This paper presents a study on the perceptions of primary school teachers regarding their knowledge, usefulness, and use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education. Likewise, the relationship between sex, age, working time and the educational center in which it is found with the perceptions about ICT is obtained. To answer these questions, a battery of 14 categorical closed questions is designed, divided into four blocks: socio-demographic information; knowledge of ICT; usefulness of ICT; and use of ICT. In the context of measuring the knowledge, usefulness and use of ICT in education, the novelty of this work relies on the design of an indicator for each of the ICT-related blocks following the methodology of Human Development Indicators created by the United Nations Development Program. In this research, 119 teachers from Spanish primary schools were chosen as the study sample to answer the questions' battery. The results show a direct relationship between knowledge, usefulness, and use, although not significant. Although teachers are aware of the usefulness of ICT, and the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the use of technological tools for planning teaching in blended or distance learning lessons, this does not mean teachers have a greater knowledge of ICT. In addition, the findings indicate a greater knowledge by teachers in public schools, which contrasts with the finding that teachers in grant-assisted schools make the most use of ICT and find it the most useful. Finally, it is also suggested that the study's methodology and approach could be applied to other contexts or countries.

Competence in "Cultural awareness and expressions" requires very stimulating activities for its development, and cinema can be used as an interesting enhancer of educational action. The educational potential of the so-called movie-induced tourism, which has increased in recent years thanks to the impact of major productions such as "The Lord of the Rings," "Star Wars" or "Game of Thrones," could bring extra motivation when developing any competency including the aforementioned one. This article aims to suggest some keys on film tourism as a didactic resource and how destinations might capitalize on it through entrepreneurship. In doing so, educational establishments located within film destinations can carry out projects in this sense to work on the competence of "Cultural awareness and expressions". Thus, an example of didactic programming will be offered based on the creation of new tourist businesses to take advantage of "Lord of the Rings" saga filming in San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (Vizcaya, Basque Country, Spain).

The hospitality industry serves millions of people globally and is a multibillion-dollar industry with a significant growth expectation in the upcoming years. The Spanish tourism industry is one of the most developed sectors of the nation, being one of the main contributors to the country's GDP. On a world wide scale, and specifically in the European context, there is a rising awareness for firms' actions to be responsible towards the environment and the community in which they operate. Based on "triple bottom line" guidelines, companies' mission in such a context is achieving competitive advantage by means of a business model considering three key aspects: people, profit, and planet. Considering the hospitality industry's characteristics, it becomes essential to fulfill these new requirements to achieve sustainable competitive advantages. This exploratory study will outline which are the best practices of two main Spanish hotel corporations: NH Hotels and Meliá Hotels International. By pointing out actions undertaken by the most important firms of the sector, they can serve as an example and be replicated by other firms, thus increasing sustainability practices, improving understanding of triple bottom line, minimizing negative social as well as environmental footprint, and enhancing positive firms' impacts in their operating contexts.

This study aims to analyze the evolution of the Musical Curriculum for the second cycle of Early Childhood Education in Spain from a historical perspective. Methodologically, a review and analysis of the legislative documents on Early Childhood Education from the end of the 19th century to the present has been carried out. To this end, a comprehensive review of the main legislative contributions in this context is carried out. The results reveal that since the 1980s to the present, there has been a trend toward a greater number of curricular elements in relation to the area of Music and, in addition, with respect to the different musical fields, it is seen that they too have undergone a progressive increase over time. The inclusion of the musical language within the area of Artistic Education is a premise that has remained present in all documents. The level of concretion of the normative text is discussed, which has been decreasing over time, contributing to greater freedom for the teacher when considering teaching practice in the classroom. The study of past references is considered necessary to adequately shape the new regulations, especially in a context such as Spain, characterized by constant change in the educational field. Mandarins are one of the most important citrus fruits in the world in terms of tons produced. The late-season varieties of mandarin have a great economic value due to their high production in a season with few mandarin varieties. The objective is to carry out a preliminary study of characterization and comparison of the morphological and biochemical properties of the late varieties 'Afourer', 'Tango', and 'Orri'. The characterization consisted of physicochemical parameters related to the quality of the fruits, highlighting the total antioxidant activity using ABTS and DPPH, the organic acids and sugars using HPLC and the metabolomics of the juice by 1H-NMR. Afourer' mandarins were heavier and larger (120.75 g, 67.60 mm) than the other two varieties studied. Mandarins of the 'Orri' variety showed a different organic acid profile compared to the other varieties studied, and a higher amount of sugars (13.49 g/100 mL). 'Tango' variety mandarins grown on the Forner-Alcaide rootstock stood out for having a larger weight (113.52 g), a more intense color, and a greater amount of phenolic compounds (966.85 mg AGE/L Forner) than the fruits grown on Citrus macrophylla. Lemon is one of the most significant crops globally, with annual production exceeding 20.8 million tons in 2021. Spain leads the production in Europe with over 62% of lemon production (1.17 million tons in 2021). This study evaluated the real impact of cultivation conditions (rootstock and culture medium) on the compositional characteristics of 'Verna' lemons (peel and juice) using 1H-MNR metabolomic identification techniques and multivariate analyses. Twenty metabolites were identified in both the peel and juice samples. Arginine, phenylalanine, ethanol, and trigonelline were absent in the peel samples but present in all the juice. On the other hand, the metabolites asparagine, glutamate, formate, and malate were present in the peel samples but absent in the juice. The analysis of the results indicates that the rootstock had a significant impact on the metabolites related to the energy metabolism of the plant, which directly affects the development of fruits and the influence of the culture conditions (rootstock and culture medium) on the plant's adaptive response and modification of metabolic pathways. Energy consumption is one of the main components of the financial cost of water services. To a large extent, this comes from the traditional supply through the purchase of energy from private utilities, which is associated with a certain amount of pollution. This justifies a constant pursuit of the development of alternative energy sources with lower environmental impact and, if possible, lower financial cost. Fortunately, in recent years there have been constant improvements in the technology of solar panels, so that their viability no longer depends exclusively on their environmental benefits or public subsidies but is an alternative that can be financially viable in certain cases. Specifically, in some regions with a high shortage of water resources, there is an important development of non-conventional water sources that consume a significant amount of energy, so this work studies the possibility of substituting part of this energy by selfconsumption from photovoltaic panels. In general terms, this possibility is viable from a financial point of view when consumption is low, as the yearly savings from self-consumption compensate for the initial investment. This research examines the differences in the price for water supply for the Spanish households according to the type of household and the region of residence, which is of great relevance in terms of equity. The analysis covers the entire Spanish territory with the aim of establishing comparisons between regions, determining the current situation of the various household types and highlighting some considerations on the water policy financing. The evidence obtained shows how the invoice has an unequal impact on the various types of household, as well as that there are large differences between territories. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that the differences are greater as household income decreases, thus affecting households with tighter budgets or more members. For this reason, modifying the water price policy with the objective of inducing equality and efficiency, in addition to pursuing cost recovery, would be convenient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To ensure good fertilization, it is necessary to know the optimum nutrient levels for each crop. The most common method for obtaining this information for almond trees is to perform a foliar analysis coupled with the use of interpretive tools such as the traditional range of normality. However, currently, there are other, more sophisticated methods such as the DRIS (Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System) and the CND (Compositional Nutrient Diagnosis) which take into account the relationship between nutrients. However, little information is available with respect to these methods in the case of almond trees. In the present work, 288 samples of three contrasting varieties of almond were analyzed—Ferraduel, Ferragnes, and Garrigues (Prunus dulcis, Mill.)—corresponding to bi-weekly sampling between the months of May and September. Leaf analysis data, run with different mathematical and statistical models, lead to knowledge of the optimum period for harvesting samples and the determination of the ranges of normality and norms of DRIS and CND for the Ferraduel, Ferragnes, and Garrigues varieties. Data gained from the leaf nutrient content reported that the best season to harvest and interpret leaf samples was July. In addition, Ferraduel and Ferragnes had higher N, P, and K (2.22, 0.14, and 1.04 mg Kg−1 dw, respectively) than Garrigues (2.00, 0.09. 0.67 mg Kg−1 dw). The norms obtained with the leaf mineral data showed similar values between the Ferraduel and Ferragnes varieties but different values for Garrigues variety. Therefore, Garriges had the highest N/P, N/K, P/K, and P × Mg norms in the DRIS method and the highest VN and VCa norms in the CND method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: We aimed to develop a tool for the assessment of the risk of patient discomfort in Spanish hospital wards. Background: Several studies described tools to assess comfort but most are long and complex. Methods: Cross‐sectional study performed in three phases ((a) initial design; (b) refinement and psychometric testing; and (c) internal validation of the Hospital Discomfort Risk [HDR] questionnaire). Results: A voluntary expert panel proposed the HDR questionnaire. Internal consistency and factorial analysis were investigated in 270 (53.7% men, mean age 57.33 ± 18.7 years) inpatients. Based on the Cronbach's α, three items were removed to the final 8‐item version of the questionnaire. The HDR questionnaire showed a good predictive ability for identifying the risk of discomfort (c‐index:.897, 95% CI 0.854–0.930; p < .001). Conclusions: The HDR questionnaire could be useful for identifying inpatients at risk of discomfort, but further prospective studies should externally validate these results. Implications in Nursing Management: Nurses are the healthcare professionals with better access to patients and the first in identifying complications of hospitalization. Patients' discomfort could be routinely assessed during hospitalizations using the HDR questionnaire. Abstract: This study, conducted in the Catalan Coastal Ranges, north‐east Spain, describes the Upper Devonian Kellwasser event in a shallowing‐upward sequence of black shales, siltstones and quartz arenites. This sequence was deposited in a progradational and regressive coastal system where the sedimentary environment evolved from the inner shelf to a lagoonal pond located landward of the shoreline. Three anomalous succeeding steps have been identified by geochemical analysis. The first one, detected on the inner shelf, was characterized by oxygen depletion and high organic productivity. The second, detected in the nearshore, was caused by hydrothermal activity occurring under normal oxic conditions. The third and most intense step was identified in the muds of the lagoonal pond and has been linked to strong anoxic conditions, elevated clastic input derived from changes in the weathering regime at the source area and moderate hydrothermal activity. The Kellwasser event is thus defined in the study area as stepwise and multi‐causal. This is the first time that the Kellwasser event has been identified in a sedimentary environment behind the shoreline. The disposal of desalination brine, which contains a higher concentration of salts, is treated as waste and discharged into the environment. In this brine, several elements, when processing and extraction were possible, could be susceptible to exploitation and valorisation. Among all the ions existing in desalination brine, and whose industrial use is possible, sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca) and boron (B) are found at high concentrations; there are also other elements, not as abundant as previous, but highly demanded in the current industry, such as lithium (Li), rubidium (Rb), strontium (Sr) or gallium (Ga). These elements, as well as other alkaline metals, have taken on considerable prominence today due to their technological applications. Analysing the prices and quotations of these elements in the international markets for raw materials, it is possible to determine the economic potential of this mining activity of desalination plants in Spain. The economic value of the extracted elements also incorporates other additional advantages, which focus on the elimination, or reduction, of brine discharges, the savings in transportation and transaction costs of raw materials, in addition to the considerable reduction in environmental impacts caused by traditional mining. • The value of the elements present in the desalination brine has been obtained. • This value varies depending on the source of desalinated water. • Two types of valuable elements are identified according to price and quantity. • The results are key to design the brine mining strategy. Decision-making in water resources management is a perennial source of political debate. When a basin suffers from a structural water shortage the possible solutions are either a transfer from another basin or the use of other unconventional resources such as those obtained through desalination or water reuse. Politics and territorial interests have given rise to undesired fluctuations in Spain's water policy, in particular with regard to transferring water from one basin to another. However, conflicts have not prevented water management in Spain from being one of the most advanced in the world, even with its unfavourable geographical context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare, for the first time, white and black mulberry species in terms of their main physicochemical characteristics in eight Spanish clones. The results showed significantly different characteristics between the black and white mulberry species. Fruit weight of mulberry species ranged from 2.10 to 4.15 g, and fruit juice yield, from 41% to 62%. Fructose (~61%) and glucose (~39%) were the predominant sugars in all mulberries. The MN1 clone displayed the highest total acidity (>2.6 g L−1), and malic acid was the most abundant organic acid (6.65 g kg−1). Cluster analysis has allowed grouping of the clones into three groups (i) MN1 and MN2; (ii) MN3 and MN4; and (iii) MA1, MA2, MA3 and MA4. Experimental results proved that Spanish mulberries have high potential for fresh consumption (attractive dark colour in Morus nigra clones, high sugars content and intense sweetness) and industrialisation (~50% juice yield, attractive juice colour, high content of crude fibre and intense sweetness). Abstract: The vegetative growth habit as well as the yield of seven pomegranate varieties native to Southeastern Spain was studied. The evaluated cultivars were: Mollar de Elche 14 and 15 (“ME14” and “ME15”), Piñón tierno de Ojós 2, 4, 7 and 8 (“PTO2”, “PTO4”, “PTO7” and “PTO8”) and Casta del Reino 1 (“CRO1”). Very short vegetative shoots bearing a rosette of leaves behave as photosynthetic units. These units were abundant in all evaluated varieties; approximately 50% of all buds yielded this type of shoot unit. The other 50% were either mixed shoots or shoots with apical flower buds. Moreover, there appeared to be a tendency of the “PTO” varietal group and the “CRO1” cultivar to produce a higher number of mixed shoots than the ME varietal group. The Mollar de Elche varieties yielded longer mixed shoots than prompt lateral ones. The “PTO” varietal group and the “CRO1” cultivar approximately produced from 2 to 4 length units of prompt lateral shoots per each mixed shoot unit. Commercial juices of sweet pomegranates and fresh juices of sour–sweet pomegranates were analysed for organic acids, sugars, antioxidant activity, volatile composition, sensory profile and consumer liking. Organic acids and sugars were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography, while volatiles were extracted using hydrodistillation and analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and gas chromatography–flame ionisation detector. Malic acid was predominant in sweet juices while citric acid in sour–sweet samples. Fructose and glucose were found as the predominant sugars in all juices. A total of 18 compounds were found in pomegranate aroma profile, including monoterpenes, aldehydes, alcohols, monoterpenoids and linear hydrocarbons; the most abundant compounds were 3-carene, α-terpinene and α-terpineol. The total concentration of volatiles ranged from 2.0 up to 5.1 mg/L, with commercial samples presenting higher total concentrations due to the presence of peel volatiles. The high potential of sour-sweet pomegranate fruits for the juice industry was supported by (a) the high values of positive attributes, such as colour and fresh pomegranate flavour and (b) the high overall liking of consumers. The origin of the water supply system of Tajo-Segura, in 1932, goes back to when it was the unique possible solution to the shortage of hydric resources in the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS). Its energy consumption is not homogeneous; it could be bigger or smaller, depending on the different water destination. The energy cost average of water of the Tajo-Segura water supply system is 1.21 kWh/m³. The energy consumption of desalination depends on the type of process used to desalinate the water, the time of operation and the capacity of the plant, and also on the density of water to treat. In any case, the energy consumption of the desalination ranges between 3.8 and 4.2 kWh/m³; obviously that is bigger than those obtained of the Tajo- Segura water supply system (1.21 kWh/m³). The purpose of this paper is to assess whether financial performance differences between labour-managed (LOFs) and mercantile (PCFs) firms are due to differences in their capital-ownership configuration or to the particular measurement indexes commonly used to quantify performance. The empirical evidence rests upon a 1994–2003 data set of LOFs and PCFs that operate in the Industrial and Services sectors of the economy of Navarre, Spain. The results do not detect significant differences in financial performance between LOFs and PCFs, especially in the long-term and suggest the need to develop performance indices more akin to the special nature of the LOFs. Knowledge of target environments in breeding programs is important to better direct the development of germplasm. The objectives of this study were to identify associations among barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) growing environments to identify mega-environments to select the best locations to breed barley. Twenty-seven years of grain yield data from the international Barley Yield Trial (IBYT) conducted by the ICARDACIMMYT Barley Breeding Program, consisting of 750 grain yield trials of two replications representing 235 locations in 75 countries, were analyzed using pattern analysis to group sites across years that represent similar selection environments. The shifted multiplicative model (SHMM) was employed to group sites within each year. Environments clustered into three main groups and squared Euclidean distances were used to identify a representative location within each cluster. Group 1 locations were characterized as being cool with intermediate precipitation; Group 2 locations were warmer and drier; and Group 3 sites were generally cool and had the highest average precipitation. The respective representative key locations for each of the three groups were Leida, Spain; Boulifa, Tunisia; and Setif, Algeria. All three key locations are located in the Northern Hemisphere between 36° and 41° latitude. The results of this study show that the global adaptation of barley is possible and can be improved by breeding and selection for adaptation within the three main mega-environments identified. Aims: The study provides useful information on the temporal population dynamics of the biological control agent, Penicillium frequentans, after its applications against brown rot in orchards. Methods and Results: Population dynamics of P. frequentans were studied on peach flower and fruit surfaces after different field treatments. Eight experiments were carried out in commercial peach orchards in Spain, over four growing seasons from 2002 to 2005. Six different formulated P. frequentans conidia were applied four to six times from blossom to harvest and P. frequentans population sizes were monitored using conidial numbers and colony forming units (CFU) per flower or fruit. A consistent population of P. frequentans, ranging from 105 to 106 number of conidia or 103 to 104 CFU of P. frequentans per flower or fruit, was obtained. Colonization of peach surfaces by all P. frequentans formulation are similar and it appears to follow a general pattern: (i) higher colonization of fruits at preharvest than on the flowers at bloom; (ii) high populations just after treatments, especially after preharvest treatments; and (iii) a slight decline between treatments, especially in cool and moist springs. The exponential model was the most appropriate for fitting and comparing the P. frequentans dynamic populations on peaches and nectarines over time. The linearization of the P. frequentans population curve was essential to determine dynamic population and for population levels forecast. A positive relationship between number of blossom and preharvest applications, temperature, relative humidity and dynamic of P. frequentans population applied on peaches was studied using a multiple regression model. Conclusions: Blossom and preharvest applications were the most important spray times for obtaining the highest population of P. frequentans on peach surfaces. This paper presents a critical evaluation of the economic survival of labour-managed firms (LMF) compared to that of conventional companies, paying particular attention to their different forms of capital ownership. There are many arguments both ways; some argue that LMFs enjoy a higher likelihood of survival, since they offer greater employment stability and their workers enjoy more incentives as they are involved in the decision-making process. The counterarguments claim that LMFs are less efficient, due largely to the free-rider problem, serious agent-principal problems, a higher degree of risk aversion on the part of their worker-owners and degeneration due to rent-seeking behaviour, which reduces their likelihood of survival. The results of this evaluation point to the divergence between most of the predictions of economic theory and the successful development of LMFs in Spain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Four wettable powder formulations of Penicillium frequentans conidia with measurable viability of one year and an improved adherence to peach surfaces were produced by the addition of various ingredients, in two separate steps of the production and drying processes, to conidia. These formulations were then evaluated against brown rot of peach fruit caused by Monilinia spp. Formulations were applied to fruit either as postharvest treatments or before harvest in field treatments to peach trees. In the case of postharvest treatments to fruit, reductions of brown rot were obtained with all P. frequentans formulations. Treatments applied before harvest were tested in six field experiments in peach orchards in Spain. A total of 100 fruits, randomly selected in each orchard, were used as the sample unit and every treatment was repeated four times. Results showed that P. frequentans formulations significantly reduced the inoculum density of the pathogen (measured as the number of conidia on peach surface) in five trials out of the six tested, better than a chemical fungicide that only showed a reduction of the pathogen conidial in two of the six trials. Abstract: This study evaluated the production of five new pomegranate varieties (ME14, ME15, PTO2, PTO7 and CRO1), being all indigenous to Southeastern Spain where the species shows high variability. A morphological and organoleptic characterisation of the edible portion of the seeds were investigated. Some chemical characteristics of the juice, including total soluble solids, pH, acidity and maturity index, were assessed. Morphological characteristics of both the edible and the woody portions of the seed were evaluated. Also productive and organoleptic characteristics of all varieties were considered, being ME14 and ME15 the highest yielders. Furthermore, PTO2 and CRO1 showed the heaviest seeds (both showing an average weight of 0.61g) while ME15 the lightest one (0.37g). Regarding seed juice content, there were significant differences among the evaluated varieties; whereas PTO2 and CRO1 showed the highest juice contents, PTO7 yielded the lowest one. However, the cultivar PTO7 showed a significantly higher acidity content than the others, along with the lowest maturity index at all. Finally, ME14 and ME 15 were very interesting because of their high production, large fruit size and excellent seed organoleptic characteristics. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Forty-seven greenhouses of vegetable crops were surveyed in south-eastern Spain at the beginning of the epidemic (January 2000) to compare sensitivity ofBotrytis cinereapopulations to pyrimethanil (an anilinopyrimidine fungicide) after 4 years of treatment with an unexposed population from a 1992 collection. A standard method to test the sensitivity ofB. cinereato pyrimethanil in a defined minimal medium (1.75 g/l of KH2PO4, 0.75 g/l of MgSO4, 4 g/l of glucose and 4 g/l of gelatine) was used to establish frequency distributions of pyrimethanil sensitivity in both populations. Two different distributions for sensitive and resistant isolates were obtained. ED50 of sensitive isolates in 1992 ranged from 0.05 to 0.5 mg a.i./l (mean ± SE, 0.23 ± 0.02), and 0.04–0.4 mg a.i./l in 2000 (0.11 ± 0.01). ED50 for resistant isolates ranged from 1 to 10 mg a.i./l in both surveys (5 ± 2.64 and 4.25 ± 2.14, in 1992 and 2000, respectively). No resistance build-up to pyrimethanil was developed inB. cinereapopulations after exposition of 4 years to the fungicide. Anin vitromonitoring procedure was developed based on testing on one single discriminatory dose of pyrimethanil (established at 0.7 mg a.i./l). Isolates resistant to pyrimethanil in thein vitroassay caused visible lesions on cucumber leaf discs treated with the fungicide. No significant differences in fitness (growth or sporulation) between resistant and sensitive isolates were obtained. The 307 isolates collected in January 2000 were testedin vitrousing discriminatory doses to estimate the frequencies of resistance ofB. cinereato benzimidazoles (carbendazim), dicarboximides (procymidone),N-phenylcarbamates (diethofencarb), and anilinopyrimidines (pyrimethanil). Of the 307 isolates collected, 90% were resistant to benzimidazoles, 77% to dicarboximides, 23% toN-phenylcarbamates and 12% to anilinopyrimidines (in this case of 165 isolates). Dicarboximide and benzimidazole cross-resistant isolates were found in each of the surveyed greenhouses and accounted for 65.8%. Abstract A strategy for integrated biological and chemical control of Botrytis cinerea in unheated tomato greenhouses in southeastern Spain was tested. The biocontrol agent used was a commercial preparation developed from an isolate of Trichoderma harzianum T39 (Trichodex® ). Decisions concerning whether to spray the biocontrol agent or a fungicide were made based on a future weather disease warning system called BOTMAN implemented as follows: no spraying when slow or no disease progress was expected; use of a chemical fungicide when an outbreak of epidemics was expected; in all other cases, application of Trichoderma harzianum T39 was recommended. A 4-day weather forecast provided by the Eastern Andalusian Weather Forecast Service was used for predictions. The integrated strategy was compared with weekly applications of fungicides in two experiments conducted over 1998–99 and 1999–2000. Reduction of disease incidence was obtained only with the fungicide-only treatment in the 1998–99 experiment (55%, P < 0.05). Application of BOTMAN gave high disease risk only in 2 dates or times in that experiment, so fungicides were only applied twice. For the remaining 12 dates or times, Trichodex® was sprayed. In the second experiment, application of BOTMAN gave moderate risk all the weeks and Trichodex® was applied nine times. In this experiment, disease level did not differ significantly (P < 0.05) from untreated plot. The reasons for failure of BOTMAN in Spanish conditions were discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The survival of Botrytis cinerea in sterile and unsterile soil at different temperatures and relative air humidities was investigated in south-eastern Spain. Conidia survived only 7 days at 40∘ C but, depending on relative humidity, for 30–90 days at 22∘ C. High air humidity (95%) was needed to maintain soil humidity (8%) at a level that favoured conidial survival. Conidia survived better in sterile soil than in unsterile soil, probably because of the presence in the latter of soil microorganisms antagonistic to B. cinerea . Survival of conidia in environmental conditions simulating those in a greenhouse was less than 28 days. Results showed that B. cinerea conidia cannot survive over summer in south-eastern Spain, and other primary sources of inocula are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Tagus-Segura water transfer has generated significant value in the region that receives its water resources. Despite this value, some agents seek the cancellation of this important infrastructure, arguing economic, environmental, social, and political problems. With the aim of providing information on the efficiency of the Tagus-Segura aqueduct as a water resource management measure, especially in terms of the importance of water and the tariffs paid by the users of the aqueduct, this paper presents valuable information to analyse how to improve the functioning of the infrastructure. Thus, the southeast of Spain obtains a high return on the water received from the water transfer while covering all the financial costs derived from it. However, in 2017 a modification was introduced in the tariff that forced water users to cover the construction and fixed costs of the infrastructure as if the total amount of water agreed upon had been received, when in reality a lower amount had been received. This problem was not solved by the proposed tariffs for 2021, and it is therefore essential for the efficient operation of water transfer to modify these tariffs so that they are fair and reduce existing problems, thus avoiding the cancellation of an infrastructure that has not yet been amortised and which provides many benefits to the receiving region. For decades, the Province of Alicante, located in the Southeast of Spain, has experienced important economic development associated with groundwater exploitation. The scarcity of superficial resources and irregular distribution in the time and space of rainfall, typical of the Mediterranean environment, together with the extensive limestone outcrops, have made groundwater a key resource for the area. However, insufficient knowledge about aquifers, especially the lack of precise recharge estimates, hinders regional water management. This study establishes updated recharge estimates and water budgets for the 200 aquifers found in Alicante, using readily usable methodologies and available data. These are soil water budget models, groundwater flow models, water table fluctuation methods, and spring flow analyses. The results show low mean annual values of recharge from precipitation (69 mm/year and a coefficient of 12%) and two main differentiated domains. The first one, in the northeast of the province, under more humid climatic conditions with larger carbonate aquifer systems, has higher recharge coefficients, ranging from 14% to 24%, and greater resources. For the rest of the province, where aquifers are smaller and annual averages of rainfall range between 250 and 400 mm, average recharge rates are low (9–12%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work examines the transformations occurred with the shift from private company to water user association and natural park, looking at one collective irrigation system located in Alicante province (Spain): Riegos de Levante, Izquierda del Segura, one of the most extensive irrigation areas in Europe. Between 1918 and 2018, a process of change and transformation of both landscape and institutions occurred, considering: infrastructure expansion and its operation, the transfer of irrigation management responsibilities to water user association, after years of financial operations with water, thanks to state intervention, the coexistence of traditional agriculture with the modernisation of the irrigation systems, the history of an irrigation reservoir which was transformed into a natural site in 1988, or the evolution of the composition of water resources, taking into account the arrival of the Tajo-Segura transfer waters from the year 1979. The general objective is to understand key factors driving these changes, by means of a paradigmatic case study, as well as to identify policymaking and context-relevant dynamics that could enable it. Wall paintings in the Roman period were used to decorate both public and private spaces; therefore, they reflect, on the one hand, ideas and convictions, and on the other, daily activities and socio-economic models. Characterizations of the pigments used in mural paintings are useful for determining the economic status of a specific settlement or the importance of a particular area or the buildings within it, since the cost of different pigments varied widely. Isotope analysis can be used to identify the provenance of pigments and to establish whether the raw materials are local, regional, or imported. This provides very important information, as it might be related to both the quality and the cost of the pigments, which, in turn, might be indicators of the socio-economic status of the area in question. The present study examines the sulfur isotope ratios of the cinnabar used in Roman wall paintings sampled from the high-status Roman Domus of Casa d'Avinyó and compares them with the ratios of the analyzed geological ores sampled at various Spanish cinnabar/mercury mines. The results exclude the possibility of the cinnabar being imported from outside the Iberian Peninsula. An isotopic analysis also suggested a few possible sources for the pigments. During a certain period in the history of Spain, in the years of the Second Industrial Revolution, water companies played a very important role in managing a public service as necessary and complex as the supply of drinking water to the population. This article describes the emergence of these companies in the economic framework of the second half of the 19th century, as well as their expansion and territorial distribution, their evolution towards large companies that unified and monopolised the sector and their progressive decline in the 20th century, characterised by an increase in municipal control and influenced by different national and international war conflicts. The data collected in the different statistical yearbooks allows us to study these companies, and identify the characteristics of the modern drinking water system in Spain, together with the importance of foreign investment and the influence of these companies on the economic development of the time. Actual cost of services of local entities (CESEL, in Spanish) is the name of a new official source of statistics in Spain, provided by Ministry of Finance and Civil Service, which intends to bring some transparency to a very obscure question: the real costs of local public services, in this case, the collection costs of municipal solid waste (MSW). The study analyzes the factors that determine solid waste collection costs in 2014, using a cross-sectional dataset of municipalities of the Spanish Mediterranean Arch and Madrid, with special reference to urban development. The results of the regression reveal a positive relation between waste collection costs and factors such as higher wages, coastal municipalities, tourist areas, population and separated collection; in contrast, the increase in urban population density contributes to lower costs of MSW collection, as well as indirect management of the service is cheaper than direct public delivery. Water pricing is one of the fundamental tools for water resources management. However, the current tariff structure in Spain has associated problems in relation to the composition of households. This paper analyses the current tariffs of Spain's Valencia region and studies the effect of alternative tariff structures. The results show an imbalance irrespective of the tariff applied even when the number of household members is considered, as the relationship between the number of household members and water consumption is not linear. Therefore, the problem is not the tariff structure per se but not including the composition of the household in the tariff. • New tariff structures have been designed to determine their feasibility. • It has been found that alternative tariff structures would not be efficient. • The same lack of efficiency arise from including the number of household members in the tariff. • The inclusion of household type in the tariff is key to solving the current problems. Abstract: Since quince (Cydonia oblonga) currently shows high genetic variability, along with the precarious state of preservation of the species in some cultivation areas, the study evaluated morphological, chemical and organoleptically five quince clones (MEMB1, MEMB2, MEMB3, MEMB4, and MEMB5) in the Southeast of Spain. Leaf characterisation generally showed ovate leaves, cordate base, mucronated apex and obtuse apex angle. Globose fruits predominated in all clones. Total soluble solids (TSS) ranged from 11.5°Brix to 14.7°Brix), and the predominant sugars were fructose and glucose; MEMB3 yielded the highest sugar content of all (17.93%). While malic was the main organic acid (0.78%) followed by tartaric (0.22%), quince juice yielded very low citric acid (0.009–0.014%). Besides, quince generally showed high crude fiber contents (8.14% for MEMB1), low fat contents and can weight up to 290g. The characterised clones were appropriate for both fresh consumption and processing due to their semi-hard pulp and low astringency. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study evaluated the characteristics of seven pomegranate accessions (CRO2, ME14, ME16, PTO3, PTO4, PTO7, and PTO8). All are indigenous to two provinces in Spain where the species shows high variability. Morphological, chemical and organoleptic characterizations of the fruits and arils were investigated. ME14 and ME16 were the accessions the sensory panel granted major acceptance. Furthermore, PTO8 and CRO2 showed the heaviest arils and ME14 and ME16 the lightest. The latter accession presented the highest values for crude fiber content, total soluble solids and lower titratable acidity (TA); its flavor could be classified as sweet, while the PTO7 accession are classified as sour-sweet. All of them can be considered acceptable for fresh consumption, and the cultivars receiving the highest overall assessment were ME14 and ME16. Abstract: Strawberry runners are a high-value cash crop in Spain that requires vigorous transplants free of pathogens. Pre-plant soil fumigation with methyl bromide (MB), or with mixtures of MB and chloropicrin (Pic), are standard practices for controlling soil-borne diseases. However, use of MB will be forbidden in European Union countries by the year 2005; for this reason several soil fumigants have been tested as chemical alternatives to MB in Spanish strawberry nurseries. Because of the known broad activity of these compounds, their effects on strawberry soil fungal communities were studied. Experiments were conducted over a 5-year period, with pre-plant applications at two different locations each year. Soil fungal populations were estimated in each plot before and after treatments on potato-dextrose agar amended with 0.5gl-1 streptomycin sulphate and selective media for Fusarium spp., Pythium spp., Verticillium spp., Phytophthora spp., and Rhizoctonia spp. Soil fungal populations in Spanish strawberry nurseries were clearly reduced in number and composition after pre-plant soil fumigation. Differences in the level of reduction was obtained with some treatments. Penicillium sp., following by Alternaria sp., Fusarium sp., Morteriella sp., Cladosporium sp., Pythium sp., and Verticillium spp. were usually presented in Spanish nursery soils from March to April, whereas Phytophthora spp. and Rhizoctonia spp. were only sporadically isolated. All the fumigants reduced the soil fungal population quantitatively, but only MB:Pic and dazomet caused a clear change in their fungal genera composition. A total reduction was observed on Pythium and Morteriella populations after application of all the fumigants, except for DMDS. Populations of Verticillium spp. were also reduced by the applied fumigants in the strawberry nursery soils tested; the lowest reductions were obtained with 1,3-D:Pic + Virtually Impermeable Film, metam sodium, metam potassium and DMDS. Preplant soil fumigation with methyl bromide, or with mixtures of methyl bromide and chloropicrin, is a standard practice for controlling soilborne diseases. Soil fumigants chloropicrin, 1,3-dichloropropene, dazomet, metam-sodium, metam potassium, and dimethyl disulfide were evaluated in combination with different plastic films as alternatives for methyl bromide soil fumigation of strawberry nurseries. The studies were conducted over a 4-year period, with fumigant applications prior to planting. Verticillium wilt (caused by Verticillium spp.) and crown rot (caused by Phytophthora cactorum) were the main diseases. Chloropicrin, 1,3-dichloropropene, and dazomet compared well with methyl bromide fumigation for control of strawberry nursery diseases. Furthermore, 1,3-dichloropropene and methyl bromide, applied at 50% rate under virtually impermeable film, provided effective disease control in strawberry nurseries.
