Polymorphisms in VEGFA and KDR encoding proteins have been associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk. We leveraged a collective sample from Sweden, Poland, and Australia to investigate the association of functional polymorphisms in VEGFA and KDR with susceptibility to ACL injury risk. Using a case–control genetic association approach, polymorphisms in VEGFA and KDR were genotyped and haplotypes inferred from 765 controls, and 912 cases clinically diagnosed with ACL rupture. For VEGFA, there was a significant overrepresentation of the rs2010963 CC genotype (p = 0.0001, false discovery rate [FDR]: p = 0.001, odds ratio [OR]: 2.16, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.47–3.19) in the combined ACL group (18%) compared to the combined control group (11%). The VEGFA (rs699947 C/A, rs1570360 G/A, rs2010963 G/C) A‐A‐G haplotype was significantly (p = 0.010, OR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.69–1.05) underrepresented in the combined ACL group (23%) compared to the combined control group (28%). In addition, the A‐G‐G construct was significantly (p = 0.036, OR: 0.81, 95% CI: 0.64–1.02) underrepresented in the combined ACL group (12%) compared to the combined CON group (16%). Our findings support the association of the VEGFA rs2010963 CC genotype with increased risk and (ii) the VEGFA A‐A‐G haplotype with a reduced risk, and are in alignment with the a priori hypothesis. Collectively identifying a genetic interval within VEGFA to be implicated in ACL risk modulation and highlight further the importance of vascular regulation in ligament biology. Uncertainties regarding the magnitude of health effects following exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation remain a matter of concern both for professionals and for the public. There is consensus within the international radiation research community that more research is required on biological effects of radiation doses below 100 mGy applied at low dose rates. Moreover, there is a demand for increasing education and training of future radiation researchers and regulators. Research, education and training is primarily carried out at universities but university-based radiation research is often hampered by limited access to radiation sources. The aim of the present report is to describe small and cost-effective low activity gamma and alpha sources that can easily be installed and used in university laboratories. A gamma radiation source was made from an euxenite-(Y) rock (Y,Ca,Ce,U,Th)(Nb,Ta,Ti)2O6) that was found in an abandoned mine in Sweden. It allows exposing cells grown in culture dishes to radiation at a dose rate of 50 µGy/h and lower. Three alpha sources were custom-made and yield a dose rate of 1 mGy/h each. The construction, dosimetry and cellular effects of the sources are described. This paper presents results of morphological and petrological analyses of ground stone tool assemblage acquired from late Bronze Age settlement site at Niemczańska, Wrocław, Poland. The collection of six tools is functionally and petrologically diverse but comparable in terms of physical and mechanical properties, i.e. hardness and wear resistance. Exclusively hard and quartz-rich rocks were selected for tools production (granites, gneisses and sandstones). We applied complementary approaches: polarizing optical microscopy with modal mineralogical analyses, scanning electron microscopy and electron probe microanalyser for the petrographic and raw material provenance study. The results of our observations lead to the conclusion that raw material was collected locally from the surface deposits associated with glacial erratics brought to the area during MIS-16 to Saalian glaciations from Sweden and Åland Islands. Our observations confirm that erratics were a common source of raw material for the Odra Basin populations during the Bronze Age instead of autochthonic Sudetic or allogenic materials. Agricultural (grinder and grinding disc) and non-agricultural (whetstone, pad/fragment of a grinding disc, grinder and smoother) functions are recognised, based on morphological observations and use-wear traces. Three activity zones are distinguished at the site – production, habitation and possible cult zone with lithic tools spread within production and habitation zones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
