Dam removal is increasingly considered as a river restoration tool for impoundments that harm the environment or have exceeded their lifespan. However, few studies report the ecological consequences of large dam removal.We performed a multiple before‐after/control‐impact (mBACI) study to investigate the consequences of the decommissioning of a large dam (42 m high) on instream habitat and invertebrate communities in a temperate, forested catchment of northern Spain.Before decommissioning, lack of fine sediments and high concentrations of manganese and iron occurred below the dam but decreased downstream. Invertebrate taxa richness and diversity were reduced, and pollution‐sensitive taxa were missing just below the dam.The drawdown of the reservoir, the first step towards its decommissioning, mobilized stored sediments causing frequent turbidity peaks downstream, which nevertheless, caused no detrimental effects on macroinvertebrate communities. One year after drawdown, the communities downstream from the dam, as well as those in the newly formed stream in the area formerly impounded by the reservoir, became very similar to those in control reaches, showing a successful restoration project.Synthesis and applications. Dam decommissioning helps restore instream habitats and facilitates the recovery of invertebrate communities in a very short time frame if there are nearby sources of potential colonizers. Slow drawdown reduces the transport of the sediments accumulated in the reservoir and their potential downstream impacts, even more if prior to drawdown the reservoir is kept full for years to promote the deposition of sediments in marginal areas that will later be readily colonized by trees. Blowouts are integral features of coastal dune fields. Their presence enhances both geomorphological and ecological diversity and enables the movement of sand by wind. Their role as a 'transport corridor' may be, however, considered negative from a coastal management perspective in heavily touristic areas, where the existence of blowouts close to the foredune can enhance the loss of sediment from the beach. This paper investigated the relationship between airflow dynamics and patterns of sediment transport from the beach to established dunes through a trough blowout located on the foredune. Seven three-cup anemometers were used to measure wind speed and direction over a 24 h sampling period at a frequency of 1 min under onshore (parallel to the blowout axis) medium and high wind speeds (max of 17.9 ms−1). To measure sediment transport, a total of 12 vertical sand traps were located at three positions along the length of the deflation basin. The results indicated that small amounts of sediments went into the blowout from the beach and that the highest rates of sediment remobilization took place within the deflation basin. These results highlight two processes: (a) flow channelization induced by the blowout topography caused an increase in wind speed and sediment transport toward the depositional lobe, and (b) the presence of embryo dunes and herbaceous vegetation at the beach–blowout boundary effectively reduced the amount of sediment transport from the beach to the landform. Rivers are dynamic systems, with mobility due to their changing flows. Variations in flow give rise to floods, forming floodplains, whose human occupation depends on the probability of flooding; the reduction of floods favours human occupation. This study analyses the modification of the fluvial territory of the lower stretch of the Jarama River between 1956 and 2020, through orthophotographic analysis. The regulation of the basin by dams has led to the disappearance of floods, favouring human occupation of the fluvial territory. Concurrently, the length of the river channel has increased by 2.3% due to the excavation of some meanders, favoured by the modification of flows due to the discharge of wastewater treatment plants. As a consequence, the fluvial territory has increased by 0.88 km2 due to erosion, but at the same time has lost 14.36 km2 due to human occupation, with a net loss of 58.3% of the area. Most of the occupied fluvial territory has been used for agriculture, followed by grassland and mining, although much of the grasslands are former mining areas. The current public river domain is very narrow, and is defined as a fixed space, incompatible with fluvial dynamics. Floodplains are a strategic resource, as a defence against floods and to preserve river dynamics, sediment transport and biodiversity. It is necessary to preserve the fluvial territory and expand it by recovering lost land, and to maintain a space of freedom for the river, allowing its natural dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The frequency and magnitude of flash floods in the olive orchards of southern Spain have increased because of climate change and unsustainable olive-growing techniques. Affected surfaces occupy > 85 % of the rural regions of the Upper Guadalquivir Basin. Dangerous geomorphic processes record the increase of runoff, soil loss and streamflow through time. We report on ripple/dune growth over a plane bed on overland flows, deep incision of ephemeral gullies in olive groves and rock-bed erosion in streams, showing an extraordinary sediment transport capacity of sub-daily pluvial floods. We develop a novel method to design optimal solutions for natural flood management and erosion risk mitigation. We adopt physical-based equations and build a whole-system model that accurately reproduces the named processes. The approach yields the optimal targeted locations of nature-based solutions (NbSs) for active flow-control by choosing the physical-model parameters that minimise the peak discharge and the erosion-prone area, maximising the soil infiltration capacity. The sub-metric spatial resolution used to resolve microtopographic features of terrains/NbS yields a computational mesh with millions of cells, requiring a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to run massive numerical simulations. The early Cenozoic marine sedimentary record is punctuated by several brief episodes (<200 kyr) of abrupt global warming, called hyperthermals, that have disturbed ocean life and water physicochemistry. Moreover, recent studies of fluvial–deltaic systems, for instance at the Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum, revealed that these hyperthermals also impacted the hydrologic cycle, triggering an increase in erosion and sediment transport at the Earth's surface. Contrary to the early Cenozoic hyperthermals, the Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO), lasting from 40.5 to 40.0 Ma, constitutes an event of gradual warming that left a highly variable carbon isotope signature and for which little data exist about its impact on Earth surface systems. In the South Pyrenean foreland basin (SPFB), an episode of prominent deltaic progradation (Belsué–Atarés and Escanilla formations) in the middle Bartonian has been usually associated with increased Pyrenean tectonic activity, but recent magnetostratigraphic data suggest a possible coincidence between the progradation and the MECO warming period. To test this hypothesis, we measured the stable-isotope composition of carbonates (δ13C carb and δ18O carb) and organic matter (δ13C org) of 257 samples in two sections of SPFB fluvial–deltaic successions covering the different phases of the MECO and already dated with magnetostratigraphy. We find a negative shift in δ18O carb and an unclear signal in δ13C carb around the transition from magnetic chron C18r to chron C17r (middle Bartonian). These results allow, by correlation with reference sections in the Atlantic and Tethys, the MECO to be identified and its coincident relationship with the Belsué–Atarès fluvial–deltaic progradation to be documented. Despite its long duration and a more gradual temperature rise, the MECO in the South Pyrenean foreland basin may have led, like lower Cenozoic hyperthermals, to an increase in erosion and sediment transport that is manifested in the sedimentary record. The new data support the hypothesis of a more important hydrological response to the MECO than previously thought in mid-latitude environments, including those around the Tethys. We used wind-transported particle collectors of our own inhouse design to monitor the sediment flow in a citrus orchard in Southeast Spain. These collectors, which can differentiate sediment collected by direction of origin, are very efficient, economical, and easy to manufacture from thermoplastic filaments with an industrial 3D printer. Data were acquired from six vaned masts, each with four collectors at different heights, and on one of those masts, the collectors included load cells with one end attached to the collector floor and the other end to each oriented compartment in the collectors. The load cell values were interpreted in real time by a microcontroller and amplifier. The remote monitoring system was developed with an internet of things (IoT) platform. The results showed clear predominance of winds from the Northeast after dark, and from the South during the middle of the day. After analyzing the sediment transport rates and their balance, we found that those being deposited in the citrus orchard from the Northeast had a higher carbonate content (mainly calcite), which had an aggregating and therefore stabilizing effect against wind erosion of the soil. Furthermore, significant amounts of highly adhesive phyllosilicates were captured by the upper traps, which also contributed to reducing soil wind erodibility because of their adhesiveness. However, the sediments from the South with much more total transported mass were not deposited in the study zone, but leeward of it and contained a large amount of quartz, promoting abrasion and increasing wind erodibility of the soil. Residual flows are of major importance in coastal areas, driving environmental processes such as sediment transport or nutrient dispersion. Consequently, in those areas where a large tidal stream energy resource is available, prior to the installation of a tidal farm, it is imperative to assess how energy extraction affects the residual flows and, in particular, upwelling events. In this paper, the potential effects of different configurations of tidal stream farms on the residual circulation and its seasonality are analysed by means of a case study: Ria de Ortigueira, the westernmost of the Galician Rias Altas (NW Spain). For this purpose, a 3D numerical model was implemented and validated against field measurements. Next, a total of eight case studies, including the operation of bottom-fixed and floating converters under typical summer and winter scenarios, considering upwelling favourable winds, were studied. Overall, when a tidal farm operates, regardless of its configuration and the forcings considered, the resulting general residual flow pattern does not experience significant modifications. This pattern is characterized by a 2D circulation in the inner ria and a positive estuarine circulation in the middle and outer ria. The largest modifications of the residual flow are apparent in the vicinities of the plant, with maximum values of about 0.05 ms−1. Outside this area, the alteration is lower than 0.01 ms−1 and virtually negligible at some distance from the farm where upwelling events develop. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High‐resolution topographic models have revolutionized monitoring of river changes by comparing sequential river topographic surveys (i.e. change detection). Nevertheless, much more may be obtained from this innovative quantification of changes. In this paper, we enhance the interpretation of geomorphic processes by presenting a new method for understanding of sources and sinks of sediment, river sediment transfers and functional sediment connectivity. Repeat digital elevation models (DEMs) obtained by photogrammetry were used to quantify topographic change after two floods by creating a DEM of difference (DoD) of a 6.5 km‐long reach of Rambla de la Viuda stream, an ephemeral gravel‐bed river in eastern Spain. The proposed method involved dividing the channel into 10 m‐long longitudinal strips that were used to systematically draw boundaries between the erosional and depositional areas of the DoD. The analysis objectively: (i) drew a series of erosional and depositional segments, from 120 to 1360 m in length; (ii) estimated ranges of source‐to‐storage sediment transport distances, 320–670 m in the upstream and middle reaches and up to 2030 m in the lower reach; and (iii) obtained values of functional connectivity (i.e. the ratio between the sediment exported (erosion) and retained (deposition), ranging from 103 to 10−3). The variability in these three parameters along the river was found to be related to the level of channel disturbance by in‐stream mining during the 1990s and 2000s. Additionally, this method indicates that the main process responsible for self‐adjustment of the present morphosedimentary conditions is intra‐reach erosion of banks and channel beds. Development of third generation of Tidal Energy Converters (TECs) may boost the exploitation of the tidal stream energy resource in depth-limited regions. The hydrodynamic conditions of depth-limited tidal sites are highly influenced by changes in the bathymetric conditions, such as sedimentation and/or dredging operations, which are typical of these regions. Consequently, significant variations in terms of magnitude and predominant flow direction can be present during the operating life of tidal farms, which may compromise their viability. The objective of this work is to explore the potential effects caused by dredging operations on the performance of tidal farms and to propose initial threshold values for key variables (flow magnitude and direction, operating hours of TECs), to ensure the techno-economic viability of tidal farms. For this purpose, three potential tidal sites in a shallow water estuary (Ribadeo, NW Spain), were used as case study. Significant variations were found between the pre- and post-dredging scenarios in terms of energy production, with annual variations exceeding 38%, for the tidal sites present in the region. This paper presents a case study conducted in the Upper Argos River, in southeast Spain, to verify the applicability of the SWAT model for prediction of the water discharge and sediment load in a Mediterranean semiarid karst basin. For this purpose, the monthly and yearly discharge and sediment load records at the Argos reservoir gauge during the period 1976–2000 were used to calibrate the model, while data from 2001 to 2017 were used for validation. For both stages of the modeling the performance of the NSE, RSR, and PBIAS indices was good in the case of the monthly flow rate (NSE = 0.62 and 0.70 for calibration and validation, respectively; RSR = 0.61 and 0.54; PBIAS = −20.60% and − 16.09%) and acceptable for the estimation of the monthly sediment load (NSE = 0.52 and 0.58; RSR = 0.70 and 0.64; PBIAS = 10.65% and 15.20%). These indices showed a substantial improvement in the annual simulations, particularly in the calibration, for which the respective values of NSE and RSR were 0.89 and 0.32 for the flow rate and 0.81 and 0.42 for the sediment transport. Biological soil crust, or biocrust communities, are the dominating life form in many extreme habitats, such as arid and semiarid badlands, where water scarcity and highly erodible substrates limit vegetation cover. While climate, soil and biotic factors have been described as environmental filters influencing biocrust distribution in such biomes, little is known about the effect of terrain attributes on creating specific microhabitats that promote or restrict biocrust colonization. This study aimed to identify the main terrain attributes controlling biocrust distribution in the driest badland system in Europe, the Tabernas Badlands (SE Spain). To do this, we analysed the influence of different terrain attributes related to landscape stability and microclimate formation on the spatial distribution of lichen and cyanobacteria, using field measurements and topographical information from a LiDAR survey. Our results showed that the spatial distribution of cyanobacteria‐dominated biocrusts, which are physiologically and morphologically adapted to extreme drought and high UVA radiation, was mostly associated with areas of high potential incoming solar radiation. The exception was bare south‐aspect hillslopes with very high sediment transport potential, where bare physically crusted soils were the dominant ground cover. Lichen‐dominated biocrusts, in contrast, colonized near the top of north‐aspect hillslopes, characterized by low potential incoming solar radiation and potential evapotranspiration, and their cover decreased downstream, as conditions became good enough for vascular plants. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Current techniques assessing longshore sediment transport rates have large uncertainties, pleading for the development of alternative and complementary approaches. The present study proposes a method to estimate the decadal average rate of longshore transport at modern ebb‐tidal deltas based on a sediment budget analysis of the outer shoal growth. This transport is obtained as the balance of the other contributions to the shoal with the total sediment input rate obtained from an inverse application of the inlet reservoir model. The method is applied to the Guadiana ebb‐tidal delta, yielding an average longshore sediment transport rate (~85 000 m3 year−1) in good agreement with expectations for the region. It is exemplified that this decadal averaged rate can be used to improve longshore sediment transport expressions in order to study its variability over shorter time scales. At the Guadiana, the yearly longshore sediment transport from the improved formula ranges from ~25 000 m3 (westward) to ~245 000 m3 (eastward) and is related to the North Atlantic Oscillation index. Overall, the proposed method constitutes an alternative tool to constrain the average longshore sediment transport rate over decades in the vicinity of tidal inlets. Subaerial beach width plays a vital role when it comes to protecting coastal settlements and communities from storms. In many beaches the accretionary sequence is often characterized by the onshore migration of one or several intertidal bars that can eventually weld to the shore and contribute to the increase of the dry (subaerial) beach surface. An innovative experiment was carried out in summer 2015 to accelerate the onshore movement of the intertidal bar at Laida beach, Basque Country, northern Spain, by plowing it mechanically. A control zone where the bar could evolve naturally and a test zone where the plowing was performed were both defined. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of plowing on intertidal bar migration by analyzing field data collected during the experiment. Hydrodynamic data were gathered during a 3-day field campaign. Additionally, six cross-shore transects were defined, and their topographic data were taken every 15 days. Furthermore, a video imaging system allowed following and recording the planform evolution of the beach. Analyzing each profile's topographic data, it was observed that the intertidal bar in the plowed zone moved farther onshore than the intertidal bar in the control zone, suggesting that the plowing accelerated the onshore migration of the bar. Sediment transport was calculated by feeding a sediment transport formula with the hydrodynamic measurements taken, and it was concluded that the natural onshore migration of the bar is driven by onshore transport gradients related to wave asymmetry and skewness. It is suggested that the plowing caused an increase of onshore sediment transport onto the intertidal bar. The Atlantic mountains of Spain are suffering a strong landscape change due to a widespread and intensive emigration to urban areas since the 1950s. This process, representative of global developments in an imminent future, is dominated by urban societies and leads to deep landscape changes in which crop fields and grasslands are abandoned and progressively covered by forest and shrubs. These dynamics have caused in turn a decrease in the runoff and a general slowdown of geomorphological processes. The impacts of land cover change have been simultaneous to an irregularity in precipitation and a significant increase of temperatures. With this background, this paper assesses in detail the impact of landscape change occurred over the last decades (twentieth and twenty-first centuries) on the water and sediment yield in the Pisuerga catchment headwaters (Cantabrian Mountains, N Spain). We analyzed the different components of Global Change in a catchment of 233 km2 extent, that has passed from 15 to 2 habitants/km2, from multiple data sources. Evolution of land cover was reconstructed from aerial photographs, remote sensing and other resources. The climatic parameters have been studied through meteorological stations, and the hydrological and sedimentological responses over time are based on available runoff data and sedimentological analysis. Our results show a significant decrease in water and sediment transport mainly driven by vegetation increase occurred in a non-linear way, more intense immediately after abandonment. This fact opens the opportunity to control more accurately water resources in Mediterranean catchments through land use management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Rain storm events mobilise large proportions of fine sediments in catchment systems. Sediments from agricultural catchments are often adsorbed by nutrients, heavy metals and other (in)organic pollutants that may impact downstream environments. To mitigate erosion, sediment transport and associated pollutant transport, it is crucial to know the origin of the sediment that is found in the drainage system, and therefore, it is important to understand catchment sediment dynamics throughout the continuity of runoff events.Materials and methods: To assess the impact of the state of a catchment on the transport of fine suspended sediment to catchment outlets, an algorithm has been developed which classifies rain storm events into simple (clockwise, counter-clockwise) and compound (figure-of-eight; complex) events. This algorithm is the first tool that uses all available discharge and suspended sediment data and analyses these data automatically. A total of 797 runoff events from three experimental watersheds in Navarre (Spain) were analysed with the help of long-term, high-resolution discharge and sediment data that was collected between 2000 and 2014.Results and discussion: Morphological complexity and in-stream vegetation structures acted as disconnecting landscape features which caused storage of sediment along the transport cascade. The occurrence of sediment storage along transport paths was therefore responsible for clockwise hysteresis due to the availability of in-stream sediment which could cause the "first flush" affect. Conversely, the catchment with steeper channel gradients and a lower stream density showed much more counter-clockwise hysteresis due to better downstream and lateral surface hydrological connectivity. In this research, hydrological connectivity is defined as the actual and potential transfer paths in a catchment. The classification of event SSC-Q hysteresis provided a seasonal benchmark value to which catchment managers can compare runoff events in order to understand the origin and locations of suspended sediment in the catchment.Conclusions: A new algorithm uses all available discharge and suspended sediment data to assess catchment sediment dynamics. The role of overwash processes is of great relevance in the long-term evolution of sandy barriers, and it can also affect coastal infrastructures in the short term. In this work, a 10-month monitoring program based on the use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) in combination with Structure from Motion (SfM) algorithms was performed in order to monitor morphological changes and ulterior evolution at Camposoto beach, an overwash-prone coastal spit located in SW Spain. This UAS&SfM approach allowed the reconstruction of 6 Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) of the area with high temporal and spatial resolutions (RMS vertical errors spanning from 5 to 8 cm). The morphological changes occurred were detected using Geomorphic Change Detection Software in ArcGIS, and they were correlated with the oceanographic conditions that prevailed during the analysed period. The results obtained provided insight into the response of the system against storm-induced overwash, which caused significant erosion/accretion patterns over a pre-existing washover fan, as well as the landward migration of the system. In addition, this methodology captured the progressive partial recovery of the system, which included onshore transport of sand, fore-beach accretion, and berm reconstruction. Despite the partial recovery observed, spring tides also triggered non-storm overwash in the area during fair-weather conditions, allowing to rethink the actual vulnerability state of the spit against rollover processes. Ports are often located in naturally sheltered areas such as estuaries. The strong tidal currents that occur in many of these areas drive a dynamic morphodynamic regime, with the result that the approach channels to these ports are gradually infilled. Periodic dredging is therefore necessary to maintain the operativity of the port. A case in point is Ribadeo (NW Spain), an important port for the economy of the area. In this work, the sediment transport patterns of the estuary (Ria de Ribadeo) are investigated through high-resolution numerical modelling and field measurements covering a 4-year period. On this basis, a decision-aid tool is developed that enables to predict the time evolution of the approach channel and thus contributes to the planning of dredging operations and, more generally, the maintenance of adequate operativity levels in a cost-effective way. A comprehensive hydro-sedimentological dataset for the Isábena catchment, NE Spain, for the period 2010-2016 is presented to analyse water and sediment fluxes in a Mediterranean meso-scale catchment. The dataset includes rainfall data from twelve rain gauges distributed within the study area complemented by meteorological data of twelve official meteo-stations. It comprises discharge data derived from water stage measurements as well as suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) at six gauging stations of the River Isábena and its sub-catchments. Soil spectroscopic data from 351 suspended sediment samples and 152 soil samples were collected to characterize sediment source regions and sediment properties via fingerprinting analyses. The Isábena catchment (445 km2) is located in the Southern Central Pyrenees ranging from 450 m to 2,720 m a.s.l., together with a pronounced topography this leads to distinct temperature and precipitation gradients. The River Isábena shows marked discharge variations and high sediment yields causing severe siltation problems in the downstream Barasona Reservoir. Main sediment source are badland areas located on Eocene marls that are well connected to the river network. The dataset features a wide set of parameters in a high spatial and temporal resolution suitable for advanced process understanding of water and sediment fluxes, their origin and connectivity, sediment budgeting and for evaluating and further developing hydro-sedimentological models in Mediterranean meso-scale mountainous catchments. • Gully control measures reduced suspended sediment load at the catchment outlet. • Sediment connectivity decreased in the upper reach after gully control measures. • Livestock exclusion favoured revegetation and sediment disconnectivity. Gully rehabilitation is often applied as part of catchment management strategies aimed at reducing downstream sediment yields. However, the influences of gully control measures on the runoff and sediment transport processes in agroforestry systems have been seldom studied. In this paper, a thorough analysis of these processes was carried out in a valley-bottom gully located in a dehesa from SW Spain. The gully was monitored before and after implementation of different runoff and sediment control measures that included: gabion check-dams, brushwood check-dams and livestock exclusion through fencing. The aims of this work are: (1) to analyze the effect of the gully control measures on the hydrological dynamics and sediment load, and (2) to evaluate their effect on sediment connectivity at the catchment and channel scales. Changes in topography and connectivity were estimated using sequential Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) with a resolution of 0.02 m generated by Structure – from – Motion photogrammetry from aerial images acquired by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. Discharge and suspended sediment were monitored at the outlet. Results indicate that flood discharge was not influenced by the control measures, but suspended sediment concentration was reduced by 65%. The integration of the difference of connectivity index with topographic change maps highlighted the impact of the gully control measures on changes in sediment connectivity. A strong relationship between geomorphic dynamics and the spatial pattern of hydrological and sediment pathways were observed in the gully. The connectivity index (IC) increased in eroded areas, while deposition sites showed a decrease in the IC. Connectivity also decreased in the bank headcuts located within an area isolated from livestock. The implementation of runoff and sediment control measures in the channel was successful in stabilizing the expansion of the channel network and had beneficial effects in the short-term but further monitoring would be necessary to understand long-term effects. Dams and impoundments constructed in rivers produce changes in their hydrological and sediment transport regimes, regulate their flows and reduce the supply of sediments downstream. Artificially inducing floods from reservoirs in conjunction with sediment-replenishment strategies is currently being employed to enhance sediment supply to river catchment areas. In this study, sediment-replenished artificial floods are compared to their non-sediment replenishment counterparts. The hysteretic loops between suspended sediment concentration and water flow present low normalized hysteresis indices (close to zero) in the sediment-replenished artificial flood events. In the current work, sediment-replenishment produced a balanced suspended sediment transport in contrast to the without sediment-replenishment cases. The normalized hysteresis indices varied between the different particle sizes studied and the same water flow, indicating that different types of particles are transported differently despite being in the same water flow. Furthermore, both the suspended sediment transport and the sedimentation rate of particles during the flood events was greater for the sediment replenishment cases than for the non-sediment-replenishment cases. All things considered, sediment-replenished artificial flooding provides a successful management strategy for a more balanced suspended sediment transport that could be used as a river restoration practice. Shrub removal works in the Gavarres massif (NE Spain) have impacted runoff and sediment transport in a first-order experimental catchment (2.5 km2), named Vernegà. These works have consisted in removing the shrub layer that grows under a typical mixture of cork oak tree and Mediterranean pine forest, and have been undertaken regularly since 2002 to reduce risk of forest fire and increase cork oak productivity. In 2005, the works affected the catchment headwaters, resulting in significant changes in runoff and sediment transport rates. This study aimed to assess short-term changes in runoff and sediment transport rates in the experimental catchment by comparing them to rates prior to 2005. Measurements were made at two monitoring stations within the basin: i) Bosc (1.6 km2), where the main land use is forest; and ii) Campàs (2.5 km2), the catchment outlet, where the main land use is agriculture. Mean annual runoff increased from 11.7 mm before 2005 to 33.1 mm after 2005 at the Bosc station. At the Campàs station, runoff increased from 81.9 mm to 92.2 mm. These changes can be observed in the flow duration curves of both stations. An increase on the frequency when low flows (<5 l/s) take place has been observed, while the occurrence of high flows remains unchanged. The low flow increase period had a concomitant reduction of the no flow period, which reduced about 30 days in Bosc station. Suspended sediment yield increased from 250 kg·km−2·yr−1 at Bosc and 430 kg·km−2·yr−1 at Campàs to 940 kg·km−2·yr−1 and 4,350 kg·km−2·yr−1 respectively after forest works. The Rouse profile has been traditionally used to represent the vertical distribution of suspended sand in a marine benthic boundary layer. Yet it is one of the biggest unknowns in estuarine morphodynamics, largely due to uncertainties of the ratio of the sediment fall velocity to bed friction on which the Rouse exponent (R=w s/βku ⁎) is based. A field campaign was carried out at three different locations in the Oka estuary, northern Spain, in order to examine these uncertainties. Each location differed in grain size and flow condition thus offering a wide range of settings. The first survey was inside the estuary (wave sheltered, flood tide dominated and relatively broad estuary section), the second was at the distal ebb delta (ebb tide dominated and narrow estuary section), and the third was over the wave exposed proximal ebb delta (wave/flood tidal current combined flows and open sea). The aim of this study is to evaluate the applicability of the Rouse (1937) theory for the distribution of sand in suspension throughout a turbulent benthic boundary layer. A modified version of a Helley–Smith sampler was used to trap sand and measure the vertical distribution of sand in the water column. As well, a 1200 ADCP was used to measure flow velocity and backscatter together with an ADV (turbulence). The sand traps were found to have a sampling efficiency of 44%. The grain size at all stations was finer near the surface and coarser near the bed. The sand transport inside the estuary (Station 1) is inwards dominant. By contrast, the sand concentration during the ebb tide was ten times higher than during the flood tide at Station 2 and even higher at Station 3, which suggests that the sand transport over the ebb delta is seawards. The average Rouse parameters for Stations 1, 2, and 3 are 0.48±0.035, 0.78±0.23, and 0.46±0.06 respectively, which correspond to a coefficient of proportionality of the movability number, (χ) of 4 (Van Rijn, 1993). Abstract: Mediterranean rivers are characterized by highly variable hydrological regimes that are strongly dependent on the seasonal rainfall. Sediment transport is closely related to the occurrence of flash-floods capable to deliver enough kinetic energy to mobilize the bed and channel sediments. Contaminants accumulated in the sediments are likely to be mobilized as well during such events. However, whereas there are many studies characterizing contaminants in steady sediments, those devoted to the transport dynamics of suspended-sediment borne pollution are lacking. Here we examined the occurrence and transport of persistent organic microcontaminants present in the circulating suspended sediments during a controlled flushing flow in the low part of the River Ebro (NE Spain) 12km downstream of a well-known contaminated hot-spot associated to a nearby chloro-alkali industry. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and semi-volatile organochlorine pollutants (DDT and related compounds, DDX; polychlorinated byphenils, PCBs; and other organochlorine compound, OCs) were measured in the particulate material by GC–MS and GC–MS/MS, using previously developed analytical methods. The concentration levels observed were compared to previously reported values in steady sediments in the same river and discussed on a regulatory perspective. Hydrographs and sedigraphs recorded showed a peak-flow of 1300m3 s−1 and a corresponding peak of suspended sediments of 315mgL−1. Combination of flow discharge, suspended sediments and pollutants' concentrations data allowed for quantifying the mass flows (mass per unit of time) and setting the load budgets (weight amount) of the different pollutants transported by the river during the monitored event. Mean mass-flows and total load values found were 20.2mgs−1 (400g) for PAHs, 38mgs−1 (940g) for DDX, 44mgs−1 (1038g) for PCBs and 8mgs−1 (200g) for OCs. Abstract: A numerical model to simulate the dispersion of particle-reactive tracers in Cádiz Bay (SW Spain) has been developed. It includes a hydrodynamic submodel to provide water currents, a sediment transport submodel, which provides suspended matter concentrations and sedimentation rates and the pollutant dispersion model. Pollutant exchanges between the liquid and solid phases are described in a dynamic way, using kinetic transfer coefficients. Results of the hydrodynamic and sediment transport models have been compared with observations. The contamination of sediments of the bay by fallout 137Cs has been simulated. The existence of an accumulation area in the inner bay, found in field measurements, has been reproduced by the model. Dispersion experiments for Zn and 226Ra have also been carried out. Post-fire practices (PFP) aim to reduce soil erosion and favour vegetation recovery, but their effectiveness is spatially heterogeneous and under debate because of the economic and environmental costs. This study evaluates the different changes (Δ) of canopy cover (CC), sediment connectivity (SC) and local topography in four areas affected by the Pinet fire in eastern Spain (August 8th, 2018) and managed with: totally burnt with tree removal and long log erosion barriers (LEBs) (Pinet-1), partially burnt without PFP (Pinet-2), totally burnt with tree removal and short LEBs (Pinet-3), and totally burnt without PFP (Pinet-4). An unburnt nearby area was used as control site (Pinet-5). High-resolution images obtained before the fire and during two drone flights after the fire (10.5 and 5.5 months after the fire and PFP; and 18 and 13 months after the fire and PFP) were analysed; and LiDAR- and SfM-derived digital elevation models used to compute the Aggregated Index of SC (AICv2). After correcting calculations, because of the different input sources, and excluding the forest roads (x ¯ =3.6% of the total surface), CC in the first post-fire scenario was of 25.5% (−40.4% with respect to the pre-fire scenario), 14.5% (−68.4%), 23.8% (−43.7%), 26.9% (−26.5%) and 29.6% (−32.7%) in Pinet-1, P-2_totally_burnt, P-2_partially_burnt, P-3 and P-4; and ΔCC among the drone flights were of +2.45%, +0.02% and +10.54% in Pinet-1, Pinet-3 and Pinet-4. The annual CC recovery rate decrease from 27.5% to 19.1% per year between the first and the second post-fire scenario, indicating a quick vegetation recovery, especially in the first year, and considering the surface area covered by rocks (x ¯ =16.3%). Topographic changes indicated that not install LEBs favoured shorter flow length pathways after the fire, and thus, runoff will flow faster to cover the same area, achieving higher velocity and thus soil detachment capacity. Sediment connectivity increased in all burnt sub-sites after the fire (Δ 1 ¯ =+32.4%), but the increments in the two sub-sites with LEBs were 36% lower than the increase in the sub-sites without LEBs. The increase of connectivity in the first and second post-fire scenarios was −32% and −45% in the sub-site with long LEBs compared with the sub-site with short LEBs. Overall, LEBs effectively favoured vegetation recovery, lengthened overland flow pathways, and reduced sediment transport in the early months, but their usefulness was not as pronounced during the second post-fire year, although these results may be influenced by the Mediterranean conditions of the site. Debris flows occurred three weeks after a wildfire in August 1986 in the Najerilla River valley in the Iberian Range, northern Spain. The flows were triggered by a brief, intense rainstorm (approximately 25mmh−1 over 15min) in a small area with steep slopes covered by a thick colluvium of quartzite clasts. This storm resulted in the development of several unconfined hillslope debris flows and the formation of an alluvial fan at the mouth of the Pítare stream, which partially blocked the Najerilla River. We analysed the conditions that led to the development of the debris flows, and estimated the rainfall threshold for the debris flows to occur as well as the total volume of mobilised sediment. Four factors contributed to the debris flows: (i) the occurrence of a rainstorm three weeks after a wildfire, which had removed the plant cover from the soil; (ii) the steep slopes in the area (>30°), which were the most affected by debris flows; (iii) the presence of quartzite scarps on the hillslopes, which favoured the development of a ‘firehose effect’ involving channelised surface runoff; and (iv) the low plasticity index values of the fine material of the colluvium (indices of 7 to 8), which enabled rapid liquefaction. Estimates of rainfall intensity derived from the estimated peak flow in the Pítare stream suggests that around 80mm of rainfall fell in approximately 15min, although this is clearly an overestimated value given the high proportion of sediment load transported during the peak flow. Various equations estimated a rainfall-threshold of approximately 25mmh−1 considering a concentration time of 15min. The total sediment transported by the debris flows was 10,500m3 (15,750Mg, 6800Mgkm−2), and the Pítare stream alone transported a minimum of 4000m3 (6000Mg, 2500Mgkm−2). These results suggest that the rainfall threshold for initiating debris flows decreases following a wildfire, such that an ordinary rainstorm is able to trigger a severe erosion and sediment transport event. Given the absence of fresh landslide scars on the hillslopes, the origin of the fire-related debris flows in the Najerilla River valley appears to have been directly linked to increased rates of overland flow having a greater effect than infiltration for triggering debris flows. Guisado, E., Malvárez, G. and Navas, F., 2013. Morphodynamic environments of the Costa del Sol, Spain. The morphodynamic environments of the Costa del Sol, in southern Spain, have never been investigated at a littoral cell scale. In the last half of the 20th century the tourism industry have transformed the coastal landscapes and, importantly, the natural processes inducing irreversible damages and changes. For the most part, a project-based view on engineering works has focussed on individual beach behaviour, but no assessment on morphodynamics has been reported at physiographic scale. Using an integrated modelling approach, which combines wave energy propagation and digital terrain integration (land and sea), in this paper a new characterisation of coastal morphodynamics for western Costa del Sol is presented. Methodologically, the challenge of integrating land and sea has been overcome using existing methods, which takes high-resolution interoperable bathymetric models of the continental shelf of this section of the Mediterranean, and couples it with the Official Digital Terrain Model. This allows for propagation of waves from deep water to realistic nearshore environments. Wave input is represented by wave spectra from the recording network of the Spanish Port Authority, and the wave propagation model SWAN is used to propagate wave parameters onshore. Given the variability of wave climate in the region, characterised by long periods of calms (over 77% per year) followed by high energy events (dominated by high frequency storm waves with periods of less than 7 seconds and maximum wave heights exceeding 5 metres), a wave power index is used to identify and provide input data for extreme wave conditions of great significance for beach morphodynamics in the region. Results show that at littoral cell scale, even in the presence of the steep nearshore (i) the adaptation of the system tends towards generating dissipative environments, (ii) the presence of abrupt changes in local bathymetry affects significantly wave orbital velocities even at depths beyond wave base potentially inducing nearshore sediment transport, and (iii) high energy events affect the coastal stretch in complex ways, where highly active short-crested/high-frequency wave conditions induce transitional morphodynamic states. Abstract: On occasions, archaeologists have to deal with serious difficulties to differentiate between processes that ultimately are responsible for the formation of stratigraphic units. Sometimes we face problems related with depositional units in multilayered deposits and other times, we ask for the character of some dark surface soils, very similar to natural paleosols and usually associated with archaeological findings. In both cases, the problems we must address concern the relative impact of human activities. The imbalance between anthropic and natural processes in the formation of archaeological deposits is crucial for a correct interpretation of the processes involved in the formation of archaeological sites, but also of their occupation-abandonment dynamics and the understanding of their spatial behaviors and relationship with the environment. In this paper we propose a new methodological approach for the identification of anthropogenic fingerprints in stratigraphic units through Rare Earth Elements (REE) soil analysis. The role of REE for the effective identification of sediment provenance due to their coherent behavior during weathering, erosion and fluvial transportation and their high resistance to chemical mobilization is well known in other areas of knowledge. We try to explore its potentiality in a challenging archaeological context. Our purpose was to identify human traces in stratigraphic units where archaeological materials are scarce or absent intertwined with others richer in archaeological remains by the determination of multiple elements and statistical studies. We believe that Rare Earth Elements (REE) soil analysis provides unique insights for a better characterization of natural and archaeological sediments but more importantly to recognize different stages of the gradient. We expect to discern between natural versus anthropic units and between primary versus secondary deposits (redeposition), using the case of the Neolithic site of Mas d''Is (Alicante, Spain) as an example. The application of the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) remarks differences in REE values, those analysis show differences between units of undoubtedly anthropogenic origin and control samples taken from natural sediments –including marls bedrock–, in their vicinity, but also we could notice finer nuances like the degree of human contributions to paleosols formation. Atmospheric forcing during 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 winter months showed differences in both intensity and persistence that led to distinct oceanographic responses. Persistent dry northern winds caused strong heat losses (14 211 W m-2) in winter 2009-2010 that triggered a pronounced sea surface cooling compared to winter 2010-2011 (1597 W m-2 lower). As a consequence, a large volume of dense shelf water formed in winter 2009-2010, which cascaded at high speed (up to ~ 1 m s-1) down Cap de Creus canyon, as measured by current-meters in mooring lines deployed inside the canyon at 300m and 1000m water depth. The lower heat losses recorded in winter 2010-2011, together with an increased river discharge, resulted in lowered density waters over the shelf, thus preventing the formation of dense shelf water. Particle fluxes were concurrently measured by using sediment traps at the same mooring stations. High total mass fluxes (up to 84.9 gm-2 d-1) recorded in winter 2009-2010 indicate that dense shelf water cascading resuspended and transported sediments at least down to 1000m deep within the canyon. Sediment fluxes were lower (28.9 gm-2 d-1) under the quieter conditions of winter 2010-2011. The dominance of the lithogenic fraction in mass fluxes during the two winters points to a resuspension origin for most of the particles transported down canyon. The variability in organic matter and opal contents relates to seasonally controlled inputs associated to the plankton spring bloom during March and April of both years. Our measurements of particle fluxes (including major components and grain size distribution), together with meteorological and oceanographic parameters such as wind speed, turbulent heat flux, near-bottom water temperature, current speed and suspended sediment concentration, during winters 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 along the Cap de Creus submarine canyon, show the important role of atmospheric forcings in transporting particulate matter through the submarine canyon and towards the deep sea. Cap de Creus Canyon (CCC) is known as a preferential conduit for particulate matter leaving the Gulf of Lion continental shelf towards the slope and the deep basin, particularly in winter when storms and dense shelf water cascading coalesce to enhance the seaward export of shelf waters. During the CASCADE (CAscading, Storm, Convection, Advection and Downwelling Events) cruise in March 2011, deployments of recording instruments within the canyon and vertical profiling of the water column properties were conducted to study with high spatial-temporal resolution the impact of such processes on particulate matter fluxes. In the context of a mild and wet 2010-2011 winter, no remarkable dense shelf water formation was observed. On the other hand, the experimental setup allowed to study the impact of E-SE storms on the hydrographical structure and the particulate matter fluxes in the CCC. The most remarkable feature in terms of sediment transport was a period of dominant E-SE winds from 12 to 16 March, including two moderate storms of significant wave heights=4-4.5m. During this period, a plume of freshened, relatively cold and turbid water flowed at high speeds along the southern flank of CCC in an approximate depth range of 150-350m. The density of this water mass only reached ~28.78 kgm-3, indicating that it did not cascade into the canyon and that merely down-welled into it forced by the accumulation of seawater along the coast during the storms and by the subsequent strong cyclonic circulation induced over the shelf. Suspended sediment load in this turbid intrusion was comparable at three heights above bottom where turbidimeters were installed (10, 75 and 115m above bottom) on the southern canyon flank and oscillated between 10 and 50mg L-1. Current speeds were also comparable in the depth range profiled by ADCPs (40 to 150mab) and reached values up to 90 cm s-1 during the peak of the strongest storm (13 March, Hs = 4.5m). Sediment transport at 75mab on the southern canyon flank was estimated at 1-1.5 t m-2 for the entire deployment while very close to the bottom (5m above) in the canyon head it was less than 0.6 t m-2 during the same period. We provide a rough estimation of 105 t of sediment transported through the canyon along its southern wall during a 3 day-long period of storm-induced downwelling. Following the veering of the wind direction (from SE to NW) on 16 March, down-welling ceased, currents inside the canyon reversed from down to up-canyon, and the turbid shelf plume was evacuated from the canyon, most probably flowing along the southern canyon flank and being entrained by the general SW circulation after leaving the canyon confinement. This study highlights that remarkable sediment transport occurs in the CCC, and particularly along its southern flank, even during mild and wet winters, in absence of cascading and under limited external forcing. The sediment transport associated to eastern storms like the ones described in this paper tends to enter the canyon by its downstream flank, partially affecting the canyon head region. Sediment transport during these events is not constrained near the seafloor but distributed in a depth range of 200-300m above the bottom. Our paper broadens the understanding of the complex set of atmosphere-driven sediment transport processes acting in this highly dynamic area of the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. Abstract: An array of mooring lines deployed between 300 and 1900m depth along the Lacaze-Duthiers and Cap de Creus canyons and in the adjacent southern open slope was used to study the water and sediment transport on the western Gulf of Lions margin during the 2006 intense cascading period. Deep-reaching cascading pulses occurred in early January, in late January and from early March to mid-April. Dense water and sediment transport to the deep environments occurred not only through submarine canyons, but also along the southern open slope. During the deep cascading pulses, temporary upper and mid-canyon and open slope deposits were an important source of sediment to the deep margin. Significant sediment transport events at the canyon head only occurred in early January because of higher sediment availability on the shelf after the stratified and calm season, and in late February because of the interaction of dense shelf water cascading with a strong E–SE storm. During the January deep cascading pulses, increases in suspended sediment concentration within the canyon were greater and earlier at 1000m depth than at 300m depth, whereas during the March–April deep cascading pulses sediment concentration only increased below 300m depth, indicating resuspension and redistribution of sediments previously deposited at upper and mid-canyon depths. Deeper than 1000m depth, net fluxes show that most of the suspended sediment left the canyon and flowed along the southern open slope towards the Catalan margin, whereas a small part flowed down-canyon and was exported basinward. Additionally, on the mid- and lower-continental slope there was an increase in the near-bottom currents induced by deep open-sea convection processes and the propagation of eddies. Summary: The erosion and transport of fine-grained sediment in small mountainous catchments involve complex processes occurring at different scales. The suspended sediment yields (SSYs) delivered downstream are difficult to accurately measure and estimate because they result from the coupling of all these processes. Using high frequency discharge and suspended sediment data collected in eight small mountainous catchments (0.45–22km2) from four distinct regions, we studied the relationships between event-based SSY and a set of other variables. In almost all the catchments, the event peak discharge (Qmax ) proved to be the best descriptor of SSY, and the relations were approximated by single power laws of the form . The β exponents ranged between 0.9 and 1.9 across the catchments, while variability in α was much higher, with coefficients ranging between 25 and 5039. The broad distribution of α was explained by a combination of site-specific physical factors, such as the percentage of degraded areas and hillslope gradient. Further analysis of the factors responsible for data dispersion in each catchment was carried out. Seasonality had a significant influence on variability; but overall, most of the scattering in the SSY–Qmax regressions was explained by the short-lasting memory effects occurring between successive events (i.e. in-channel temporary storage and remobilization of sediment; antecedent moisture conditions). The predictability of SSY–Qmax models was also assessed. Simulations of SSY per event and of annual SSY were conducted by using the computed regressions and the measured Qmax . Estimates of SSY per event were very uncertain. In contrast, annual SSY estimates based on the site-specific models were reasonably accurate in all the catchments, with interquartile ranges remaining in the ±50% error interval. The prediction quality of SSY–Qmax relations was partly attributed to the statistical compensation that likely occurred between extreme values over a year; but it also suggests that the complex processes occurring at the event scale were smoothed at the annual scale. This SSY–Qmax rating appears as a parsimonious predicting tool for roughly estimating SSY in small mountainous catchments. Abstract: Suspended load dynamics were analyzed for the period 2007–2009 in a semi-meandering cross-section under different hydrological conditions. Samples were collected at four different points of the cross-section. During “low discharges” (≤600 m3/s) suspended load samples were collected at-a-monthly basis, whereas at “high discharges” (>600 m3/s) sampling was conducted intensively (at-a-daily basis during the first stages of the flood event). Results indicated that during low discharges, both organic and inorganic suspended load concentrations tended to be uniformly distributed across the fluvial section; but during high discharges, two distinct areas were found: an area extending from the “Inner-bank” to the “Channel centre” (Area-I) with higher suspended concentrations (organic and inorganic) than those recorded in the “Outer bank” (Area-II). This phenomenon was likely related to the formation of secondary flow velocity cells and the activation of new sources of sediment. In addition, a non-significant relationship between organic suspended load and water flow was observed in the outer-bank. At-a-monthly basis, the analysis of the suspended load showed the existence of an intra-annual cycle of the inorganic concentrations, with a progressive increase from October to March followed by a decrease from March to September. Nevertheless, the organic suspended load did not show any trend, being equally distributed along the year, suggesting that other sources of organic matter besides phytoplankton are predominant. Abstract: An environmental study of Algeciras Bay is carried out through numerical modelling. First, a 2D barotropic model is applied to calculate tides and mean circulation. Results of this model are used by a sediment transport model which provides suspended matter concentrations and sedimentation rates in the Bay. It includes three particle classes. An effective diffusion coefficient has been calibrated simulating temperature distribution inside the Bay. An additional validation is obtained from an independent nitrate dispersion simulation. Then heavy metal dispersion patterns are investigated using a model which includes water–sediment metal interactions and uses the outputs of the hydrodynamic and sediment transport models. The metal transport model has been applied to simulate the dispersion of Zn, Cu and Ni. Results from the hydrodynamic, sediment and metal transport models have been compared with measurements. Model results also indicate that transport inside the Bay is relatively weak. Numerical experiments have been carried out to determine flushing times for conservative and non-conservative pollutants. Flushing time is about 20days for a conservative tracer, and this value is mainly due to the M 2 residual current. Tides are not effective in removing pollutants. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

BRAMATO, S.; ORTEGA-SÁNCHEZ, M.; MANS, C., and LOSADA, M.A., 2012. Natural recovery of a mixed sand and gravel beach after a sequence of a short duration storm and moderate sea states. Using time-averaged images collected by a high-resolution camera, this paper examines the natural recovery of a mixed sand and gravel beach (Carchuna, Spain) after the passing of a westerly storm (significant wave height, H0 > 3 m; significant wave period, T0 == 7-9 s; 0.19%% occurrence per year; duration 36 h), followed by mild to low-energy ( H0 < 1 m, T0 == 4-6 s, 33.78%%) and moderate-energy ( H0 == 1-3 m, T0 == 6-9 s, 15.80%%) sea conditions. The response of the beach after two storms approaching from the east (0.28%%) is also examined. The analysis focuses on one of the beach horn-embayment cells characterized by a bimodal sediment distribution, which is representative of the beach coastline. The most significant morphological changes occurred after the westerly storm episode and consisted of a shoreline erosion in the order of 5 m/d with a reduction in the beach slope and the cusp horn cross-shore dimension. In conditions of erosion, the sand on the coastline was rapidly transported cross-shore, exposing the underlying gravel sediments which were dragged a short distance seaward to create a longshore bar. The bar subsequently acted as a natural barrier, which helped to protect the beach from further erosion. During the mild to low-energy and moderate sea states which followed, the beach rapidly recovered and the coastline morphology showed a visible seaward advancement of the horn with an increase in the width of the cross-shore section in comparison to the initial prestorm profile. Through conditions of accumulation, the sand was resuspended and mobilized onshore, creating a layer of sand along the shoreline and rapidly recuperating the beach to its original state. Morphologic evolution of Carchuna is further investigated through several parameterizations on the forcing condition and in consideration of sediment distribution and beach bathymetry. The results provide insight into the interrelation between the sand and gravel of a mixed beach, showing that bimodal beaches respond differently to commonly accepted empirical sandy-beach relationships. Abstract: Samples of suspended and fine channel bed sediment were used to examine the spatial and temporal variability in the amount of fine-grained sediment and associated contaminants temporarily stored in the Na Borges River (319km2) in Mallorca and the relationship of such channel storage to the fluxes of fine sediment and associated contaminant through the system. This Mediterranean groundwater-dominated river drains a predominantly agricultural catchment, although urbanisation during the twentieth century has changed the catchment hydrology. A re-suspension technique was used to obtain estimates of channel storage at monthly intervals during the 2004–2005 hydrological year at eight locations along the main stem of the stream (i.e. 26km). The estimates of fine sediment storage ranged between 0 and 13,000gm−2, with a mean value of 2400gm−2. Only Cu exceeded the critical threshold (36μgg−1), established by existing guidelines for the contaminant content of fluvial sediment. The results demonstrated significant spatial and temporal variability, in response to the influence of urban point sources, agricultural practises, seasonal groundwater interactions and the first-flush effect. The amount of fine sediment entering storage during the study period was 515.2t, representing the net increase in storage over the study period. As a result, the mean specific storage was 21tkm−1. Suspended-sediment load and temporary fine sediment storage are the two basic components of the channel sediment budget that interact to determine sediment transport through a channel system, and they can therefore be used to compute the total input of sediment and associated contaminants to the system. Accordingly, storage values were compared with estimates of suspended sediment load and associated contaminant load values at three measuring stations along the river. During the study period, storage in the main channel system represented 87% of the sediment input and 68% of the contaminant input, indicating that deposition was more important than transport. The low gradient of the main channel and the low return period (i.e. 0–2.5years) of the flood events that occurred during the study period meant that remobilised bed sediment and associated contaminants were redeposited downstream rather than being flushed to the catchment outlet as suspended sediment. Furthermore, the river bed is dry during the summer months, allowing sealing and crusting processes to stabilise the sediment deposited during the wet season and thereby reduce its availability for remobilisation at the beginning of the next wet season. Together, these factors promote sediment deposition and storage, with the result that sediment progressively accumulate over several hydrological years until a major flood event (i.e. return period≈5years) evacuates the stored sediment. Abstract: The Cap de Creus and the Palamós submarine canyon heads were instrumented during two consecutive winters to study their respective role in the dynamics of the sediment transport on the north-western Mediterranean Sea. Several events of dense shelf-water cascading (DSWC) were identified simultaneously at both canyons and compared between them. DSWC events were characterized by abrupt drops of temperature, increases of current speeds, and peaks of high suspended-sediment concentrations (SSC). Concentrations up to 170mg l−1 were recorded in both studied winters at the Cap de Creus Canyon coinciding with the first DSWC event of the winter concurrent with an eastern storm. Overall, the amount of sediment transported during the DSWC events was one order of magnitude greater at the Cap de Creus Canyon than at the Palamós Canyon. Results from this study have identified for the first time the presence of DSWC events also in the Palamós Canyon head, south of the Gulf of Lions (GoL), and corroborated previous findings that the Cap de Creus Canyon is the main pathway for DSWC and the associated sediment transport from the GoL down to the deeper regions of the north-western Mediterranean. Gullies developed on sandy lithologies are scarce and few studies have been reported on these landscapes. This paper presents an approach to study such singular landforms. The studied gullies appear on the slopes of a group of mesas and cuestas of Upper Cretaceous sediments located in the Northern piedmont of the Guadarrama Mountains, Spain. Landforms of these gullied areas were catalogued, characterized and quantified with reconnaissance methods, providing information about the most active geomorphic processes. These are being monitored in a 1.32 ha representative gullied catchment, the Barranca de los Pinos. In its high gradient slopes, where mass movements occur, high resolution topographical surveys are being carried out by Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS). On low gradient slopes, runoff and rain splash are being monitored in micro plots; and in the main channel, sediment transport and water discharge are being measured. This ensemble of methods, some of them novel, is providing patterns of sediment movement within the gully system, and a hypothesis of high activity rates has been confirmed. High gradient sand slopes without carbonate caprock erode fourfold compared to the capped slopes. In the low gradient slopes, those ungullied produce more runoff while exposed sands yield more sediment; sands covered by litter produce the least runoff and sediment. Sediment flows naturally through the drainage network, from source areas to deposition zones. Sedimentary disequilibrium in rivers and coastlines is related to the imbalance within the fluvial system caused mostly by dams, instream mining, and changes in land use. This phenomenon is also responsible for ecological perturbations in rivers and streams. A broad need exists to establish comprehensive management strategies (soft measures) that would go beyond site-specific engineering practices (technical measures) typically taken to solve particular problems. Long-term programs are also required to monitor sediment transport in river basins, in order to assess the magnitude and variability of sediment transfer and potential deficits. This paper shows examples of rivers with important sediment disequilibrium in the Ebro and adjacent basins. These basins, like most in the Iberian Peninsula, experience sediment discontinuity in the catchment-river-coast system. Reservoir siltation is the main quantitative issue. Land use change and especially gravel mining downstream from dams accentuate the process. We also present and discuss recent developments on water and sediment management undertaken to improve the morphosedimentary dynamics of rivers. Abstract: Catchment scale suspended sediment (SS) transport studies in northwest Spain are of special interest as little research at this scale has been done in this region. However, the role of sediments in the transfer of nutrients and contaminants to coastal areas in this region has been highlighted. Data were collected from the Corbeira catchment during a 3-year period and the variability in SS load at different temporal scales (within-events variability, monthly/seasonal, and annual) was analyzed. The statistical relationship between discharge and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) from samples obtained every 15days as well as during runoff events in October 2004 to September 2007 showed a marked scatter of points. Hence, the rating curve method does not seem appropriate to estimate SSC in this catchment. The results also demonstrated that at the within-events scale, most of the SS peaks preceded the discharge peaks (70% of runoff events), implying that zones nearby or well connected to the stream are the dominant sediment source areas. In some cases, rills and ephemeral gullies developed in cropland were the main source of sediment delivered to the stream. Furthermore, a reduction in SSC was observed in sequences of events, which can be mainly linked to a phenomenon of sediment exhaustion. At the seasonal scale, most of the total annual SS load was transported during the autumn months, the period in which, generally, the largest number of events occurred, while in the summer, total annual SS load was very low (<1%). At the annual scale, specific SS yield (SSY) ranged from 5.4 to 11.2Mg km-2 y-1. The variability in SSY was correlated with the number and magnitude of runoff events recorded yearly, since runoff events dominated SS transport and yield. Summary: Soil erosion and sediment delivery to streams are important environmental problems and major concerns in sustainable development. In recent years several tools have been proposed for assessing the delivery of sediment from hillslopes to stream networks, but there are still few examples of their application to large basins, and studies include a discussion of calibration and validation issues. In this study a spatially distributed soil erosion and sediment delivery model (WATEM/SEDEM) was applied to the watershed of the Barasona Reservoir (1504km2, Central Spanish Pyrenees), which is drained by the Ésera and Isábena Rivers. Model calibration and validation was based on the depositional history of the Barasona Reservoir and suspended sediment records over 3years (May 2005–May 2008) at the outlet of the Isábena River. Despite interannual differences in precipitation and runoff, it was possible to establish an optimum value (7–23) for the ktc parameter. This enabled estimation of the long-term average annual sediment yield to the reservoir, as well as the relative contribution of each river. Large spatial variability in hillslope sediment delivery was found, and the major sediment sources were in the lower part of the watershed (agricultural fields) and in the badlands developed on Eocene marls in the middle part of the watershed (Pyrenean Inner Ranges). The relative importance of sediment source areas was assessed in relation to land use, and the relationship between the sediment delivery ratio and the catchment area was studied as a function of the geomorphological units. For the moment WATEM/SEDEM remains mainly as a researcher’s tool, until either the problem of the scarcity of soil erosion data or the need for calibration of the transport parameters will be solved. Abstract: This paper examines the relations between rainfall, runoff and suspended sediment transport in the Isábena basin during a quasi-average hydrological year. The Isábena is a mesoscale river basin that drains a mountainous area comprising patches of highly erodible materials (badlands). The paper includes an analysis of the different hydrological and sedimentary responses of the catchment to a similar rainfall. Thirty-four floods were studied, with a very variable response observed. Runoff coefficients ranged from 0.32% to 33%. The sedimentary response was also highly variable, with maximum suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) oscillating between <0.1 and 90gl−1 and flood sediment loads varying from 27 to 54,000t per hydrological event. Most sediment load was concentrated in spring when competent floods occur frequently. Pearson correlation matrix and backward stepwise multiple regression indicate that the hydrological response of the catchment is strongly correlated with total precipitation, event duration, and rainfall of the previous days. Very low correlation was observed with rainfall intensity. The relation between rainfall and sediment transport followed the same trend. Sediment variables (e.g., total load and SSC) were significantly correlated with variables such as total rainfall and rainfall over the previous days, although the significance level was lower in comparison with the runoff related variables. There was again no correlation between sediment variables and rainfall intensity. On-going research in the area suggests that, apart from rainfall, factors such as sediment availability in the badlands and accumulation of sediment in the channels influences the river''s sedimentary response. The non-linear hydrosedimentary response is reflected in the wide range of runoff coefficients and sediment loads that have been observed in response to similar amounts of precipitation. The mouth of the Guadiaro River (SW Spain), oriented in a NE-SW direction, is often closed, resulting in environmental, social, and economic problems. An analysis of the factors influencing this phenomenon was performed using the Coastal Modeling System, a numerical model based on the mild slope equation (waves, currents, and sediment transport), and a coastal evolution study was performed comparing aerial photographs to the monitoring campaigns carried out in 2005 and 2006 (topographic surveys, current meters, tidal gauges, and water quality parameters). Global transport at the Spanish south Mediterranean coast occurs in a southwestern direction. However, the spit that closes the Guadiaro River grows in the opposite direction. The points and conditions where transport direction changes occur along the coastline were identified. The results, obtained from 200 different propagations, were consistent with field data, showing that northeastern littoral transport during easterly waves was sufficient to block the river mouth. Furthermore, significant differences in sediment transport patterns were found despite the existence of a fixed wave power direction. Through this research we also learned that use of wave propagation numerical models by nonexperts is prone to error, as small variations in input parameters can induce dramatically different results that may be contradictory in certain bathymetric configurations. Abstract: This study investigates the land–ocean interactions along the northern margin of the Gulf of Cadiz in the vicinity of the Guadiana River. Benthic foraminifera and sedimentological characteristics were analysed in a sedimentary sequence spanning ca. 5000 years (core 8, 22m water depth) retrieved from the inner shelf prodeltaic wedge. The analyses were integrated in a temporal framework based on accelerated mass spectrometry radiocarbon dating. Paleoenvironmental changes and sediment transfer mechanisms from the continent to the shelf were investigated and related to climatic oscillations and anthropogenic impact in the region. The results allowed the identification of two main periods of deposition. The first period, from ca. 5150cal.BP (core base) to 1500–1200cal.BP, is characterised by a mix of fine and coarse sediments, relatively constant percentages of terrigenous and bioclasts, and benthic foraminifera species characteristic of coastal environments. These features indicate an environment strongly influenced by discharge from the Guadiana River. The second period, from ca. 1500–1200cal.BP to ca. 200cal.BP (core top), is characterised by silt-clay fraction dominated sediments, an increase in terrigenous sediment towards the top, and benthic foraminifera species characteristic of environments with low levels of energy. An increase in the level of human occupation associated with changes in climate led to widespread erosion and soil loss to the continental shelf during this period, with possible silting up of the Guadiana eastern distributary, allowing the transport of high amounts of sediment to the shelf by the western distributary that led to the enhancement of fine sedimentation and the formation of the prodeltaic wedge in the area of the studied core. Numerical modeling of dredged pits is conducted to investigate the hydrodynamic and morphodynamic interaction in offshore sand extractions. Based on an analytical formulation, a semianalytical numerical model (MEMPITS) has been developed to study the morphodynamic evolution of offshore (ho . 20 m) sand borrow areas. The numerical model has been applied to study the morphodynamic evolution of two offshore sand borrow areas in the Balearic Islands (Spain). Field data allowed a detailed characterization of the evolution of the sandpits. Time series of local hydrodynamics have been obtained using generation models (hindcast) combined with local wave and flow models. A verification of the simple model has been carried out using relatively slight adjustments to the calibration factors. The simple model provides good estimates of the infill rate and migration velocities of the offshore pits on the scale of years. This semianalytical tool allows a quick systematic investigation of the physical mechanisms as well as a etailed sensibility analysis regarding the pit design parameters. These parameters include location (water depth), pit length, width, depth, and orientation with respect to the mean flow. A nondimensional analysis based on the model is also carried out to explore the role of the different variables involved in the evolution of offshore sandpits. Abstract: In the Gulf of Lions (GoL), dense water overflowing off the shelf occurs seasonally and represents the main mechanism affecting the shelf-slope exchange of particulate organic matter (OM). Most of the dense water export takes place in the south-western GoL and in particular through Cap de Creus (CdC) submarine canyon. Here, benthic instruments were deployed to collect down-canyon particulate fluxes whereas surface sediments were taken after the cascading event along the sediment dispersal system on the shelf, in CdC canyon and in the nearby Lacaze-Duthiers (LD) canyon. The chemical composition of the suspended material and surface sediments were investigated using several proxies including organic and inorganic carbon, total nitrogen, biogenic silica, δ13C, Δ14C, and alkaline CuO oxidation products. Thermohaline anomalies and high current speed events were measured in CdC canyon since December 2004 until mid-April 2005 indicating a marked off-shelf export of dense water trough the canyon. During the cascading, mud and relatively coarse shelf and upper canyon sediments were the major component of the mass flux. Conversely, advection of fine material via nepheloid layers dominated down-slope fluxes during pre- and post-cascading. The resulting change in grain-size affected the flux of mineral-bound terrigenous OC, indicating that the down-canyon transport of land-derived OM did not occur as bulk but rather its composition is driven by sediment sorting associated with different transport mechanisms. Both surface sediments and sediment trap samples indicated that CdC canyon is well connected to the GoL terrigenous dispersal system. Conversely, our results suggest an overall limited influence of land-derived OM in LD canyon. In spite of the reduced fluvial nutrient supply, a significant pulsed input of modern marine OM was observed in April 2005 at the end of the cascading period. Both intense mixing and lack of strong water column stratification likely played a key role allowing for both diffusion of nutrients-rich waters into the euphotic zone and efficient vertical sink of marine OC. On its way toward the seafloor, this fresh pool of OC interacted with the dense plume overflowing off the shelf, becoming part of the material laterally advected to the slope. Abstract: Two different methods, fluorescent tracers and vertical sand traps, were simultaneously used to carry out an aeolian sediment transport study designed to test the goodness of fluorescent tracers in aeolian environments. Field experiments were performed in a nebkha field close to Famara beach at Lanzarote Island (Canary Islands, Spain) in a sector where the dunes were between 0.5 and 0.8m height and 1–2m wide and the vegetal cover was approximately 22%. In this dune field the sediment supply comes from Famara beach and is blown by trade winds toward the south, where the vegetation acts as natural sediment traps. Wind data were obtained by means of four Aanderaa wind speed sensors and one Aanderaa vane, all them distributed in a vertical array from 0.1 to 4m height for 27h. The average velocity at 1m height during the experiment was 5.26ms−1 with the wind direction from the north. The tracer was under wind influence for 90min at midday. During this period two series of sand traps (T1 and T2) N, S, E and W oriented were used. Resultant transport rates were 0.0131 and 0.0184kgm−1 min−1 respectively. Tracer collection was performed with a sticky tape to sample only surface sediments. Tagged grains were visually counted under UV light. The transport rate was computed from the centroid displacement, that moved 0.875m southwards, and the depth of the active layer considered was the size of one single grain. Taking into account these data the transport rate was 0.0072kgm−1 min−1. The discrepancy in results between both methods is related to several factors, such as the thickness of the active layer and the grain size difference between the tagged and the native material.
