This article analyzes Chineseness in premodern Vietnam and its influence on Vietnam's foreign policy toward China and Southeast Asia both past and present. The term Chineseness refers to the practice and preservation of Confucian ideas and values in Vietnam, which arguably consists of the Mandate of Heaven and Confucian Orthodoxy concepts and their subsequent orthodox lineage issue. Being considered culturally closer to China than Korea and Japan, Vietnam, throughout history, has relied on these concepts to position itself strategically and navigate its relations vis-à-vis China and other smaller countries in Southeast Asia. Vietnamese courts used to question the legitimacy and orthodox lineage of the Manchu-led Qing dynasty because they imagined themselves as part of the Sinic world. The sense of superiority over Manchus and of being the guardian of Sinic civilization reached a climax during the Nguyen dynasty, in part shaping Vietnam's foreign policy toward China and other Southeast Asian countries at that time. In addition, this deep-seated Chineseness also helps Vietnam's decision-makers to understand contemporary China, and subtly guides the creation of Vietnam's foreign policy today. This paper provides a review of the literature on ride-hailing applications (RHA) in Southeast Asia (SEA) to enhance the understanding of RHA's impacts on the urban transportation sector and to inform related planning and regulatory efforts in the context of developing countries. The conceptual framework is based on the stakeholder approach, which identifies three groups of stakeholders: the demand-side, the supply-side, and the public-sector stakeholders. A search on scholarly databases yielded 49 related articles. The results of the review illustrate certain similarities between RHA services in SEA with those reported from developed countries, such as the socio-economic profile of the users. However, several observations unique to the SEA context were also revealed, including (1) the dominance of motorcycles; (2) commuting as the main RHA trip purpose; (3) a higher frequency of RHA use; and (4) a significant proportion of full-time RHA drivers. The review also highlighted research gaps in the literature of RHA in SEA, particularly on how RHA can influence travelers' behavior, its effects on the incumbent transport operators, and its environmental impacts. To meet financial requirement for infrastructure development, the Public–Private Partnership (PPP) mechanism has been applied in a range of nations as a promising solution. However, unpredicted collapses that are linked to PPP applications have been experienced worldwide despite scientific protocols and concentrated efforts from engaged sectors. Numerous academic works have attempted to minimize PPP failures by exploring the area of risk management. However, there are limited efforts focusing on Southeast Asia. Previous studies in these markets have mainly identified risks, rather than in-depth analysis of root causes of failure, or proposing practical solution. This paper, by carrying out an evidence-based analysis of the Southeast Asia experience with an intensive focus on emerging markets, analyzes critical reasons and their underlying connections that result in PPP failure. Research outcomes also suggest using constructive strategies promoting a regulatory framework to diminish collapses that affect drivers and so enable the restoration of PPPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim Mangroves are intertidal plants with sea-dispersed propagules, hence their population structure can offer valuable insights into the biogeographical processes driving population subdivision in coastal species. In this study, we used molecular markers and ocean circulation simulations to examine the effects of ocean currents and land masses on the genetic structure of the major mangrove species Rhizophora mucronata. Location Southeast Asia. Methods We assessed the genetic structure of 13 R. mucronata populations from continental Southeast Asia and Sumatra using 10 microsatellite loci. We first examined the relative effects of geographical distance and land mass (the Malay Peninsula) in shaping the genetic structure of R. mucronata in Southeast Asia. We then characterized the genetic structure of R. mucronata and compared it to the simulated ocean circulation patterns within our study region. Results Despite the low genetic diversity, significant genetic structuring was detected across R. mucronata populations. Contrary to observations on other mangrove species, genetic differentiation in R. mucronata was not found across the coasts of the Malay Peninsula, nor was it correlated with geographical distance. Instead, the most distinct genetic discontinuity was found at the boundary between the Andaman Sea and the Malacca Strait, and this can be explained by the prevailing ocean currents in this region. Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a crucial staple crop, and provides carbohydrate energy to more than half a billion people in the tropics. Cassava mosaic disease (CMD) is the most important disease of cassava in Africa. Since Sri Lanka Cassava Mosaic Virus (SLCMV) was first reported in South East Asia in 2015, establishing sustainable solutions to CMD has become a top priority for the cassava program at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and its partners. In the present study, we screened two populations for CMD resistance: VNM142, 142 clones collected from farms throughout Vietnam, and CIAT102, 102 clones resistant to CMD or mites, which were introduced from CIAT. High broad-sense heritability was observed in all the trials (>0.80). From the population VNM142, eight clones showed high CMD resistance with CMD severity scores less than 2.0. Two resistant clones had the same DNA fingerprinting with the accessions CR63 (PER262 or TAI9) and KM57 (VNM8) in the genebank, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first report of CMD resistance in the genebank at CIAT. We also used the two populations to validate the CMD markers S12_7926132 and S14_4626854. Both markers explained 51% of the population variance in the segregating population CIAT102, but only 11% in the diverse population VNM142. Thus, we concluded that the two CMD markers could not be used to select for CMD resistance in diverse populations, but could predict the CMD resistance in segregating populations when the susceptible parents do not have resistant marker alleles and the resistance of the CMD2 donors is confirmed.
