Microbial processes can influence the complex geochemical behaviour of the toxic metalloid antimony (Sb) in mining environments. The present study is aimed to evaluate the influence of microbial communities on the mobility of Sb from solid phases to water in different compartments and redox conditions of a mining site in southwest (SW) Spain. Samples of surface materials presenting high Sb concentrations, from two weathered mining waste dumps, and an aquatic sediment were incubated in slurries comparing oxic and anoxic conditions. The initial microbial communities of the three materials strongly differed. Incubations induced an increase of microbial biomass and an evolution of the microbial communities' structures and compositions, which diverged in different redox conditions. The presence of active bacteria always influenced the mobility of Sb, except in the neutral pH waste incubated in oxic conditions. The effect of active microbial activities in oxic conditions was dependent on the material: Sb oxic release was biologically amplified with the acidic waste, but attenuated with the sediment. Different bacterial genera involved in Sb, Fe and S oxidation or reduction were present and/or grew during incubation of each material. The results highlighted the wide diversity of microbial communities and metabolisms at the small geographic scale of a mining site and their strong implication in Sb mobility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This research reports the risk assessment of an abandoned pyrite mine using direct toxicity assays of soil and groundwater samples taken at the site. The toxicity of As and heavy metals from mining soils to soil and aquatic organisms was studied using the Multispecies Soil System (MS-3) in soil columns. Ecotoxicological assessment was performed with soil samples diluted with a control soil at concentrations of 12.5, 25, 50 and 100% test soil/soil (w/w). In this way, changes in the mobility and bioavailability of soil contaminants due to changes in geochemical soil properties via soil dilution were studied. The toxicity of water samples was tested on algae and Daphnia magna. The assessment of the mining area indicated that the current presence of As and heavy metals at the site may cause injuries to soil and aquatic organisms in the entire research area. Moreover, this investigation demonstrated that changes in geochemical conditions can increase the availability of arsenic and, consequently, the environmental risk of these soils. A good correlation was not found between toxicity parameters and the concentrations of soil contaminants based on total and extracted element concentrations. This finding reinforces the usefulness of direct toxicity assays for evaluating environmental risk. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Salt marshes near urban, industrial and mining areas are often affected both by heavy metals and by eutrophic water. The aim of this study was to assess and evaluate the main processes involved in the decrease of nitrate concentration in pore water of mine wastes flooded with eutrophic water, considering the presence or absence of plant rhizhosphere. Basic (pH∼7.8) carbonated loam mine wastes and free-carbonated acidic (pH∼6.2) sandy-loam mine wastes were collected from polluted coastal salt marshes of SE Spain which regularly receive nutrient-enriched water. The wastes were put in pots and flooded for 15 weeks with eutrophic water (dissolved organic carbon ∼26mgL−1, PO4 3− ∼23mgL−1, NO3 − ∼180mgL−1). Three treatments were assayed for each type of waste: pots with Sarcocornia fruticosa, pots with Phragmites australis and unvegetated pots. Soluble organic carbon, nitrate, soluble Cd, Pb and Zn, pH and Eh were monitored. But the 2nd day of flooding, nitrate concentrations had decreased between 70% and 90% (equivalent to 1.01–1.12gN-NO3 − m−2 day−1) with respect to the content in the water used for flooding, except in unvegetated pots with acidic wastes. Denitrification was the main mechanism associated with the removal of nitrate. The role of vegetation in improving the rhizospheric environment was relevant in the acidic wastes because higher sand content, lower pH and higher soluble metal concentrations might strongly hinder microbial activity Hence, revegetation of salt marshes polluted by acidic sandy mining wastes might improve the capacity of this type of environment to act as a green filter against excessive nitrate contents flowing through them. Abstract: Two microcosm experiments were carried out to simulate the effect of sporadic oil spills derived from tanker accidents on oceanic and coastal marine phytoplankton assemblages. Treatments were designed to reproduce the spill from the Prestige, which took place in Galician coastal waters (NW Iberia) in November 2002. Two different concentrations of the water soluble fraction of oil were used: low (8.6±0.7μg l−1 of chrysene equivalents) and high (23±5μg l−1 of chrysene equivalents l−1). Photosynthetic activity and chlorophyll a concentration decreased in both assemblages after 24–72h of exposure to the two oil concentrations, even though the effect was more severe on the oceanic assemblage. These variables progressively recovered up to values close or higher than those in the controls, but the short-term negative effect of oil, which was generally stronger at the high concentration, also induced changes in the structure of the plankton community. While the biomass of nanoflagellates increased in both assemblages, oceanic picophytoplankton was drastically reduced by the addition of oil. Effects on diatoms were also observed, particularly in the coastal assemblage. The response of coastal diatoms to oil addition showed a clear dependence on size. Small diatoms (<20μm) were apparently stimulated by oil, whereas diatoms >20μm were only negatively affected by the high oil concentration. These differences, which could be partially due to indirect trophic interactions, might also be related to different sensitivity of species to PAHs. These results, in agreement with previous observations, additionally show that the negative effect of the water soluble fraction of oil on oceanic phytoplankton was stronger than on coastal phytoplankton. The global increase of cyanobacterial blooms occurrence has been associated with the presence of compounds that generate earthy and musty odor in freshwater systems, among which geosmin stands out. The lack of information on the factors associated to geosmin production by benthic organisms has driven the development of this study, whose main goal is to determine the effects of nutrient concentration and DIN:SRP ratio on geosmin formation and release. The experiment was performed in 18 microcosms under controlled conditions for 21 days, using a natural biofilm suspension from Ter river (NE, Spain) to promote biofilm settlement. Six treatments were set crossing three DIN:SRP ratios (A = 4:1, B = 16:1 and C = 64:1) with two nutrient concentrations (Low and High). After 7 days of experiment, geosmin was detected in biofilm, being higher under high nutrient concentration and low DIN:SRP ratio conditions. In this treatment, geosmin in biofilm reached its maximum concentration at day 16 (3.8 ± 0.9 ng/mg), decreasing at the end of the experiment (21d) due to cyanobacteria detachment and geosmin release into the water (136 ± 6 ng/L). Overall, this experimental study showed that high nutrient concentration and low DIN:SRP ratio favored the Oscillatoria genus development within biofilm communities, generating the optimal conditions for geosmin production.
