Mar González is a psychologist and one of the pioneers in studies on LGB-parent families in Spain. Her research work from the 2000s onwards played an essential role in the parliamentary debate in the country, which culminated in the approval of same-sex marriage in 2005. Spain, a Catholic-majority country that had left the Franco dictatorship three decades earlier, was the third country in the world, after Belgium and Netherlands, to recognize the right of gay and lesbian people to unite. Her studies address unconventional families, family diversity, child and family development, and their relationship with education and health. Our conversation addressed LBG parenthood, the establishment of filiation rights for this social group, studies on these family configurations, and leading LGB parenthood health implications. In Spain, important changes have taken place based on local and European movements advocating for LGBT formal rights and stemming from a favourable national political context. Same sex marriage and adoption were regulated in 2005, but lesbian and bisexual women are still struggling, often on a daily basis, against invisibility, hostility and absence of recognition. This article draws from interviews conducted in Madrid about lesbian coupledom within the project "INTIMATE—Citizenship, Care and Choice: The Micropolitics of Intimacy in Southern Europe". To address the liberalization of a wide range of intimate transformations, I use the concept of intimate citizenship to explore how women in the context of lesbian coupledom struggle for the right to fulfil their intimate lives, and at the same time contribute for social change. Furthermore, I analyse the narratives of women in lesbian coupledom paying particular attention to the extent to which they are living precarious lives in contexts as diverse as families of origin, public spaces and state-based institutions. Drawing on the particularities of Catalonia (and related cases), the general point of this contribution is to argue that Patten’s equal recognition theory is modeled upon a too-restricted set of empirical assumptions, a circumstance that might harm its value as a tool for the orientation, evaluation, and reform of public policy. What is absent in Patten’s account – or at least not properly inserted into it – are four built-in modules that we have named ‘history’, ‘democracy’, ‘international relations’, and ‘migration’. When it comes to recognition of minorities, the past matters more often than Patten is willing to accept; democracy can lead to permanent departures from equal recognition on the part of self-governing national minorities; in the recognition game, there are other relevant players than simply states and their minorities; and one of these players, namely immigrant groups, can (albeit involuntarily) distort equal recognition schemes. Law 5/2011, of March 29, on Social Economy, establishes a legal framework for the recognition and development of social economy entities in Spain. This law is based on the principles of the 2002 Social Economy Charter and seeks to promote a model of sustainable development in economic, social, and environmental aspects. The law defines social economy and establishes the principles that the entities that make it up, such as cooperatives, foundations, and associations, must follow. It also regulates the representation of these entities and creates the Council for the Promotion of Social Economy as an advisory body. The law came into effect on April 30, 2011.
