This article explores the political, religious, and ideological backdrop to psychology and pedagogy under Franco's dictatorship. To this end, it analyses the important research carried out between 1940 and 1944 by the psychologist and pedagogue José J. Jover y Piquer into the intelligence, mentality, and moral judgement of a large number of abandoned and vulnerable postwar children. The article demonstrates how, although the approach adopted by Piquer was a scientific one – with the usual aims, techniques, and methods – the research contents were subordinated to ideological and religious considerations and aimed to determine the extent to which these children could be re-educated and integrated into the new regime. Thus, psychology became the scientific packaging for studies that were eminently ideological and politically subservient, turning pedagogy into a key instrument of the biopolitics aimed at building Franco's New Spain. Since the university education of psychologists began in Spain in 1954, the history of psychology course has been included in the curriculum. In the first few years, only half of the curricula offered the course. From 1973 to 2007, the universities' organization and regulation underwent successive reforms that involved changes in the curricula, decreeing specific national guidelines for each degree and establishing a minimum set of common required courses, called core courses, including the history of psychology. In 2007, the European Higher Education Area was set up, transforming the 5-year bachelor's degrees into 4-year degrees and eliminating the required guidelines, with each university being able to define the content of their curricula. The Dean's Conference for Psychology agreed on some recommendations related to core courses, which continued to include the history of psychology and were adopted by the majority of the universities. In 2015, the government established a new national regulation that makes it possible for each university to voluntarily reduce the length of the bachelor's degree to 3 years. Some psychology historians believe that this hypothetical reduction in the length of the degree, along with the already existing general tendency to prioritize applied or practical courses over basic or fundamental ones, could produce an appropriate scenario for the disappearance of the history of psychology course in some universities. The aim of this paper is to show the historical importance of the Instituto de Ciencias del Hombre for the development of psychology in Spain. The Instituto de Ciencias del Hombre was a private institution which gave support to Spanish psychology in a very crucial moment of its history. As identified in the analysis of primary sources, the Institute promoted the attractiveness of psychology in a growing number of potential customers. Indeed, while Spain was going through a political transition from dictatorship to democracy, and psychology was striving for its academic, scientific and professional consolidation, the Instituto de Ciencias del Hombre organized a number of activities which greatly contributed to stimulate an interest in psychological knowledge. The work of the Instituto, however, has gone inexplicably unnoticed by most of the historians devoting themselves to the institutional analysis of Spanish psychological history. This article discusses the history and development of psychological spiritualism in Spain during the mid-19th century. The author comments on the relationship between this concept and philosophy, medical theory, and criminology. He also considers the characteristics involved in psychological spiritualism, including consciousness, morality, and personal freedom. The involvement of psychological spiritualism in 19th century Spanish culture and civilization is examined and its impact on positivism and experimental science is also explored.

The article discusses the Archivo Histórico de la Facultad de Psicología (the Historical Archive for the History of Psychology) at the Unviersidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM, Spain), highlighting the archive's content, sources, and history. The archive was assembled by professors of the Faculty of Psychology at UAM for research purposes and features manuscripts, books, and other documentation on the history of psychology in Spain in the 19th and 20th centuries. The article presents information on the Arxiu i Seminari d' Història de la Psicologia of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Archive and Seminar for the History of Psychology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona) in Barcelona, Spain, which houses archival materials pertaining to Spanish psychologists. The influence of experimental psychologist Ramón Turró on the establishment of the Archive is described. Along with the works of Turró, the collection also holds work by other Spanish psychologists such as August Pi i Sunyer, Emilio Mira, and Jeroni Moragues. Donations of papers to the Archive are discussed.

Spanish psychology has developed greatly in the last decades, both in academic and professional aspects. But its history during the 20th century includes not only positive periods but also others clearly regressive, which impeded scientific work and tried to return to a more philosophical orientation. Since the establishment of a psychology degree in the country, a great expansion has taken place, and other significant achievements have been made by some emigre Spanish psychologists in LatinAmerican countries after being reinstalled there after a civil war that strongly affected the evolution of contemporary Spain. The article discusses news items for the Society for the History of Psychology as of August 2014. The Brazilian Society for the History of Psychology (SBHP) was established in October 2013, with its headquarters in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The Spanish Society for the History of Psychology (SEHP) elected José M. Gondra of the University of the Basque Country as its president. The Canadian psychologist Mary J. Wright died on April 23, 2014.
