The performance of getting up from the floor from a supine position (Supine-to-Stand task, STS) can be considered a milestone in motor development and a potential indicator of motor competence in global terms. However, the knowledge about the performance of STS task and anthropometric characteristics is limited. This study examined the relationship between STS task performance and anthropometry in youth and the differences between the sexes, range age and nationality. Participants (n= 397; 45% girls) from Spain and Brazil (M= 9.13 years; SD= 3.79) had the following variables measured: timed STS task, mass, height, chronological age, hip, and waist circumference; Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist/Hip Ratio (WHR), Waist/Height Ratio (WHtR) were calculated. The analysis included ANOVA, Pearson's correlation test and Stepwise multiple regression analysis in four age groups. Age was the variable that obtained statistically significant associations with timed STS task in the youngest age group; the BMI in the children group corresponded to the second childhood phase, and the WHR and the WHtR in the oldest age group. The timed STS task decreased as age groups were increasingly older, confirming that timed STS is strongly associated with growth and maturation processes; there were little differences between sexes or nationalities. Background: Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a multifactorial, neurodevelopmental motor disorder that severely affects the activities of a child's daily life and classroom performance. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of suspected DCD in a sample of Spanish schoolchildren and its association with socio-demographic factors.Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study including a random sample of 460 children attending mainstream schools in northwest Spain in 2017. A Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire-European Spanish was used to evaluate suspected DCD prevalence. We performed multivariate logistic and linear regression analysis to determine the socio-demographic variables associated with suspected DCD and problematic motor coordination performance.Results: The prevalence of suspected DCD was 12.2%. According to the multivariate analysis, DCD symptoms were significantly associated with males (OR = 3.0), ages above 10 years old (OR = 5.0) and low participation in out-of-school physical activities (OR = 2.3). Preterm birth children were twice as likely to show suspected DCD, although this association was not statistically significant (OR = 2.1).Conclusions: A high percentage of Spanish schoolchildren are at risk for developing DCD. There is a strong connection between suspected DCD and socio-demographic factors. Protocols aimed to detect DCD and intervention programmes in classrooms designed to promote motor coordination skills need to take these factors into consideration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To accurately categorize the phenotypes of individuals with collagen VI-related dystrophies (COL6-RDs) during the first years of life to predict long-term motor function and pulmonary function, to provide phenotype-specific anticipatory care, and to improve clinical trial readiness., Methods: This retrospective, multicenter, international study analyzed the relationship of long-term motor and pulmonary function with the initial maximal motor ability achieved in individuals with COL6-RD., Results: We studied 119 patients with COL6-RD from Spain (n = 54) and the United States (n = 65). The early maximal motor milestones of ability to rise from the floor unassisted and ability to climb 4 steps without holding onto a railing demonstrated reliability in distinguishing between 3 COL6-RD phenotypic subgroups: (1) Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy, (2) intermediate COL6-RD, and (3) Bethlem myopathy. Long-term motor function and pulmonary function are strongly correlated with the maximal motor ability achieved during the first years of life. Maximal motor capacity can predict other disease-relevant events such as the age at loss of ambulation and the need for the initiation of nocturnal noninvasive ventilation., Conclusion: This work proposes a prospective phenotypic classification for COL6-RDs that will enable an accurate prediction of a patient's COL6-RD phenotype during the first years of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the stress suffered by medical residents as the result of being on call for 24 hours, from a multidimensional approach. Two groups of medical residents selected according to their work shift, participated in the study: one group (n = 40) was sleep-deprived after having been actively on-call for 24 hours, and another contrast group (n = 18) had performed a normal work day and were not sleep-deprived. All participants completed pre-post measures during a 24 h cycle. These were administered on both occasions at 8 am. The measures included HRV, cortisol, cognitive performance and transitory mood. The effect of the group x phase interaction was significant for all variables analysed, indicating that doctors in the 24h on-call shift group showed significant deterioration in all physiological, performance and mood indicators in comparison with the participants in the group not on call. These results suggest the need to review medical on-call systems, in order to reduce the stress load, which has a direct effect on working conditions., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Background: Mindfulness is an increasingly popular construct with promise in enhancing multiple positive health outcomes. Physical activity is an important behavior for enhancing overall health, but no Spanish language scale exists to test how mindfulness during physical activity may facilitate physical activity motivation or behavior. This study examined the validity of a Spanish adaption of a new scale, the State Mindfulness Scale for Physical Activity, to assess mindfulness during a specific experience of physical activity., Method: Spanish youths (N = 502) completed a cross-sectional survey of state mindfulness during physical activity and physical activity motivation regulations based on Self-Determination Theory., Results: A high-order model fit the data well and supports the use of one general state mindfulness factor or the use of separate subscales of mindfulness of mental (e.g., thoughts, emotions) and body (physical movement, muscles) aspects of the experience. Internal consistency reliability was good for the general scale and both sub-scales. The pattern of correlations with motivation regulations provides further support for construct validity with significant and positive correlations with self-determined forms of motivation and significant and negative correlations with external regulation and amotivation., Conclusions: Initial validity evidence is promising for the use of the adapted measure.

Introduction: The Taylor Complex Figure (TCF) was created as an alternate form for the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure. Although both figures are widely used, to date, it has not been carried out the normalization of the TCF for Spanish population., Aim: To normalize and standardize the TCF taking into account the sociodemographic characteristics of the Spanish population., Subjects and Methods: The present study is part of the Normacog Project. Seven hundred participants were recruited (18-90 years old), assessing the visuo-constructive ability and immediate visual memory by TCF. The effect of age, level of education and gender was analyzed on the performance of TCF and percentiles and scalar score for eight ranges of age and scalar score adjusted by the level of education., Results: Results showed a significant effect of age and level of education on the performance in copy and memory of TCF, whereas gender was not significant. Age and education explained from 25.3% to 35.7% of the variance of TCF performance. The older and less educated, the worse performance shown in TCF. Percentiles, scalar score for each range of age and scalar score adjusted by the level of education were obtained., Conclusion: Administration instructions, scoring and the normative data of the TCF are provided taking into account the Spanish sociodemographic characteristics for adults in our country.

Introduction: The Egen Klassifikation 2 Scale (EK2), expansion of the EK scale, assesses the functional capacity of people with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) that are in wheelchair phase. This version is more specific for SMA than its EK predecessor., Aim: To examine the validity and reliability of the Spanish version of the scale as a tool for measuring the functional capacity in patients with DMD and SMA who are in wheelchairs., Patients and Methods: First, a translation-back-translation into Spanish of the English version of the EK2 was performed; later, we studied the reliability of the translated version. For this, 39 patients, aged between 4 and 60, who were evaluated by two observers, were recruited. To evaluate the intra-observer consistency, two assessments by the same observer were performed, and the inter-observer third assessment was performed by a second observer., Results: The obtained values based on the total score of the scale items (sum EK2) reflect excellent intra- and inter-observer reliability, 0.993 and 0.988 respectively. Also, for each of the items, reliability was excellent except for one item in which it was good., Conclusions: The Spanish version of the EK2 scale is a valid and reliable instrument for the Spanish population as a tool for measuring the functional capacity in patients with SMA and DMD who are in wheelchairs.

Objective: To estimate the effect of sequence on response precision and response behavior in health valuation studies., Methods: Time trade-off (TTO) and paired comparison responses from six health valuation studies-four US, one Spanish, and one Dutch-were examined (22,225 respondents) to test whether task sequence influences response precision (e.g., rounding), response changes, and median response times. Each study used a computer-based instrument that randomized task sequence among a national sample of adults, age 18 years or older, from the general population., Results: For both TTO and paired comparisons, median response times decreased with sequence (i.e., learning), but tended to flatten after the first three tasks. Although the paired comparison evidence demonstrated that sequence had no effect on response precision, the frequency of rounded TTO responses (to either 1-year or 5-year units) increased with sequence., Conclusions: Based on these results, randomizing or reducing the number of paired comparison tasks does not appear to influence response precision; however, generalizability, practicality, and precautionary considerations remain. Reading fluency is one of the basic processes of learning to read. Children begin to develop fluency when they are able to form orthographic representations of words, which provide direct, smooth, and fast reading. Dyslexic children of transparent orthographic systems are mainly characterized by poor reading fluency (Cuetos & Suárez-Coalla 2009; Spinelli, De Luca, Di Filippo, Mancini, Martelli, & Zoccolotti, 2005; Wimmer, 1993). Therefore, the main problem for these children could be the difficulty in developing orthographic representations of the words they read. The aim of this study was to test the ability of dyslexic Spanish-speaking children (whose native language is Spanish) to develop orthographic representations and determine if the context helps them. For this, two experiments were conducted with a group of 100 children, 7-12 years of age. The groups were comprised of 20 dyslexics, 40 chronological age-matched controls and 40 reading level-matched controls. In the first experiment, eight unfamiliar words (four short and four long) were presented six times within the context of a story. In the second experiment, eight pseudowords were presented on a computer and the children had to read them aloud. In both experiments, the reading and articulation times of experimental and control stimuli were compared, before and after the training. Children without dyslexia showed a decrease of the influence of length of word on reading speed, indicating a lexical reading, while for dyslexic children, the influence of length remained unchanged. These results appeared when the stimuli were presented in the context of a story as well as when presented in isolation. In short, our results describe that dyslexic children of transparent orthographic systems have problems in developing orthographic representations of words.

Traditionally, research focussing on psychosocial factors in the construction industry has focused mainly on the negative aspects of health and on results such as occupational accidents. This study, however, focuses on the specific relationships among the different positive psychosocial factors shared by construction workers that could be responsible for occupational well-being and outcomes such as performance. The main objective of this study was to test whether personal resources predict self-rated job performance through job resources and work engagement. Following the predictions of Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory and the motivational process of the Job Demands-Resources Model, we expect that the relationship between personal resources and performance will be fully mediated by job resources and work engagement. The sample consists of 228 construction workers. Structural equation modelling supports the research model. Personal resources (i.e. self-efficacy, mental and emotional competences) play a predicting role in the perception of job resources (i.e. job control and supervisor social support), which in turn leads to work engagement and self-rated performance. This study emphasises the crucial role that personal resources play in determining how people perceive job resources by determining the levels of work engagement and, hence, their self-rated job performance. Background: The changes in recent decades in the training of medical student seem to agree that the educational model for professional skills is most appropriate. The virtual simulator translates skills acquired the operating room, in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Colima noticed the need to prepare the students of pregrade transferring surgical trainees' skills in basic laparoscopic activities that require a simple cognitive effort., Objective: The hypothesis in this study was to evaluate the acquisition of skills in laparoscopic simulator in students of pregrade., Methods: Educational research, analytical comparison, which was conducted within the activities of the program of Problem Based Learning in the program of Education and Surgical Technique, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Colima., Results: All participants in the simulator achieved a significantly better during the task one after three repetitions (p= 0.001). The evaluation of final students calcification, we observed significant differences in means being lower during the initial assessment (8.60 ± 0.76) compared to the end (8.96 ± 0.58) p= 0.001., Conclusions: The acquisition of skills in the simulator is longer but at the end is better than the acquisition of skills from the traditional method, showing that leads to the acquisition of skills that promote the transfer of skills to the surgical environment.

This study examines neuropsychological impairments associated with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and explores their association with related clinical factors. Sixty-eight women with CFS were assessed with a neuropsychological battery. Raw scores were adjusted for age and gender and were converted to T scores according to normative data extracted from a local sample of 250 healthy subjects. Neuropsychological dysfunction was calculated using summary impairment indexes (proportion of test scores outside normal limits-T score <40-for each cognitive domain). Finally, a linear regression was calculated to identify predictors of cognitive deficit, including intrinsic factors of the disease (level of fatigue and length of illness) and extrinsic factors (emotional factors, age, and education). Approximately 50% of scores showed impairment in attention and motor functioning, and nearly 40% showed impairment in speed information processing and executive functioning. Fatigue predicted attention and executive functioning impairment, and emotional factors predicted verbal memory dysfunction. According to our findings, cognitive dysfunction in CFS could be explained by pathophysiological processes of the disease. One implication of this would be the need to identify homogeneous subgroups of patients with CFS by taking into account common factors, which, in turn, would help to identify more specific cognitive profiles, which could then serve to implement appropriate therapeutic measures accordingly.

Objective: To study the characteristics of balance performance in a sample of patients with increasing postural instability after acquired brain injury (ABI) and to establish the clinical utility of a new computerized posturographic system (NedSVE/IBV)., Methods: This study included 108 patients with ABI divided into five groups from minimal to severe postural impairment. All patients were assessed with the NedSVE/IBV system and with traditional balance measures. Posturographic analyses included the modified clinical test of sensory interaction on balance, the limits of stability and the weight-shifting test. Sensitivity to detect changes and reproducibility were evaluated in 63 patients who were followed-up for 6 months and in 20 patients who were evaluated on two separate occasions during the same week, respectively., Results: The patients showed reduced stability limits, abnormal postural responses and an increased reliance on visual input with differences in intensity directly related to their degree of balance impairment. Posturographic study showed excellent convergent validity, reproducibility and sensitivity to detect changes., Conclusion: The data suggests that, regardless of the intensity of postural instability, there is a common mechanism of sensory processing to maintain balance after ABI. The NedSVE-IBV system is a valid tool to quantify balance after ABI.

Background: Minimally invasive surgery implementation requires a regulated and orderly learning process., Methods: Jesús Usón Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre promotes a pyramid training model structured into four levels: training of basic and advanced skills in physical simulator (level 1), training of anatomical protocols and advanced skills with animal models (level 2) training advanced procedural skills with tele-surgical applications (level 3), and training in the operating room (level 4). Training provided at levels 1 and 2 is described and evaluated., Results: 4284 participants have been trained in laparoscopy at our institution. 95.5% surgeons: 49% gastroenterologists, 30% urologists, and 14% gynecologist (14%). 77% of celebrated courses consisted of 20 hours training (8 at level 1 and 12 at level 2). 94.37% of participants considered pyramid model as highly suitable, scoring 9.5 on a scale 1-10 for the model and for the simulation quality. 82.7% perceived the improvement in their laparoscopic skills and 99.56% recommend this training program to other surgeons., Discussion: There are no unified criteria between different training programs but most of them measure laparoscopic skills based on time of execution, quality or mistakes of the exercise, and the student satisfaction test., Conclusion: The pyramid training model lead to the acquisition of necessary laparoscopic skills to perform safely advanced minimally invasive techniques.

Background: Maternal pre-pregnancy obesity may be associated with impaired infant neuropsychological development; however, there are few studies and it is unclear if reported associations are due to intrauterine mechanisms., Methods: We assessed whether maternal pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity were associated with cognitive and psychomotor development scores (mean 100 ± 15) of children aged 11-22 months in two birth cohorts: Environment and Childhood (INMA, Spain; n = 1967) and Mother-Child (RHEA, Greece: n = 412). Paternal body mass index (BMI) was used as a negative control exposure., Results: The percentage of overweight and obese mothers was 18% and 8%, respectively, in INMA and 20% and 11% in RHEA, respectively. Maternal pre-pregnancy obesity was associated with reduced infant cognitive development scores in both INMA (score reduction: -2.72; 95% CI: -5.35, -0.10) and RHEA (score reduction: -3.71; 95% CI: -8.45, 1.02), after adjusting for socioeconomic variables and paternal BMI. There was evidence in both cohorts of a dose-response relationship with continuous maternal BMI. Paternal overweight/obesity was not associated with infant cognitive development. Associations with psychomotor scores were not consistent between cohorts, and were stronger for paternal than maternal BMI in RHEA., Conclusions: This study in two birth cohorts with moderately high obesity prevalence suggests that maternal pre-pregnancy obesity is associated with reduced child cognitive development at early ages. This association appears more likely to be due to maternal than shared family and social mechanisms, but further research is needed to disentangle a direct intrauterine effect from other maternal confounding factors.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the specific features of attention impairment in patients with schizophrenia and the correlation between those features and the patients' clinical status., Methods: We administered the Conners Continuous Performance Test (CPT-II), with cognitive and clinical scales, to 40 Spanish inpatients with schizophrenia and 40 healthy controls, and used a cross-sectional design to compare the groups' performances. We identified correlations between the measures and used multiple regression analyses to develop models showing how attention impairment contributed to clinical status., Results: The patients with schizophrenia showed significantly poorer performance than controls in 5 CPT-II measures that were related to focused attention. We also found that CPT-II measures primarily linked to focused attention had a significant association with negative symptoms. These CPT-II measures predicted 37% of the variability in negative symptoms in the regression model. We observed a more modest relationship among CPT-II measures of disorganized thought symptoms, global functioning, and general cognitive performance., Conclusions: Attention impairment in schizophrenia primarily involves difficulty in focusing attention, mainly related to negative symptoms. By contrast, sustained attention and vigilance seem to be affected only as a secondary consequence of the impairment to focusing attention.

This cross-sectional study investigated the differences between young expert soccer players' (n = 55) and novice players' (n = 74) decision-making ability during performance of invasion games (ages: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14 years). Decision-making ability was assessed in invasion games that were appropriately modified for age and expertise. Games were modified to meet the developmental needs and previous learning of the participants, so interference between motor execution and decision making was minimized. Game performance was videotaped, and measures of cognitive components were developed from observational analysis. Decision making was measured at two levels: (a) decision making restricted to the selection of the technical-tactical skills (passing, moving with the ball, getting free, marking, tackling, double teaming, and interception) and (b) decision making in the adaptation to the tactical context of the game. Expert players remained superior in decision-making ability when variation in skill execution was controlled. Decision-making differences between levels of expertise decreased with age with regard to the first level (skill selection) and increased with age in relation to the second level (tactical-context adaptation). Findings are discussed in terms of implications for instructional focus and task design.

Iodine is the main constituent of thyroid hormones, which in turn are required for fetal brain development. However, the relation between iodine intake during pregnancy, thyroid function, and child neurodevelopment needs further evaluation. The authors assessed the association of maternal iodine intake from diet and supplements during pregnancy and of maternal and neonatal thyroid function with infant neurodevelopment. The Mental Development Index and Psychomotor Development Index (PDI) for 691 children were obtained between 2005 and 2007 using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development at age 1 year in a prebirth cohort in Valencia, Spain. In multivariate analyses, a maternal thyrotropin level >4 μU/mL was associated with an increased risk of a PDI <85 (odds ratio = 3.5, P = 0.02). Maternal intake of ≥150 μg/day, compared with <100 μg/day, of iodine from supplements was associated with a 5.2-point decrease in PDI (95% confidence interval: -8.1, -2.2) and a 1.8-fold increase in the odds of a PDI <85 (95% confidence interval: 1.0, 3.3). When analyses were stratified by sex, this association was intensified for girls but was not observed for boys. Further evidence on the safety and effectiveness of iodine supplementation during pregnancy is needed before it is systematically recommended in iodine-sufficient or mildly deficient areas.

The abbreviated Barcelona Test (a-BT) is an instrument widely used in Spain and Latin American countries for general neuropsychological assessment. The purpose of the present study was to provide new norms for the a-BT as part of the Neuronorma project. The sample consisted of 346 healthy controls. Overlapping cell procedure and midpoint techniques were applied to develop the normative data. Age, education, and sex influences were studied. Results indicated that although age and education affected the score on this test, sex did not. Raw scores were transformed to age-adjusted scaled scores (SS(A)) based on percentile ranks. These SS(A) were also converted into age-education scaled scores using a linear regression model. Norms were presented on age-education scaled scores. Also, the a-BT cognitive profile was presented and should prove to be clinically useful for interpretation. These co-normed data will allow clinicians to compare scores from a-BT with all the tests included in the Neuronorma project.

Phonological and visual theories propose different primary deficits as part of the explanation for dyslexia. Both theories were put to test in a sample of Spanish dyslexic readers. Twenty-one dyslexic and 22 typically-developing children matched on chronological age were administered phonological discrimination and awareness tasks and coherent motion perception tasks. No differences were found between groups on the coherent motion tasks, whereas dyslexic readers were impaired relative to controls on phonological discrimination tasks. Gender differences followed the opposite pattern, with no differences on phonological tasks, and dyslexic girls performing significantly worse than dyslexic boys in coherent motion perception. These results point to the importance of phonological deficits related to speech perception in Spanish, and to possible gender differences in the neurobiological bases for dyslexia.

Williams Syndrome (WS) is a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a submicroscopic deletion on chromosome 7 q11.23. This is a systemic disorder in which cardiac problems and mental retardation are the key phenotypic symptoms. Although displaying a general cognitive impairment, they are most often described as exhibiting a peak and valley profile, with relative sparing of language and face processing abilities and severe impairment of visual-spatial cognition. In this study, we conducted a detailed cognitive assessment using Wechsler Intelligence Scales on a WS and a normal development control group. To explore the hypothesis of a dissociative cognitive architecture in WS, performance on subtests, factorial indexes and composite measures of Verbal, Performance and Full Scale Intelligence Quotient were analysed. Individuals with WS were found to score in Full Scale Intelligence Quotient (FSIQ) within mild to moderate mental retardation interval, and had significantly lower scores in all measures when they were compared with the normal development group. However, a specific intragroup cognitive profile was found for Williams Syndrome (confirming Mervis' definition of the WS cognitive profile) along with a specific developmental pathway (absence of an age-associated cognitive decline).

Each year, accidents involving mountain sports have many repercussions, including alarming public opinion and society. This study outlines the results of a qualitative study on the responses of 135 survivors of accidents that took place while mountaineering, climbing, downhill skiing and ski mountaineering, hiking, cross-country biking, and mountain racing. A content analysis was performed on the textual data obtained from the responses to an online survey. The identified causes were: environmental events, equipment, medical events, behavioral events, and time pressure, but they appear combined in different ways for the analyzed disciplines. Results show that for downhill skiing, direct causes of accidents were mainly behavioral: excessive speed, skiing errors, and fatigue. For ski mountaineering, direct causes were errors in decision-making and skiing. In mountaineering, precursors were unfavorable conditions, fatigue, lack of preparation, and skill errors. In climbing, difficulty is an omnipresent feature, but the precursors are mainly errors. Our results highlight the multi-causal nature of accidents that take place when practicing mountain sports. Finally, we examine the need to promote a mountain sports culture that highlights safety and injury prevention.

The purpose of this paper was to examine memory performance in patients with SLE by studying the overall deterioration in memory, analyzing the differences and frequency of impairment in the variables from the visual and verbal memory tests, and studying the alterations in the memory. This study included 59 patients with a diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and 18 with a diagnosis of chronic discoid lupus (CDL), who were administered the Spanish complutense verbal learning test (TAVEC) and the Rey complex figure test (RCFT). Statistically significant differences were detected between the two groups on the immediate visual recall and delayed visual recall variables, with the mean of the SLE group being lower than that of the CDL group. The difference between the frequency of verbal and visual impairment could be explained by various factors, one of which would be a lateralization of memory impairment.

Introduction: The diagnosis of patients with cognitive deterioration or dementia requires a global approach in which the neuropsychological examination is a key piece. As part of the GERMCIDE study (Group for the Study and Multicenter Registry of Incident Cases of Dementia in Spain), a protocol was designed that included an assessment of the different cognitive functions that are most frequently altered in dementias (memory, orientation, speech, praxis, abstraction capacity and executive function)., Methods: In order to obtain data in normal subjects, this neuropsychological protocol was applied to a group of persons over 50 years without cognitive deterioration or dementia., Results: A total of 103 subjects whose ages ranged from 50 to 95 years (mean: 73.5; SD: 9.3 years); 39 (37.9%) men and 64 (62.1%) women were studied. The mean score on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was 27/30 (SD: 2.0). In the speech and praxis tests, 90% of the subjects obtained the maximum value, while performances were more unequal in memory, reasoning and programming. Mean score, standard deviation and distribution in percentages for each subtest are presented., Conclusions: The values obtained in this sample of normal subjects and their distribution in percentages may be very helpful to facilitate the interpretation of the findings of the neuropsychological examination with the GERMCIDE protocol in the general neurology clinic visits and also in the specialized visits in dementia.

This paper aims to study the phenomenon known as 'highway hypnosis' or 'driving without attention mode', which has been defined as a state showing sleepiness signs and attention slip resulting from driving a motor vehicle for a long period in a highly predictable environment with low event occurrence, this being the case with motorways and very familiar roads [Highway hypnosis: a theoretical analysis. According to Wertheim's hypothesis on 'highway hypnosis', long-term driving on motorways and conventional roads, e.g. main roads, secondary roads--implies differences in the predictability of the movement pattern of the visual stimulation, in the eye musculature activity and in the type of feedback used in visual information processing (mostly extra-retinal on motorways and retinal and extra-retinal on conventional roads). All this ultimately leads to alertness differences between both road types. Our research is intended to provide empirical evidence from the hypothesis, based on the data recorded during the actual driving experience of a group of subjects on a motorway and a conventional road. We studied whether or not significant alertness differences were found-measured by EEG data relative to time periods of on-target eye-tracking performance--between motorway and conventional road driving. Our results partially support the hypothesis, as drowsiness proved to be higher on motorways than on conventional roads during the final driving period but not during the starting stage, when the opposite trend was noticed. This result could be explained by the fact that during the first driving periods the effects of the stimulus movement predictability had not yet become apparent, since they tend to show after a long drive.

Aim: The number of drivers and vehicles crossing our roads increases every year. Driving a car requires cognitive, psychomotor and psychological aptitudes and abilities that they should be assessed when the driving license is getting., Development: The current expectancy of life implies the increasing number of elderly people as drivers. The survival of brain injured people has increased because of scientific and technological improvements. The cognitive, emotional and behavioral sequelae of brain injury could influence in the ability to drive. However, the measures of this driving ability are not yet well established., Conclusion: Having in mind the legal dispositions, we would like to analyse the psychometric tests administering to get the driving licence and their sensitivity to assess brain injured people. It is also important to know how to manage cognitive deterioration drivers.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychomotor skills of the dental students at University Complutense of Madrid (UCM), using a battery of psychometric tests. The sample comprised 306 students of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of Odontology, who, during the last month of the academic term, took the test on rotation of solid shapes, the Embedded Figures test in its group form (GEFT), the O'Connor Tweezer test, the MacQuarrie test for mechanical ability and the indirect vision test. Before these tests began, some personal data of all students were collected. The results showed some statistically significant correlation between several personal variables (sex, manual dominance and previous skills) and performance in the psychometric tests, although no significant relation was found between these variables and the students' academic qualifications. When comparisons were made between the psychomotor tests and the academic results of the students, significant differences appeared in the tracing and dotting subtests of the MacQuarrie test, whereby those students with higher practical qualifications reached the best punctuation. In the O'Connor Tweezer test, the students who obtained the worst results were those with lower qualifications. These data could serve to detect at an early stage those students who need greater educational support. No relation was found between the GEFT and the indirect vision test.

Introduction: At the present time it has become a social necessity for most people to be able to drive a motor vehicle. For this reason, obtention of a driving license is continuously regulated so as to be adapted to the psychophysical aptitudes required at any given moment, since these vary with medical and social advances., Development: We review the doctrine on this subject in some of the major countries, finding that far from having similar criteria, there is disparity even between different jurisdictions of the same country. In Spain epilepsy is regulated regarding the difficulty in obtaining a driving license in the General Regulation for Drivers (RD 772/1997). We consider this in detail., Conclusions: We try to unify criteria regarding the periods free of seizures, modifying the language with respect to some of these, validity of the license, analysis of the medical report and its responsibility in case of third party injury in a road accident. We propose open debate to clarify these terms.

Objective: The purpose of this dissertation research was to design, standardize and validate the Spanish version of the Kent Infant Development Scale (KIDS)., Patients and Methods: This questionnaire is based on information obtained from the parents. It was translated into Spanish and named "Escala de Desarrollo Infantil de Kent" (EDIK). The EDIK normative data were collected from the parents of 662 healthy infants (ages 1 to 15 months) in pediatric clinics in Catalonia (Spain)., Results: Test-retest reliability (r = 0.99; p < 0.001), interjudge reliability (r = 0.98; p < 0.001) and internal consistency (Cronbach alpha = 0.9947) were determined. An "r' of 0.96 was obtained when EDIK scores were compared to their estimated developmental ages obtained from the Denver Developmental Scale. The correlation of the infants' chronological age and their EDIK was 0.96 (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: The high reliability and validity correlation coefficients demonstrate the sound psychometric properties of the EDIK. It appears to be a useful and acceptable instrument in measuring the developmental status of infants by using the reports of their parents.

With the aim preventing future problems of underachievement at school, we studied the possible relationship between learning difficulties and iron deficiency in nursery-school children. To do this, we determined the prevalence of iron deficiency and the prevalence or learning difficulties in the different areas of mental development in a sample of 136 nursery school children coming from the Alaquàs public school (Valencia), aged between four and five years. Their nutritional state and ferric state, socioeconomic and cultural level, and psychomotor development were evaluated. All the children were in a good nutritional state, coming from homogeneous families as regards their socio-cultural level and being divided into two groups as regards their economic situation. The iron deficiency prevalence was 17.6% in stage I (ferritina sérica < 12 ng/l) and 22.8% in stage III (anemia ferropénica). The coefficient for overall development was 85.95, the lowest marks being in the speech area. A positive association (prevalence ratio = 2; IC 95% = 1.1-8.3) between iron deficiency in its III stage and changes in the specific area of analysis and synthesis.

In a 15-year retrospective study, the results of 37 surgically treated nerve lesions of the upper extremity in 33 children were reviewed after a mean follow-up of 2 years. Children ranged in age from 4 to 15 years. There were 19 ulnar, 12 median, and 6 radial nerve injuries. Discontinuity of the nerve trunk was found in 23 patients operated by interfascicular grafting (18 patients) or epineural suture (5 patients). The other 14 lesions were treated by decompressive external neurolysis. Useful sensory function (S4-S3) assessed at the autonomous zone was restored in 31 patients (84%). Satisfactory motor recovery was achieved in 25 patients (67%). Independent of the type of lesion, the median nerve showed the best ability to regain complete motor and sensory function. In lesions with continuity of the nerve trunk, those affecting the radial nerve had a worse prognosis regarding motor function recovery. Unfavorable prognosis was mainly related to a time interval of more than 1 year between nerve damage and surgery.

A prospective study was carried out on the prevalence of iron deficiency and/or iron deficiency anaemia in 196 healthy infants aged between eleven and fifteen months. The results are as follows: iron deficiency and/or iron deficiency anaemia; 46.4%, isolated iron deficiency 37.7% and iron deficiency anaemia, 8.7%. Significant differences were not found in relation with the age to the introduction of natural cow milk. No delays were found in psychomotor development (using Denver's test) related to anaemia or iron deficiency.

A translation and adaptation of the revised form of the Denver Test is presented. This test is the most frequently used screening method for development in English-speaking countries, and the most recommendable in outpatient pediatrics. A description of the Test is made in which advantages, disadvantages and method of application are emphasised. Finally, the different pathological conditions capable of causing retardation in relation to each area of the Test are described, in order to facilitate its interpretation.
