This article examines storytelling events for children in a library and a children's bookstore in which storytellers are accompanied by sign language interpreters. The result is that both hearing and Deaf children participate in a literacy event in which storyteller and interpreter produce a multilingual, multimodal and multimedial narrative. Using tools derived from the ethnography of communication, social semiotics and multimodal interactional analysis we build a model to examine that this discursive interrelationship between storyteller and interpreter has for hearing and Deaf children's literary experience in the event. We postulate a continuum of six configurations (three for hearing children and three for Deaf children) in which the interpreter-storyteller relationship may add little to enhance or even disturb children's narrative experience. In the conclusions we discuss possible alternative designs that would reduce Deaf children's asymmetrical standing in the event.

The aim of this article is to analyse the profitability of ski resorts in Spain and identify its associated determining factors in order to verify whether these are economically sustainable taking into account the internal and external aspects affecting them. To this end, the article first addresses the importance of snow tourism in Spain, before going on to analyse the influence that climate change is having on this type of tourism. A series of economic and structural ratios are then applied to the financial statements of ski resorts in Spain with the aim of establishing a base diagnosis for their situation. Finally, a regression model is estimated, the results of which reveal the more profitable ski resorts at the economic level to be those with the largest stations, a direct relationship being observed between profitability and size. The results also confirm the negative consequences of high indebtedness and the non-significant effects of using snowmaking systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses the out of school routines of a group of 'literature-devoted' children of the city of Madrid (Spain). The children and families were recruited for the study at a library, a children's bookstore and a puppet show in a park. Participants provided information on their weekly routines through several procedures: surveys, photographs of their daily lives, interviews based on the photographs and interviews with parents. We develop a spatially based model that allows us to identify four styles of activity in children's out of school lives: homebound children, non-scheduled children, outdoor and scheduled children, and fully scheduled children. Our results suggest that there is significant diversity in the ways in which children's after-school time is organized, even within a middle-class and socially homogeneous sample as the one in this study. Also, the range of activities our participants engage in seems to contradict current portraits of Western urban children's lives as constrained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction and Objectives: Although cardiologists frequently assist patients who suffer damage from smoking, the degree of training they receive to manage this problem during their residency is unknown. Because of this, we’d proposed to ­evaluate the preferences and practices of cardiology residents for smoking cessation of the attending patients., Materials and Methods: Closed, prefixed, voluntary and anonymous survey among doctors who carried out the specialty of cardiology in 5 countries of Latin America and Spain., Results: 716 residents were surveyed; 62.4% from Argentina, 19% from Mexico, 6.8% from Spain, 6.7% from Chile, 3.2% from Uruguay, and 1.9% from Paraguay. When asked about the importance they assigned to this problem (using a scale of 1-10), 85.8% assigned this question a score of 8 or higher. While 80.5% of the participants expressed giving short anti-tobacco advice routinely, only 27.7% used pharmacological therapy for this purpose. Among those who did not use pharmacological therapy, 58.3% said that the reason was not being familiar with the treatments; 62.9% of the surveyed said they had not received any type of training in this problem. Those residents who received some type of training reported feeling more prepared for this (p < 0.0001)., Conclusion: We found that cardiology residents have a low knowledge of pharmacological treatment and relatively low confidence to provide assistance in smoking cessation. This topic should be included in the training of future cardiologists in order to achieve a more comprehensive cardiovascular prevention.
