, social support, and happiness. There was a significant correlation between the total FIS and the level of desiring fertility preservation or pregnancy. Conclusions/Implications for Practice: The FIS has acceptable reliability, content validity, and construct validity. This scale is appropriate for use in research and clinical practice settings to evaluate the risk--benefit perceptions of pregnancy in patients with breast cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the sex-specific mortality risk and causes of death soon after hip fracture in Taiwan. The objective of this study was to evaluate the 30-day mortality risk and cause of death in patients with hip fracture and identify its associated risk factors. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan from 2000 to 2015. This study included patients aged 50 years or older who were admitted to a hospital with a hip fracture diagnosis for the first time. Of 285,891 patients hospitalized for their first hip fracture, 8,505 (2.98%) died within 30 days. The mortality risk of hip fracture declined from 3.76% in 2000 to 2.92% in 2015. Circulatory system diseases like ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease were the most common cause of death and accounted for 22% of deaths within 30 days after fracture. Accidents and unintentional injuries caused 18% of deaths, followed by malignant neoplasms in 10% of deaths. Multivariate Cox regression identified older age, male sex, higher Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), suburban or rural residence, and lower income as risk factors for hip fracture mortality. The 30-day mortality risk of hip fractures has decreased but remains correlated with male sex, older age, and comorbidities. Circulatory diseases were the main cause of death. Objective: With global aging, the occurrence of stroke and associated outcomes like dementia are on the rise. Seizures and epilepsy are common poststroke complications and have a strong connection to subsequent dementia. This study examines the relationship between poststroke seizures (PSS) or poststroke epilepsy (PSE) and dementia using a national health care database., Methods: We conducted a retrospective study using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database from 2009 to 2020. We identified acute stroke patients from 2010 to 2015, excluding those with pre-existing neurological conditions. Based on age, sex, stroke severity level, and the year of index stroke, patients with PSS or PSE were matched to those without. The main outcome was incident dementia., Results: This study included 62 968 patients with an average age of 63 years, with males accounting for 62.9%. Of them, 60.3% had ischemic strokes, and 39.7% had hemorrhagic strokes. After an average follow-up period of 5.2 years, dementia developed in 15.9% of patients who had PSS or PSE, as opposed to 8.4% of those without these conditions. A time-dependent Fine and Gray competing risk analysis showed that PSS and PSE were significantly associated with dementia across all stroke types. Subgroup analyses revealed significantly increased risk of dementia across all age groups (<50, 50-64, and ≥65 years), sexes, and various stroke severity levels. The link between PSS or PSE and dementia was particularly pronounced in men, with a less distinct correlation in women., Significance: The risk of incident dementia was higher in patients with PSS or PSE.
