The fertility pattern changes over time, which makes it complicated to predict future family planning patterns. The present study aims at studying factors relevant for childbearing decisions in Sweden, which is a unique north western nation with regard to family politics. Nowhere there is much done to secure safety of finances and employment during the early stage of parenthood. The on-going baby boom in Sweden can primarily be explained as a compensation. For previously delayed births. Many women who did wait with family formation started their families during the late eighties. To understand fertility patterns it is of interest to find out why people have children. Several researchers have dealt with this issue by relating child-bearing to human values. Most fertility research has dealt with women, due to the presumption that although the decision to have a child is made by the couple together, women are generally more committed to the decision and that data from males would be redundant since the females could be asked about their husbands' attitudes.
