UNESCO-designated geoparks, intended for conservation, seek to drive economic development via geological heritage education and tourism. Since 2018, within the framework of the European project Atlantic Geoparks (Interreg Atlantic area program), the Valleys of Cantabria project has been promoted to declare a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) in the Cantabria region (northern Spain). The Valles de Cantabria proposal, aligning with UNESCO objectives, evaluates the region's geopark potential, emphasizing sustainable development and societal education. Covering 600 km
2 in eastern Cantabria, the territory involves 19 municipalities and has a population of 60,600. The geological context, ranging from the Triassic to the Quaternary periods, reflects the complex evolution of this territory, which has been influenced by tectonic forces, geomorphological processes, and sea-level changes. Detailed reviews and fieldwork performed by experts, including university researchers, have identified 66 sites of geological interest (SGI). The geosites, which have different geological–geomorphological significances, have been assessed according to their scientific value (including educational importance), potential of use (mainly geotouristic use), and vulnerability or risk of degradation. The geological heritage is directly related to the high biodiversity of the area. The challenges of this territory, such as depopulation and the low income of the inhabitants, can be improved with the declaration of a geopark, which would help to create new job opportunities related to geotourism and sustainable development. UNESCO recognition could catalyse scientific research, address socioeconomic challenges, and foster rural revitalization, strengthening the symbiotic relationship between geoconservation and local economic growth. Collaboration with other Atlantic geoparks has enabled the exchange of experiences that will hopefully deepen in the future. Consequently, the aim of this work is to explore the potential of this territory in terms of high-quality geological features and biological and cultural heritage, as well as to evaluate the socioeconomic context that makes the territory potentially suitable for promoting a UGGp. This study aims to identify the use of Augmented Reality technology and the trend of using AR in tourism with time limitation from 2013 until 2022. It also aims to determine the valuable contributions of documents, sources, authors, countries, and institutions worldwide in tourism. The qualitative method using bibliometric analysis is suitable for this study because it can provide an overview and classify. Data was collected from the Scopus database and then analyzed using VOSviewer software. The results show that (1) museum, (2) sustainable tourism, and (3) heritage tourism are the keywords most often used in research. The potential research of AR in tourism is directed at the development of underwater tourism, the application of virtual museums, ecotourism, culture heritage tourism, digital heritage and destination image. Sustainability (Switzerland), Current Issues in Tourism, and The International Journal of Human-Computer are the journals with the most publications. Tom Dieck M. C.M.C, Jung T, and Chung N are authors with a high degree of collaboration with other authors. United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy became the countries with the highest publications. Research trends and advances in augmented reality in tourism have been discussed in more detail in this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the middle of the last century, the Spanish tourism sector has experienced significant growth, which was interrupted by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation had a considerable impact on Spain, as the country is a leading world tourism destination and relies heavily on this sector in its economy, making it vulnerable when demand for tourism services declines. The tourism model in Spain is not homogeneous, and the Mediterranean coastal regions and island areas are highly dependent on tourism as a main source of economic income and were particularly affected by the consequences of the pandemic. This study analyzes the impact of the pandemic on the tourism sector in each Spanish autonomous community, focusing on tourism demand through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The results reveal the disparity and vulnerability of Spanish regions to the tourism crisis. The most tourist-dependent areas dependent on international tourism have experienced a decline due to restrictions and a fall in demand. On the other hand, rural regions that depend mainly on national tourism have suffered fewer effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In light of the market uncertainty for hospitality and tourism companies caused by COVID-19, which even led to the legal closure of borders, a study model is proposed. Our model considers market uncertainty as a moderator of the principles of business management. This moderator leads to a sustainable competitive advantage through organizational values, participative leadership, market orientation and innovative intensity. The viability of the proposed model has been analyzed with a mixed methodology using the Smart-PLS tool, on the one hand, and two fsQCA-based samples of hospitality and tourism companies located in Spain and South Korea, on the other hand. The results show the relevance of participative leadership supported by organizational values in obtaining a sustainable competitive advantage. This will help the tourism sector to adapt to future health pandemics. Market uncertainty has not affected participative leadership in achieving this sustainable competitive advantage. Tourism has an enormous capacity to generate economic growth and boost the labor market, but contributing to sustainable development is one of the main challenges today. The slow philosophy approach advocates slow tourism as a responsible and sustainable way of life and consumption, and the Spanish Cittaslow network has adopted this approach. The objective of this research is to analyze progress in compliance with the principles of slow tourism in the Spanish Cittaslow network. The applied methodology consists of a comparative analysis of the tourism offerings communicated on the official websites of the Spanish Cittaslow municipalities, in light of slow tourism principles. The findings show that the 12 municipalities that have registered in the Citta Slow network in Spain are relevant in terms of historical heritage and natural resources, but only 30% take advantage of the uniqueness of being a Cittaslow to systematically promote their tourism. Publication of its Cittaslow indicators could accelerate progress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents the results of the application of the automatic translator DeepL to the field of gastronomy and wine tourism. In today's world, where it is necessary to translate a large number of text in an ever shorter time, translations engines are a very useful tool that is increasingly used by professionals in the sector and by people in their daily lives. However, one of the limitations usually attributed to these engines is that they do not always achieve a valid translation of cultural elements or different linguistic connotations, especially when it comes to certain linguistic combinations. Through some examples taken from the official tourism portal of Spain, the performance of the DeepL engine, which is available on the market in its free version, is observed and evaluated. For our analysis we focus on the specific field of food and wine tourism and on the Spanish-Italian language combination, and we compare the Italian translation of some fragments published on the web with the translation made with DeepL, to highlight the differences and eventual inaccuracies after a human evaluation process. Agriculture is an important economic activity across much of the Western world. Beyond its productive purpose, we can also identify a cultural function that is expressed in the existence of a rich heritage associated with the interactions between nature and humans over time. This heritage includes tangible and intangible assets, the latter including traditional knowledge, history, knowledge of natural cycles, and the identification of the local population with its landscapes; in short, resources are understood as a legacy that needs to be reappraised and passed on to future generations. Saffron cultivation is an example of an agricultural landscape with significant intangible heritage values associated with the know-how and the family-run nature of the farms. The resources linked to saffron cultivation in the region of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain) are described in this paper, with an emphasis on how local communities perceive them as an integral part of their geographical identity. The results, following in-depth interviews with different local actors, demonstrate the potential for the intangible values associated with saffron to drive local development in many rural areas once they have been reappraised and classified as assets for attracting tourism. MEDICAL tourism , *TOURIST attractions , *INTERNATIONAL tourism , *TOURISM , *HUMAN beings , *TOURISM websites , *EMPLOYEE assistance programs - Abstract
Since ancient history, human beings have traveled to other places in search of healing remedies to improve their health or find a cure for their disease. In the last decades, the number of people traveling in search of medical and wellness treatments and interventions has grown significantly, making health tourism an important sector of the global economy. Therefore, health tourism, due to its potential, represents a great opportunity for business, wealth, and employment development. Spain, thanks to its geographical location and a series of environmental, climatic, cultural and lifestyle characteristics, has become the second most visited country by tourists. Its wide range of health services and its availability of resources have made it one of the main tourist destinations for medical and/or wellness reasons. Despite the innumerable benefits of international health tourism, the development of this tourism typology can also have adverse effects. These disadvantages must be overcome through healthcare strategies - by the responsible governments and institutions - to guarantee and accredit the veracity and quality of these services in the visited countries. This would give greater safety and security to health tourists without affecting access and health care for residents in the receiving country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the past decades, studies have paid a growing attention to the relationships between celebrities and tourism because of their influence on travel behaviours. Based on the literature of celebrity-induced film tourism, chefs have emerged as a source of celebrity-induced food tourism which awards value to food as art. This exploratory research note is focused on the culinary empire of Karlos Arguiñano in Zarautz (Basque Country, Spain) and argues that celebrity chefs are powerful cultural and social agents who have developed their own brands and influence on food consumption. This research innovatively illustrates the potential of celebrity chefs for food tourism management and marketing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Weather conditions are important determinants of tourism demand. After reviewing the main contributions of previous research on the role of climatic variables in tourism demand functions, we explore different modelling alternatives to introduce temperature and rainfall in a gravity model. The dataset used comprises interregional tourism flows by Spanish residents from 2011 to 2015. We first estimate a benchmark model with both temperature and rainfall at the destination expressed in levels, and then consider some extensions to this model. In particular, special attention is paid to analyzing whether the sensitivity that tourists may have to weather factors can change across seasons. Other modelling issues examined include the relationship between climatic variables at the destination and at home, the influence of weather in previous periods (lagged values of temperature and rain), the variability of the weather variables (captured by the standard deviation of these variables), or whether the effect of temperature varies with the climatic characteristics of the region. Our empirical results confirm that spring and summer tourism in Spain is more sensitive to weather conditions, that the number of domestic overnight stays in Spain is strongly influenced by changes in the difference in temperature between tourists' home and destination regions, that the estimated parameters of lagged weather variables are higher than those corresponding to the travelling months, that temperature variability in the destination region reduces tourism demand, and that the effect of temperature on destination choice for residents in moderate-climate regions is lower than for residents in other types of regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tourism has been one of the sectors most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the side effects of the pandemic is the demand for safe and quiet spaces, giving rise to the search for a new lifestyle, "slow living", which could represent an opportunity for cultural tourism. In this context, the main objective of this article is twofold: (i) to establish the relevance of cultural tourism for residents in Spain for the autonomous communities along the French Way of Saint James and (ii) to determine their behaviour on their institutional tourism promotion websites. For our analysis, we use equality of means tests and ANOVA (for data from 2002–2020), as well as measures of positioning, engagement, origin of the audience and access devices (for data from 2020–2021). The main conclusion is that the Way of St. James does not act as a driving force for cultural tourism, even though the websites of tourism promotion organisations have experienced a remarkable growth in their use. This article develops an original relation of cultural tourism through an analysis of the French Way of St. James in Spain and the web positioning of official tourism promotion organisations before and during COVID-19. Nowadays, tourism plays a very important role in the growth of the economy, and in particular, in the province of Burgos the tourism sector is an important source of economic and social development. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the competitive advantages of this area of northern Spain by creating a responsible and sustainable tourism model that aims to reach the 17 SDGs. This study analyses the evolution of tourist supply and demand, comparing it with data from Castilla y León, Spain and five other provinces in Spain, as well as examining the tourist's profile and perception. The findings show that the increase in the number of hotel establishments was greater than that at national and regional level, but the growth of the supply of rural tourism accommodation establishments has stagnated in the last two years. The number of passengers in Burgos has been growing since 2012, with a slight decrease in 2018, in contrast the number of travellers in rural accommodation establishments has increased substantially since 2015. The visits are characterized by being short and with few expenses, focused mainly on the restoration. The degree of overall satisfaction and loyalty continues to be high. Finally, all services related to catering, infrastructures, information points and complementary activities to historical tourism should be improved to maximize tourist satisfaction and loyalty. REAL estate agents , *REAL estate bubbles , *SOCIAL services , *SERVICE departments , *TOURISM websites - Abstract
In 2008, when real estate prices in Spain fell rapidly (real estate bubble), an economic crisis was triggered that led to a fast increase in unemployment and evictions. We build on Harvey's idea of accumulation by dispossession and examine the urban distribution of evictions that took place between 2008 and 2016 in the inner-city area of Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife, Canary Islands). For this purpose, we analyse a database and conduct guideline interviews with a member of the city's social services department and two local real estate agents. The study shows that the Spanish real estate crisis has exacerbated socio-spatial disparities in the city of Puerto de la Cruz and that the number of dispossessions in the years 2008 to 2016, compared with the period of 1995 to 2007, rose substantially. Inner-city areas with high numbers of tourists and tourism infrastructure were particularly affected. Our analysis offers different aspects which allow a comparison with the growing number of case studies in Spain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For this article we carry out an investigation that allows us to find out if the names of the types of tourism are the same in the countries that use Spanish as their official language. For this end, as a first step, we extract--with the Sketch Engine program--the types of tourism that appear in the latest versions of the official tourism guides of Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, as well as in two tourism guides of the World Tourism Organization. Then, in order to examine if the content in types of tourism of these official guides is complete or not, we include other types of tourism compiled in research articles referred to in this article. Finally, in order to know the validity and common use or not of the 98 types of tourism that are part of this analysis, for all of them, we carry out a textual search in referential newspapers and on specialized websites about tourism concerning these five countries. The events designed and disseminated through social networks and from the perspective of transmedia storytelling are integrated into territorial marketing strategies as resources that reinforce the value of destinations. This type of events is key element in the construction of the World Heritage Sites (Unesco) brands. The new role of tourists as proactive users and the engagement generated towards the destination management organization are decisive elements for the online reputation management of territories. The monitoring of events let us evaluate the participation and interaction of tourist users in platforms 2.0. The aim of this research is to analyze the engagement (global, positive and negative) of events 2.0 integrated into the marketing strategy of the 40 World Cultural Heritage Sites in Spain on Facebook and Twitter. These social networks are the most frequently used in marketing strategies of destination marketing organizations. An exploratory study of events integrated in digital tourism marketing strategy of the World Cultural Heritage Sites is carried out through content analysis. Results show that there are substantial differences in the management of events 2.0. The different levels of interaction (reactions, sharing and comments) allow the destination marketing organizations (DMOs) to evaluate the rate of engagement. This latter parameter can be used as a reference for the efficient design of future events linked to the 2.0 promotion of cultural destinations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cultural tourism has really taken off in the last decade touristic destinies are now part of a highly competitive market. The heritage has turned into an economic asset. Generalization of its trading is now in place through various touristic products. This is the case of cultural events focusing tourism. Among them stand out hallmark events. These are exceptional events. They take place in order to improve the attractiveness and cost effectiveness of a touristic destination. These occurrences are an opportunity to organize them through remembrance services. In this article we go through hallmark events in main cultural touristic destinies. That's the reason why we carry out a study in order to analyze later events after Greco's death in the city of Toledo, the IV centenary of his death. The approach used consists of a literary revision, direct observation analyze sources of information and a poll amongst visitors and inhabitants. The results will show the great economic and touristic scope of the event. However among visitors, Greco's year was a secondary reason to attend the venue. In the host community 40% of the inhabitants didn't take part in the event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the 90s, Internet appeared in the Spanish tourist industry, fact that preoccupied most companies and business in it; specially travel agencies, which were at that moment overcoming a difficult situation due to the economic crisis, the saturation of the industry and the reduction of their commissions. Time has demonstrated that Internet is just a tool that, when properly used, can enhance the efficiency and benefits of the tourist companies. This last decade we have witnessed the digital transformation of this sector and, specifically, of the distribution chain. Traditional tourist intermediaries have adapted to this new era, incorporating technology to their everyday life when commercializing their products and services. At the same time, new agents have appeared online, that make us ask ourselves if they can be considered as intermediaries or not. The main goal of this paper is to analize the evolution of the intermediation activity since the 90s, with special attention to the birth of new business models in this area. The results will help us establish an updated classification of tourist intermediaries and their role in the tourism system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Biodiversity Foundation has launched the BIODIVERSIA platform as an interactive inventory of Spain's natural heritage and biodiversity. The platform, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, allows users to access official information generated by the Spanish Inventory of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity. Additionally, the platform includes a mapping server that provides access to information from the Ministry's Nature Database and offers featured news, an electronic resource library, a multimedia space, and working groups related to the inventory. In this paper we present the problem of aggregating heterogeneous data from various websites with opinions about high end hotels into a database. We present the fuzzy model based on the semantic translation as a tool to obtain a linguistic summarization. The characteristics of this model (necessary to solve the problem) are not together on any of the existing linguistic models: the management of the input heterogeneous data (natural language included); the procurement of linguistic results with high precision and good interpretability; and the use of unbalanced linguistic term sets described by trapezoidal membership functions for defining the initial linguistic terms. We applied it to aggregate data from certain high end hotels websites and we show a case study using the high end hotels located in Granada (Spain) from such websites during a year. With this aggregated information, a data analyst can make several analyses with the benefit of easy linguistic interpretability and a high precision. The solution proposed here can be used to similar aggregation problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the emergence of a series of problems in the tourism sustainable development, such as environmental pollution, landscape destruction, ecological imbalance, and decreased satisfaction of tourists and residents, it is very urgent to research the tourism carrying capacity. Numerous studies have investigated the tourism carrying capacity but none of them provides a comprehensive analysis of the whole field. The purpose of this study was to identify the hot topics, knowledge gaps and future research directions of the tourism carrying capacity research. Based on the bibliometric records of Web of Science core collection database in 2001–2020, the CiteSpace software and the analysis methods of co-authorship analysis, co-citation analysis and co-occurrence analysis were combined to present a holistic review of the tourism carrying capacity research. The results showed that China, Spain and the United States were the major countries in the research of tourism carrying capacity. Five hot research topics were identified: 1) concept and connotation of tourism carrying capacity, 2) index system and performance model of tourism carrying capacity, 3) sustainable management and practical application, 4) social tourism carrying capacity, and 5) sustainable tourism and ecotourism carrying capacity. In addition, four knowledge gaps were identified, and future research directions for bridging these knowledge gaps were also proposed. This study benefits academics, industry practitioners and governments by providing a comprehension of status quo, hot research topics, knowledge gaps and future research directions in the domain of tourism carrying capacity. • A scientometric review of tourism carrying capacity was conducted. • 298 research outcomes of WoS core collection published in 2001–2020 were analyzed. • Both quantitative scientometric analysis and qualitative discussion were applied. • Hot research topics, knowledge gaps and future research directions were identified. This article compares two digital genres or cybergenres with the same institutional source: the Official Portal of Tourism in Spain, Spain.info and the Facebook profile See Spain through the pragmalinguistic strategies that both deploy in promoting the Spain Brand in the context of tourism 2.0. To this end, a theoretical framework to characterize genres is suggested, according to diverse parameters connected to the domain and to the communicative purpose, to the channel or medium, to the way the message is planned and to the textual structure. Besides, this proposal is based upon a series of principles such as variability or speech community membership and it takes into account specific aspects of digital texts like structure and hyperlinks, contents updating and the possibility of users' interaction.
