The study is focused on the changes in the consumption of electronic information by the academic communities of five Spanish universities through the contents distributed by four widely used suppliers, from the very first subscription to them down to 2010. Similarly, the preferences of these institutions for titles distributed by the suppliers under consideration and their links to various different academic fields were investigated. From 24% to 30% of the overall total of downloads came from the top 25 favourite titles of the respective academic communities. This fact points to a need to go beyond the Big Deal model and strive for greater flexibility in subscriptions to resources, so as to have made-to-measure supplies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article presents the report of the secretary for the Econometric Society Annual Reports in January 2010 in Barcelona, Spain. It illustrates the evolution of membership of the Society and of the number of institutional subscribers. It reflects on the report written by members wherein three reasons for creating new journals are stated, the agreement of the executive committee in 2007 and their formal proposal in 2008 which was approved by the Council in January 2009. It provides an overview of the two new journals, namely "Quantitative Economics" and "Theoretical Economics", that the Society planned to publish in 2010. It offers information about the North American Winter Meetings and the upcoming 2010 World Congress on August 17-21 in Shanghai International Convention Center, China.

Policies on institutional subscription to major international publishing platforms are discussed. It seems a contradiction, but in Spain the expansion of open access is consolidating and increasing its foreign economic dependence. The cost of access to specific articles in various publications is reviewed, and the need to negotiate better terms for pay-per-view systems is argued. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
