Abstract

This article discusses the process of criminal transportation from Mexico to the Philippines during the 17th century. The author comments on the relationship between the transportation of convicts and the power and influence of the Spanish monarchy in the Pacific region. She also considers the social conditions within the Spanish colonies at this time period, which saw an increase in criminal activity among the lower classes. Resources from the Archivo General de la Nación and the Archivo General de las Indias, historical archives in Mexico and Spain, are consulted.
