This study is part of a larger R&D project that analyses the quality of training and the digital skills taught during the preservice training of teachers, as well as during the master's degree dissertation (TFM in Spanish) in the Degree in Education in Spain. The study is descriptive and exploratory in nature. It combines mixed techniques that are used on four sources: (1) External practice guides and dissertations (TFM) from 37 Spanish Faculties of Education; (2) interviews with a sample of 7 Master coordinators; (3) A survey on 94 university tutors from the above-mentioned universities, in charge of trainee teachers' external practice and dissertations (TFM); and (4) Interviews with 46 school tutors from practice schools. Results show the persistence of different situations and a lack of definition in the guidelines as well as in some teachers' perceptions that have more to do with educational models of the past. Among other aspects to improve, this degree shows a marginal use of ICT during Practicum and Dissertation phases, also a lack of assessment criteria in the guides regarding portfolios, theory/practice coordination, tutorship or prevention of plagiarism is observed in most of the studied cases.

Background: Abrocitinib, a selective JAK 1 inhibitor, was recently approved in Europe. Despite its approval, real‐world data on its efficacy and safety in treating moderate‐to‐severe atopic dermatitis (AD) remains limited. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the short‐term effectiveness and safety of abrocitinib in a real‐life setting for patients with moderate‐to‐severe AD. Methods: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study involving adult patients with moderate‐to‐severe AD who started abrocitinib treatment between May 1, 2023, and September 30, 2023, in 15 Spanish hospitals. Treatment doses were 100 or 200 mg daily, based on clinical assessment. Data collection included patient demographics, AD history, comorbidities, previous treatments, and disease severity indicators such as SCORing atopic dermatitis (SCORAD), Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI), body surface area, and Peak Pruritus NRS scores at baseline, 4, 12, and 24 weeks. Quality of life was measured using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), and safety was assessed by monitoring adverse reactions and various biochemical parameters. Results: The cohort comprised 76 patients with an average age of 33.93 years; 57.89% were male. Before abrocitinib, 36.84% were naïve to advanced therapies. The baseline mean scores were SCORAD 47.04, EASI 21.79, and DLQI 15.01. At Week 24, there were significant improvements: EASI was reduced to 2.81, and 70.58% of the patients achieved EASI 75. However, 18.42% discontinued treatment mainly due to inefficacy or adverse effects. The safety profile was favorable, with 22.37% reporting mild adverse events (AEs) and one serious case of cutaneous lymphoma. Conclusions: This first Spanish series assessing abrocitinib in real‐world conditions reveals a significant improvement in AD symptoms and quality of life in a range of severity and prior treatment failures. Summary: Objective: This study tried to examine the association between the frequency of family meals and excess weight using large and representative samples of children and adolescents from 43 countries. Methods: This cross‐sectional study used data from the Health Behaviour in School‐aged Children (HBSC), which included nationally representative samples of children and adolescents aged 10–17 years, involving a total of 155 451 participants (mean age = 13.6 years; standard deviation [SD] = 1.6; 51.4% girls). Family meal frequency was gauged through the following question: 'How frequently do you and your family typically share meals?' The possible responses were: 'never', 'less often', 'approximately once a week', 'most days' and 'every day'. The body weight and height of the participants were self‐reported and utilized to calculate body mass index (BMI). Subsequently, BMI z‐scores were computed based on the International Obesity Task Force criteria, and the prevalence of excess weight was defined as +1.31 SD for boys and + 1.24 SD for girls, with obesity defined as +2.29 SD for boys and + 2.19 SD for girls. Generalized linear mixed models were conducted to examine the associations between the frequency of family meals and excess weight or obesity. Results: The lowest predicted probabilities of having excess weight and obesity were observed for those participants who had family meals every day (excess weight: 34.4%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 31.4%–37.5%; obesity: 10.8%, 95% CI 9.0%–13.0%). This paper shows the planning, the teaching activities and the evaluation of the learning and teaching process implemented in the Chemical Process Design course at the University of Cantabria, Spain. Educational methods to address the knowledge, skills and attitudes that students who complete the course are expected to acquire are proposed and discussed. Undergraduate and graduate engineers' perceptions of the methodology used are evaluated by means of a questionnaire. Results of the teaching activities and the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed case study are discussed in relation to the course characteristics. The findings of the empirical evaluation shows that the excessive time students had to dedicate to the case study project and dealing with limited information are the most negative aspects obtained, whereas an increase in the students' self-confidence and the practical application of the methodology are the most positive aspects. Finally, improvements are discussed in order to extend the application of the methodology to other courses offered as part of the chemical engineering degree.

(1) Introduction: Correct development and growth of the dental arches and occlusion in the deciduous dentition is crucial for physiological occlusion in the permanent dentition. The present study evaluates the evolution of the terminal plane and canine occlusion class in the same children from deciduous to mixed dentition. (2) Materials and methods: The study included 257 children (164 girls and 93 boys) aged 3–5 years in the first phase and 8–10 years in the second phase. The chi-square test was used for the comparison of qualitative variables, while analysis of variance (ANOVA) or the Mann–Whitney U-test, Kruskal–Wallis test, and Wilcoxon test were used in the case of quantitative variables, as applicable. Statistical significance was considered for p < 0.05. (3) Results: The most common terminal plane in the first phase of the study was a bilateral flush plane (70%), followed by distal and mesial, with few differences between them. In the second phase, the most common terminal plane was mesial, followed by bilateral flush and distal. There were no statistically significant differences according to gender. Canine occlusion in the first phase was predominantly bilateral class I, followed by class II and class III. Similar results were recorded in the permanent dentition, except for a lesser percentage of children with canine class II. Molar occlusion in the second phase was predominantly class I, followed by half cusp class II and full cusp class II and class III. (4) Conclusions: The present study shows that knowing the age range in which maximum dental development and growth in both arches occurs may contribute to avoiding malocclusions and the possible need for orthodontic-orthopedic treatment, resulting in improved outcomes and greater stability. After 10 years of organizing the Cybertech robotics competition, this paper presents this unique and innovative educational experience of teaching engineering at Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM), Spain. Cybertech is not only a well-known robotic contest in Spain due to the "Robotaurus" bullfighting, but is also a whole academic activity spanning theory, laboratory practical lessons, seminars, tutoring, and a spectacular contest in which robots, developed by the students, compete. It is an open activity, for all students and grades, requiring knowledge of various subjects such as mechanics, microcontrollers, control, and electronics. The experience acquired has shown how this novel educational approach can boost the motivation of students, who in a real applied project effectively learn not only the particular subject matter, but also skills in teamwork, oral presentations, budget management, and so on. This is considered the flagship of innovation in education at UPM. This paper describes the evolution of Cybertech over the past 10 years, summarizes the educational experience, and provides some statistics and results as well as a perspective for future editions of the competition. The best way to learn is by having a good teacher and the best language learning takes place when the learner is immersed in an environment where the language is natively spoken. 3D multi-user virtual worlds have been claimed to be useful for learning, and the field of exploiting them for education is becoming more and more active thanks to the availability of open source 3D multi-user virtual world development tools. The research question we wanted to respond to was whether we could deploy an engaging learning experience to foster communication skills within a 3D multi-user virtual world with minimum teacher's help. We base our instructional design on the combination of two constructivist learning strategies: situated learning and cooperative/collaborative learning. We extend the capabilities of the Open Wonderland development toolkit to provide natural text chatting with non-player characters, textual tagging of virtual objects, automatic reading of texts in learning sequences and the orchestration of learning activities to foster collaboration. Our preliminary evaluation of the experience deems it to be very promising. (Contains 3 figures.)

The interoperability of educational systems, encouraged by the development of specifications, standards and tools related to the Semantic Web is limited to the exchange of information in domain and student models. High system interoperability requires that a common framework be defined that represents the functional essence of educational systems. To address this need, we developed a generic model of educational systems that we called Cognitive Ontology of Educational Systems (COES) and we encoded it as functional reference ontology. It generalizes the educational system architecture, taking into account the cognitive perspective. This framework ranges from the usual e-learning systems to complex cognitive and adaptive hypermedia systems. This article describes the part of the COES related to domain knowledge representation and proposes an implementation called Generic Educational Knowledge (GEK). The GEK model is structured in a flexible way that allows the authors to codify instructional and semantic levels as needed. In order to test its feasibility, the model was applied in a distance learning course using two educational-knowledge models, GEK and ADLSCORM, and two educational systems, a traditional Web-Based Adaptive Hypermedia System and a Rich Internet Application with dialog interaction and cognitive monitoring. The main objective of the Bologna Process is to create a "European space" for higher education that allows for comparability, compatibility, and coherence between the existing systems of higher education across Europe. This objective is commonly known as the European higher education area (EHEA). The creation of the EHEA is a new and specific challenge for higher education in Europe, one that depends upon improved faculty development and training across Europe. The integration of Spain and other European countries into European higher education more generally entails these challenges. In order for necessary changes in faculty development and training to take place, university managers and policy makers must account for designing training plans, as well the knowledge, attitudes and needs of faculty members. This investigation was undertaken with these themes in mind. Conducted in Madrid, Spain, it included 257 professors from ten different schools of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The aim of the investigation was to understand faculty knowledge and attitudes about changes in higher education in Europe. Moreover, with an eye to helping faculty members cope with the change that is accompanying the creation of EHEA, the investigators sought to understand the importance that faculty members place upon professional development and how current approaches to professional development at the university level could be improved. The results indicate a degree of ignorance regarding changes in European higher education as well as a feeling of resistance on the part of many faculty members. While many faculty members consider knowledge of change processes and adaptability to be important qualities, faculty responses also indicate a clear need for guidance if they are going to integrate new learning models and adequate coping strategies into their work in higher education.

Although lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people have achieved a great level of legal equality in Spain, social equality is still to come, especially for adolescents. This article reports results from three different studies. The first, in 2005, using a multidisciplinary approach, confirmed that homophobia is present in secondary schools in Madrid. The second, in 2006, was a small survey of LGBT teenagers' on-line postings and internet interviews; and the third, conducted in 2007, analyzed more than 4500 questionnaires completed by high school student in two Spanish towns. Both studies showed that most Spanish teenagers still consider schools not a safe place for LGBT people. (Contains 6 tables and 9 notes.)

The p.Glu109Lys variant (Glu89Lys) is a rare cause of hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv) for which clinical spectrum remains unresolved. We sought to describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of ATTR Glu89Lys amyloidosis and assess a potential founder effect in Spain. Patients with the p.Glu109Lys ATTRv variant from 14 families were recruited at 7 centres. Demographics, complementary tests and clinical course were analysed. Haplotype analysis was performed in 7 unrelated individuals. Thirty-eight individuals (13 probands, mean age 40.4 ± 13.1 years) were studied. After median follow-up of 5.1 years (IQR 1.7–9.6), 7 patients died and 7 required heart transplantation (median age at transplantation 50.5 years). Onset of cardiac and neurological manifestations occurred at a mean age of 48.4 and 46.8 years, respectively. Median survival from birth was 61.6 years and no individual survived beyond 65 years. Patients treated with disease-modifying therapies exhibited better prognosis (p < 0.001). Haplotype analysis revealed a common origin from an ancestor who lived ∼500 years ago in southeast Spain. Glu89Lys ATTRv is a TTR variant with a founder effect in Spain. It is associated with near complete penetrance, early onset and mixed cardiac and neurologic phenotype. Introduction: Brodalumab is a recombinant monoclonal antibody (IgG2) that binds with high affinity to the human interleukin‐17 (IL‐17) receptor A and blocks the biological activity of the proinflammatory cytokines IL‐17A, IL‐17F, IL‐17A/F heterodimer, and IL‐ 25, resulting in inhibition of inflammation and clinical symptoms associated with psoriasis. Its introduction has managed to increase the levels of efficacy, safety (improving that previously presented by the anti‐IL‐17 class), and survival. Material and methods: Retrospective analysis of a multicenter, observational study of real clinical practice including patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in treatment with brodalumab. This cross‐sectional analysis includes information of patients between February 2019 and February 2022. A total of five tertiary hospitals in Andalusia (Spain) participated in this study. Analyses were performed "as observed" using GraphPad Prism version 8.3.0 for Windows. Results: Our study included 85 patients, 54 men (63.5%) and 31 women (36.5%), with moderate–severe psoriasis treated with brodalumab. In order to evaluate the efficacy of brodalumab, our patients started with mean Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) values of 12.8 and body surface area (BSA) of 16.9, as well as a Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) of 15.6, highlighting that they reported that the mean baseline visual analog scale (VAS) pruritus was 6.15. On week 52, mean PASI reached 1.26 and mean BSA 2.3, showing a clear stabilization and even sustained improvement regarding results on week 12. Concerning the brodalumab survival, we obtained 85.8% persistence at week 52. Discussion: Brodalumab showed excellent results in the control of psoriasis in the mid‐term with an elevated number of patients maintaining treatment after 52 weeks. Background Interpretive front-of-pack labels (FoPLs) are supported by World Health Organization as an important policy tool to promote healthy diets. At present, various FoPLs formats co-exist in the European Union (EU). However, as part of the Farm to Fork strategy published in 2020, the European Commission stated that it would propose a single mandatory FoPL. The aim of this study was to analyze Spanish consumers' preference and objective understanding of Nutri-Score and NutrInform, two FoPLs that are currently the subject of debate in the EU. Methods In a representative sample of 1026 Spanish adults (50% women, mean age ± SD = 46 ± 14 years), objective understanding was assessed by asking participants to identify the healthiest food products in three food categories (breakfast products, breakfast cereals and added fats). The preference dimensions were tested by asking participants about the perceived helpfulness of the FoPL in discriminating the nutritional quality of food products (subjective understanding) and their overall assessment of the FoPL's ease of use, informativeness, trust and liking (perception). Results In terms of objective understanding, Nutri-Score was significantly associated with an increase in consumers' ability to identify healthier food products across all food categories compared with NutrInform [OR (odds ratio) = 19.1 [14.2–25.7], P  < 0.0001]. On the preference dimension, Nutri-Score was perceived as significantly easier to use and was more liked than NutrInform (standardized principal component analysis dimension, respectively, 0.32 ± 1.58 vs. −0.29 ± 1.66, P  < 0.0001 and 0.080 ± 1.18 vs. −0.072 ± 1.17, P  = 0.039). Conclusions This study provides new evidence to support Nutri-Score in comparison with NutrInform in Spanish consumers, on both objective understanding and preference aspects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on different theoretical underpinnings, this study seeks to identify the key factors behind the multi‐stakeholder partnerships that can contribute to the achievement of certain sustainable development goals. It also examines whether such factors are similar from the point of view of the different stakeholders involved or, by contrast, there are major differences. We explore all the partnerships involving a globally recognized provider of the infrastructure required for the use of electric vehicles in countries such as Spain. Using primary and secondary data sources, the following conclusions may be drawn from our empirical research: first, the study of the key factors behind multi‐stakeholder partnerships for sustainable development needs to be conducted from a multi‐lens perspective. Second, certain significant differences are observed in the replies regarding the importance that a sample of managers attach to the different factors informing these partnerships. Third, all the partnerships identified have a clear long‐term orientation. Finally, the term that best defines many of the linkages between stakeholders is coopetition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tildrakizumab (TIL) binds selectively to the p19 subunit of interleukin 23. Its introduction has managed to increase the levels of efficacy, safety (improving that previously presented by the anti-IL-12/23 class) and survival. Retrospective analysis of a multicenter, observational study of real clinical practice including patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in treatment with TIL. This cross-sectional analysis includes information of patients between February 2019 to February 2022. A total of three tertiary hospitals in Andalusia (Spain) participated in this study. Analyses were performed "as observed" using IBM SPSS v28 for Windows. A total of 61 patients were included in the analysis. The mean age of our patients was 49.5 years; 50.18% of the patients were female and 34.42% of the patients had a BMI greater than 30. It was notable that 44.26% of our patients had scalp involvement. Almost 35% of the patients had psoriatic arthropathy, although skin involvement was predominant. At week 52 (n = 34), 68% of the patients presented an absolute PASI equal to or less than 1. Regarding the drug survival, eight patients discontinued treatment due to inefficacy: five primary and three secondary failures, and one death due to causes not drug related showing survival of 86% at week 52. In the analysis of subgroups of patients, we found that scalp involvement determined greater survival (94%), as well as a shorter duration of the disease (91.7% vs. 84.4% in those with less than 10 years versus more than 15 years of evolution) and with a lower number of previous biological therapies (100% naïve, 90% in those who have used one line of biological therapy and 82.1% in those who have completed two or more lines of biological treatment. Tildrakizumab showed excellent results in the control of psoriasis in the mid-term with an elevated number of patients maintaining treatment after 52 weeks. Pastoral systems face increasing pressure from competing global markets, food sector industrialization, and new policies such as Europe's post-2020 Common Agriculture Policy. This pressure threatens the use of extensive sheep-grazing systems in mountain areas of low productivity but high natural value. Using information gathered at a long-term research setting in a mountainous area of the Basque Country (northern Spain), we assessed the multiple benefits of extensive dairy sheep grazing systems from multiple perspectives using indicators pertaining to ecological, socio-economic, and food quality domains. In this way, we address the benefits that would be lost if sheep grazing abandonment persists in mountain regions. Our results show that the benefits of extensive dairy sheep grazing in the research area include the production of healthy and high-quality foods and multiple ecological benefits including biodiversity conservation. Extensive dairy sheep grazing also contributes to rural development by generating employment and income in marginal, low-productivity lands that can support few economic alternatives. In particular, we found that sheep farmers who produce high-value products, such as cheese, have enhanced their economic profitability and are less dependent on public subsidies. However, careful attention to sustainable practices, support for new generations of farmers, and streamlined supply chains are required. These would contribute to ensure socio-economic benefits for farmers, avoid the ecological costs associated with grazing abandonment, and enhance ecosystem services for the whole society. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterised by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Although its aetiology remains unknown, environmental and genetic factors are involved in its development. Regarding genetics, more than 200 loci have been associated with IBD but the transferability of those signals to the Basque population living in Northern Spain, a population with distinctive genetic background, remains unknown. We have analysed 5,411,568 SNPs in 498 IBD cases and 935 controls from the Basque population. We found 33 suggestive loci (p < 5 × 10−6) in IBD and its subtypes, namely Crohn's Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC), detecting a genome-wide significant locus located in HLA region in patients with UC. Those loci contain previously associated genes with IBD (IL23R, JAK2 or HLA genes) and new genes that could be involved in its development (AGT, BZW2 or FSTL1). The overall genetic correlation between European populations and Basque population was high in IBD and CD, while in UC was lower. Finally, the use of genetic risk scores based on previous GWAS findings reached area under the curves > 0.68. In conclusion, we report on the genetic architecture of IBD in the Basque population, and explore the performance of European-descent genetic risk scores in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The contribution of metabolomic factors to the association of healthy lifestyle with type 2 diabetes risk is unknown. We assessed the association of a composite measure of lifestyle with plasma metabolite profiles and incident type 2 diabetes, and whether relevant metabolites can explain the prospective association between healthy lifestyle and incident type 2 diabetes. Methods: A Healthy Lifestyle Score (HLS) (5-point scale including diet, physical activity, smoking status, alcohol consumption and BMI) was estimated in 1016 Hortega Study participants, who had targeted plasma metabolomic determinations at baseline examination in 2001–2003, and were followed-up to 2015 to ascertain incident type 2 diabetes. Results: The HLS was cross-sectionally associated with 32 (out of 49) plasma metabolites (2.5% false discovery rate). In the subset of 830 participants without prevalent type 2 diabetes, the rate ratio (RR) and rate difference (RD) of incident type 2 diabetes (n cases = 51) per one-point increase in HLS was, respectively, 0.69 (95% CI, 0.51, 0.93), and − 8.23 (95% CI, − 16.34, − 0.13)/10,000 person-years. In single-metabolite models, most of the HLS-related metabolites were prospectively associated with incident type 2 diabetes. In probit Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression, these prospective associations were mostly driven by medium HDL particle concentration and phenylpropionate, followed by small LDL particle concentration, which jointly accounted for ~ 50% of the HLS-related decrease in incident type 2 diabetes. Conclusions: The HLS showed a strong inverse association with incident type 2 diabetes, which was largely explained by plasma metabolites measured years before the clinical diagnosis. Background: Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) tolerability and safety in multiple sclerosis (MS) has been analyzed in randomized clinical trials. Real-life studies are needed to assess possible harms of this therapy in a wider MS population. Objective: To evaluate DMF tolerability, safety and persistence in MS in a real-world setting. Methods: We conducted a multicenter prospective study of patients who started DMF, attended in 16 public hospitals of Spain. A specific database was elaborated to collect data on most frequent adverse events (AE). Regression models were used to analyze the effect of demographic and clinical characteristics on risk of AEs and DMF discontinuation. Results: We collected data of 886 patients (2681 patients/years-exposition) with median 39.5 (IQR 23, 51.5) months on DMF exposure; 25.3% were treatment naïve and 74.7% switched to DMF from other disease-modifying therapies. DMF was discontinued in 29.9% of patients, in 13.2% due to AEs and in 13.5% to inefficacy. AEs were experienced by 71.2%, being flushing the most frequent (44.1%), 5.4% developed grade III lymphopenia, without cases of grade IV. Females showed a higher risk of flushing and gastroenteric symptoms (OR 1.49, p = 0.011; OR 1.69, p = 0.001, respectively); lymphopenia was associated with older age (OR 1.04, p < 0.001), and a higher EDSS with lymphopenia (OR 1.10, p = 0.035) and DMF withdrawal (HR 1.43, p = 0.012). No safety problems were reported. Conclusions: Our findings confirm good tolerability and safety of DMF in real-world setting and suggest that women have an increased risk of AEs and higher baseline disability involves greater risk of drug discontinuation. This study seeks to investigate whether family firms are more likely to downsize their workforce than their non‐family counterparts. Drawing on socioemotional wealth approach, we first explore the effect of family presence on workforce downsizing. Furthermore, we examine the moderating role of R&D activity on the family presence–downsizing relationship. Our sample covers a panel of manufacturing SMEs in Spain over the 1993–2014 period. We find that family firms are less likely to downsize than non‐family firms. Our results also reveal a negative association between R&D activity and workforce downsizing. Finally, the relationship between family presence and downsizing is contingent upon R&D activity, that is, family firms engaged in R&D activities are less likely to downsize than non‐innovative family firms. Objective: We analyzed the preference of three psychological intervention formats—individual, group, and online—in a sample of 267 patients with a primary diagnosis of emotional disorder in Spanish public mental health settings. Method: We studied patients’ preferences considering sociodemographic characteristics, diagnoses, history of psychological treatments, number of sessions, and satisfaction with past interventions. Results: Most participants (85.4%) preferred psychological treatment in an individual format, 14.2% in group, and 0.4% online. When comparing the people who chose individual and group treatment, no demographic or clinical differences were found. The arguments against group format were the lack of privacy and expression difficulties. Regarding online format, these included being considered impersonal and ineffective. We describe here the first combined isotopic and impurities study on 27 copper artefacts found in the north‐west of Spain. This study follows previous studies on the lead isotopic composition of copper ores in three local mines that were exploited during the Bronze Age. The levels of impurities found were clearly different from ingots and axes, with ingots having much higher levels of impurities. It was not possible to differentiate the origin of the artefacts only by the impurities present. On the other hand, the lead isotopic composition indicated that all artefacts were prepared from local ores, the 'La Profunda' mine being the most probable source for most artefacts that carried out a clear radiogenic lead signature. The copper isotopic composition seemed to be able to differentiate artefacts from the 'El Aramo' mine from those from the 'El Milagro' and 'La Profunda' mines. Inorganic arsenic exposure may be associated with diabetes, but the evidence at low-moderate levels is not sufficient. Polymorphisms in diabetes-related genes have been involved in diabetes risk. We evaluated the association of inorganic arsenic exposure on diabetes in the Hortega Study, a representative sample of a general population from Valladolid, Spain. Total urine arsenic was measured in 1451 adults. Urine arsenic speciation was available in 295 randomly selected participants. To account for the confounding introduced by non-toxic seafood arsenicals, we designed a multiple imputation model to predict the missing arsenobetaine levels. The prevalence of diabetes was 8.3%. The geometric mean of total arsenic was 66.0 μg/g. The adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for diabetes comparing the highest with the lowest tertile of total arsenic were 1.76 (1.01, 3.09) and 2.14 (1.47, 3.11) before and after arsenobetaine adjustment, respectively. Polymorphisms in several genes including IL8RA, TXN, NR3C2, COX5A and GCLC showed suggestive differential associations of urine total arsenic with diabetes. The findings support the role of arsenic on diabetes and the importance of controlling for seafood arsenicals in populations with high seafood intake. Background: In Spain, listing for high-urgent heart transplantation is allowed for critically ill candidates not weanable from temporary mechanical circulatory support (T-MCS). We sought to analyse the clinical outcomes of this strategy.Methods and Results: We conducted a case-by-case, retrospective review of clinical records of 291 adult patients listed for high-urgent heart transplantation under temporary devices from 2010 to 2015 in 16 Spanish institutions. Survival after listing and adverse clinical events were studied. At the time of listing, 169 (58%) patients were supported on veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO), 70 (24%) on temporary left ventricular assist devices (T-LVAD) and 52 (18%) on temporary biventricular assist devices (T-BiVAD). Seven patients transitioned from VA-ECMO to temporary ventricular assist devices while on the waiting list. Mean time on T-MCS was 13.1 ± 12.6 days. Mean time from listing to transplantation was 7.6 ± 8.5 days. Overall, 230 (79%) patients were transplanted and 54 (18.6%) died during MCS. In-hospital postoperative mortality after transplantation was 33.3%, 11.9% and 26.2% for patients bridged on VA-ECMO, T-LVAD and T-BiVAD, respectively (P = 0.008). Overall survival from listing to hospital discharge was 54.4%, 78.6% and 55.8%, respectively (P = 0.002). T-LVAD support was independently associated with a lower risk of death over the first year after listing (hazard ratio 0.52, 95% confidence interval 0.30-0.92). Patients treated with VA-ECMO showed the highest incidence rate of adverse clinical events associated with T-MCS.Conclusion: Temporary devices may be used to bridge critically ill candidates directly to heart transplantation in a setting of short waiting list times, as is the case of Spain. The Galgo is a member of the sighthound family and is one of the most popular breeds in Spain. Several sighthound breeds have laboratory values that are outside the reference intervals established for the general population of dogs. Serum protein electrophoresis has not been studied in Galgos and they are often interpreted as if they were Greyhounds. However, recent studies suggest that each sighthound breed presents its own specific laboratory features, and the extrapolation of the information described in Greyhounds to other sighthound breeds could lead to misdiagnoses. The aims of this study were as follows: (1) to evaluate the results of serum protein electrophoresis in healthy Galgos and compare them with a control group of age- and gender-matched dogs of other breeds and (2) to determine if serum protein electrophoresis profiles in Galgos are similar to those previously reported in Greyhounds. Serum protein electrophoresis using agarose gel was measured in 30 healthy Galgos and 22 age- and gender-matched control dogs of other breeds to assess any differences. Galgos had higher albumin, β-globulins and albumin to globulin ratio and lower total globulins, α2-globulins and γ-globulins, than those in the control group. These data confirm that Galgos have breed-specific features in serum protein electrophoresis and that those values previously described in Greyhounds should not be extrapolated to Galgos. Objective: To assess the barriers that make it difficult for the health care professionals (physicians, nurses and health care managers) to achieve a better control for dyslipidemia in Spain.Methods: The study has an observational design and was performed using the modified Delphi technique. One hundred and forty-nine panel members from medicine, nursing and health care management fields and from different Spanish regions were selected randomly and were invited to participate. Individual and anonymous opinions were asked by answering a 42-items questionnaire via e-mail (two rounds were done). Level of agreement was assessed using measures of central tendency and dispersion. We analysed commonalities/differences between the three groups (Kappa index and McNemar chi-square).Results: Response rate: 81%. The agreement index was 33.3 (95% CI: 18.9-47.7). Regarding the non-compliance with therapy, it improves with patient education degree in dyslipidemia, patient motivation, the agreement on decisions with the patient and with the use of cardiovascular risk measure and it gets worse with lack of information on the objectives to achieve. Clinical inertia improves with professional's motivation, cardiovascular risk calculation, training on objectives and the use of indicators and it gets worse with lack of treatment goals.Conclusion: Different perceptions and attitudes between medicine, nursing and health care management were found. The evolution of Chlamydia trachomatis is mainly driven by recombination events. This fact can be fuelled by the coincidence in several European regions of the high prevalence of non-invasive urogenital genotypes and lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) outbreaks. This scenario could modify the local epidemiology and favor the selection of new C. trachomatis variants. Quantifying the prevalence of co-infection could help to predict the potential risk in the selection of new variants with unpredictable results in pathogenesis or transmissibility. In the 2009-2013 period, 287 clinical samples with demonstrated presence of C. trachomatis were selected. They were divided in two groups. The first group was constituted by 137 samples with C. trachomatis of the LGV genotypes, and the second by the remaining 150 samples in which the presence of LGV genotypes was previously excluded. They were analyzed to detect the simultaneous presence of non-LGV genotypes based on pmpH and ompA genes. In the first group, co-infections were detected in 10.9% of the cases whereas in the second group the prevalence was 14.6%, which is the highest percentage ever described among European countries. Moreover, bioinformatic analyses suggested the presence among men who have sex with men of a pmpH-recombinant variant, similar to strains described in Seattle in 2002. This variant was the result of genetic exchange between genotypes belonging to LGV and members of G-genotype. Sequencing of other genes, phylogenetically related to pathotype, confirmed that the putative recombinant found in Madrid could have a common origin with the strains described in Seattle. This paper analyzes the political dimension of Miguel Masriera's (1901–1981) science popularization program. In the 1920s, Masriera worked at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich – with Hermann Staudinger, the luminary of polymer chemistry – to later become a lecturer of theoretical and physical chemistry at the University of Barcelona. After living in exile in Paris, at the end of the Civil War he returned to Spain but never recovered his position. Instead, Masriera became an active popular science writer and adapted to the severe constraints of General Franco's military dictatorship (1939–1975). Inspired by the astronomer Arthur Eddington's world view, Masriera wrote and translated popular science books, and published articles in daily newspapers and journals. By examining Masriera's popular works, in particular his program for spreading “atomic culture” in Spain during the Cold War, this paper aims to contribute to the assessment of the role of science popularization in the domestic legitimization of that dictatorial regime and also its use as a vehicle for international recognition abroad. Pollen is routinely monitored, but it is unknown whether pollen counts represent allergen exposure. We therefore simultaneously determined olive pollen and Ole e 1 in ambient air in Córdoba, Spain, and Évora, Portugal, using Hirst-type traps for pollen and high-volume cascade impactors for allergen. Pollen from different days released 12-fold different amounts of Ole e 1 per pollen (both locations P < 0.001). Average allergen release from pollen (pollen potency) was much higher in Córdoba (3.9 pg Ole e 1/pollen) than in Évora (0.8 pg Ole e 1/pollen, P = 0.004). Indeed, yearly olive pollen counts in Córdoba were 2.4 times higher than in Évora, but Ole e 1 concentrations were 7.6 times higher. When modeling the origin of the pollen, >40% of Ole e 1 exposure in Évora was explained by high-potency pollen originating from the south of Spain. Abstract: This paper analyses the use of indicators for tracking the progress over time (2005–2010) of the municipal solid waste (MSW) management targets in the region of Cantabria (Northern Spain). The combined use of a set of material flow indicators together with estimations of carbon footprint (CF) is suggested. The MSW generation, the treatment of MSW (recycling, composting, incineration and landfilling), the recycling rates of glass, paper and cardboard and packaging wastes, and the landfill of bio-waste have been used as individual indicators. The main characteristics of different CF models applied to MSW management system are highlighted. Four CF models that allow indirect emissions accounting and that use a wide range of aggregated emission factors have been applied to the Cantabria MSW management system. According to the studied set of indicators based on material flows, some of the regional objectives for recycling rates have been achieved by 2010. Besides, the CF values have improved significantly in savings (−179,527tCO2e in 2005 to −310,566tCO2e in 2010) or in neat loads (74,443tCO2e in 2005 to 67,697tCO2e in 2010), depending on the CF model used. The decrease is due mainly to the implementation of the incineration plant at 2007 and the starts up of the municipal sewage sludge drying facilities. Further improvements on the MSW management indicators and additional reductions in GHGs emissions can be achieved through application of the specific actions on the Cantabria Regional Waste Plans by 2014. The analysed material flow indicators together with the CF data obtained in the present work would be useful in the regional planning decisions on the MSW management issue. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: Genetic admixture is a common caveat for genetic association analysis. Therefore, it is important to characterize the genetic structure of the population under study to control for this kind of potential bias. Results: In this study we have sampled over 800 unrelated individuals from the population of Spain, and have genotyped them with a genome-wide coverage. We have carried out linkage disequilibrium, haplotype, population structure and copy-number variation (CNV) analyses, and have compared these estimates of the Spanish population with existing data from similar efforts. Conclusions: In general, the Spanish population is similar to the Western and Northern Europeans, but has a more diverse haplotypic structure. Moreover, the Spanish population is also largely homogeneous within itself, although patterns of micro-structure may be able to predict locations of origin from distant regions. GOLPH2 gene SNP variants Rs10868366 and Rs7019241 were reported to decrease the risk of Alzheimer's disease in a recent Whole Genome Association Study. We have investigated these genetic variants in 2470 individuals from Spain to conduct an independent replication study of the proposed SNP markers. We found no evidence of association between GOLPH2 markers and susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease in our series. Scrutinizing the main activities of the Sociedad Astronomica de Barcelona (SAB), a scientific society that was founded in 1910 and lasted until 1921, this paper analyses how and why its members disseminated astronomy to society at large. Inspired by Camille Flammarion (1842-1925), and with a strong amateur character, the programme of the SAB raised interest among academic scientists, politicians, priests, navy officers, educated audiences, and positivist anticlerical writers. It rapidly conquered the public sphere through well-attended lectures, exhibitions, observations, and publications. In the context of an industrial city, which at that time was suffering serious social tensions, the popularization of astronomy transcended social and cultural boundaries. It created common ground between expert and lay knowledge, science and art, the 'natural' and the 'social', and between science and religion. In addition, it was considered as one of the only possible ways to raise the scientific level of a country such as Spain, which at that time perceived itself as peripheral, even backward, in terms of mainstream innovations in science and technology. This study analyses the evolution in large firms' strategy and structure in a new spatial and temporal context (Spain 1993-2003). The central question of this work is to determine whether transformations undergone in this country have led Spanish companies' strategies and structures to converge with those of other European countries, following the predictions of 'universalistic' theories of strategy and organization; or whether cultural/institutional effects have remained strong, following a path-dependence/cultural-lag type logic. The Spanish experience is particularly significant for theory in general because its late development and very distinctive institutional origins allow us to test theories applied before in a new country and more recent time period. Our findings show that a changing context (e.g. liberalization) has led Spanish firms to converge with those of other European economies in the pattern of strategy and structure (increasing levels of diversification and divisionalization). Thus, the findings of this study in a new context are consistent with universalistic predictions that strategies and structures will evolve towards a common model of corporate development, as Chandler postulated initially. Phenology data are sensitive data to identify how plants are adapted to local climate and how they respond to climatic changes. Modeling flowering phenology allows us to identify the meteorological variables determining the reproductive cycle. Phenology of temperate of woody plants is assumed to be locally adapted to climate. Nevertheless, recent research shows that local adaptation may not be an important constraint in predicting phenological responses. We analyzed variations in flowering dates of Olea europaea L. at different sites of Spain and Italy, testing for a genetic differentiation of flowering phenology among olive varieties to estimate whether local modeling is necessary for olive or not. We build models for the onset and peak dates flowering in different sites of Andalusia and Puglia. Process-based phenological models using temperature as input variable and photoperiod as the threshold date to start temperature accumulation were developed to predict both dates. Our results confirm and update previous results that indicated an advance in olive onset dates. The results indicate that both internal and external validity were higher in the models that used the photoperiod as an indicator to start to cumulate temperature. The use of the unified model for modeling the start and peak dates in the different localities provides standardized results for the comparative study. The use of regional models grouping localities by varieties and climate similarities indicate that local adaptation would not be an important factor in predicting olive phenological responses face to the global temperature increase. Background: The ESR1 AGATA haplotype is composed of five markers located within introns 5 and 6 of the human oestrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) gene. This haplotype has been studied in several male urogenital tract anomalies and male infertility. In one of these studies, a deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (DHW) was found for the ESR1 AGATA marker rs3020375 in two groups of healthy controls. In the present study, we investigated whether the observed DHW is caused by structural variants present within the ESR1 gene. Participants: 229 family units achieving pregnancy through assisted reproductive technologies (n = 129) or by natural means (n = 100), 2465 general Spanish population controls and 162 men with idiopathic infertility. Main outcome measurements: Segregation analyses of genetic markers in family units and case-control genetic association studies. Results: We identified a new interstitial deletion of 2244 base pairs within intron 6 of the human ESR1 gene as the cause for the observed DHW. This new variant presents a 10% allelic frequency in the general Spanish population and it is associated with idiopathic male infertility (OR = 1.51; p = 0.03). The percentage of infertile couples in which both members carried the ESR1 deletion (10.08%) was also a higher than expected value of 6% (p=0.03). Conclusions: We have characterised a novel structural variation in human ESR1 gene. The available data indicate a deleterious action of the ESR1 deletion in both male and couple fertility. On the basis of theoretical assumptions approached via the investment development path (IDP), this study examines the most important factors for and against the location decisions in foreign direct investment taken by multinational enterprises, considering host countries at very different stages of economic development (Latin American and European Union countries). We carry out different kinds of analysis on a sample of 103 firms belonging to a medium-sized country that has recently achieved the status of developed country. The results reveal that the importance that home country firm managers give to diverse location factors depends to a certain extent on the stage that each group of host countries has reached in the IDP. In line with prior research, we find that firm managers consider mainly the group of factors associated with strategic asset-seeking when deciding to locate their investments in the group of mare developed countries (European Union). In contrast, our results show that when these firm managers choose the group of less developed countries (Latin America), social and cultural factors play a more determinant role, thus suggesting the importance of historical and cultural ties between the home and host countries. The present study shows the results of monitoring the atmospheric pollen in the atmosphere of an area of natural vegetation, the Hornachuelos Natural Park, Cordoba, southern Spain, during a six years (1998–2003). Special attention was paid in the seasonal and intra-diurnal characteristics of airborne allergenic pollen. During this period, 31 pollen types were described, some of them rare in aerobiological analysis. High concentrations of allergenic pollen from entomophilous species and from areas at a long distance were found. Significant differences between pollen spectrum and pollen concentration of the natural study area and the surrounding cities were detected. Intra-diurnal pattern from trees surrounding the trap presented a clear peak at midday/afternoon. Pollen from taxa comprising many species and from species at far locations showed a smoother intra-diurnal pattern. The main objective of this study is to analyse the strategic and organizational evolution of large firms in a current time period and within a specific geographical context (Spain). In order to achieve this purpose, the paper combines the Chandlerian programme with processual analysis. We draw on documentary sources (annual reports, company histories, business directories and so on) and interviews. We have found that in the model of corporate development some characteristics of new organizational structures will coexist with some features of old ones. In line with previous studies our findings highlight the existence of the ‘multidivisional network’ but, most importantly, our findings also reflect the emergence of a new kind of organizational form that we call ‘holding network’. The ‘holding network’ is more decentralized, both strategically and operationally, than the multidivisional form. However, its level of decentralization is less than in the N-form. Furthermore, whereas the multidivisional form is a hierarchy, the ‘holding network’ emphasizes the communication among people of different levels. This multilevel communication differs from that in the N-form. Apart from the horizontal communication in the same level there is vertical and horizontal communication between different levels. We conclude by emphasizing the need to explore in future empirical studies to what extent these patterns and new organizational forms should be considered as a transitory or consolidated phenomenon. Purpose: To assess the endothelial cell decrease after the use of sodium hyaluronate 0.3% and lidocaine hydrochloride 2% (VisThesia) to determine whether the addition of lidocaine 1% to sodium hyaluronate 1.5% makes the solution more toxic to the cornea. Setting: Instituto de Oftalmologia Avanzada, Madrid, Spain, and Unita Operative Oculistica, Cesena, Italy. Methods: VisThesia is an ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD) that incorporates lidocaine 1% to provide better comfort to patients under topical anesthesia. Fifty eyes 50 patients were operated on following the same patient selection and surgical technique. After the povidone–iodine (Betadine) ocular asepsis, 1 full ampoule of VisThesia Topical was applied over the corneal surface. The intracameral product was used as a routine OVD during the phacoemulsification procedure. The endothelium of the central cornea was examined preoperatively and 3 months after surgery using a noncontact endothelium microscope. Results: At the last follow-up visit, the mean best corrected visual acuity was 0.88 ± 0.18 and the mean manifest SE was −0.36 ± 1.78 D. The mean endothelial cell density had decreased from 2363.57 ± 435.4 cells/mm2 preoperatively to 2222.6 ± 537.69 cells/mm2 at 3 months. These values are comparable with results obtained in other investigations published in the literature using other, similar OVD. Conclusions: The results observed in this investigation indicate that the addition of lidocaine to the sodium hyaluronate in VisThesia does not induce additional toxicity nor does it result in increased endothelial cell loss when compared with other, similar OVDs. In this study we analyzed the pattern of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) accumulation in liver (as a detoxifying organ) and muscle (as the most important tissue for human consumption) of brown trout (Salmo trutta) and European eel (Anguilla anguilla) caught in two wild Spanish rivers where both species are usually angled for human consumption. Cd, Pb, and Cu accumulated preferentially in the liver of both species. Hg accumulated both in the liver and muscle in brown trout, whereas it accumulated preferentially in muscle in European eel. Both high metal content and preferential accumulation of Hg in muscle suggest that European eel is more harmful than brown trout for human consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phenological observations in olive tree (Olea europaea L.), on the first reproductive phase (budburst) and the winter chilling temperatures required for its onset, were analysed over a 4-year period (1998-2001). Research was carried out on two different cultivars growing in two Mediterranean olive-growing areas: `Ascolana' in central Italy and `Picudo' in southern Spain. The two main objectives of the study were: (1) to evaluate the different amounts of winter chilling, and their relationship with the budburst dates in outdoor olive plantations; and (2) to test the validity in the study areas of two chilling calculation methods, the Aron and the Utah method. Results show that for the Spanish cultivar the average chilling requirement of 997 h was approximately half of that recorded for the Italian cultivar (1848 h). Also, the year-to-year variability in chilling accumulation and the reproductive development date was observed to be higher in the Spanish area than in the Italian one, indicating a more consistent and predictable winter chilling response in the latter. As regards the validity of the methods, the Aron method seems to be more appropriate for use in warmer places, since it yielded better results in the Spanish site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here I report on the reproductive characteristics of an insular population of the lacertid lizard Podarcis hispanica, which inhabits the Cíes Islands, an archipelago formed by three small islands off the northwest coast of Spain. The clutch characteristics of the population were investigated on the basis of clutches laid by pregnant females captured on these islands in 1999 and 2000. Other data were obtained principally by mark-recapture experiments. The egg-laying cycle of live females was determined by ventral palpation. Enlarged follicles were detected from March to July, and the laying period extended from April to the second half of July. The larger females initiated reproductive activities early in the season and produced up to three clutches annually, whereas the smaller individuals laid only a single clutch. Reproductive performance was related mainly to female size. Clutch size, individual egg mass, clutch mass, and hatchling size increased with the length of the females. I also examined the extent to which the reproductive characteristics of this insular population of P hispanica diverged from those in other populations of the same species. I found no pronounced differences between these populations and other mainland populations of the same species of like body size. Several hypotheses may be proposed to explain the lack of major differences in reproductive characteristics (egg size and number). The first has to do with the relatively short length of time that this population has been isolated, and, therefore, it would still be too early for any divergence to have manifested itself. The aim of the present paper is to study the influence of air temperature on the start of Quercus pollination in Córdoba (Andalusia, Spain). Sixteen years of pollen counts were used. The start date of the pollen season in this period varied between 26[sup th] February and 7[sup th] April. Chilling requirements and heat accumulation were taken into account although no significant correlation between chilling hours and the start date was observed. Five different predictive methods based on heat accumulation were compared in this paper: 1) Number of days over a threshold; 2) Heat Units (accumulated daily mean temperature after deducting a base temperature); 3) Growing Degrees Days (Snyder 1988), as a measure of physiological growing time; 4) Accumulated maximum temperatures; and 5) Mean maximum temperature. Results indicated that the optimum base temperature for heat accumulation was 11 C[sup o]. This threshold was used in the first three methods mentioned above. Good statistical results were obtained with the five methods, yielding high levels of explanation (p~99%). Nevertheless, the most accurate method appeared to be the Growing Degree Days (GDD[sup o]) method, which indicated that a mean of 127.3 GDD[sup o] must be accumulated from the end of the chilling period up to the beginning of the Quercus pollen season in Córdoba (South West Spain). • A heuristic algorithm for water distribution networks optimization is presented. • A real case study is shown, with data from a water distribution network in Spain. • The results for the case under study indicate substantial construction savings. • The algorithm displays a significant reduction in the number of iterations when optimizing benchmark cases. • The algorithm can be useful for optimal cost design of large water distribution networks. In this work, we put forward a new algorithm for minimizing the total cost of gravity-fed water distribution networks (WDN) by optimally choosing pipe diameters. Our approach is based on network theory and heuristic procedures and aims at overcoming a number of limitations found in the current scientific literature. WDN optimization problems belong to those that are discrete, non-linear and non-convex, making the use of standard optimization algorithms inefficient. Furthermore, resorting to metaheuristic search techniques to test many different solutions has an exceedingly expensive computational cost, due to the inherent complexity of the problem. Here we present an efficient heuristic algorithm that circumvents these limitations, exploiting detailed aspects, such as the specific network topology. In order to check the capability of the algorithm in a realistic setting, we have developed and analyzed a mathematical model of a water distribution network in a Spanish municipality, considerably larger than those addressed in previous works. Our numerical results indicate significant potential construction savings over current design practices, which justifies the interest of our approach in addressing this class of optimization problems.
