Scientific debates surrounding feminism in the 21st century increasingly call for mainstream feminism to include the voices of non-white women, as well as looking also at the work and expressions of feminism taking place in the Global South. While progress has been made in the United States in acknowledging the work and demands of non-white feminism, Europe lags behind in recognizing and amplifying the feminist contributions and demands of its largest non-migrant ethnic minority, the Roma. This article presents findings from qualitative fieldwork conducted with 23 Romani women and young adults organized in civic organizations across Spain, exploring how they understand and experience feminism. Despite working towards gender equality among Romani men and women, as well as equality between Romani and nonRomani women, many do not identify with dominant representations of feminism. Our results highlight three key elements of what these women would claim as Romani feminism: the role of men as allies, claiming freedom as women as a central aspect of Roma cultural identity, and advocating for a feminism that promotes and safeguards the idea of equality of differences. The situation of oppression and discrimination of Roma people is a fact that can be observed in many research studies. This is in conjunction with segregation and unequal educational conditions for Roma students, which do not seem to improve despite economic investment and specific intervention programmes. We understand that these situations are ever-present and structural in our society and that they segregate and exclude and become cultural, social and educational barriers for Roma students to successfully continue their academic careers until they reach university. The aim of this study was to understand the views of Roma students at a university in the south of Spain regarding the factors that had enabled them to overcome the initial difficulties they had faced during primary and secondary education, and which had acted as protective factors against educational exclusion. We have included quantitative data through the use of questionnaires, and qualitative data through the use of interviews. The results suggest that these factors are diverse, intersecting and are not mutually exclusive. Family and teacher support and the presence of a non-segregated environment, as well as personal motivation and self-awareness, are key factors. A relevant finding has been the flexibility of cultural reference models that have allowed them to navigate the exclusionary structures of the school. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inspired by W. E. B. Du Bois's notion of double consciousness, Yeison F. García López assumes multiple identities: Afro-Colombian and Afro-Spanish. This multiplicity allows García López to assert a politically active citizenship, articulated through his migrant journey, his Afro-descendant and Colombian heritage, and his connection with Madrid society. This conversation delves into how García López's body of work as a poet, theorist, activist, and cultural agent contributes to an emerging Spanish, global, and transatlantic LatinX Latinity (LatinXness) from the Spanish capital. Overall, García López's efforts shine a spotlight on Spain's present-day plurality, highlighting the contributions of Africans and Afro-descendant people. He establishes connections among migrant communities of Latin American, Afro-descendant, and Asian origin as well as migrants from Eastern Europe descent, and Roma people and subverts Eurocentrism, colonialism, and white supremacy. García López's publications and cultural initiatives serve as a platform to amplify the voices of Madrid's migrant and racialized people, promoting culture as a form of resistance, healing, and empowerment. The article analyzes Anti-Romani sentiment and strategies to combat it at a multilevel level in Europe, Spain, and the Basque Country. It highlights the commitment of the European Parliament in 2017 with the resolution on the fundamental rights of Roma communities in the European Union. It focuses on the progress in Spain through the State Pact against Anti-Romani sentiment and reflects on the processes of fighting against anti-Romani sentiment in the Basque Country, paying attention to the intersection between ethnicity and gender. The text talks about anti-Romani sentiment in Spain, especially during Franco's regime and in the present day. Measures have been taken at the European and state levels to combat Anti-Romani sentiment, such as the approval of a State Pact against Anti-Romani sentiment and the inclusion of it as a hate crime in the Penal Code. In the Basque Country, a study has been conducted revealing discriminatory attitudes towards Roma people in areas such as housing and employment. The article reports on the First International Congress on Gender Antigypsyism that took place in Bilbao in October 2022. During the congress, the commitment to move towards a "Basque pact against anti-Romaniism" and the promotion of a comprehensive Basque law on equal treatment and non-discrimination were announced. The article highlights the importance of addressing anti-Romani sentiment from an intersectional perspective and the need for the participation of the Roma associative movement and the commitment of institutions in the fight against this form of racial oppression. For over five centuries the Gitanos/Calé of Spain have shown a marked preference for marrying within their ethnocultural community. In the last decades, however, various Gitano groups have experienced a rise in intermarriage that is transforming their families, their identities and their interactions with mainstream society. This paper analyzes this historical transformation in an area of Andalusia that shows some of the highest concentrations of Romani people in Western Europe. Ethnographic and historical-demographic research allowed the reconstitution of 3,336 Gitano families formed from 1900 to 2006. Of these 421 (12,6%) were mixed. This rate increased to over 25% in the 2000s, and in some localities about half of the recent Gitano marriages were mixed. Three major findings emerge from this case study. Firstly, the local environment plays a key role in intermarriage. Local history generated different intercultural environments and relationships in adjacent municipalities, leading to diverse levels of intermarriage. Secondly, more Gitanas are marrying non-Gitano men than vice versa. Since 1990 Gitanas made 60% of all mixed unions. Thirdly, Gitanas in mixed marriages tend to marry later and to have fewer children than those in endogamous unions. Thus, these women may have been trailblazers in the fertility transitions of Gitano women. The paper hypothesizes that the incorporation of the Gitano/Calé people into the institutions of the Welfare State has favored interactions across ethnic boundaries, reduced social distance, and facilitated intermarriage. Previous research has highlighted different factors that limit educational success and continuity in Roma children and young adults, outlining both those linked to cultural identity and those derived from structural racism, which also affect the education system. The aim of this study is to understand how gender influences education for Roma women in Spain and to identify possible changes and/or continuities for formal education and motherhood in their discourses. This research is based on a qualitative methodology, encompassing 19 interviews with Roma women aged between 18 and 67 and residents in the province of Alicante, Spain. The results show that Roma women consider education as something relevant and should not be abandoned. Success at school is not understood as an element of assimilation, nor as something incompatible with Roma identity. Quite the opposite, studying is perceived as a strategy to obtain a better job in the future, but also as a project for personal development and growth, as well as an empowerment tool, both inside and outside the community. Nonetheless, educational continuity requires not only changes in its assessment by the Roma community, but also interventions on the structural barriers that prevent balancing life and studies when a woman is already a mother. One of the many stereotypes included in the generally negative – occasionally Romantic – representations and discourses that have burdened the Romani people is the alleged existence of a natural link between the 'Gypsy' way of life and anarchism. This article studies the extent of an actual historical relationship between anarchism as a political worldview and the 'Gypsy'-Roma ethnic status beyond reductionist stereotypes. It investigates, on the one hand, the agency of Romani subjects in the labour movement and anarchism by means of a case study of Spain in the interwar years, and, on the other, it examines the cases of a number of European emigrants who chose to closely link anarchism as a political option to a Romani identity in their struggle against capitalism and fascism. Both sets of case studies are used to reflect on the political nature of racial-ethnic identity constructions, to question the dilemmas of cultural appropriation and to propose a dense analysis that reveals the historicity of identities of this type. The Romani people are a minority that has been historically excluded, neglected, and persecuted in the different countries where they are settled, especially if we consider the context of their arrival in Europe and the colonization processes developed by European nations. Thus, this paper sheds light on how the Romani communities have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic from the communication and health perspective and provides a critical view of the abovementioned processes. We discuss theoretically how these ethnicities are crossed by multiple oppressions that place them in an unequal situation and the role of communication in their social inclusion or the maintenance of their exclusion. We highlight how their invisibility and how historical stereotypes were highlighted during the pandemic, deepening the unequal relations. From a critical perspective on discursive relations, we analyzed two journalistic reports from 2020, the local newspaper O Popular in Brazil and the national newspaper ABC in Spain. Some results suggest that the Romani population has been somewhat held accountable for disseminating the virus. Moreover, they seem to have been silenced as subjects capable of articulating and reflecting on their conditions and situations in the pandemic context, showing similarities in the portrayal of the Romani people in the Ibero-American context. Roma people in Spain face situations of high deprivation, including high unemployment and early school leaving rates. The strategies to address this situation point to education as the means to overcome poverty and social exclusion. Although efforts have been made within compulsory education, scarce attention has been given to their performance once in higher education. Although young Roma people are reaching higher education more often than their parents, once at university they face specific barriers that hinder their opportunities. Using a mixed-methods approach, UNIROMA analyses those difficulties and formulates orientations to overcome them, thereby contributing to increasing the university graduation rates of Roma students. This paper presents the results of the quantitative fieldwork, consisting of an online questionnaire administered from May to July of 2020 to Roma students enrolled in Spanish universities. In the results, three main profiles were identified: traditional students, young students with other commitments (job and/or family responsibilities) and mature students. The results, concordant with research on other minority groups and higher education, provide evidence of the barriers that Roma students face in university due to the intersectionality of multiple factors of discrimination, namely, belonging to an ethnic minority and being more frequently first-generation, low SES and non-traditional students. The article analyzes the book "Dreams and Shadows about the Gypsies. The current state of historical racism" by Ismael Cortés, which addresses the exclusion and marginalization faced by the Roma in Spain. The importance of recognizing anti-Romani sentiment as a specific form of racism is highlighted, and how it has been perpetuated throughout history is examined. Additionally, the representation of the Romani in Spanish cinema is analyzed, as well as how certain political discourses have contributed to their criminalization. Drawing on ethnographic material from Gitanos of Spain and current EU Roma integration policies, we explore the contemporary construction of the Roma ethnic group category as a specific type of "stranger" in the context of the European neoliberal culture complex. Our argument is that this classificatory reconstruction can be seen to work as a cultural prerequisite for the socio-political shaping and management of the Roma as a neoliberal "stable stranger." This new stranger is based on constructing Roma as a potential unused labor pool and as recent immigrants, in contrast to the Gitanos' own ideology and locally grounded identity of self-employment and anti-proletarianism. The paradoxical consequence of the integration policies, therefore, is the potential pushing of the Gitanos further away from Spanish mainstream society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims to show that Roma people in Spain are targeted for discrimination because of perceptions about their religious beliefs, as well as for reasons linked to their socio-economic status. Data on the Spanish Roma population have been, used and analysis reveals that Evangelical Roma people have a higher probability of perceiving discrimination than those Roma who profess the majority religion in Spain, that is, Catholicism, once other socio-economic and demographic factors are controlled for. We recommend that this manifested higher degree of discrimination towards Evangelical Roma should be addressed by Spanish institutions and organizations promoting the rights of ethnic minorities by considering intersectional discrimination which allows for a more respectful and egalitarian approach to the diversity of Roma people. I analyse the concept of Anti-Gypsyism, its political discursive use and the dialectic produced and championed by people and/or entities self-designated as political activist Roma. The concept of Anti-Gypsyism is present in the new version of the struggles and demands of Roma people, inside and outside Spain. The term appears in scientific articles, in the media and in statements from both specific people and public and private entities and institutions. And, in all of them, without exception, it is presented as the battering ram used to rename the cause that justi - fies and maintains the resistance of Roma people against those who are not, generating the political discourse of anti-Antigypsyism that leads me to conclude about its potentiality to influence political action. The article analyzes the solutions used to resolve the housing problem of Roma people since the mid-twentieth century in cities of northwestern Spain. Its interest lies in a common trajectory and in various situations and responses, which have not been successful. We use a geographical methodology based on the diachronic approach, the dialectical method between the quantitative and qualitative, the comparative, and the consideration of habitat as an expressive element of spatial relations in the landscape. Among its main results, this paper interprets a cross-sectional reading of urbanism and architecture in the so-called nogo zones incorporating the necessary nuances to avoid simplistic generalizations. These explain different rhythms and experiences in the same development towards typical housing, emphasizing the substantive weight of territorial variables, the regional context, and local factors beyond political decisions. While Spain was conquering new lands in the Americas, foreigners arrived into their own--the Gitanos. Spain imposed a double-standard whereby their crossing into new, occupied, territory was legitimate, but the entry of others into Spanish territory was not. I compare and contrast these historically parallel movements of people using Deleuze and Guattari's taxonomy of movement (what they refer to as nomadology). I conclude that the double-standard of movement was due to differences of power between these two groups, understood in terms of material conditions, a prototypical "racial contract," and differences in the relationship to land and space. This history and analysis of colonial Spain is a critical start for Latin American postcolonial theory; it gives us a framework to study philosophies of migration and nomadism; and finally, it introduces the Gitanos (and Roma in general) as an important population to complicate critical race theory or theories of ethnicity. Using data from the family and genealogical reconstitutions of the Gitano population of 22 contiguous localities in eastern Andalusia, Spain, this study analysed the intensity, structure and historical evolution of consanguinity in 3056 couples formed from 1925 to 2006. Of these unions, 54.8% were consanguineous, and 28.7% involved relatives up to and including second cousins, resulting in a mean coefficient of inbreeding up to the third degree α3 = 12.4 × 10−3. The rest of the consanguineous unions (26.1% of all) involved more-distant relatives, such as third cousins, fourth cousins and so forth. When all consanguinity degrees found in the genealogical reconstitution were considered, the total mean coefficient of inbreeding was αt = 14.8 × 10−3. The merging of families and pedigrees generated a complex genealogical network with many inbreeding loops and important founder effects. This network revealed a high rate (62%) of Multiple Consanguineous Marriages (MCMs) in which second and subsequent consanguineous ties increased inbreeding levels by a fifth (20.5%). The accumulation of multiple degrees of distant relatedness, many of which had little social or biological importance, has contributed to a significant increase in inbreeding rates. Among Gitano people, intra-family marriages have remained common in the last decades, in sharp contrast to other Spanish populations. Hence the highest rates of close consanguinity (34%) and inbreeding (α3 = 14.6 × 10−3) were found in the 1960s, the decade that saw the onset of Spain's socioeconomic modernization, internationalization and massive migration. These are among the highest rates of inbreeding found in any European population, including the most endogamous Spanish isolates. They reveal marriage strategies not constrained primarily by geographical barriers, but by ethnocultural separation. Interestingly, in recent decades mixed marriages have been increasing rapidly in this minority, although they are compatible with high rates of consanguinity. 'Spain is different', the Spanish tourist board famously declared in the 1960s as part of its strategy to attract mass tourism to the country. The campaign played a key role in opening up Spain's economy during the later years of Franco's regime – the so-called apertura – following two decades of autarchic rule that had left the country geopolitically isolated. As the slogan suggested, however, exoticism was a key part of Spain's nation-branding. Ideas of Spanish difference were now marketed for their tourist appeal, with images of gypsies and flamenco joined by sizzling beaches and ice-cold sangria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article has as main objective to discover where were Spanish dots before becoming for flamenco and find their traces in the commerce of Spain. To do this the research we will focus on the formation of the Spanish nation between 1750 and 1847. The main method of research has been the reading of images and graphic material related to gypsies, ballet and flamenco. We were immersed in the history, the etymology and semiotics of the word to find the source of the polka dots in the print of the typical flamenco dress in Spain. In the beginnings of flamenco, it was not uncommon to see a flamenco dressed with dots. The gypsy wore skirts plain or with other prints such as paintings vichy. To find the reason of this event we have focused on the evolution of the textile industry which has led us to the evolution of the rules of tariffs in the customs and this is how we were able to see that theyhad vetoed the entrance to the trade in Spain, considered as foreigners since 1792 intermittently until 1841. During that time, the noun acquired negative connotations in Spain, assimilating to sin or defect. Objectives: This study aims to review the published literature on the health of the Roma population in Spain, particularly that which describes health interventions and outcomes. Design: A scoping review of published articles/reports on Roma population health was carried out in Spain for publications between 2002 and 2014. Articles in Spanish or English were identified from Pubmed, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, Scielo, IBECS, MEDES, Dialnet, Index Foundation, a database of theses and Google Scholar. After an initial assessment of the article title and summary, genetic studies, editorials, reviews and grey literature with incomplete data were excluded. Two independent researchers followed a protocol to analyze the selected papers in terms of general information, methodology, themes, and results or conclusions. Results: Forty studies were selected for inclusion, primarily located through PubMed and Google Scholar. Most of the papers were scientific articles, published after 2007 in Spanish scientific journals (70.0%) followed by institutional reports (20.0%). The main language was Spanish (84.2%). The studies were carried out mainly by public institutions (35.0%) or universities (22.5%). Most (67.5%) followed a descriptive design and nearly half (47.5%) were concerned only with the Roma population. The main thematic areas were: child health (25%), infectious diseases (25%), health and social education context (20%), perceived health and lifestyle (15%), sexual and reproductive health (7,5%) and health services use (7,5%). We found seven intervention studies related to health, educational environment, or social services. Conclusions: There are few publications related to the health of the Roma community in Spain and even fewer related to health interventions and outcomes. Those that are available have focused on areas such as child health or infectious disease outbreaks. It is important to promote health interventions in Roma communities and longitudinal studies that include a comprehensive vision and account for the social determinants of health. The article explores right to education for Romanies as a first step to inclusion in Italy and compares Italy's legal framework on the protection of ethnicity to that of Spain and France. Topics discussed are importance of the right to education to eradicating discrimination against Romanies, denial of human rights in the Nuremberg Trials under fascism, human rights protection under Italian Constitution, discrimination in Italy's educational system and approach of Spain and France to migration.

Alliances are a political opportunity that reinforce the claims made by different players in the political sphere. However, the literature on the political participation of immigrants pays little attention to the formation of alliances and their effects on the interaction between immigrants and institutional actors, especially under circumstances of politicization. This article aims to explain the emergence of alliances between political parties and immigrant organizations when immigration is politicized locally. I argue that the need to legitimize the political parties’ position on the politicization guide their alliances with immigrants. Using qualitative methods, I analyse the emergence of alliances in the anti-Romanian-Roma campaign in Badalona and the burka ban in Lleida, both in Catalonia, Spain. A common characteristic of Roma as a cultural group is that they do not allow their elderly to die alone. Nevertheless, rooted in a mainstream cultural perspective of health provision services, public institutions usually do not allow Roma people to be with their loved ones in their last moments. Following the communicative methodology, we conducted a communicative case study on the death of the most relevant female Roma leader in Catalonia. She was accompanied by more than two hundred family members and friends in her room and corridor at an important hospital in Barcelona. We performed our research in the 2 years following her death to obtain the reflections of the Roma members involved. These reflections revealed the egalitarian dialogue forged between these Roma members and the hospital personnel, which enabled the former to embrace their culture and support their loved ones before death. Because this dialogue was possible and fruitful, the acknowledgment of cultural diversity and the improvement of the quality of services offered to Roma might also be possible in other health institutions. In the following paper we will discuss about the situation of the Romanian gypsies living in Spain and the main problems involved by their presence in this country. We will analyze the causes that made them emigrate to Spain, together with a historical analysis of this process, the living conditions they have (housing, employment, education...). Also, we will present the social problems they suffer because of their particular culture, other than Spanish, the main settlements where they chosen to live in Spain and social acceptance from the point of view of the Spanish population. The present article is the direct result of a research program that was developed almost two years ago by the Research Center for Regional Development and European Integration of the University of Bucharest, part of a larger research program regarding the ethnic minorities of Romania. The main important aspect of this research is the fact that we used two target groups interviewed both in Romania and Spain and also, we used official information regarding Romanian gypsy located actually on Spanish territory, according with the official Spanish census. This way we managed to gather a large quantity of information and to provide to the reader a closer to reality image of the status of Romanian gypsy presently living inside Spanish border. Also, the novelty brought by this research is the fact that we tried to present the social and integration problems encountered by the Romanian gypsies located in the cities or villages of Spain. This article collects a version of the current moment of tension, change and emergence of feminine individuality among gypsy women from Zaragoza. It was based on the premise that the convergence of personal attributes such as identity and gender (both key concepts of the individual construction) were a challenge to the patriarchal structure -ethnic identity- understanding that when women become aware of herself -gender identity- the tension between the traditional and the modern paradigm emerges. The qualitative and biographical approach (based on narrative and conversation, participant observation and qualitative analysis based on grounded theory) has allowed us to analyze from two key dimensions, the psychological and the contextual, the sequential introspective path through which they advance (refletion-decision-action) and the vital trajectories that are conforming when trying to fit personal growth with the non-affectation of the patriarchal gypsy structure its culture and its system of values and mandates. Background: With an explicit focus on Roma women in Spain (Kale/Spanish Gypsies), this study aims to integrate key informants' opinions about the main actions needed to improve primary health care services' and professionals' responses to Roma women in an Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) situation. Methods: Concept mapping study. A total of 50 (brainstorming phase), 36 (sorting and rating phase) and 16 (interpretation phase) participants from Roma civil society groups, primary health care professionals and other related stakeholders (social services, academic experts and other IPV NGOs representatives) from different cities in Spain were involved in the different study phases. Results: Among the 55 action proposals generated, ten priority actions were identified through consensus as most important for improving primary health care's response to Romani women in an IPV situation, and these included primary, secondary and tertiary prevention activities. Conclusion: Results indicated that efforts to address this challenge should take an integrated approach that reinforces the primary health care response to IPV in general, while also promoting more specific actions to address barriers to access that affect all Roma women and those who experience IPV in particular. The Romani cultural minority living in Spain has cultural values and beliefs, religious/spiritual expressions and a particular vision of death. The relationship between these aspects and health is unknown. A sample of 150 people responded to a socio-demographic questionnaire and well-being measures of religious/spiritual experience, paranormal beliefs and fear of death. Age, a negative sense of life, fear of the death of others, being a woman and having low paranormal beliefs have a negative impact on health. Results allow for extending the relationships found in the general population to the Romani population as well. The novelty is that, in the latter, paranormal beliefs protect against disease. Additionally, fear of the death of others damages health more than fear of one's own death. These results make sense in the context of the Romani culture and religion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multicultural ideology proposes that group memberships should be not just acknowledged but also valued in order to accommodate diversity and attain equality. In three studies conducted in Spain and Canada we analyzed, using different measures, the relationship between multicultural ideology on the one hand and prejudice, support for social policies, and motivation for social change on the other hand. In Spain we focused on responses to Gitanos (Spanish Roma) and, in Canada, on First Nations people. Results showed that multicultural ideology was related in both cases to lower prejudice and higher support for social policies to support the minority group and motivation for social change. The internal motivation to control prejudice was an important mediator of this relationship in both countries. In contrast, the way in which social identities are represented played a different role as a function of country: whereas a dual identity representation played a mediating role in Canada, a common identity representation was the mediator in Spain. These results support the importance of valuing cultural diversity to harmonize intergroup relations and to reduce inequalities between majorities and minority groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Romas are one of the largest minority groups in Spain and Europe, but no specific data on children's socioemotional learning are available. Our goal was to determine the level of socioe- motional knowledge of a group of 4- and 5-year-old Roma children and to implement an intervention program at school. Forty-three Roma children participated (experimental: TV = 21; control: N = 22). We implemented the intervention program Thinking emotions (M. Giménez-Dasí, M. Fernández-Sánchez, & M.-F. Daniel, 2013a). This program is based on Philosophy for Children (M. Lipman, A. M. Sharp, & F. S. Oscanyan, 1980) and aims to promote emotion knowledge, regulation strategies, and social competencies through peer-to-peer dialogue. Pre- and posttest measures were taken. Abstract Introduction Negative organ donation rates among the Gypsies is much higher than that of any other social group in Spain. However, living donation rates have not been raised much in this social group, despite the existence of several Gypsy patients on the waiting list for transplantation. Objective To analyze the attitude toward related living donation among the Gypsy population who reside in Spain. Methods This type of study is an observational sociological study. The study consisted of the adult Gypsy population residing in Spain, and a random sampling of 230 adult gypsies was conducted. Attitude questionnaires for live donation, both hepatic PCID-DVH-Ríos and renal PCID-DVR-Ríos, were used, and random selection was based on stratification. Questionnaires were self-administered and completed anonymously. Student t test, χ2, Fisher, and a logistic regression analysis were used. Results A sample of 206 Gypsies (52% women) with a mean age of 34 years is obtained. Seventy-two percent (n = 150) would donate an organ to a relative in life, 8% (n = 16) would not donate it, and 20% (n = 41) have doubts. Respondents with a favorable attitude toward living donation presented a more favorable attitude toward cadaveric organ donation (55% vs 0%, P <.001). The attitude toward living kidney donation was more favorable (81% in favor) than toward living liver donation (P <.001). Conclusions The Gypsy ethnic group is sensitized to live donor transplantation. The family and cultural roots of Gypsy people could condition this favorable attitude, a fact to be taken into account to sensitize this social group and promote donation campaigns with the aim of increasing donation rates. The zambra is a genre and contest of flamenco unique to the Gitano (Gypsy) neighbourhood of : aero monte (Granada), which throughout its historical development has been closely intertwined with tourism. Framed by recent musical and social change in the zambra, this article examines debates regarding tourism, authenticity, and local heritage in Sacromonte. Previous research has focused on the economic and institutional dimensions of flamenco tourism with little consideration of local discourses. This article interrogates a static notion of "staged authenticity", instead focusing on the dynamic and contested relationship between music and tourism in the context of local musical practice. This article aims to shed light on the semiotic possibilities of Victorian theatre as well as uncovering hidden substrata of the reception of the Cassandra myth in England. Nineteenth-century refigurations of Cassandra manifested ambivalent contemporary attitudes towards women and knowledge. Thus, Cassandra paralleled prevailing conceptions of social stereotypes on the periphery and was equated with false prophets, fortune-tellers, mendicants, witches, and most important for this article, gipsies. An intertextual analysis of comic refigurations of the myth and stage adaptations of Miguel de Cervantes' La gitanilla (The Little Gipsy) allow us to understand how Priam's daughter became Cassandra the gipsy both in highbrow and popular reworkings of the myth in the Victorian period. As shall be demonstrated, the aesthetic links between Cassandra and the Spanish gipsy respond to cultural and political paradigms which question the association between women and knowledge. The attempt of this paper is to contribute to the ethnology about Gypsies, and social anthropology in general for present and future of studies on Gypsies. The article makes an analysis of the social and familiar organization of the Catalan Gypsies (Calós) of Mataro and presents some clues of research and conceptual orientations. The flexible functioning of bilateral kinship networks, the categorizations in kinship terminology and anthroponymy, the forms of individual and family nomination, and the alliance systems provide critical knowledge regarding genuine principles and categories with explanatory power of anthropology in general. Caló (also known as Romanó) is the mixed speech that Spanish Gitanos developed by combining a Romani lexicon with Spanish morphosyntax (Catalan or Basque in the regional varieties). For two centuries, Caló has been portrayed as being in a terminal state, but there is a lack of data on the knowledge and use of Caló by Gitano speakers. To begin filling this void, we developed a specific questionnaire that includes 355 key Caló words with their Spanish translations, and we applied it to an intentional sample of 68 Gitanos and Gitanas in Andalusia. Our informants recognised 129 words on average, a knowledge greater but also more varied than expected. Among the younger generations, however, few remembered more than 80 words. Caló is not learned by children as a mother tongue, nor considered a complete language. In this article we offer a model of levels of knowledge of the Caló lexicon by Gitano speakers that can be tested in other regions. We also advance a tentative proposal of three main social environments in which Caló is learned, and the social and cultural relations that predominate in each of them. Additionally, we list the words that are known by a majority of speakers and the semantic fields to which they belong, and provide some examples of the mixed discourses the informants produced when prompted with the terms from the questionnaire. This paper analyzes public policies implemented to improve shanty towns in Spain. In this country, most of the shanty towns are inhabited by gypsy families in a situation of a multiple social exclusion. It is hypothesized that the implementation of appropriate public policies boosts the social inclusion of this population. The relocation of the gypsy slum of Culleredo (Galicia, Spain) has been analyzed where since 1985 the institutions have designed policies that show very promising results. It has been tested the hypothesis by conducting a questionnaire drove to people from different sectors affected by this action. A quantitative analysis has been performed; qualitative information extracted from face to face questionnaires was also incorporated. The study has identified factors that explain those different results in terms of the policies. The first objective of this study was to investigate whether police violence is more tolerated when the victim is a member of a social minority (e.g., Moroccan immigrants and Romanian Gypsies in Spain) than when the victim is a member of the social majority (e.g., Spaniards). The second objective was to use Schwartz value theory to examine the moderating role of values on attitudes towards tolerance of police violence. The participants were 207 sociology and social work students from a public university in Madrid. Overall, in this study, police violence was more accepted when the victim was a member of a social minority; F(2, 206) = 77.91, p = .001, ηp 2 = 0.433, and in general, values moderated this acceptance. Thus, greater adherence to the conservation and self-promotion values subsystems would strengthen support for police violence towards a social minority member. Roma, today perceived as the most numerous European minority, face marginalisation and exclusion. Education is considered to be one of the focal points for improvement, and numerous studies have analysed and reported on the educational situation of Roma. Several studies have argued that Romani cultural values are not compatible with institutional schooling and that Romani families perceive schools as an alien institution. Other studies have drawn upon cultural–ecological theory (CE theory), developed by Ogbu and colleagues, and argue that the Romani cultural frame of reference is oppositional to academic success and thus suggest that successful Romani students distance themselves from Romani culture. The paper discusses the application of CE theory in the context of the academic discourse about the educational achievement of Romani students. Drawing on interviews with Spanish Romani university students, the paper argues that Romani students themselves challenge the assumption that educational success leads to cultural alienation. In 1783, the King of Spain Carlos III enacted the last Royal Order for the control and assimilation of Gitanos or Calé. The law required that local authorities listed the Gitanos living in their counties. The resulting census is the most important document on the Spanish Romani written during the ancien régime. Unfortunately, its data has never been studied in depth. This paper analyzes the surnames of the 12,037 Gitano persons identified in the census and finds 567 different heritable family names. Interestingly, 10% of these surnames identified 75% of the Gitano population. The analysis shows that Gitanos already had the same names they have today, and that it is possible to trace personal genealogies linking Gitano people from this census with people alive now, some fourteen generations later. Gitano surnames were all Hispanic and many of them of aristocratic origin. Some were common to all Gitano groups, but most followed regional patterns and were differentiated by region and even by province. Baptism, mixed marriages, and imitation of neighbors were the most likely sources for the adoption of these surnames. Gitanos also used personal and family nicknames in their communities, but their official names were a crucial part of their personal and collective identity. Resistance, opposition, and contrasting cultural strategies should not ignore the hybridizing and creative adaptations of the Romani peoples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Gypsy population is one of the groups that are most discriminated against in Spain. In this research, we studied the impact of the visit to the exhibition Vidas Gitanas (Gypsy Lives) on undergraduate students' prejudice towards Gypsies. This exhibition was organized with the aim of providing a realistic vision of this population and its culture and to alleviate the lack of knowledge about the reality of Gypsies. In this study 91 participants were exposed to one of two different conditions: visiting the exhibition or control group. Participants showed a better evaluation of Gypsies after visiting the exposition than before. Moreover, compared to the control group, participants who visited the exhibition showed a better evaluation and a greater inclusion of Gypsies within the superordinate social category "Spaniards".
