A questionnaire was recently developed for the use with the Spanish-speaking, and evidence have been provided about the construct internal validity by means of structural equation modelling. In this paper, two research questions were considered: (i) What new evidence does application of the Rasch model provide regarding the validity of this construct?; (ii) What cutoffs should be applied to the constructed scales in order to differentiate between acceptable and insufficient levels of the construct being measured? Participants were 1,272 Spanish at both high-school and college level. The instrument is a pencil and paper questionnaire written in Spanish, comprising 20 items (5-point Likert-type scale) distributed evenly across four scales: beyond exact replicas, purpose of models, multiple models, and changing models. Students' responses were coded on an ordinal scale from zero to four. We then conducted a Rasch analysis using both a multidimensional approach and a consecutive unidimensional approach for each dimension. Data provided new evidence regarding the internal validity of the four scales of the questionnaire. The Rasch analysis also allowed us to establish cutoffs for the constructed scales. The evidence provided by this, and the previous study suggest that the questionnaire may be useful as a diagnostic tool when applied to groups or populations of students. In addition, the identified cutoffs could, hypothetically, serve to differentiate between students with an adequate versus an insufficient understanding of the nature of models. The need to explore new forms of leadership in schools, among other available alternatives, leads to the reflection upon the way in which--specifically from the principal's office--it is developed, implemented and distributed. This paper presents two case studies in Spanish secondary schools in which the practices are analyzed and the limitations recognized in the exercise of distributed leadership by their principals. This study used interviews and shadowing of the principals, recording the observations of meetings and interviews with other influential agents from each school. Despite the particular differences in each case and a greater role of social interaction processes, the outcomes reflect the persistent focus on the individual action of the principals and the pre-eminence of formal and bureaucratic components in the development of distributed leadership. This situation prevents progress beyond the mere distribution of management tasks and hinders the possibilities of consolidating other forms of leadership expression that involve more agents and groups.

This study investigates birthdate patterns in a context of well-established civil registers and intensive migration inflows. Leveraging extensive Spanish microdata on residential variation flows and the Spanish Municipality Register, this research reveals new facets of the distributions of immigrants’ birthdates across days of the month that differ significantly from those of non-migrants. The registered days of the month for birthdates are categorized into six distinct types based on the assumption that the anomalous distributions of birthdates will display rounding or simplifying patterns (digit preferences). The investigation reveals important anomalies in the distribution of birthdates that are much more pronounced for immigrants. A notable concentration of recorded birthdates is confirmed within all the designated types, contrasted by an under-recording of births on the remaining days of the month. These anomalies depend primarily on migrants’ country of origin and age group. The paper ends by proposing some recommendations for mitigating the anomalies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although small children have autobiographical memories, as they grow, they forget its specific details. Although this forgetting is common in early childhood, the presence of effective cues may help recall autobiographical memories. This study examines the effect of verbal and visual cues on the long-term maintenance of a school trip autobiographical memories. One hundred children aged between 50 and 74 months were divided into three experimental groups: one verbal, one visual, and one control groups. The results show that, compared to the control group, both verbal and visual cues enhanced children's autobiographical memory of the school trip in the short term. These results are in line with those of other studies showing that over time children require reminder cues in order to accurately recall autobiographical memories, and that the benefit seems to be greater if the reminder cue is visual.

This paper shows an alternative to the traditional teaching approach, focusing on the application of a STE(A)M-based learning methodology. In particular, we present an engineering technology problem-solving approach to encourage and motivate the mathematics learning of high school students by promoting positive beliefs about this subject. We report on qualitative data from a group of seven students and two teachers, who developed high-tech engineering projects during a two-year period, applying mathematical concepts and procedures. This data is part of a quasi-experimental study carried out with more than one hundred Spanish students. The findings revealed that solving problems in an engineering technology context helps to develop a practical sense of the applicability of mathematics, generating students' positive beliefs about this discipline.

This note illustrates some of the new roles that armed forces are taking on in developed countries, highlighting the structure, capabilities, and missions developed by the Spanish Military Emergency Unit (UME). The note describes some of these new roles assumed by UME, such as its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and shows, using official temporal and georeferenced data, the growing use of the military to support civilian authorities in response to natural disasters, man-made disasters, and other emergencies alike. In addition, we also analyze public opinion survey data to argue that this is helping to improve society's perception of the armed forces even in a country like Spain where, due to its recent history, a significant part of its population is reluctant to the military. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the gender dimension of its more visible socio-economic impacts has been the topic of study by several researchers. The current paper takes this further by focusing on the invisible chores done in the families at home. This paper studies how people's behavior towards housework changed during and after the confinement period in Spain. We analyze whether people did more housework during the lockdown period than before it, the way this housework was distributed between women and men, and whether this has changed since the end of lockdown. The empirical analyses point to a new trend in the housework gender gap: differences between men and women have narrowed since the lockdown, although women continue to bear most of the responsibility. In the current context, the need for marketing in institutions of higher education is undeniable. The specification of the student not merely as a 'customer' means that traditional marketing no longer has sufficient capacity to explain the behavior of the student body. In this study, a four-level relationship marketing model is tested to check the influence of perceived organizational support (POS) and perceived employability on identification with the institution and the perceived price-quality ratio and how these influence student satisfaction. In addition, the constructs prior to POS and perceived employability are identified, which are explicit enough to enable specific marketing actions to be carried out. As POS is a construct defined for the labor market, its use applied to relational marketing comes up as something innovative.To this end, Likert scales have been designed and validated to measure these constructs. The results of this test show how the perception of organizational support depends on the relationship of the student body with the administration and management of the center. Likewise, the perception of employability depends on the perceived reputation and the perception of the promotion of employability. Furthermore, it is confirmed that satisfaction is positively related to identification and the perceived price-quality ratio, which in turn are positively related to organizational support and perceived employability.

The growing interest in "Traineras", a traditional competitive rowing modality prevalent in Northern Spain, underscores the need for a comprehensive analysis of the injury incidence associated with this sporting practice. Despite rowing's significance in the international sports arena and its inclusion since the beginnings of the modern Olympic Games, research into injuries in this sport, especially in traditional modalities such as Traineras, has been limited. This study aimed to identify and describe the predominant injuries among Traineras rowers, analyzing their epidemiology, characteristics, affected body regions, and diagnoses, further differentiated by competitive level and gender. A retrospective survey completed by 773 rowers (24% women, 76% men) participating in various leagues (ACT, ARC1, ARC2, LGT1, LGT2, ETE, and LGT-F) during the season revealed that 68.2% suffered from at least one injury, predominantly due to overuse (91.1% in men, 83.1% in women). The most affected regions were the lower back and shoulders, with the main diagnoses being muscle cramps and tendinitis, showing statistically significant differences between sexes. The findings of this study not only provide a deeper understanding of the etiology and origin of injuries in this sport but also lay the groundwork for developing specific injury prevention plans, thereby contributing to the safety and optimal performance of athletes. The big data revolution has made it possible to collect, transmit and exploit huge amounts of data. The potential this offer for data analysis, however, clashes with the limitations imposed by laws on protection of personal data. This paper details a new database (DEMOSPA0521) made after processing and summarising more than 868 million demographic records from Spain, corresponding to a period of seventeen years (2005–2021). DEMOSPA0521 is composed of fifteen files: a group of (monthly and daily moving averages) datasets derived from population stocks and a collection of (daily, monthly and quarterly) datasets obtained from population, death, migration and birth statistics. The intra-annual distributions were calculated by exploiting both the temporal dimensions of age and calendar. DEMOSPA0521 also includes eleven R-Code files that enables the summary datasets to be derived from the raw microdata. Addressing global food waste is a formidable challenge, requiring comprehensive efforts across the food supply chain, particularly in sectors prone to waste like HoReCa (Hotel, Restaurant, and Catering). In MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) tourism, where gastronomy is a major attraction, overlooked meal services during working meetings contribute significantly to food waste. The MagNuS (Magnitude, Nutritional value, and Sustainability) project aims to assess and address food waste during conference events at the Valencia Conference Center in Spain. This study quantifies waste, categorizes it by food groups, estimates the potential number of individuals that could be fed with discarded food, and assesses energy and nutritional values. Across three events, 104.4 kg of food waste was documented, with cereals having the highest wastage, followed by legumes, fish, and others. Acknowledging potential underestimation due to reliance on cooked values, this study suggests using residues for vermicomposting or composting as sustainable waste management alternatives. These findings have implications for future initiatives, advocating diverse strategies to minimize food waste during congress events, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals. Neurological immune-related adverse events associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors can have several clinical manifestations, but the syndromes and prognostic factors are still not well known. We aimed to characterise and group the clinical features, with a special focus in patients presenting with encephalopathy, and to identify predictors of response to therapy and survival. This retrospective observational study included patients with neurological immune-related adverse events from 20 hospitals in Spain whose clinical information, serum samples, and CSF samples were studied at Hospital Clinic de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain. Patients with pre-existing paraneoplastic syndromes or evidence of alternative causes for their neurological symptoms were excluded. We reviewed the clinical information, classified their clinical features, and determined the presence of neural antibodies. Neurological status was assessed by the treating physician one month after adverse event onset (as improvement vs no improvement) and at the last evaluation (complete recovery or modified Rankin Scale score decrease of at least 2 points, indicating good outcome, vs all other modified Rankin Scale scores, indicating poor outcome); if the participant had died, the date and cause of death were recorded. We used Fisher's exact tests and Mann-Whitney U tests to analyse clinical features, and multivariable logistic regression to analyse prognostic factors. From Jan 1, 2018, until Feb 1, 2023, 83 patients with suspected neurological immune-related adverse events after use of immune checkpoint inhibitors were identified, of whom 64 patients were included. These patients had a median age of 67 years (IQR 59–74); 42 (66%) were male and 22 (34%) were female. The predominant tumours were lung cancer (30 [47%] patients), melanoma (13 [21%] patients), and renal cell carcinoma (seven [11%] patients). Neural antibodies were detected in 14 (22%) patients; 52 (81%) patients had CNS involvement and 12 (19%) had peripheral nervous system involvement. Encephalopathy occurred in 45 (70%) patients, 12 (27%) of whom had antibodies or well defined syndromes consistent with definite paraneoplastic or autoimmune encephalitis, 24 (53%) of whom had encephalitis without antibodies or clinical features characteristic of a defined syndrome, and nine (20%) of whom had encephalopathy without antibodies or inflammatory changes in CSF or brain MRI. Nine (14%) of 64 patients had combined myasthenia and myositis, five of them with myocarditis. Even though 58 (91%) of 64 patients received steroids and 31 (48%) of 64 received additional therapies, 18 (28%) did not improve during the first month after adverse event onset, and 11 of these 18 people died. At the last follow-up for the 53 remaining patients (median 6 months, IQR 3–13), 20 (38%) had a poor outcome (16 deaths, one related to a neurological immune-related adverse event). Mortality risk was increased in patients with lung cancer (vs those with other cancers: HR 2·5, 95% CI 1·1–6·0) and in patients with encephalopathy without evidence of CNS inflammation or combined myocarditis, myasthenia, and myositis (vs those with the remaining syndromes: HR 5·0, 1·4–17·8 and HR 6·6, 1·4–31·0, respectively). Most neurological immune-related adverse events involved the CNS and were antibody negative. The presence of myocarditis, myasthenia, and myositis, of encephalopathy without inflammatory changes, or of lung cancer were independent predictors of death. Most deaths occurred during the first month of symptom onset. If our findings are replicated in additional cohorts, they could confirm that these patients need early and intensive treatment. This study examined the factorial invariance and latent mean differences of the School Anxiety Inventory-Short Version across gender and age groups for 2,367 Spanish students, ranging in age from 12 to 18 years. Configural and measurement invariance were found across gender and age samples for all dimensions of the School Anxiety Inventory-Short Version.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared as a pandemic and public health emergency on 11 March 2020 by the World Health Organization. Different clinical trials on the efficacy of mRNA vaccination have excluded pregnant women, leading to a lack of empirical evidence on the efficacy of the vaccine in this population. The aim of the study was to examine the association between severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection at birth and adverse perinatal outcomes in infected and non-infected women from a university hospital in Spain. Methods: The data were obtained from electronic health records from 1 March 2020 to 28 February 2022. A bivariate descriptive analysis was performed, comparing women with and without confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy using the chi-square test. A multivariate logistic regression was complementarily conducted to determine whether SARS-CoV-2 infection increases the risk of adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes. Results: A total of 2676 women were divided into two groups: non-infected with SARS-CoV-2 (n = 2624) and infected with SARS-CoV-2 (n = 52). Infected women were primarily multiparous (p < 0.03) and had received an incomplete vaccination regimen (p < 0.001). A greater incidence of premature rupture of membranes (p < 0.04) was observed among the non-infected women. Pertaining to perinatal outcomes, there was a notable rise in NICU admissions (p < 0.014), coupled with an extended duration of stay (p < 0.04), for neonates born to infected mothers in comparison to their non-infected counterparts. Conclusion: Although SARS-CoV-2 infection may pose significant risks to pregnant women and their infants, adverse obstetrical/puerperal outcomes do not significantly differ between women infected and non-infected to SARS-CoV-2 in our study. NICU admissions were higher for neonates born to infected mothers. Additionally, coronavirus disease 2019 vaccination during pregnancy is not associated with severe adverse perinatal outcomes. Biological aging is a relevant risk factor for chronic diseases, and several indicators for measuring this factor have been proposed, with telomere length (TL) among the most studied. Oxidative stress may regulate telomere shortening, which is implicated in the increased risk. Using a novel estimator for TL, we examined whether adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), a highly antioxidant-rich dietary pattern, is associated with longer TL. We determined TL using DNA methylation algorithms (DNAmTL) in 414 subjects at high cardiovascular risk from Spain. Adherence to the MedDiet was assessed by a validated score, and genetic variants in candidate genes and at the genome-wide level were analyzed. We observed several significant associations (p < 0.05) between DNAmTL and candidate genes (TERT, TERF2, RTEL1, and DCAF4), contributing to the validity of DNAmTL as a biomarker in this population. Higher adherence to the MedDiet was associated with lower odds of having a shorter TL in the whole sample (OR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.85–0.99; p = 0.049 after fully multivariate adjustment). Nevertheless, this association was stronger in women than in men. Likewise, in women, we observed a direct association between adherence to the MedDiet score and DNAmTL as a continuous variable (beta = 0.015; SE: 0.005; p = 0.003), indicating that a one-point increase in adherence was related to an average increase of 0.015 ± 0.005 kb in TL. Upon examination of specific dietary items within the global score, we found that fruits, fish, "sofrito", and whole grains exhibited the strongest associations in women. The novel score combining these items was significantly associated in the whole population. In the genome-wide association study (GWAS), we identified ten polymorphisms at the suggestive level of significance (p < 1 × 10−5) for DNAmTL (intergenics, in the IQSEC1, NCAPG2, and ABI3BP genes) and detected some gene–MedDiet modulations on DNAmTL. As this is the first study analyzing the DNAmTL estimator, genetics, and modulation by the MedDiet, more studies are needed to confirm these findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seasonal influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus which constitutes a significant public health issue associated with high morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in attitudes, perceptions, and practices regarding influenza vaccination in the Spanish adult population during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as their vaccination intentions, with special attention paid to those over 65 years old and in high-risk groups. To this end, a cross-sectional study was conducted through 2219 telephone interviews, and the results were compared with results obtained a year earlier. Regarding the reasons for deciding to get vaccinated in the 2022/23 season, a significant increase was observed in vaccine confidence (36.7% vs. 42.8%), social responsibility (32.5% vs. 43.8%), and in awareness of the importance of vaccination due to COVID-19 (21.7% vs. 25.4%). Advanced age (OR 2.8, 95% CI 2.0–3.9), belonging to high-risk groups (OR 2.7, 95% CI 2.0–3.7), and prior vaccination (OR 25.3, 95% CI 19.5–32.7) emerged as significant predictors for the intent to receive the influenza vaccine in the 2022/23 season. Continuously observing shifts in perceptions and behaviors related to influenza immunization is crucial to pinpoint factors that may influence the willingness to receive the vaccine and, in this way, design public health strategies that achieve a greater acceptance of it. Background: The impact of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) on the outcomes of heart transplantation (HT) has not yet been clearly established. The objectives of this study were to examine the trends in the prevalence of T2D among individuals who underwent a HT in Spain from 2002 to 2021, and to compare the clinical characteristics and hospitalization outcomes between HT recipients with and without T2D. Methods: We used the national hospital discharge database to select HT recipients aged 35 and older. The International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revisions (ICD-9 and ICD-10) were used to identify patients with and without T2D. We also recorded comorbidities, complications of HT, and procedures. Propensity score matching (PSM) and Cox regression were used to analyze the effect of T2D on in-hospital mortality (IHM). Results: Between 2002 and 2021, a total of 4429 HTs (T2D, 19.14%) were performed in Spain. The number of HTs in patients with T2D decreased from 2002 to 2005 (n = 171) to 2014–2017 (n = 154), then rose during 2018–2021 (n = 186). Complications of HT increased in patients with and without T2D over the study period (26.9% and 31.31% in 2002–2005 vs. 42.47% and 45.01% in 2018–2021, respectively). The results of the PSM showed that pneumonia and Gram-negative bacterial infections were less frequent in patients with T2D and that these patients less frequently required hemodialysis, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and tracheostomy. They also had a shorter hospital stay and lower IHM than patients without diabetes. The variables associated with IHM in patients with T2D were hemodialysis and ECMO. IHM decreased over time in people with and without T2D. The Cox regression analysis showed that T2D was associated with lower IHM (HR 0.77; 95% CI 0.63–0.98). Conclusions: The number of HTs increased in the period 2018–2021 compared with 2002–2005 in patients with and without T2D. The Solvency II Directive, in its standard formula, proposes that a permanent 15% increase should be applied to mortality rates for covering normal deviations of mortality and that the rates should be increased uniformly over just the following year by 1.5‰ to cover catastrophic mortality deviations. The latter increase means disproportionally raising the rates for some ages, especially young people, with hardly any modification for others. In this paper we show, using data from Spain, the inadequacy of these loadings and this timing (for 1 year only) in protecting against a pandemic. As a solution, we propose a new methodology that allows the catastrophic risk of life to be modelled/calibrated through two parameters: a parameter to mainly cover catastrophic risks linked to specific extreme disasters (such as earthquakes, hurricanes or nuclear explosions) and another parameter to mainly cover catastrophic risks linked to pandemics. After establishing the relationships between these parameters in three different scenarios where the aggregate levels of risk/mortality associated with the Solvency II catastrophic shock are kept constant, we study its effect in terms of Solvency Capital Requirements (SCR) on a real life insurance portfolio. Emerging technologies are providing opportunities for designing new learning environments, especially environments in which students can learn by putting their skills into practice. Knowledge about the development of these experiences needs to be accumulated and processed so that they can be integrated effectively into training programmes. In this study we describe how transferable skills such as self-management and teamwork have been developed by 70 Spanish students of Education and Marketing. The learning experience comprised a serious game designed in a 3D simulation environment. For the analysis, two analytical rubrics were taken as references. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests such as Mann-Whitney "U" and Spearman "rho" were conducted for comparison and correlation analysis. Our results showed that the students performed well and had a positive perception of the suitability of using the simulation environment for the development of transferable skills. We also found that women performed better than men in activities involving teamwork, especially communication tasks.

This report describes a laboratory exercise that was incorporated into a Cell Biology and Molecular Biology advanced course. The exercise was made for a class size with eight students and was designed to reinforce the understanding of basic molecular biology techniques. Students used the techniques of reverse transcription and arginase activity measurement as well as nitric oxide determination to discover whether two specific genes were expressed by cytokine-stimulated dendritic cells. The experiment served as the basis for discussing the importance of differential gene expression inside the eukaryotic cell and the importance of cytokines in the immune system. This study examined engineering and physical science students' understanding of the electromagnetic induction (EMI) phenomena. It is assumed that significant knowledge of the EMI theory is a basic prerequisite when students have to think about electromagnetic phenomena. To analyse students' conceptions, we have taken into account the fact that individuals build mental representations to help them understand how a physical system works. Individuals use these representations to explain reality, depending on the context and the contents involved. Therefore, we have designed a questionnaire with an emphasis on explanations and an interview, so as to analyse students' reasoning. We found that most of the students failed to distinguish between macroscopic levels described in terms of fields and microscopic levels described in terms of the actions of fields. It is concluded that although the questionnaire and interviews involved a limited range of phenomena, the identified explanations fall into three main categories that can provide information for curriculum development by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of students' conceptions.

The main objective of this research was to create a robust hierarchical model to evaluate the power generation technologies in the energy mix of any country, with particular emphasis on its use in the case study of Spain. An exhaustive literature review allowed to identify a balanced number of the most relevant criteria that the model should consider to evaluate the seven alternatives that cover most of the Spanish energy demand. Through expert knowledge, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology allowed to obtain the local and global weights of the criteria used in the model. Using these weights and the assessments of alternatives for each criterion, their ranking was determined through both AHP and a novel fuzzy inference system (FIS), whose inference rules were automatically constructed based on the weights of the criteria and a distance minimization method. The design of this FIS constitutes the main contribution of the work, firstly, because it avoids a second round of experts consultations and, secondly, because it systematically conceptualises the knowledge base that allows to infer the individual evaluation of any alternative, without the risk of rank reversal that may occur if using only AHP. The results of the case study of Spain showed that environmental was the most important criterion. In terms of the comparative AHP merit order, Photovoltaic (PV) was ranked first and Coal last. In addition, the individual assessment of the technologies through FIS yielded results consistent with the previous AHP ranking. Background The Q Aspiration Catheter (MIVI Neuro) has demonstrated greater aspiration flow rates and ingestion forces compared with conventional catheters in vitro. The safety and performance of the Q Catheter was assessed using a direct aspiration first pass technique in patients with acute ischemic stroke at four neurointerventional centers in Spain. Methods We included adult patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy between March 2019 and March 2020 using the Q Catheter as first-line therapy. Performance endpoints included final successful revascularization of the target vessel (defined as modified thrombolysis in cerebral infarction (mTICI) grade 2B/3), first pass revascularization, and overall Q Catheter revascularization. Safety endpoints were symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH), embolization to new territory (ENT), and procedural complications. Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score and all-cause mortality were also assessed. Results Forty-five subjects were enrolled. The Q Catheter successfully navigated to the lesion in 95.5% (43/45) of patients. Final successful mTICI 2B/3 revascularization was achieved in 93.3% (42/45), first pass mTICI 2B/3 revascularization with the Q Catheter was 55.3% (21/38), and overall with Q Catheter mTICI 2B/3 revascularization was 65.8% (25/38). Favorable clinical outcome of mRS 0-2 was achieved in 55.6% (25/45). There were no cases of ENT. sICH and mortality rates were 2.2% (1/45) and 13.3% (6/45), respectively. Conclusion In this multicenter, observational study, the Q Aspiration Catheter used as first-line therapy demonstrated a good and safe profile in terms of navigation, revascularization, and safety in patients with acute ischemic stroke. In this observational and multicenter study, that included all patients who underwent a heart transplantation (HT) in Spain from 1984 to 2018, we analyzed the incidence, management, and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) after HT. Of 6,244 patients with a HT and a median follow-up of 8.8 years since the procedure, 116 CRC cases (11.5% of noncutaneous solid cancers other than lymphoma registered) were diagnosed, mainly adenocarcinomas, after a mean of 9.3 years post-HT. The incidence of CRC increased with age at HT from 56.6 per 100,000 person-years among under 45 year olds to 436.4 per 100,000 person-years among over 64 year olds. The incidence rates for ageat-diagnosis groups were significantly greater than those estimated for the general Spanish population. Curative surgery, performed for 62 of 74 operable tumors, increased the probability of patient survival since a diagnosis of CRC, from 31.6% to 75.7% at 2 years, and from 15.8% to 48.6% at 5 years, compared to patients with inoperable tumors. Our results suggest that the incidence of CRC among HT patients is greater than in the general population, increasing with age at HT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxia 36 (SCA36) is caused by hexanucleotide repeat expansion in the NOP56 gene. Objectives: To assess frequency, clinical and genetic features of SCA36 in Eastern Spain. Methods: NOP56 expansion was tested in a cohort of undiagnosed cerebellar ataxia families (n = 84). Clinical characterization and haplotype studies were performed. Results: SCA36 was identified in 37 individuals from 16 unrelated families. It represented 5.4% of hereditary ataxia patients. The majority were originally from the same region and displayed a shared haplotype. Mean age at onset was 52.5 years. Non‐ataxic features included: hypoacusis (67.9%), pyramidal signs (46.4%), lingual fasciculations/atrophy (25%), dystonia (17.8%), and parkinsonism with evidence of dopaminergic denervation (10.7%). Conclusions: SCA36 is a frequent cause of hereditary ataxia in Eastern Spain, and is associated with a strong founder effect. SCA36 analysis should be considered prior to other studies, especially in AD presentations. Parkinsonism reported here broadens SCA36 clinical spectrum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Students' ability to evaluate emotionally challenging situations and identify effective strategies for managing emotions in themselves and others was negatively related to poor classroom social behavior across three studies. These studies, involving 463 students from two Spanish high schools and one American university, examined indicators of adaptation to school based on teacher ratings and official school records. Relationships between the ability to manage emotions, measured with a situational judgment test, and indicators of social adaptation to school remained significant or marginally significant after controlling for demographic factors, personality traits, and indicators of cognitive ability. These findings suggest that emotion regulation knowledge and skills that can be taught explain important aspects of socio-emotional adaptation to school over and above other relevant constructs. Training is a key tool for community development processes in rural areas. This training is made difficult by the characteristics of the rural areas and their population. Furthermore, the methods used by traditional training bodies are not adapted to the peculiarities of these areas. This article analyses the training methodology used by the Institute of Community Development, Cuenca (IDC Cuenca). For 25 years, this association has been applying a training method specifically conceived and designed for sparsely populated rural areas. This methodology, known as "training/development" is characterised by the implementation of a professional project, the creation of work groups, adaptation and flexibility. The results show that this type of training is a tool for promoting and developing human resources; a catalyst for starting economic and personal promotion projects; and a means for involving the rural population in community development processes. The Spanish labor market is currently an example of a flexible labor market. However, it involves a set of detrimental conditions for its workforce, such as lower employability in the labor market and underemployment (i.e. over-qualification and underemployment in time). In this study, we assume that all these conditions promote higher job instability, which is especially serious for the younger population. Hence, the present study aims to examine, on the one hand, how these specific labor conditions affect younger employees' concerns about job loss or job insecurity and, on the other, how this job insecurity can affect their current job performance and the future development of their career. The study sample was composed of 3000 Spanish younger employees. Results showed a significant relationship between employability and underemployment and job insecurity, as well as a significant association between job insecurity and work involvement. Indeed, the relationship between employability and underemployment and work involvement was mediated by job insecurity. Lowemployable, overqualified and temporary young workers experience higher levels of job insecurity, which, in turn, negatively affects their work involvement. (Contains 2 tables and 1 figure.)

This article describes the experience in Spain of a specific collaboration between university teachers and school counselors, which used case-based approaches in a teacher training program. The collaboration ran for four years and involved 300 graduate students, two university teachers, and six school counselors. Three basic features enabled this collaboration: a) horizontal relationships, b) a spirit of mutual help and confidence, and c) autonomy. The outcome of the experience can be evaluated in terms of both the case-based teaching process itself and its impact on student learning and the professional development of teachers and counselors involved.

This study examined the factorial invariance and latent mean differences of scores on the Spanish version of the "Achievement Goal Tendencies Questionnaire" (AGTQ) across gender and age groups in 2022 Spanish students (51.1% boys) in grades 7 through 10. The equality of factor structures was compared using multi-group confirmatory factor analyses. Measurement invariance for the correlated three-factor model of the AGTQ was found across gender and age samples. Analyses of latent mean differences revealed that girls exhibited higher means than boys on the Learning Goals and Performance Goals scale scores, whereas boys showed a higher mean than girls on the Social Reinforcement Goals scale score. No differences in latent means were found between the age groups on any of the AGTQ scales. The findings are discussed in terms of the implications for use of the AGTQ with Spanish secondary education students. (Contains 6 tables and 1 figure.)

Introduction: School anxiety is often defined as a set of symptoms grouped into cognitive, psychophysiological and motor responses emitted by an individual in school situations that can be perceived as threatening and/or dangerous. School anxiety may be influenced--among other relevant school variables - by the perception of social climate and the daily violence witnessed by students at school. The aim of this study is to identify whether there are different combinations of school anxiety-provoking situations which give rise to different anxious profiles. Furthermore, it claims to verify whether there are differences between these profiles in terms of the variables: perception of social climate and peer violence. Method: The sample consists of 365 high school students. School anxiety was measured using the School Anxiety Inventory; the social climate was measured with the School Social Climate Questionnaire and peer violence with the Daily School Violence Questionnaire. Results: Cluster analyses have identified three profiles of school anxiety. The results showed statistically significant differences among the three anxiety profiles in the following variables: (1) teacher climate (low and high anxiety) and (2) personal experience of suffering violence (low and medium anxiety; low and high anxiety). The differences were of low-to-moderate intensity. Discussion and Conclusion: The findings of this study are relevant because they provide a more comprehensive analysis of school anxiety and differences in other relevant variables in an educational context, such as the school social climate and peer violence. In Spain, the presence of women in decision-making positions and in positions of power is not proportional to the total number of women within the field of education. Women have encountered personal and professional barriers in their advancement to the principalship; however, significant and substantive changes to school policy are revealed when examining the experiences of those who achieve principal status. This article discusses the findings from a one-year qualitative multi-case study of women principals' roles in educational leadership and their creation of policy for educational change. Using in-depth interviews, observations, and field notes, the study focused on eight women working as principals and how the school community perceived their work, which lead to change within their schools. Despite the difficulties the principals encountered, this study found the women's experiences to be positive in several areas: school change; self-renewal and growth; relational and social networks with faculty; students and school community; and democratic and participatory styles of leadership as successful ingredients of their work. This study examined the reliability and validity evidence drawn from the scores of the Spanish version of the Achievement Goal Tendencies Questionnaire (AGTQ) using a sample of 2,022 (51.1% boys) Spanish students from grades 7 to 10. Confirmatory factor analysis replicated the correlated three-factor structure of the AGTQ in this sample: Learning Goals (LG), Social Reinforcement Goals (SRG), and Performance Goals (PG). The AGTQ yields relatively reliable scores for Spanish students. Logistic regression analyses were used to provide additional validity evidence of AGTQ scores on academic success (general, Spanish, and mathematics). Results indicated that general academic success was 15% and 5% more likely every time that scores on LG and PG scales increased 1 point, respectively, although general academic success was 9% less likely every time that scores on SRG scale increased 1 point. These results were similar for Spanish and mathematics. However, the score on the LG scale did not forecast success in both subjects. (Contains 3 tables.)

The London Communique of the Conference of Ministers responsible for Higher Education in the countries participating in the Bologna Process (2007) emphasized as priorities for 2009 the "action taken at national level to promote the mobility of students and staff, including measures for future evaluation". Certain responsibilities are incumbent upon the various member states while others fall to the universities themselves. The present study explores student perceptions of the policies and programmes to encourage this mobility in four public universities in Spain, representative in their variety, size, and level of student mobility. The aim of the study was to determine how students view the usefulness and the importance of the information and the mobility programmes offered by their universities, as well as the value of the various sources and contents of such information. The results are based on a survey administered to 2427 students who had already made the decision to go abroad the following academic year and who were in the process of being selected and completing the final application details before departure. The results provide interesting information on the need for universities to enhance their strategies and policies to facilitate student mobility. (Contains 7 tables and 5 figures.)

This paper presents a novel instructional model for e-learning and an evaluation study to determine the effectiveness of this model for teaching Java language programming to information technology specialists working for the Spanish Public Administration. This is a general-purpose model that combines objectivist and constructivist learning theories and is based on the concept of learning objective. The purpose of the evaluation study is to find out whether the results of using this distance learning instructional model to teach this subject are comparable to learning in a traditional face-to-face classroom, with the plus of eliminating travel and maintenance expenses of the public servants attending the course and also saving time. The learners, selected at random to participate in this study, were divided into three groups depending on the type of teaching/learning they received: traditional classroom, distance learning with virtualized course contents and distance learning based on the proposed instructional model. The results indicate that the grades and satisfaction levels were similar for learners taught using the proposed instructional model and learners taught in the traditional classroom. Moreover, they were substantially better than for distance learning with virtualized contents, although the mean course learning time is greater. (Contains 4 tables and 3 figures.)

This article explores the relationships between certain cognitive and emotional factors (sensation seeking, impulsivity, self-esteem, anxiety sensitivity and loneliness) and regular consumption of alcohol and other drugs by a university population from Almeria (South Spain). During 2005 and 2006 students were given a battery of questionnaires related to these personality variables and the substances they had consumed. After filling out the psychometric tests, the participants gave a urine sample which was then analyzed. The findings stress the role of sensation seeking and loneliness, understood as social maladjustment, in the regular consumption of alcohol and other drugs, in both men and women.

The study of language attitudes has proved vital in order to guarantee the success of any proposal for language teaching in schools. Nevertheless, in Aragon, a region of Northern Spain close to the Pyrenees, three regional languages coexist. The number of studies on this phenomenon is scarce, and we can only associate this lack of research with the absence of enthusiasm with which language attitudes have traditionally been treated. In this context, based on a sample of students in one of the four years of compulsory secondary education, the study has two objectives. First, attitudes towards the three languages present in the area are explicated (i.e. Aragonese, Spanish and Catalan), and are also approached in relation to the two other foreign languages that are more present in the curriculum (French and English). Secondly, the influence of some of the main factors causing these attitudes is analysed. A great diversity in the different linguistic areas of Aragon can be observed in our data, and this should make us reflect upon future alternatives for schools located in areas traditionally considered as Aragonese, Spanish or Catalan speaking. In the article we compare the approaches of 3 in-service teachers and 3 student teachers when they tried to solve a verbal arithmetic problem in the classroom. Each interaction was studied using a System of Analysis that takes into account the cognitive processes involved in the solution of a mathematic problem and describes the interaction at different levels showing what is done and to what degree teachers and/or pupils are responsible for what is done. The results of the study suggest that both groups of teachers are different in how they direct the student's attention toward the essential aspects implied in the resolution of word problem. On the one hand, the in-service teachers guaranteed students' understanding of the problem before dealing with the solution, while students teachers only did so when pupils committed errors. On the other hand, the in-service teachers allowed a high level of student participation, while student teachers took a more prominent role so children's participation was lower. The Questionnaire about Interpersonal Difficulties for Adolescents (QIDA) is a self-report instrument designed to measure adolescents' perceived interpersonal anxiety levels in a wide range of relationships with people of different ages, genders, levels of authority, and levels of intimacy and in several contexts: family, school, friends, opposite sex peers, and situations in the streets, shops, and public buildings. The QIDA provides important information for adolescents, educational and clinical psychologists, and researchers. This instrument can be used as a screening measure to identify social situations and relationships that adolescents find troublesome so that important target areas for social skills training programs can be ascertained. Thus, the QIDA can be used as a counseling tool for adolescent advising and for interpersonal difficulties remediation or prevention programs in a variety of clinical, educational, and research settings, including schools, counseling and mental health centers, alcohol and other drug units for youth, correctional and social service agencies, and research centers. In this study, the factor structure of the QIDA was examined across gender and ethnicity in samples of Spanish and Chinese adolescents using multigroup confirmatory factor analyses. Partial invariance was observed across gender in the Spanish sample and across ethnic groups. Measurement invariance was found across gender in the Chinese sample. (Contains 3 tables and 1 figure.)

The present work discusses, firstly, different dimensions that characterize the use of analogies in the classroom. Foremost among these are the pupil's level of activity and the degree of monitoring carried out by the teacher. Secondly, the routines declared by a group of science teachers (n = 73), when they described their classroom activity in using analogies, are analysed. It was found that most of the teachers corresponded to traditional models for the use of analogies, or, in the best of cases, to models based on meaningful learning by transmission/reception of previously elaborated knowledge. Finally, some implications for teaching and teacher education are discussed. (Contains 7 tables and 3 figures.)

The relationship between the construct of mental attention and "giftedness" is not well established. Gifted individuals could make effective use of their executive functions and this could be related to their mental attentional capacity. The dialectic constructivist model developed by Pascual-Leone introduced the concept of mental attention or "effort", relating it to mental capacity. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the measurement of mental capacity (M-measurement) is differential for a group of children with high IQs. 110 students between 4 and 18 years old participated in this study. Some were Gifted (n=70) and others Non-Gifted (n=40). Wechsler-R Scale and the Figural Intersection Test were administered to all participants. An interesting pattern was found in the younger groups. The gifted scored higher than the non-gifted in the Figural Intersection Test and much higher than their theoretical M. The non-gifted scored quite close to their theoretical M (based on age). In the oldest group, the gifted again achieved higher scores, but now they scored at the theoretical level, and the non-gifted underperformed. (Contains 2 figures and 3 tables.)

Trait psychology implicitly assumes consistency of the personal traits. Mischel, however, argued against the idea of a general consistency of human beings. The present article aims to design a statistical procedure based on an adaptation of the pi* statistic to measure the degree of intraindividual consistency independently of the measure used. Three studies were carried out for testing the suitability of the pi* statistic and the proportion of subjects who act consistently. Results have shown the appropriateness of the statistic proposed and that the percentage of consistent individuals depends on whether test items can be assumed as equivalents and the number of response alternatives they contained. The results suggest that the percentage of consistent subjects is far from 100%, and this percentage decreases when items are equivalent. Moreover, the greater the number of response options, the lesser the percentage of consistent individuals. (Contains 2 figures and 5 tables.)

A new psychological test battery was designed to provide a much-needed comprehensive tool for assessing the perceptual and cognitive abilities of visually handicapped children in using active touch. The test materials consist of raised-line, raised-dot, raised-surface shapes and displays, and familiar and novel 3-D objects. The research used 20 sub-tests, ranging from tactual discrimination, systematic scanning and shape coding to short-term and longer-term memory tasks. The research sample consisted of 119 participants. Fifty-nine were blind and visually impaired schoolchildren, aged from 3 to 16 years (the total visually handicapped population of the region), and 60 sighted school children, matched to them on age, gender and social class, living in the Madrid region (capital and province). The dual aim here is to report the reliability, validity and relation to age and visual status of the sub-tests, and to use the data to refine and shorten the test battery further for more general use. We assessed the correlation between the biomarkers of lower limb atherosclerosis (eg, ankle-brachial index [ABI]) and of carotid atherosclerosis (eg, common carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and presence of atherosclerotic plaque) in a population-based cohort from Girona (Northwest Spain) recruited in 2010. Ankle-brachial index and carotid ultrasound were performed in all participants. Generalized additive multivariable models were used to adjust a regression model of common carotid IMT on ABI. Logistic regression multivariable models were adjusted to assess the probability of carotid plaque in individuals with peripheral artery disease. We included 3307 individuals (54.2% women), mean age 60 years (standard deviation 11). Two patterns of association were observed between subclinical biomarkers of atherosclerosis at the lower limb and carotid artery. Ankle-brachial index and common carotid IMT showed a linear trend in men [beta coefficient (95% confidence interval) =-.068 (−.123; −.012); P =.016]. Women with peripheral artery disease presented with high risk of atherosclerotic plaque at the carotid artery [Odds ratio (95% confidence interval) = 2.61, (1.46; 4.69); P =.001]. Men showed a significant linear association between ABI levels and common carotid IMT values. Purpose: This paper aims to propose and examine the relationship between students' perception of service quality and dimensions and their academic achievement. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the resource-based view, a conceptual relationship between service quality and dimensions and academic achievement is proposed and tested with a sample of 380 STEM university students who attended secondary schools in a region of Spain. Findings: Service quality and four of its dimensions (i.e. empathy, reliability, responsiveness and assurance/confidence) could contribute to students' academic achievement. The expected effect of tangible elements on academic achievement was not supported by the data. Results were controlled for student's personal factors that have proven important in explaining academic achievement in previous studies (i.e. need for cognition, need for emotion and self-efficacy). Originality/value: Previous research has extensively studied factors affecting students' academic achievement. However, the direct relationship between service quality and student's academic achievement has been rarely proposed and examined. Service quality has been mostly viewed as a precursor of student satisfaction and loyalty. A group of teacher educators adopted collaborative teamwork to cope with a too large teaching load. The authors reflect on the experience of working together in a critical friendship group, highlighting the role that conversation plays in this process. The experience of a collaborative approach and its impact on teaching and professional development is evaluated in terms of the teaching process and the professional development of the teachers involved.
