The agricultural use of saline table olive processing wastewater enables the implementation of closed water cycles in this socioeconomically important industry for rural southern Spain and relieves environmental, economic, and legal burdens. To allow growers to evaluate and guarantee adequate long-term soil and plant conditions when irrigating with such regenerated wastewaters, efficient soil monitoring strategies are needed. Field-scale monitoring with electromagnetic induction sensing, after one (2013) and five years (2017) of irrigation with regenerated wastewater with average electrical conductivity (EC) near 6 dS m−1 in an olive orchard in southern Spain, showed accumulation of highly conductive material in the subsoil in relation to local topography and soil characteristics. Laboratory analysis of the soil water revealed strongly varying patterns of EC during the growing season and across the olive grove, which were attributed to dilution and concentration effects due to rainfall and evaporation, respectively. Visual inspection and leaf analyses revealed no negative effects on the olive trees. Apparent electrical conductivity (ECa), measured in between the tree rows in 2013, showed a linear relationship with surface soil EC1:5 under the drippers and allowed identification of areas with high ECa in the low elevation zones of the farm, due to the presence of shallow perched saline water tables. A second ECa measurement in 2017 showed similar spatial ECa patterns and was used to estimate the distribution of soil EC across the soil profile using inversion software, although no unique field-wide relationships with soil properties could be inferred, possibly as a consequence of spatially variable soil clay and water contents, due to the influence of the topography. Despite the implementation of a more conservative irrigation strategy since 2015, results showed that the salinity has increased since 2013 in about 15% of the study area, with the largest increments in the deepest horizons. Agricultural management decision-making in salinization-prone environments requires efficient soil salinity monitoring methods. This is the case in the B-XII irrigation district in SW Spain, a heavy clay reclaimed marsh area where a shallow saline water table and intensively irrigated agriculture create a fragile balance between salt accumulation and leaching in the root zone, which might be disrupted by the introduction of new crops and increasing climate variability. We evaluated the potential of electromagnetic induction (EMI) tomography for field-scale soil salinity assessment in this hyper-conductive environment, using EMI and limited analytical soil data measured in 2017 and 2020 under a processing tomato–cotton–sugar beet crop rotation. Salinity effects on crop development were assessed by comparing Sentinel 2 NDVI imagery with inverted depth-specific electrical conductivity (EC). Average apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) for the 1-m depth signal was 20% smaller in 2020 than in 2017, although the spatial ECa pattern was similar for both years. Inverted depth-specific EC showed a strong correlation (R ≈ 0.90) with saturated paste extract EC (ECe), [Na+] and sodium absorption ratio (SAR), resulting in linear calibration equations with R2 ≈ 0.8 for both years and leave-one-out cross validation Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency Coefficient, ranging from 0.57 to 0.74. Overall, the chemical parameter estimation improved with depth and soil wetness (2017), yielding 0.83 < R <0.98 at 0.9 m. The observed spatial EC distributions showed a steadily increasing inverse correlation with NDVI during the growing season, particularly for processing tomato and cotton, reaching R values of −0.71 and −0.85, respectively. These results confirm the potential of EMI tomography for mapping and monitoring soil salinity in the B-XII irrigation district, while it allows, in combination with NDVI imagery, a detailed spatial assessment of soil salinity impacts on crop development throughout the growing season. Contrary to the popular belief among farmers in the area, and despite non-saline topsoil conditions, spatial EC and subsoil salinity patterns were found to affect crop development negatively in the studied field. Vertisols are well suited for rainfed agriculture in water-limited environments as a result of their unique water transfer and retention characteristics. Despite their importance, the agro-hydrological behavior of these soils under seasonally dry climates is not yet fully understood. We collected water retention data for a Vertisol, measured from saturation to oven dryness on 27 undisturbed topsoil (0-0.05 m) samples from an experimental field in south-central Spain and related this information to the occurrence of field-observed preferential soil moisture states. A continuous function was fitted to the mean gravimetric water retention data, Θ, consisting of the sum of a double exponential model and the Groenevelt and Grant model. An inflection point at pressure head ∣h∣ = 1.1 × 105 cm, Θ = 0.12 kg kg-1, and an equivalent pore radius, δ = 14 nm, was interpreted as the boundary between the clay inter- and intra-aggregate pore spaces, corresponding with the transition from the intermediate to the dry field soil moisture state. The mode of the textural pore space (∣h∣ = 7.3 × 103 cm, Θ = 0.21 kg kg-1, and δ = 200 nm) matched the transition from the wet to the intermediate field soil moisture state. We related these characteristics of the soil water retention curve with the spatiotemporal soil moisture dynamics and patterns observed in the field, characterized by fast transitions between preferential soil moisture states. This paper describes a method to design air quality monitoring networks for nitrogen dioxide and ozone and its application in Granada, a city located in Andalusia, southern Spain. The city has a population of 236,988 inhabitants, and traffic is its main source of air pollution. Sampling campaigns with passive diffusion samplers at 88 sites were carried out to obtain information on the pollution distribution in Granada. The average concentrations found for NO2 and O3 were 36.5 μg/m3 and 51.6 μg/m3, respectively. Maximum values of up to 57.1 μg/m3 NO2 were found in Granada city center and O3 reached 77.2 μg/m3 downwind from the emission source. After spatial interpolation of the obtained values with Geographical Information Systems, a selection of the best locations for the monitoring stations was made, in line with the macro- and microscale siting requirements of the European Directive 2008/50/EC on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe. Another sampling campaign with diffusive samplers was carried out in 2007 to determine if the locations of the air quality assessment stations were still representative for their zone. Knowledge of the spatial and temporal distribution of reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0) is of interest for regional water resources management, especially in areas of the world where fine-tuning of agricultural water demands over large areas is required. This study provides a strategy for mapping ET0 in regions with low meteorological data availability. For Andalusia, Spain, it involves estimating ET0 from temperature data using a locally calibrated version of the Hargreaves equation and the application of geostatistical interpolation techniques that take into account elevation as secondary information. Average annual ET0 at 191 observatories (with elevation between 0 and 1260 m) ranged from 954 to 1460 mm, with an average of 1283 mm, a standard deviation of 99 mm, and a correlation coefficient with elevation of -0.86. Simple kriging with varying local means (SKlm) and kriging with an external drift (KED)—two methods that take into account elevation as secondary information—increased spatial model efficiency by 30% as compared to ordinary kriging. SKlm was used for mapping ET0 since it better reproduced the descriptive statistics of the point data and yielded slightly smaller root-mean-squared estimation errors than KED. The spatial correlation of annual and monthly ET0 was well structured and anisotropic. Short-range variability, for separation distances up to 20–40 km, showed a strong linear increase with distance while long-range variability, up to 130–250 km, increased more gently with distance. The results of this structural analysis are relevant for the spatial optimization of a recently installed automated ET0 observation network, while obtained maps constitute a valuable tool for regional water resources evaluation, planning, and management and contribute to optimizing water use in local irrigated agriculture. The bursting of the mining dam of Aznalcollar (Seville, Spain) triggered an increase in the concentration of heavy metals in the soils of the river Guadiamar valley as a result of the leaching of the pyritic sludge deposited on them. After the cleaning operations which included, as well as mechanical clearing, the addition of different amendments, some areas with residual sludge remained, from which some heavy metals are being mobilized by the cyclical recharge and discharge processes of water in the profiles. This paper analyzes the effect of the soil recovery operations and the climatology on the concentration of metals and their distribution in the soil profile in an area affected by the toxic spill. Fourteen points have been selected in a plot in which acidity persists, there is no vegetation, and residual sludge stains can be seen at a glance. The temporal and spatial evolution of the extractable metals: Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn, the pH and the oxidable fraction has been measured in-depth. The results obtained up to now indicate a leaching of the pollutant towards deeper horizons, finding, at a depth of 757 cm, pH values of 3. 5 and very high Fe and Mn concentrations available, especially in the profiles with large sized pores, with a big fraction of sand. On the surface, seasonally, there are low pH values of around 2. 5 and extractable Fe contents of over 4000 ppm, which might have an influence on the quality of surface runoff or underground water. Summary The application of simple empirical equations for estimating reference evapotranspiration (ET o ) is the only alternative in many cases to robust approaches with high input requirements, especially at the local scale. In particular, temperature-based approaches present a high potential applicability, among others, because temperature might explain a high amount of ET o variability, and also because it can be measured easily and is one of the most available climatic inputs. One of the most well-known temperature-based approaches, the Hargreaves (HG) equation, requires a preliminary local calibration that is usually performed through an adjustment of the HG coefficient (AHC). Nevertheless, these calibrations are site-specific, and cannot be extrapolated to other locations. So, they become useless in many situations, because they are derived from already available benchmarks based on more robust methods, which will be applied in practice. Therefore, the development of accurate equations for estimating AHC at local scale becomes a relevant task. This paper analyses the performance of calibrated and non-calibrated HG equations at 30 stations in Eastern Spain at daily, weekly, fortnightly and monthly scales. Moreover, multiple linear regression was applied for estimating AHC based on different inputs, and the resulting equations yielded higher performance accuracy than the non-calibrated HG estimates. The approach relying on the ratio mean temperature to temperature range did not provide suitable AHC estimations, and was highly improved by splitting it into two independent predictors. Temperature-based equations were improved by incorporating geographical inputs. Finally, the model relying on temperature and geographic inputs was further improved by incorporating wind speed, even just with simple qualitative information about wind category (e.g. poorly vs. highly windy). The accuracy of the calibrated and non-calibrated HG estimates increased for longer time steps (daily < weekly < fortnightly < monthly), although with a decreasing accuracy improvement rate. The variability of goodness-of-fit between AHC models was translated into lower variability of accuracy between the corresponding HG calibrated ET o estimates, because a single AHC was applied per station. Abstract: The assessment of air quality is necessary in order to control and reduce pollution to levels which minimise harmful effects on human health and the environment. This paper describes a method to design air quality monitoring networks for nitrogen dioxide and ozone and its application in Jaen (southern Spain). A fibre-glass filter impregnated with triethanolamine was used in diffusive sampling badges for NO2 determination. For O3 analysis, sodium nitrite was selected and nitrate, a product of the reaction of ozone and nitrite, was used to assess the ozone concentrations. Sampling campaigns with passive diffusion samplers at 62 sites were then carried out to obtain information on the pollution emissions in Jaen. The sampling campaigns in 2001–2002 revealed an average concentration of 10.4μg/m3 NO2 with maximum values up to 22.5μg/m3 in Jaen City centre. The average ozone concentrations were recorded downwind from the emission source, reaching 96.2μg/m3; the average ozone value in Jaen was 72.0μg/m3. After spatial interpolation of the obtained values with Geographical Information Systems, a selection of the best locations for the monitoring stations was made, in line with the macro- and microscale siting requirements of the European Directive 2008/50/EC on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe. Abstract: Air monitoring networks are necessary to assess air quality in order to reduce pollution to levels which minimise harmful effects on human health and the environment. This paper describes a method to design air quality monitoring networks for nitrogen dioxide and ozone and its application in Cordova, Andalusia, southern Spain. The city has a population of 325,453 inhabitants and traffic is its main source of air pollution. The first step of this method made it possible to determine from historical data that two control stations for NO2 and one control stations for O3 are necessary according to the legislation. Sampling campaigns with passive diffusion samplers at 81 sites were then carried out to obtain information on the pollution distribution in Cordova. The sampling campaigns in 2001–2002 revealed an average concentration of 19.5μg/m3 for NO2 with maximum values up to 28.6μg/m3 in Cordova city centre. The average ozone concentrations were recorded downwind from the emission source, reaching 91.8μg/m3; the average ozone value in Cordova was 65.3μg/m3. After spatial interpolation of the obtained values with Geographical Information Systems, a selection of the best locations for the monitoring stations was made, in line with the macro- and microscale siting requirements of the European Directive 2008/50/EC on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe. Abstract: Air monitoring networks are necessary to assess air quality in order to reduce pollution to levels which minimize harmful effects on human health and the environment. This paper describes a method to design or optimize air quality monitoring networks for nitrogen dioxide and ozone and its application in Malaga, a medium large city located in Andalusia, southern Spain, with traffic being the main source of air pollution. The completion of this method revealed that the old assessment network in Malaga was badly designed and made it possible to determine that one traffic-orientated and one background control station were necessary for NO2 assessment in Malaga, as well as two control stations for O3. First the number of stations necessary is obtained from historical data. Sampling campaigns with passive diffusion samplers at 74 sites were then carried out to obtain information on the pollution distribution in Malaga. The average concentrations found for NO2 and O3 were 22.8μg/m3 and 64.3μg/m3 respectively. Maximum values of up to 42.2μg/m3 NO2 were found in Malaga city centre and O3 reached 91.5μg/m3 downwind from the emission source. After spatial interpolation of the obtained values with Geographical Information Systems, a selection of the best locations for the monitoring stations was made, in line with the macro- and microscale siting requirements of the European Directive 2008/50/EC on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe. Abstract: Long-term field experiments can provide relevant information regarding soil organic carbon sequestration under different soil tillage systems. Especially, conservation tillage (CT) has been proved to be a practice that highly contributes to improve soil quality. For that reason, the study of soil quality indicators, such as organic fractions, are useful tools to assess changes caused by different soil tillage systems in long-term field experiments. We evaluated long-term effects of conservation tillage on soil carbon fractions and biological properties in a sandy clay loam Entisol (soil A) and in a clay Vertisol (soil B) located in semi-arid SW Spain. Cereal–sunflower–legume rotations under rainfed conditions were used in both soils in which conservation tillage (CT) was compared to traditional tillage (TT). Soil samples were collected at three depths (0–5, 5–10 and 10–20cm) four months after sowing a pea crop (Pisum arvense L.) in the Entisol and a wheat crop (Triticum aestivum L.) in the Vertisol. Labile fractions of the total organic carbon (TOC) were determined as active carbon (AC) and water soluble carbon (WSC). Biological status was evaluated using soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and enzymatic activities [dehydrogenase activity (DHA), o-diphenol oxidase activity (Dphox), and β-glucosidase activity (β-glu)]. As a rule, the contents of AC, WSC, MBC, β-glu and Dphox in soil A and contents of TOC, AC and DHA in soil B were higher in CT than in TT, at the 0–5cm depth. In both soils, the studied parameters decreased with depth under both tillage treatments (TT and CT). Values of AC, TOC, MBC and β-glu were positively correlated with each other (p <0.05) in both soils. The principal component analysis (PCA) showed that two principal components explained 44.17% and 21.2% of the total variability in the Entisol and 47.3% and 19.3% in Vertisol. The first principal component was influenced mostly by AC and β-glucosidase in the Entisol, while it was influenced by DHA, MBC and AC in Vertisol. Discriminant analysis (DA) showed as discriminant function was strongly correlated with MBC, AC and Dphox in soil A and with TOC, AC and WSC in soil B. From both analyses (PCA and DA) in this study, AC content was the most sensitive and consistent indicator for assessing the impact of different soil managements on soil quality in our two types of soil. Long-term conservation tillage in dryland farming systems improved the quality of both soils, especially at the surface, by enhancing soil organic carbon and biological status.
