BACKGROUND The study of almond fat stability is essential from a quality control perspective meanly because, in most of the cases, almonds are sold skinned and thermally treated. In this work an alternative method to Rancimat test based on attenuated total reflectance‐Fourier‐transform infrared (ATR‐FTIR) spectrometry was adapted for checking the induced degradation at 75 °C of seven almond oil cultivars, three of the top Californian producing varieties, and, four traditional cultivars harvested in Spain. RESULTS: The thermal oil degradation evolution was followed by measuring the changes in the absorbance of the selected FTIR spectra bands (3470, 3006, 1730, 1630, 988 and 970 cm−1). A first‐order kinetic behaviour was observed, after an induction time in all bands. CONCLUSIONS: Kinetic coefficients and induction times were easily obtained as the absorbance values (from difference spectra) fitted to pseudo‐first‐order kinetics after the induction time. Principal component analysis was applied to the kinetic parameters to visualize which variables could be useful to classify the almond cultivars based on their resistance to thermal oxidation processes. It was found that selecting only the induction times corresponding to the bands 3470, 3006, 1630 and 970 cm−1 a separate classification of the Californian cultivars from the Spanish ones was possible. Finally, a linear discriminant analysis was assayed using only the four induction times previously selected. Validated classification and correct in 100% of the cases was obtained for all the samples based on their Spanish or Californian origin. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agricultural selection programmes are, today, working hard to obtain novel raspberry cultivars with higher nutritional and commercial quality. One of those cultivars is "Adelita". This study aims to provide novel tools for raspberry cultivar identification—more specifically, the differentiation of "Adelita" from other raspberry cultivars. To perform this study, five "Adelita" samples were analysed—four cultivated in Spain and one, in Morocco—and they were compared to seven samples from six raspberry cultivars ("P04", "Lupita", "Enrosadira", "P10", "Quanza" and "Versalles"). The physical parameters (mass, length, equatorial diameter and firmness) combined with the Total Phenolic Content (TPC); the antioxidant capacity according to the antioxidant activity tested with the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) methods; and the main target volatile compounds were used as independent variables. Principal component and cluster analysis showed that the target volatiles and physical parameters together with the TPC and DPPH values could be useful to classify Adelita cultivars separately from the rest of the cultivars included in the work. Those results proved that the developed methodology could be proposed as a reliable approach for the identification of cultivar fraud in the supply chain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Study Objective: To compare the effects of ultrasound-guided aspiration and ethanol sclerotherapy with those of laparoscopic surgery on anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels and ovarian reserve in benign-appearing ovarian endometrioma., Design: A prospective, cohort pilot study., Setting: Multiple centers, Spain., Patients: Forty patients with a suspected ovarian endometrioma with a maximum diameter of 35-100 mm. Serum hormonal concentrations were analyzed in 26 of these women., Interventions: Two groups: one that received US-guided aspiration plus alcohol sclerotherapy (n = 16) and the other that underwent laparoscopic cystectomy (n = 10)., Measurements and Main Results: We studied serum hormonal concentrations (AMH, FSH and 17-β-estradiol) and antral follicle counts (AFC) in each patient at baseline, and after the procedures and pregnancies. No differences were found when comparing AMH and FSH concentrations before and after each procedure. 17-β-estradiol concentrations were significantly increased after alcohol sclerotherapy (p < 0.001). AFC recovery after 6 months seemed to be higher after sclerotherapy than after surgery. Introduction: Dyslipidemia, especially an increased LDL-cholesterol, has been shown to be one of the most important risk factors in the genesis of coronary involvement. The prevalence of dyslipidemias in Spain is high. The objective of this study is to assess the progress of dyslipidemic patients in our health center over a 6-year period, and see if there has been any improvement in its control after the presentation of the evaluation of the first 3 years, as well as an updated dyslipidemia protocol., Patients and Methods: Assessment Period 1 (2006-2008): 267 patients with dyslipidemia. Assessment Period 2 (2009-2011): 222 patients, excluding exitus and address changes., Variables: age, sex, personal history of CVD, vascular risk factors, lipids, drug treatment, risk levels, and percentages of CV control objectives., Results: Mean age was 66.2 years (SD 13.4), 66.3% women. Period 1-Period 2: Total cholesterol: 221.9-196.6 mg/dl (P=.000); LDL-cholesterol: 147.9-115.8 mg/dl (P=.000). In high risk patients, therapeutic targets: 14-50.5% (P=.024); medium risk: 35-68.1% (P=.038); low risk: 44-68.2% (P=NS). Pharmacotherapy 68-77% (P=.000). Changing treatment: 30-43% (P=.001). Adherence: 75-86% (P=.003). Untreated high risk: 15.4-16.3% (P=NS)., Conclusions: There was a significant improvement in Period 2, especially in high-risk patients, after presenting the results of the evaluation for Period 1 and with the updated dyslipidemia protocol. Background and Purpose: Diffuse gliomas are classified as grades II-IV on the basis of histologic features, with prognosis determined mainly by clinical factors and histologic grade supported by molecular markers. Our aim was to evaluate, in patients with diffuse gliomas, the relationship of relative CBV and ADC values to overall survival. In addition, we also propose a prognostic model based on preoperative MR imaging findings that predicts survival independent of histopathology., Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the preoperative diffusion and perfusion MR imaging in 126 histologically confirmed diffuse gliomas. Median relative CBV and ADC values were selected for quantitative analysis. Survival univariate analysis was made by constructing survival curves by using the Kaplan-Meier method and comparing subgroups by log-rank probability tests. A Cox regression model was made for multivariate analysis., Results: The study included 126 diffuse gliomas (median follow-up of 14.5 months). ADC and relative CBV values had a significant influence on overall survival. Median overall survival for patients with ADC < 0.799 × 10(-3) mm(2)/s was <1 year. Multivariate analysis revealed that patient age, relative CBV, and ADC values were associated with survival independent of pathology. The preoperative model provides greater ability to predict survival than that obtained by histologic grade alone., Conclusions: ADC values had a better correlation with overall survival than relative CBV values. A preoperative prognostic model based on patient age, relative CBV, and ADC values predicted overall survival of patients with diffuse gliomas independent of pathology. Background and Purpose: Traumatic brain injuries represent an important cause of death for young people. The main objectives of this work are to correlate brain stem injuries detected at MR imaging with outcome at 6 months in patients with severe TBI, and to determine which MR imaging findings could be related to a worse prognosis., Materials and Methods: One hundred and eight patients with severe TBI were studied by MR imaging in the first 30 days after trauma. Brain stem injury was categorized as anterior or posterior, hemorrhagic or nonhemorrhagic, and unilateral or bilateral. Outcome measures were GOSE and Barthel Index 6 months postinjury. The relationship between MR imaging findings of brain stem injuries, outcome, and disability was explored by univariate analysis. Prognostic capability of MR imaging findings was also explored by calculation of sensitivity, specificity, and area under the ROC curve for poor and good outcome., Results: Brain stem lesions were detected in 51 patients, of whom 66% showed a poor outcome, as expressed by the GOSE scale. Bilateral involvement was strongly associated with poor outcome (P < .05). Posterior location showed the best discriminatory capability in terms of outcome (OR 6.8, P < .05) and disability (OR 4.8, P < .01). The addition of nonhemorrhagic and anterior lesions or unilateral injuries showed the highest odds and best discriminatory capacity for good outcome., Conclusions: The prognosis worsens in direct relationship to the extent of traumatic injury. Posterior and bilateral brain stem injuries detected at MR imaging are poor prognostic signs. Nonhemorrhagic injuries showed the highest positive predictive value for good outcome.

Background: Iodine is an essential trace element implicated in synthesis of thyroid hormones. Iodine requirements vary throughout life. This iodine requirement is increased during pregnancy and breastfeeding. In a previous study carried out by our group in 2008, we detected an iodine-deficient area in the province of Huelva, specially in district Sierra de Huelva-Andévalo by means of neonatal TSH determinations., Objective: To reinforce the iodine supplementation campaign and its impact on their newborns in order to assess nutrition iodine status in pregnant women using questionnaire and ioduria determination., Material and Methods: This study has been jointly carried out by Congenital Hypothyroidism Unit of the Clinical Biochemistry Department of the Virgen Macarena University Hospital (Seville) and the Gynecology and Clinical Analysis Unit of the Río Tinto Hospital (Huelva) during two years. We studied 313 pregnant women. All of them filled out a personal questionnaire to know the iodine nutritional status in their area. Ioduria was determinated by high-resolution liquid chromatography. Data from pregnant women and results of the studied variables were analyzed with SPSS v13.0., Conclusions: Pregnant women from the sanitary district Sierra de Huelva-Andévalo present a median for ioduria which corresponds to an insufficient iodine intake according to the WHO classification. The questionnaires suggest that this iodine deficiency is consequence of an insufficient iodine intake and a low adherence to the treatment.

Objectives: To compare nutritional state of patients referred from nursing homes (NH) and patients coming from their own home., Patients and Methods: Several variables were recorded from patients being admitted to an internal medicine ward for a month. Sixty-six patients were included (36 women and 30 men). The mean age of studied patients was 75.7 +/- 14.4 years., Results: Patients referred from NH had a tricipital skin fold (11.7 +/- 7.5 mm) thinner than patients coming from their home (14.4 +/- 6.5 mm, p = 0.08). Plasma albumin levels were lower in patients with advanced cancer (3 +/- 0.6 g/dl) than in remainder patients (3.2 +/- 0.6 g/dl, p > 0.05). Patients being fed by nasogastric tube had lower plasma levels (2.6 +/- 0.5) than any other patients (3.3 +/- 0.6, p = 0.03). In patients coming from their own home, febrile diseases were associated with a thinner tricipital skin fold and lower plasmatic albumin., Conclusions: Patients referred from NH and patients being fed by nasogastric tube presented a deficient protein-energy nutritional state. Febrile diseases were associated with a deficient nutritional state in patients coming from their own home.
