Simple Summary: Feathers are essential for a bird's flight, insulation, communication, and camouflage. They degrade over time, so birds must moult regularly. This study examined how avian haemosporidian infection and the size of the uropygial gland affect feather quality and growth rate in two migratory bird species in southwestern Spain—the house martin (Delichon urbicum) and the sand martin (Riparia riparia). We found that house martins had the highest haemosporidian infection rates, likely due to their large colony size. Infection only decreased feather quality in house martins and did not affect the feather growth rate in any of the two hirundinids. Additionally, feather growth rate was positively linked to feather quality, but only in house martins. Finally, we found no connection between the uropygial gland size and feather quality or feather growth rate. These results show, for the first time, that avian haemosporidian parasites can negatively impact the feather quality of migratory birds, thus potentially affecting their flight and survival. Further research is needed to fully understand these relationships. Bird feathers have several functions, including flight, insulation, communication, and camouflage. This study examined the impact of avian haemosporidian infection and uropygial gland volume, as well as feather quality and feather growth rate in two migratory hirundine species captured in southwestern Spain—the house martin (Delichon urbicum) and sand martin (Riparia riparia). Our findings showed that the prevalence of infection varied among species, with house martins having the highest rates, possibly due to their larger colony size. Moreover, haemosporidian infection had a different impact on each species; infected house martins exhibited lower feather quality than healthy individuals, although this outcome was not observed in sand martins. Furthermore, no effect of infection on feather growth rate was observed in both hirundinids. Additionally, feather growth rate only correlated positively with feather quality in house martins. Finally, no link was observed between uropygial gland volume and feather quality or feather growth rate in any of the species in this study. These findings highlight the effect of haemosporidian infections on the plumage of migratory birds, marking, for the first time, how avian haemosporidian infection is shown to adversely impact feather quality. Background: The feeding behavior of bloodsucking insects determines the transmission, distribution, host spectrum and evolution of blood parasites in the wild. Conventional wisdom suggests that some vector groups (e.g. black flies, family Simuliidae) are consistently exophagous daytime biters. We aimed to understand more about the exceptions to this pattern by combining targeted trapping and molecular identification of parasites in vectors. Methods: In this study, we collected black flies in nest boxes used by European rollers Coracias garrulus in southeastern Spain. We molecularly analyzed 434 individual insects, identifying the black fly species caught in the nest boxes, their potential vertebrate blood meals, and the haemosporidian parasite lineages that they carried. Results: Only one black fly species, Simulium rubzovianum, appeared to enter the nest boxes of rollers. Among the trapped specimens, 15% contained vertebrate DNA, which always belonged to rollers, even though only half of those specimens were visibly engorged. Furthermore, 15% of all black flies contained Leucocytozoon lineages, indicating previous feeding on avian hosts but probably not on infected adult rollers. The known vertebrate hosts of the recorded Leucocytozoon lineages suggested that large and/or abundant birds are their hosts. Particularly represented were cavity-nesting species breeding in the vicinity, such as pigeons, corvids and owls. Open-nesting species such as thrushes and birds of prey were also represented. Conclusions: Our data strongly suggest that S. rubzovianum bites uninfected roller nestlings and infected individuals of other species, potentially incubating adults, inside nest boxes and natural cavities. This simuliid does not appear to have a strong preference for specific host clades. Contrary to the general pattern for the group, and possibly enhanced by the harsh environmental conditions in the study area, this black fly appeared to intensively use and may even have a preference for confined spaces such as cavities for feeding and resting. Preferences of vectors for atypical microhabitat niches where hosts are less mobile may enable social and within-family transmission and parasite speciation in the long term. At the same time, a lack of host preference in concentrated multispecies communities can lead to host switches. Avian malaria and related haemosporidian parasites can negatively impact fitness in many songbirds. Research on the malaria infection and its physiological costs on their avian hosts is heavily skewed toward native passerines, with exotic species underrepresented. However, introduced species may carry on and spread new pathogens to native species, and play a role on parasite transmission cycle in invaded bird communities as pathogen reservoir. Here, we molecularly assess the prevalence and diversity of haemosporidian parasites in three introduced wetland passerines (the Red Avadavat Amandava amandava , the Yellow-crowned Bishop Euplectes afer , and the Common Waxbill Estrilda astrild) captured during the same season in southwestern Spain. We also explored the relation between parasite infection, body condition, haematocrit, and uropygial gland volume. We detected an overall parasite prevalence of 3.55%, where Common Waxbills showed higher prevalence (6.94%) than Red Avadavats (1.51%). None Yellow-crowned Bishops were infected with haemosporidians. Almost 60% of infections were caused by Leucocytozoon , and about 40% by Plasmodium. We identified four unique lineages of Plasmodium and three of Leucocytozoon. Moreover, 91% of the identified host–parasite interactions represented new host records for these haemosporidian parasites. Parasite infection was not related to body condition, haematocrit, and uropygial gland volume of the wetland passerines. Haematocrit values varied seasonally among bird species. Additionally, haematocrit was positively related to body condition in the Yellow-crowned Bishops, but not in the other species. Red Avadavats had higher haematocrit levels than Yellow-crowned Bishops, whereas Common Waxbills showed the lower haematocrit values. The uropygial gland volume was positively correlated with body condition in all bird species. Common Waxbills showed higher uropygial gland volumes related to their body size than birds from other two species. Urbanization is an important human-driven process that leads to biodiversity loss and alters the interactions between organisms, including disease transmission. Although urbanization affects both host and vector communities, the effects on vector-borne pathogens are still poorly understood. Here, we monitored variation in prevalence and richness of three common blood parasites in birds (Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon) from localities with different land uses (urban, rural and natural) during two consecutive years (2013 and 2014). Overall, 1400 juvenile house sparrows (Passer domesticus) from 15 localities in southern Spain were included in this study. Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon prevalence was higher in 2013 than in 2014, particularly in urban and natural habitats for the case of Leucocytozoon. Prevalence was correlated between years for Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon , independently of the habitat. Additionally, rural habitats harboured significantly higher Haemoproteus lineage richness compared to urban and natural habitats during 2014. Leucocytozoon lineage richness was negatively correlated between years in rural habitats but positively correlated in urban and natural habitats in comparison. Parasite lineages found in birds were homogeneously distributed along habitats and years and the common lineages prevalence were not influenced by them. Our results highlight different patterns of infection depending on the parasite genera probably related to the composition and density of vector communities. The specific reproductive environmental requirements of the different groups of vectors involved in the transmission may be affected by climatic conditions and landscape features. Avian haemosporidians are a common and widespread group of vector-borne parasites capable of infecting most bird species around the world. They can negatively affect host condition and fitness. Vultures are assumed to have a very low prevalence of these blood parasites, likely due to their strong immunity; however, factors contributing to variation in host exposure and susceptibility to haemosporidians are complex, and supporting evidence is still very limited. We analyzed blood samples collected from nestlings of three vulture species in Spain over 18 years, and used updated nested-PCR protocols capable of detecting all haesmosporidian cytochrome b lineages typical for diurnal birds of prey (Accipitriformes). Similarly to previous studies, we found low haemosporidian prevalence in cliff-breeding species, with Leucocytozoon as the only represented blood parasite genus: 3.1% in griffon vultures ( Gyps fulvus ) ( n = 128) and 5.3% in Egyptian vultures ( Neophron percnopterus ) ( n = 114). In contrast, the tree-breeding cinereous vulture ( Aegypius monachus ) had a substantially higher prevalence: 10.3% ( n = 146). By far the most common lineage in Spanish scavenging raptors was the Leucocytozoon lineage CIAE02. No effects of nestling age and sex, or temporal trends in prevalence were found, but an effect of nest habitat (tree-nest vs. cliff-nest) was found in the griffon vulture. These patterns may be explained by a preference of vectors to forage in and around trees rather than on cliffs and wide open spaces. We found an apparent detrimental effect of haemosporidians on body mass of nestling cinereous vultures. Further research is needed to evaluate the pathogenicity of each haemosporidian lineage and their interaction with the immune system of nestlings, especially if compromised due to pollution with pharmaceuticals and infection by bacterial and mycotic pathogens.
