Abstract

The article explores the impact of economic development and health disparities on the fertility decline of whites and African Americans in the U.S. South. Emphasis is given to topics such as the use of demographic transition theory in research, maternal health problems and risks for women during childbearing, and the influence of plantation housing, sanitation and nutrition.
