This paper analyzes how the relation between childhood and nature contributes to the formation of identities though childhood memories written for archival purposes. Archival research lets us consider how written childhood memories of nature are formed, producing social identities through practices of archiving. The archived memories of 50 people in Sweden are analyzed, concentrating on how they described their childhood memories of nature. Understanding memories as performances of identity can give important answers as to how the idealized relationship between nature and childhood is constructed in the specific context of archivation. • Only half of the sample had received training in child interviewing. • Child Protective Services rarely used research-based child interview methods. • Props were commonly used when interviewing children. • Many participants held beliefs in favor of the possibility of repressing and recovering memories. • We encourage the Swedish government to implement national guidelines for child interviewing in the Child Protective Services. The Child Protective Services (CPS) can be prominent actors in child abuse investigations as they often conduct the first safety assessment upon receiving a report of concern for a child. As part of this assessment, CPS may conduct an interview with the child. However, to date, little is known about how these interviews are conducted. The present study aimed to shed light on Swedish social workers' experience with interviewing children and knowledge about children's memory and witness abilities. A total of 204 social workers participated in an online survey and answered questions concerning memory functioning and interviewing children about suspected abuse. Responses were analyzed using qualitative (content analyses) and quantitative (descriptive) approaches. The main findings concern a lack of standardized interviewing guidelines, with CPS workers instead using various interviewing techniques with limited empirical support. When asked to elaborate on the challenges they perceived interviewing children, many mentioned the difficulty of asking proper questions. A few expressed feeling unequipped for the task of interviewing children. Further, participants' knowledge regarding children's memory varied. Many expressed awareness that memories can be vulnerable to suggestion and that emotions cannot verify a memory's authenticity. However, participants were more insecure regarding the possibility of repressing and, subsequently, recovering memories. Improvement is required; CPS needs further education and support when conducting interviews with children regarding suspected abuse. Background Research on retelling ability and cognition is limited in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and speech impairment. Aims To explore the impact of expressive and receptive language, narrative discourse dimensions (Narrative Assessment Profile measures), auditory and visual memory, theory of mind (ToM) and non-verbal cognition on the retelling ability of children with CP and speech impairment. Methods & Procedures Fifteen speaking children with speech impairment (seven girls, eight boys) (mean age = 11 years, SD = 1;4 years), and different types of CP and different levels of gross motor and cognitive function participated in the present study. Story retelling skills were tested and analysed with the Bus Story Test (BST) and the Narrative Assessment Profile (NAP). Receptive language ability was tested with the Test for Reception of Grammar-2 (TROG-2) and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test - IV (PPVT-IV). Non-verbal cognitive level was tested with the Raven's coloured progressive matrices (RCPM), memory functions assessed with the Corsi block-tapping task (CB) and the Digit Span from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-III. ToM was assessed with the false belief items of the two story tests 'Kiki and the Cat' and 'Birthday Puppy'. Outcomes & Results The children had severe problems with retelling ability corresponding to an age-equivalent of 5;2-6;9 years. Receptive and expressive language, visuo-spatial and auditory memory, non-verbal cognitive level and ToM varied widely within and among the children. Both expressive and receptive language correlated significantly with narrative ability in terms of NAP total scores, so did auditory memory. Conclusion & Implications The results suggest that retelling ability in the children with CP in the present study is dependent on language comprehension and production, and memory functions. Aim: To test the feasibility of the Amsterdam memory and attention training for children (Amat-c) in Swedish children with acquired brain damage.Methods: Amat-c consists of structured exercises in specific attention and memory techniques. Three Swedish children aged 9-16 y with acquired brain injuries and related memory and attention deficits trained with the Amat-c method for half an hour a day in school or at home interactively with a teacher or parent for a period of 20 wk.Results: All children and their coaches completed the training without interruption. The results showed an improvement in several neuropsychological tests of sustained and selective attention as well as in memory performance. Questionnaires filled in by parents and teachers indicate that, using the Amat-c method, the children learned strategies that improved their school achievement and self-image.Conclusions: The Amat-c is a valuable treatment option for improving cognitive efficiency in children with acquired brain injuries. The results indicate improved performance in several psychometric measurements. On the basis of these results, the second step will be to modify the complexity and duration of the method, as well as to integrate a reward system before further evaluating the efficacy in a larger controlled study.
