Traditional medicine is a reliable source for treating many diseases in Sudan. It is widely recognized in Sudan, as no Sudanese house is devoid of medicinal herbs. The Sudanese people and their historical stock of knowledge are distinguished by their knowledge and the many applications of herbs in treatment. This reference paper aims to collect all the available information about the use of medicinal plants in Sudan to treat disease or prevent it. Sudanese medicinal plants include a variety of plants and there are many medicinal applications for these plants in the world. According to the information reached by the paper, there are many therapeutic medical applications of these plants in the treatment of various bacterial infections, including digestive diseases, malaria, diabetes, rheumatic pain, respiratory diseases, jaundice, urinary tract infections, wounds, cancer and various microbial infections, according to the information reached by the paper. This reference is for a few groups of Sudanese medicinal plants such as tamarind, hibiscus, Acacia nilotica, Combretum hartmannianum, and Guiera senegalensis, etc. This review article also showed that these plants contain many biologically active substances as active ingredients, including flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, stimulants, terpenes, tannins, fatty acids and essential oils. Even though Sudanese people use herbal medicine to treat a wide range of illnesses, more research is needed to show that these plants are safe and effective for people to use. Background: The association between previous spontaneous abortion and preeclampsia is not yet fully understood. The current study was conducted to assess the association between previous spontaneous abortion and preeclampsia among pregnant women in Sudan.Methods: A case-control study (involving 180 women in each study group) was conducted at Saad Abuelela Hospital, Khartoum, Sudan. The cases were pregnant women with preeclampsia, while the control group included healthy pregnant women. The participants' sociodemographic, obstetric, and clinical characteristics were assessed via a questionnaire.Results: There was no significant difference in the age, parity, education level, employment status, blood group, body mass index, and hemoglobin level between the patient and control groups. Forty (22.2%) women with preeclampsia and 68 (37.8%) women in the control group had a history of spontaneous abortion (p = 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis (adjusted) revealed that women with a history of spontaneous abortion had a lower risk of preeclampsia than those without a history of spontaneous abortion [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 0.44, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.26‒0.73]. However, women with a history of preeclampsia had a higher risk of recurrence of preeclampsia (AOR = 1.92, 95% CI = 1.11‒3.32).Conclusion: The present study revealed that previous spontaneous abortion reduced the risk of preeclampsia by 59.0%. Background and objective: The importance of new sources of oils has recently emerged, one such source being Moringa. There is an urgent need to choose the most appropriate extraction method regarding its impact on the properties and stability of the extracted oil. The objective of this research work is to study the impact of two extraction methods on the chemical and thermal properties as well as the antimicrobial activity of Moringa peregrina seed oil. Methods: Moringa peregrina seeds were collected from their original growing locations in Sudan. Cold pressing (CP) and maceration in n-hexane (MH) was used to extract the oil, and their yields were found to be 9.12% and 21.87%, respectively. Chemical properties of the oil were studied and in each case triplicate analyses were completed. The mean and the standard deviation were then determined (mean±SD). Results: Besides the peroxide value, the chemical properties of the oil extracted by the two methods remained relatively unchanged. Additionally, the results revealed a higher activity of the cold pressed oil against all tested organisms (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans) compared to the one obtained by maceration method. Furthermore, the thermogravimetric analysis and derivative thermogravimetric analysis (TGA and DTGA) demonstrated significant variations in the onset of degradation between the oil samples extracted by the two methods: 200◦C (cold pressing) against 274◦C (maceration). The maximum mass loss for the oil extracted by the two methods does not differ significantly, and the final degradation temperature was similar. Conclusion: The differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) thermograms for the oil extracted by the two methods showed somewhat similar characteristics regarding the heating curves, while the cooling curves differed considerably. Background: The Leishmania OligoC-TesT and NASBA-Oligochromatography (OC) were recently developed for simplified and standardised molecular detection of Leishmania parasites in clinical specimens. We here present the phase II evaluation of both tests for diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) in Sudan. Methodology: The diagnostic accuracy of the tests was evaluated on 90 confirmed and 90 suspected VL cases, 7 confirmed and 8 suspected CL cases, 2 confirmed PKDL cases and 50 healthy endemic controls from Gedarif state and Khartoum state in Sudan. Principal Findings: The OligoC-TesT as well as the NASBA-OC showed a sensitivity of 96.8% (95% CI: 83.8%–99.4%) on lymph node aspirates and of 96.2% (95% CI: 89.4%–98.7%) on blood from the confirmed VL cases. The sensitivity on bone marrow was 96.9% (95% CI: 89.3%–99.1%) and 95.3% (95% CI: 87.1%–98.4%) for the OligoC-TesT and NASBA-OC, respectively. All confirmed CL and PKDL cases were positive with both tests. On the suspected VL cases, we observed a positive OligoC-TesT and NASBA-OC result in 37.1% (95% CI: 23.2%–53.7%) and 34.3% (95% CI: 20.8%–50.9%) on lymph, in 72.7% (95% CI: 55.8%–84.9%) and 63.6% (95% CI: 46.6%–77.8%) on bone marrow and in 76.9% (95% CI: 49.7%–91.8%) and 69.2% (95% CI: 42.4%–87.3%) on blood. Seven out of 8 CL suspected cases were positive with both tests. The specificity on the healthy endemic controls was 90% (95% CI: 78.6%–95.7%) for the OligoC-TesT and 100% (95% CI: 92.9%–100.0%) for the NASBA-OC test. Conclusions: Both tests showed high sensitivity on lymph, blood and tissue scrapings for diagnosis of VL, CL and PKDL in Sudan, but the specificity for clinical VL was significantly higher with NASBA-OC. Author Summary: The leishmaniases are a group of vector-borne diseases caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania. The parasites are transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies and can cause, depending on the infecting species, three clinical manifestations of leishmaniasis: visceral leishmaniasis (VL), post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) and cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) including the mucocutaneous form. VL, PKDL as well as CL are endemic in several parts of Sudan, and VL especially represents a major health problem in this country. Molecular tests such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or nucleic acid sequence based assay (NASBA) are powerful techniques for accurate detection of the parasite in clinical specimens, but broad use is hampered by their complexity and lack of standardisation. Recently, the Leishmania OligoC-TesT and NASBA-Oligochromatography were developed as simplified and standardised PCR and NASBA formats.
