1. The Professional Practice of Designing Tasks: How Do Pre-Service Early Childhood Teachers Promote Mathematical Processes in Early Algebra?

Abstract

Spanish educational curriculum adopts a mathematical process-based approach, which encompasses problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connections and representation. A fundamental role in the integration of these processes in mathematics teaching is played by teachers' professional practice of designing tasks. According to this, our aim is to analyze the ways in which pre-service early childhood teachers understand the mathematical processes in the professional practice of designing early algebra tasks and to identify how they intend to promote these processes through the tasks. Content analysis techniques were used to examine the designed tasks. To illustrate the data analysis and results, six tasks are presented. As a result, pre-service early childhood teachers associate problem solving with challenges and questions. They understand problems as unfamiliar situations but ignore the relationships between students and tasks. Moreover, they do not encourage exploration of phases of problem solving and tend to use strategies more suitable for routine tasks. Communication is identified in all the tasks designed, encouraging interaction and discussion. However, only one task explicitly promotes mathematical language. For reasoning and proof, pre-service teachers begin to use questions to elicit explanations and justifications, but do not encourage verification strategies and various modes of reasoning. The process of connections is only present in one task, reflecting the fragmented nature of mathematics teaching. We conclude that the professional practice of designing mathematical tasks is a powerful in teacher education. However, training programs should place greater emphasis on the meaningful use of mathematical processes.

2. Training in Mathematics Education from a Sustainability Perspective: a Case Study of University Teachers' Views

Abstract

Humankind is faced with major global challenges to ensure the future of our planet. Target 4.7 of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (quality education) of the 2030 Agenda establishes the importance of ensuring that all learners acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to promote sustainable development through education for sustainable development, human rights, gender equality, and global citizenship, amongst others. The research presented in this article is based on an exploratory study on the views of a group of university teachers from the area of Didactics of Mathematics in the Faculty of Education Sciences at Universidad de Cádiz with regard to Education for Sustainability and its integration in the field of training future teachers in mathematics education. It aims to analyse the perceptions teachers have regarding the subject of study, the work methodologies they use, etc. in greater depth. The authors of the research later interviewed three teachers in the area of Didactics of Mathematics who teach in different education degrees: bachelor's degree in early childhood education, bachelor's degree in primary education, and master's degree in teacher training for compulsory secondary education and baccalaureate. Three instruments were used to collect data: the syllabi of the subjects for which the teachers were responsible, an initial exploratory questionnaire, and a semi-structured personal interview. The instrument employed to analyse the information was the Tool for Methodological Analysis through Sustainability (Herramienta de Análisis Metodológico desde la Sostenibilidad, HAMS in Spanish). The results show the different views and positions the university teachers in the area of Didactics of Mathematics at Universidad de Cádiz have with respect to integrating sustainability into future teachers' training in mathematics education. It is concluded that the effective integration of sustainability into mathematics education requires university teachers to change and to work together from the same perspective--the one they intend to promote.

3. Mathematical Content on STEM Activities

Abstract

In this paper, a number of STEM educational proposals are systematically analyzed from the lens of mathematics education. An extensive innovation project was implemented during the 2019/2020 academic year in a pilot study carried out in Schools and Teacher Training Programs in Navarre (Spain), comprising a bibliographical and source analysis as a previous step to characterize the existing material, and ultimately to design and test STEM projects at different educational levels from the point of view of mathematical education. All activities belong to international publications and widely used and contrasted web repositories, and seize the usual interval of compulsory education, i.e., from the beginning of Primary School (age 6/7) to the end of Secondary School (age 15/16). The findings draw a panorama of STEM activities where mathematics is mostly utilitarian, numbers and units are functionally used to measure quantities of magnitudes, and geometric contents serve the purpose of modeling a technological prototype. As it turns out, some STEM-labelled activities do not fulfill their principles and fundamental purposes. In lower levels, there is a common confusion between STEM activities and science laboratory projects; in higher levels, complex mathematical content could appear. Even though some activities are guided science laboratory projects, it is concluded that most STEM activities have the potential of a-didactical situations, i.e., contexts where students put into practice their personal problem-solving techniques before teachers formalize the mathematical content.

4. An Instrument for Measuring Performance in Geometry Based on the Van Hiele Model

Abstract

In this paper we present the process of constructing a test for assessing student performance in geometry corresponding to the first year of Secondary Education. The main goal was to detect student errors in the understanding of geometry in order to develop a proposal according to the Van Hiele teaching model, explained in this paper. Our research methodology took into account reliability using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, as well as the construct validity, with the extraction of 13 factors that accounted for a high percentage of variance. This result leads us to conclude that the instrument constructed has the appropriate technical and pedagogical features to be considered an original and significant contribution to the field of geometry teaching. The final version of the test constructed after the extraction of factors is shown in the Appendix.

5. Solving Math and Science Problems in the Real World with a Computational Mind

Abstract

This article presents a new paradigm for the study of Math and Sciences curriculum during primary and secondary education. A workshop for Education undergraduates at four different campuses (n = 242) was designed to introduce participants to the new paradigm. In order to make a qualitative analysis of the current school methodologies in mathematics, participants were introduced to a taxonomic tool for the description of K-12 Math problems. The tool allows the identification, decomposition and description of Type-A problems, the characteristic ones in the traditional curriculum, and of Type-B problems in the new paradigm. The workshops culminated with a set of surveys where participants were asked to assess both the current and the new proposed paradigms. The surveys in this study revealed that according to the majority of participants: (i) The K-12 Mathematics curricula are designed to teach students exclusively the resolution of Type-A problems; (ii) real life Math problems respond to a paradigm of Type-B problems; and (iii) the current Math curriculum should be modified to include this new paradigm.

6. The Conception and Role of Interdisciplinarity in the Spanish Education System

Abstract

This article provides an overview of the role that interdisciplinarity plays in the Spanish education system. With this aim, we first describe the main conception of the term "interdisciplinarity" in texts written in Spanish, including other terms that have similar meaning. Then we review the role of interdisciplinarity in the Spanish curriculum at different levels of education, focusing fundamentally on compulsory education. This serves as the basis from which later to analyze Spanish research on interdisciplinarity. Finally, through results of this research and some examples of interdisciplinary school practices, we extract conclusions about the role of interdisciplinarity in teaching practices in the classroom.

7. Online Communities of Practice Enhancing Statistics Instruction: The European Project EarlyStatistics

Acknowledging the fact that teachers are at the heart of any educational reform effort, the European Union funded project EarlyStatistics aims to enrich European children's learning of statistics by offering their mathematics teachers a high-quality online professional development program. A central conviction underlying the design of the program is that learning as part of a community of practitioners can provide a useful model for teacher professional development. Teachers participating in the program will form a , which will support best practices and innovation in statistics education by providing access to a wide array of colleagues, discussions, and resources eluding teachers in their workplaces.

9. A Computer Approach to Mathematics Curriculum Developments Debugging

Abstract

Sequencing contents is of great importance for instructional design within the teaching planning processes. We believe that it is key for a meaningful learning. Therefore, we propose to formally establish a partial order relation among the contents. We have chosen the binary relation "to be a prerequisite" for that purpose. We have applied this approach to the mathematical contents of the compulsory Secondary Education of the Spanish educational system and the information obtained has been modeled as a graph. The amount of contents considered (814) and the number of ordered pairs in the order relation considered (17,782) has produced a big graph. In order to work effectively with that amount of data, we have used software specialized in network analysis. More precisely, we have used the software packages Pajek and Gephi. This software, together with the use of techniques borrowed from graph theory, has allowed providing a tool for debugging curriculum developments (similar to rule based expert systems verification).

10. Continuous Activity with Immediate Feedback: A Good Strategy to Guarantee Student Engagement with the Course

Abstract

This paper describes the experience of applying a new teaching strategy to a basic mathematics course at the Open University of Catalonia. This strategy requires students to engage with practice and assessment tests with automatic feedback. The main aim of this research is to look into the extent to which the key elements of this teaching strategy influence the students' course completion and academic achievement. In order to achieve this purpose, qualitative and quantitative variables over one term have been measured weekly. Our findings suggest that this teaching strategy significantly reduced the number of students who dropped out and improved academic results. More specifically, regular practice activities at the beginning of the semester help to engage students in the completion of the course. (Contains 4 figures and 2 notes.)

11. Integration of a CAS/DGS as a CAD System in the Mathematics Curriculum for Architecture Students

Abstract

Students of Architecture and Building Engineering Degrees work with Computer Aided Design systems daily in order to design and model architectonic constructions. Since this kind of software is based on the creation and transformation of geometrical objects, it seems to be a useful tool in Maths classes in order to capture the attention of the students. However, users of these systems cannot display the set of formulas and equations which constitute the basis of their studio. Moreover, if they want to represent curves or surfaces starting from its corresponding equations, they have to define specific macros which require the knowledge of some computer language or they have to create a table of points in order to convert a set of nodes into polylines, polysolids or splines. More specific concepts, like, for instance, those related to differential geometry, are not implemented in this kind of software, although they are taught in our Maths classes. In a very similar virtual environment, Computer Algebra and Dynamic Geometry Systems offer the possibility of implementing several concepts which can be found in the usual mathematics curriculum for Building Engineering: curves, surfaces and calculus. Specifically, the use of sliders related to the Euler's angles and the generation of tools which project 3D into 2D, facilitate the design and model of curves and rigid objects in space, by starting from their parametric equations. In this article, we show the experience carried out in an experimental and control group in the context of the Maths classes of the Building Engineering Degree of the University of Seville, where students have created their own building models by understanding and testing the usefulness of the mathematical concepts. Abstract

In this article we present a review of the state of the art in mathematical e-learning and some personal experiences on this area developed during the last eleven years at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC), a completely online university located in Spain. The article discusses important aspects related to online mathematics courses offered in higher education programs, including: benefits and challenges, universities offering this type of education, methodological considerations, emergent technologies, learning projects and environments, etc. Also, key aspects of the UOC mathematical e-learning model and its historical evolution are described and analysed. Special attention is paid to mathematical curricula in computer sciences degrees, where a lot of work needs to be done in order to adapt mathematics courses to the continuously changing educational necessities of students. A curricula design proposal, based on a top-down approach, is presented as a best practice. Finally, some trends and future perspectives on the subject are suggested. 13. Mathematics Teaching in Four European Countries

Abstract

This article discusses a comparative study, funded by the European Union, of the teaching of mathematics in five European countries, (Flanders, England, Finland, Hungary and Spain) to students in the upper primary (ages 10-12) and lower secondary (12-14) years. These ages were chosen as they represent a time when many students' experiences of mathematics shift from concrete and inductive to abstract and deductive. The project team video-recorded a single sequence of lessons in each country on each of four key topics. After an initial school-based meeting, during which the project aims and aspirations were outlined, each teacher was filmed for four or five successive lessons, starting with the first on a particular topic. The topics, which were representative of the breadth of school mathematics, concerned the teaching of: (1) percentages (a topic of arithmetic applicability) at the upper primary level; (2) polygons (a routine geometrical topic) at the upper primary level; (3) polygons (an opportunity to examine curriculum continuity) at the lower secondary level; and (4) linear equations (an early topic of formal algebra) at the lower secondary level. In summary, the project data indicates that teachers behave differently in different countries and that their reasons for so doing may be a consequence of informed decision-making or an unacknowledged conformity to a particular tradition of mathematics teaching. 14. On the Role of Engineering in Mathematical Development

Abstract

It is customary for engineering syllabuses to include a substantial amount of mathematics, a fact traditionally justified through their usefulness in the analysis and resolution of many technological problems. In other words, usually the role of mathematics in engineering is emphasized. Nevertheless, the opposite viewpoint could be considered as well: What, if any, is the role of engineering in mathematics? This is a less popular standpoint, and we shall show in this paper that there exist engineering ancestors in some very pure mathematics, and that interrelation is a constant between technological and scientific areas. In particular, we track the ancestors of fractal geometry and chaos up to the development of steam technologies in the 18th century. (Contains 5 figures and 1 table.)

Abstract

This work aims to examine how the learning of mathematics in early childhood is developed in different policies, particularly within the processes of formal education and care in early years institutions. A comparative analysis of early mathematics education policies across countries must consider cultural differences, teaching practice, structural differences and institutional framework conditions, as well as the initial training and professional knowledge of teachers and educators. Extracted from the official country regulations, the following pages include some of the main characteristics of the national systems of early childhood education and care (ECEC) in Portugal, Slovenia and Spain, as well as a comparison of the ECEC guidelines concerning mathematics education between these three countries. There is an international consensus on an approach to early mathematics education inspired by realistic mathematics education (RME), i.e., on the importance of working mathematically in context, as well as on the idea of doing so through play, developing the language to communicate mathematical ideas. However, we found that these three aspects are reflected very differently in the official regulations of the three countries: while in Spain the development is very detailed and emphasizes the holistic approach and the role of mathematics in exploring the environment, the Portuguese curriculum emphasizes the role of mathematics as a form of language. The Slovenian curriculum, at last, focuses on the concepts and procedures associated with each mathematical sense.
