The article presents information on archaeological excavations in Sydney, New South Wales, which uncovered the pottery of Staffordshire, England, potter Thomas Ball. The author comments on the excavation of lead-glazed pottery attributed to Ball, focusing on evidence that the bases of broken pottery were reused as shelving or props in kilns. Manufacturing defects found in Ball's pottery are also reviewed, which are suspected to be the result of Ball's lack of familiarity with the combustible local materials and clays of New South Wales.
