The aerodynamic sizes of bioaerosols may significantly affect their behaviors, respiratory deposition and biodiversity. The respirable bacterial size, biodiversity, and human-associated bacteria (HAB) related bioaerosols were evaluated at three kindergartens in Taiwan. Kindergartens A, B, and C were in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas, respectively. A six-stage viable Andersen cascade impactor was used to collect bioaerosols and to determine their size distributions. The geometric mean diameter (GMD), geometric standard deviation (GSD), heat maps, and uniformity were used to evaluate the association of bacteria characteristics. A BD Phoenix-100 automated interpretation system was used to identify the airborne bacteria species. The results revealed that 1425 colonies of the sampled airborne bacteria contained 63 species in 29 genera, and overall, 63.0% were HABs. The most abundant phylum was Actinobacteria (56.6 ± 22.2%) and Firmicutes (31.6 ± 22.3%), and from the taxonomic analysis, both airborne Micrococcus and the Staphylococcus aureus are the dominant genus. All the bacteria aerodynamic particle size distributions were polydisperse distributions. The heat map and uniformity analysis had revealed most of the sampled bioaerosols distributed between 1.1–3.3 μm, and most of the polydisperse airborne Streptococcus spp. had a size in the respirable range, due to urbanization, they have potentially contributed to respiratory risk in the kindergartens. The Shannon diversity index (H) and inverse Simpson diversity index (D) of the bioaerosols in urban kindergarten were negatively correlated with GMD and GSD. The Pearson correlations revealed that the kindergarten in the rural area, with a higher temperature, a lower relative humidity, and a lower CO 2 concentration than the others, tended to have the largest H and D values (P < 0.05). Multiple and stepwise regression revealed that bioaerosol aerodynamic size was statistically significantly correlated with H (P = 0.001) and D values (P = 0.002). BACKGROUND: The investigation of hospital air quality has been conducted in wards, ICUs, operating theaters, and public areas. Few studies have assessed air quality in respiratory care centers (RCCs), especially in mechanically ventilated patients with open suctioning. METHODS: The RCC air quality indices (temperature, relative humidity, levels of CO2, total volatile organic compounds, particulate matter [PM], bacteria, and fungi) were monitored over 1 y. The air around the patient’s head was sampled during open suctioning to examine the probability of bioaerosol exposure affecting health-care workers. RESULTS: This investigation found that the levels of indoor air pollutants (CO2, PM, bacteria, and fungi) were below the indoor air quality standard set by the Taiwan Environmental Protection Agency. Meanwhile, the levels of total volatile organic compounds sometimes exceeded the indoor air quality standard, particularly in August. The identified bacterial genera included Micrococcus species, Corynebacterium species, and Staphylococcus species, and the predominant fungal genera included yeast, Aspergillus species, Scopulariopsis species, and Trichoderma species. Additionally, airborne PM2.5, PM1, and bacteria were clearly raised during open suctioning in mechanically ventilated patients. This phenomenon demonstrated that open suctioning may increase the bacterial exposure risk of health-care workers. CONCLUSIONS: RCC air quality deserves long-term monitoring and evaluation. Bioaerosols have been found in many occupational environments, including animal feeding houses, poultry slaughter houses, and cotton textile plants. This study was undertaken to examine a group of bioaerosols, the endotoxins, fungi, and bacteria, inside two textile factories over 3 years in Taiwan, where temperature and humidity are usually high year-round. Airborne dust was collected with filter cassettes attached to personal pumps and analyzed by the Kinetic Limulus Assay with Resistant-parallel-line Estimation. For fungi and bacteria determination, samples were collected using duplicated single-stage impactors, and organisms were counted after incubation. Endotoxin was the ajor contamination inside textile plants. Indoor levels were substantially higher than outdoor concentrations by 63- to 278-fold. The average values of fungi inside and outside the plants were not significantly different. Airborne bacteria levels were higher inside the plants as compared to outside. The carding sites, using only cotton, had extremely high endotoxin levels, greater than those at sites using synthetic fibers. Cotton, may be a major source of endotoxin contamination. In conclusion, the early stage of textile processing seems to generate high endotoxin and bacteria contamination. Priorities should be given to occupational hygiene programs for workers at various sites in textile plants. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Long-range transport (LRT) reportedly carries air pollutants and microorganisms to downwind areas. LRT can be of various types, such as dust storm (DS) and frontal pollution (FP); however, studies comparing their effects on bioaerosols are lacking. This study evaluated the effect of LRT on viral and bacterial concentrations in Northern Taiwan. When LRT occurred and possibly affected Taiwan from August 2013 to April 2014, air samples (before, during, and after LRT) were collected in Cape Fugui (CF, Taiwan's northernmost point) and National Taiwan University (NTU). Reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was applied to quantify influenza A virus. qPCR and qPCR coupled with propidium monoazide were, respectively, used to quantify total and viable bacteria. Types and occurrence of LRT were confirmed according to the changing patterns of meteorological factors and air pollution, air mass sources (HYSPLIT model), and satellite images. Two Asian DS and three FP cases were included in this study. Influenza A virus was detected only on days before and during FP occurred on January 3–5, 2014, with concentrations of 0.87 and 10.19 copies/m3, respectively. For bacteria, the increase in concentrations of total and viable cells during Asian DSs (17–19 and 25–29 November 2013) was found at CF only (from 3.13 to 3.40 and from 2.62 to 2.85 log copies/m3, respectively). However, bacterial levels at NTU and CF both increased during FP and lasted for 2 days after FP. In conclusion, LRT increased the levels of influenza A virus and bacteria in the ambient air of Northern Taiwan, particularly at CF. During and 2 days (at least) after LRT, people should avoid outdoor activities, especially in case of FP. Machine industry accounts for the highest proportion of primary industry in Taiwan. Long-term exposure to metalworking fluid aerosols may pose significant threats to the health of workers. The aims of this study were to verify the efficacy of intervention methods in reducing airborne bacterial concentrations as well as effects on aerosol particle size distribution. This study evaluated airborne bacterial concentrations in a large precision machinery factory in Taichung, Taiwan, before and after the implementation of intervention methods. The installation of local exhaust systems and improvement of the operation mode were used as intervention methods. Concentration and size distribution of bacteria in the metal working environment were assessed using Andersen one-stage and six-stage viable impactors, respectively. The analytical results indicate that most bacterial concentrations were less than the recommended concentrations in the indoor air quality standards (500 CFU/m 3 ) proposed by the United States Association of Advancing Occupational and Environmental Health (US ACGIH) before the installation of local exhaust systems. There was no significant difference in bacterial concentrations before and after the installation of the local exhaust and the intervention effect on reducing bacterial exposure was not as expected. The bacterial concentrations were significantly lowered in the Z region after improving the operation mode. The particle size of bioaerosols <7.0 μm was also substantially reduced. Improper operation modes are likely to expose employees to higher concentrations of bacteria within a short time period. Jumping on the bed is a favorite behavior of children; however, no study has investigated the increased air pollutants resulting from jumping on the bed. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the elevated concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and bioaerosols from jumping on the bed and making the bed. Simulation of jumping on the bed and making the bed was performed at sixty schoolchildren's houses in Taiwan. PM 10 , PM 2.5 , PM 1 (PM with aerodynamic diameter less than 10, 2.5, and 1 μm, respectively) and airborne bacteria, fungi and endotoxin concentrations were simultaneously measured over simulation and background periods. Our results show the increase of PM 10 , PM 2.5 , PM 1 , airborne bacteria and fungi through the behavior of jumping on the bed (by 414 μg m-3, 353 μg m-3, 349 μg m-3, 6569 CFU m-3 and 978 CFU m-3, respectively). When making the bed, the PM 10 , PM 2.5 , PM 1 , airborne bacteria and fungi also significantly increased by 4.69 μg m-3, 4.09 μg m-3, 4.15 μg m-3, 8569 CFU m-3, and 779 CFU m-3, respectively. Airborne endotoxin concentrations significantly increased by 21.76 EU m-3 following jumping on the bed and making the bed. Moreover, when jumping on the bed, higher PM 2.5 and PM 1 concentrations in houses with furry pets rather than no furry pets, and less airborne fungi in apartments than in townhouses were found. For making the bed, lower airborne fungi was found in houses using essential oils rather than no essential oils using. The airborne endotoxin concentrations were positively associated with furry pets and smokers in the homes and negatively correlated to the home with window opening with a statistical significance during the periods of jumping on the bed and making the bed.
