Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting compound and a mutagenic agent that poses health hazards to living organisms, making it a global contaminant. Several remediation techniques have been reported in the literature, however, a mixed-method science mapping analysis of research trends on BPA is still lacking. The present study aimed to investigate global research trends in BPA remediation. Published research papers on BPA remediation indexed in Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus between 1992 and 2021 were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively using science mapping algorithms including Rstudio, bibliometrix package and R Version 4.2.1. The thematic areas were determined using k-means clustering of the author-keywords while Porter's stemming algorithm was used to stemmed inflectional terms to their roots. Overall, 640 documents were published by 1903 authors with 2.07 authors/article and 0.336 article/author, 4.31 co-authors/article, an annual growth rate of 17.35% and a collaboration index of 2.99. Research productivity increased from 1 article in 1992 to 93 articles in 2021. The citations of the topmost 23 articles ranged from 365 to 109 and the total citation per year ranged from 45.6 to 27.3. China (n = 267, 41.7%), Japan (n = 53, 8.3%), USA (n = 33, 5.2%) and Korea (n = 28, 4.4%) were respectively the top four countries based on the total of published articles and overall citation. There were 48 relevant keywords dominated by Bisphenol A, adsorption, biodegradation, and peroximonosulphate. The present analysis identifies research accomplishment, focus and gaps on Bisphenol A remediation and offer the researchers the information needed to forecast future research priorities that can help policymakers and governments to internationalize collaborations and create research curricula that can remediate BPA on a global scale. Early childhood is important for neurodevelopment, and exposure to endocrine disruptors such as bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates in this period may cause neurodevelopmental disorders and delays. The present study examined the association between exposure to mixtures of BPA and three metabolites of phthalates in early childhood and IQ at 5 years of age. The Mother and Children's Environmental Health (MOCEH) study is a prospective birth cohort study conducted in Korea with 1751 pregnant women enrolled from 2006 to 2010. After excluding those without relevant data, 47 children were included in the final analysis. We measured children's urinary concentrations of metabolites of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (Bisphenol A, mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate, mono-(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate and mono-(2-ethyl-5-butyl) phthalate) at ages of 24 and 36 months. We evaluated the children's IQ with the Korean Wechsler Intelligence Test at the age of 5 years. After adjusting for potential confounders, a multiple linear regression was conducted to examine the associations between individual endocrine-disrupting chemicals and the IQ of the children. Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) regression and quantile-based g-computation were used to assess the association between IQ at age 5 and exposure to mixtures of BPA and phthalates. In the single-chemical analyses, mono-(2-ethyl-5-butyl) phthalate exposure at 36 months was adversely associated with children's IQ (β = −4.93, 95% confidence interval (CI): -9.22, −0.64). In the WQS regression and quantile-based g-computation analyses, exposure to the mixture of BPA and phthalates was associated with lower IQ [β = −9.13 (P-value = 0.05) and β = −9.18 (P-value = 0.05), respectively]. The largest contributor to the overall association was exposure to mono-(2-ethyl-5-butyl) phthalate at 36 months. Bisphenol A (BPA), which is known to be an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC), is associated not only with estrogen activity and reproductive toxicity but also with a variety of metabolic disorders. BPA affects glucose tolerance, cholesterol biosynthesis, and fatty acid synthesis. Ginseng is a traditional medicinal plant that has been widely used in East Asia for more than 2000 years, and a number of health effects have been reported. Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) has also been shown to have effects on lipid metabolism and body weight reduction in vivo in obese mice. In this study, we administered BPA and KRG to ovariectomized (OVX) ICR mice. BPA (800 mg/kg/day) and KRG (1.2 g/kg/day) were orally administered to OVX mice for 3 days. KRG inhibited the increase in total fatty acid level by BPA as determined by lipid profiling in the liver of OVX mice. In addition, transcriptome analysis showed that KRG inhibited BPA-induced changes in lipid metabolic process-related genes. Backdground: Phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) have been used in a variety of consumer products and are detected widely in both humans and the environment. Demographic and socio-economic characteristics that affect exposure to these chemicals have been investigated among several general populations; however, nationally-representative population-based studies are limited to Canada, Germany, and the USA. Moreover, relatively little is known about the socio-demographic characteristics that influence exposure to these chemicals among nationally representative populations of Asia.Methods: Data are obtained from the Korean National Environmental Health Survey (2012-2014). In total, 6,478 adults (aged 19 and older) were recruited and sampled for urinary levels of major phthalate metabolites and bisphenol A. In addition, demographic and socio-economic parameters were determined from questionnaire data and the characteristics associated with urinary concentrations of the target chemicals were assessed.Results: Urinary levels of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) metabolites of Korean adults were generally higher, but those of mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP) were lower, and BPA were similar or higher than those reported from national biomonitoring programs in the United States and Canada. Similar to other nationally representative populations, females and older adults showed higher creatinine-adjusted phthalate metabolite and BPA levels among the Korean population. Meanwhile, monthly household income and education were negatively associated with urinary phthalate metabolites. Among personal care products, nail polish use was positively associated with both phthalate metabolites and BPA concentrations in urine.Conclusion: Our observations based on a nationally representative population of Korea show that socio-demographic determinants for these urinary chemicals vary by country, and should be considered for developing appropriate mitigation measures and policies. Background: Prenatal and postnatal exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) may affect early brain development. Rodent studies suggest that prenatal and postnatal neurodevelopmental toxicity from BPA exposure may manifest as social deficits in offspring. We investigated the association between prenatal and postnatal exposure to BPA and social impairments in a sample of 4-year-old children.Methods: We recruited second-trimester pregnant women between 2008 and 2011, and measured their creatinine-adjusted prenatal urine BPA levels. In 2014-2015, a subset of 4-year-old children born to these women underwent neurobehavioral assessment and physical examination. We collected urine and blood from the children and assessed social impairments, including deficits in social interaction, social communication, and other behavior patterns using the Korean version of the Social Communication Questionnaire (K-SCQ) (n = 304). We examined social impairments associated with prenatal exposure at mid-term pregnancy and postnatal exposure to BPA at 4 years of age, using linear and piecewise linear regression models.Results: The relationship between prenatal BPA exposure and social communication was non-linear and statistically significant at or above the flexion point for BPA levels of 3.0 μg/g creatinine in girls (58.4%, 95% confidence interval [CI], 6.5% to 135.8%). Each 2-fold increase in postnatal BPA exposure was significantly associated with an 11.8% (95% CI, 0.6% to 24.3%) increase in impairment in social communication in 4-year old girls, as indicated by the linear regression model.Conclusion: Prenatal and postnatal BPA exposure is associated with social impairment at 4 years of age, particularly in girls. Background: Despite increasing evidence on the relationship between exposure to phthalates and bisphenol A with allergies and asthma, reports on atopic dermatitis (AD) with these chemicals are few. We assessed the association between AD symptoms and the exposure to phthalates and bisphenol A and in children.Methods: We surveyed 18 boys with AD (age 3-7 years) in a day care center in Seoul between May 2009 and April 2010. AD symptoms were recorded by using a daily symptom diary. We collected 460 series of pooled urine twice a day, in the morning and afternoon, over 230 working days and measured the concentrations of mono-2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl phthalate (5-oxo-MEHP), mono-2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl phthalate (5-OH-MEHP), mono-isobutyl phthalate (MnBP) and bisphenol A glucuronide (BPAG) in the pooled urine. Logistic regression was used for statistical analysis.Results: Most phthalate metabolite levels were higher in the morning than in the afternoon (p < 0.0001). There was seasonal variation in the levels of phthalates and bisphenol A metabolites. Levels of 5-OH-MEHP, MnBP, and BPAG were highest in summer (p < 0.0001). Manifestation of AD symptoms was associated with an increase in urinary levels of MnBP (adjusted odds ratio, aOR = 2.85, 95% CI: 1.12-7.26 per 1 μg/L of MnBP) and BPAG (aOR = 1.79, 95% CI: 0.91-3.52 per 1 μg/L BPAG) on the same day. The levels of MnBP and BPAG in the previous day increased AD symptoms (aOR = 2.74, 95% CI: 1.21-6.20, for 1 μg/L of MnBP and aOR = 2.01, 95% CI: 1.08-3.74 for 1 μg/L BPAG).Conclusion: Our results suggest that exposure to phthalates and bisphenol A is associated with aggravation of AD symptoms in children. Background: To verify oxidative stress as a possible mechanism that establishes a relationship between exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) and adverse health outcomes in the elderly Korean population, we evaluated the relation between visit-to-visit variations in urinary BPA and oxidative stress biomarker.Methods: To assess the relation between BPA and urinary malondialdehyde (MDA) as an oxidative stress biomarker, we used a mixed effect model after controlling for age, sex, BMI, drinking status, exercise, urinary cotinine level, PM10 on lag day 2, and mean temperature and dew point on the day. The relation between exposure to BPA and MDA level by sex of participants and polymorphisms of oxidative stress-related genes (COX2, EPHX1, HSP70-hom, PON1, eNOS, CAT, DRD2, SOD2, and MPO) was also evaluated.Results: A significant association was found for BPA with MDA in both male and female elderly participants (male, β = 0.19 and p = 0.0003; female, β = 0.18 and p < .0001; and total, β = 0.18 and p < .0001). Furthermore, the association of BPA with MDA was found regardless of any genotype of the nine oxidative stress-related genes.Conclusions: The results of our study suggest a strong association of BPA with oxidative stress, not related with sex and oxidative stress-related gene polymorphisms. Background: The cancer death rate escalated during 20th century. In South Korea, lung cancer is expected to contribute 12,736 deaths in men, the highest amount among all cancers. Several risk factors may increase the chance to acquiring lung cancer, with mostly related to exogenous compounds found in cigarette smoke and synthetic manufacturing materials. As the mortality rate of lung cancer increases, deeper understanding is necessary to explore risk factors that may lead to this malignancy. In this regard, this study aims to apply high resolution metabolomics (HRM) using LC-MS to detect significant compounds that might contribute in inducing lung cancer and find the correlation of these compounds to the subjects' smoking habit.Methods: The comparison was made between healthy control and lung cancer groups for metabolic differences. Further analyses to determine if these differences are related to tobacco-induced lung cancer (past-smoker control vs. past-smoker lung cancer patients (LCPs) and non-smoker control vs. current-smoker LCPs) were selected. The univariate analysis was performed, including a false discovery rate (FDR) of q = 0.05, to determine the significant metabolites between the analyses. Hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) was done to discriminate metabolites between the control and case subjects. Selected compounds based on significant m/z features of human serum then experienced MS/MS examination, showing that for many m/z, the patterns of ion dissociation matched with standards. Then, the significant metabolites were identified using Metlin database and features were mapped on the human metabolic pathway mapping tool of the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG).Results: Using metabolomics-wide association studies, metabolic changes were observed among control group and lung cancer patients. Bisphenol A (211.11, [M + H-H2O](+)), retinol (287.23, [M + H](+)) and L-proline (116.07, [M + H](+)) were among the significant compounds found to have contributed in the discrimination between these groups, suggesting that these compounds might be related in the development of lung cancer. Retinol has been seen to have a correlation with smoking while both bisphenol A and L-proline were found to be unrelated.Conclusions: Two potential biomarkers, retinol and L-proline, were identified and these findings may create opportunities for the development of new lung cancer diagnostic tools. Background: Chemical exposure may cause serious adverse health effects. Under the Environmental Health Act in Korea, the first national survey, Korean National Environmental Health Survey (KoNHES), was conducted, and dozens of major environmental chemicals were measured among Korean adults between 2009 and 2011.Objectives: To understand the levels of exposure to environmental chemicals among general Korean adults population, and to identify factors that may influence the levels of exposure.Methods: The blood and urine samples were collected from Korean adults with 19 years of age and older (n=6311), and were analyzed for a number of environmental chemicals including metals, bisphenol A (BPA), and metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalates, a pyrethroid insecticide (3-PBA) and several volatile organic carbons (VOCs). Demographic and other behavioral factors were asked through questionnaire.Results: Among general Korean adults, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and metabolite of DBP (MnBP) were higher than those reported in other nationwide surveys of Canada, Germany, and USA. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a representative endocrine disrupting compound used in a vast array of consumer products, and are being frequently substituted by its analogues, bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF). We aimed to examine the association between urinary bisphenol levels with obesity and lipid profiles in the general population to comprehensively evaluate its potential of metabolic disturbance. A representative sample of 1046 US adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013–2016) and 3268 Korean adults from the Korean National Environmental Health Survey (2015–2017) was analyzed. We examined the exposure levels of bisphenols and determined their associations with obesity, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglyceride (TG) levels, and hypercholesterolemia prevalence through multiple linear, and binary/ordinal logistic regression models. In both populations, high BPA levels (lowest tertile vs. 2nd, 3rd tertiles) showed corresponding associations with lipid profile and obesity. BPA levels were associated with decreased HDL-C levels (Q3: β = −0.053, p = 0.08 (US); Q2: β = −0.030, p-0.03), increased TG levels (Q3: β = 0.121, p = 0.029 (US); Q3: β = 0.089, p = 0.021, and higher odds for obesity (Q3: OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.06, 2.35 (US); Q3: OR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.11, 1.78). Higher BPS levels were positively associated with obesity status, especially in US men (Q2: OR = 1.84, 95% CI: 1.15, 2.96) and Korean women (Q3: OR = 1.27, 95% CI: 0.99, 1.64). A significant decrease in HDL-C (Q3: β = −0.088, p = 0.01) and elevated odds for obesity at higher BPF levels (Q3: OR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.00, 2.56) was observed in US women. The findings of our study indicate that BPA and its analogues, BPS and BPF, are associated with lipid metabolism disorders in addition to obesity in adults. Abstract: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic phenolic compound to which the general public may be exposed via consumer products and environmental contamination. We assessed the association between urinary BPA concentration and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes. This cross-sectional study included Korean adult participants (n =1210) aged 40–69 years and was based on the 2009 Korean National Human Biomonitoring Survey. Demographic characteristics and medical history of type 2 diabetes were collected from the participants by questionnaire, and BPA levels were determined by analysis of urine samples. The mean age of the participants was 53.4 years and 41.6% were men; the prevalence of type 2 diabetes differed according to demographic characteristics. The geometric mean urinary BPA levels of participants with and without type 2 diabetes were 2.03 and 2.40ng/mL, respectively. Among BPA quartiles, no clear association was found between BPA levels and type 2 diabetes. Although the adjusted odds ratio of type 2 diabetes was slightly increased for participants in the upper BPA quartile, the association was not statistically significant. These findings suggest that a high body BPA burden may not be associated with an increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Korean adults. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Bisphenol analogues are used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Despite the widespread use of bisphenols, few studies have reported the occurrence of compounds other than bisphenol A (BPA) in sediment. In this study, concentrations and profiles of eight bisphenol analogues were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) in sediments collected from several industrialized areas in the United States (U.S.), Japan, and Korea. The total concentrations of bisphenols (ΣBPs; sum of eight bisphenols) in sediment ranged from below the limit of quantitation (LOQ) to 25 300 ng/g dry weight (dw), with a mean value of 201 ng/g dw. Sediment samples from Lake Shihwa, Korea, contained the highest concentrations of both individual and total bisphenols. Among individual bisphenols, BPA and bisphenol F (BPF) were the predominant compounds, accounting for 64% and 30% of the total bisphenol concentrations in sediment. We also examined vertical profiles of concentrations of bisphenol analogues in sediment cores from the U.S. and Japan. Sediment cores from the U.S. showed a gradual decline in the concentrations of bisphenols as compared to the past decade. BPA concentrations were found to decline in a sediment core from Tokyo Bay, but bisphenol S (BPS) was more frequently detected in core sections that represent the most recent decade, which is consistent with the replacement of BPA with BPS in some applications since 2001 in Japan. To conduct proper biological monitoring of environmental exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), the variation in host susceptibility need to be investigated. For this purpose, we studied effects of genetic polymorphism in sulfotransferase (SULT) 1A1 on urinary BPA, a biomarker for BPA exposure, in 73 Koreans (male, 34; female, 39; age, 48.9 ± 11.9 yrs). We used reverse phase-HPLC/FD for analysis of urinary BPA and obtained information from each subject on lifestyle, environment, and potential exposure to BPA via food. The HPLC/FD method showed good reproducibility (CVs < 0.1) and a relatively sensitive detection limit of 0.012 μg/L. These methods yielded a geometric mean of urinary BPA as 9.54 μg/L (8.91 μg/g creatinine), with a geometric standard deviation of 8.32 μg/L. Among potential routes for BPA exposure, only “vinyl wrapping of microwave heating” indicated a borderline positive association with urinary BPA level (p = 0.1). After PCR-RFLP, we found the allele frequencies of SULT1A1*1 and SULT1A1*2 were 0.89 and 0.11, respectively within the subjects. As the SULT1A1*1 allele of SULT1A1 is known to be a rapid sulfonylation-allele, the presence of SULT1A1*1 is suspected to rapidly dispose of environmental BPA. However resultant, urinary BPA levels were not significantly different between the SULT1A1*1/*1 identified subjects and the SULT1A1*1/*2 subjects. Therefore, to clarify host variability in urinary BPA level, different genetic polymorphisms in BPA metabolic enzymes other than SULT1A1 should be further studied. Correspondence to: M. Phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA), widely applied in industrial and consumer products, can affect hormones associated with the human reproductive system. Because the incidence of reproductive diseases is increasing, a comprehensive exposure assessment of phthalates and bisphenol analogues (BPs) is required for childbearing-aged women. Phthalate metabolites and BPs were measured in urine samples collected from 509 childbearing-aged women (20–48 years) in Korea to investigate their current exposure status, profiles, influencing factors, and potential health risks. The toxicity of endocrine disruptors depends on the synergistic interactions of biological, environmental, and behavioral factors. The specific effects of diet, consumer product use, and behaviors, however, are debated in the literature, particularly with regard to endocrine disruptors found in breast milk. This study aimed to measure the levels of phthalate metabolites, bisphenol A, parabens, and triclosan in breast milk and to investigate their associations with various lifestyle factors. The breast milk samples as well as surveys were collected from 221 first-time mothers throughout South Korea and each sample was analyzed for the presence of 15 endocrine disruptors. Phthalate metabolites were detected in 5.4–83.3% of the samples, with median concentrations of 0.08–1.72 μg/L, while bisphenol A, parabens, and triclosan were detected in 25.8–88.2% of the samples, with median concentrations of 0.12–1.47 μg/L. High levels of endocrine disruptors were associated with frequent consumption of fish and cup noodles; the use of plastic and disposable food containers; the use of air fresheners, lotions and make-up; the purchase of new furniture; and socioeconomic status. We also observed the potential role of moderate walking activity on the reduction of these chemicals in breast milk. Our data provide evidence of the potential effects of diet, consumer products, and behavior on the presence of phthalate metabolites, bisphenol A, parabens, and triclosan in breast milk. Future studies should include community or regional impact on a mothers' exposure to endocrine disruptors, to assess the joint contribution of both individual and neighborhood factors. In this study, chronic toxicity of three endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) used to make plastic products (i.e., bisphenol A (BPA), bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) and nonylphenol (NP)) in a Korean resident fish (Cyprinus carpio), crustacean (Moina macrocopa) and green alga (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) species was tested. It was found that M. macrocopa was particularly sensitive to those EDCs, especially DEHP and NP. We exposed M. macrocopa to DEHP (0.0012–0.1 mg/L) and NP (0.00037–0.03 mg/L), and as a result, both chemicals significantly delayed the first day of reproduction. The no observed effect concentrations (NOECs) of DEHP and NP for this endpoint were determined to be 0.0012 and 0.00037 mg/L, respectively, which are far lower than NOECs for any other freshwater species. Existing water quality criteria of various governmental agencies do not consider the toxicity of those EDCs on M. macrocopa , and thus, use of the existing criteria for the risk assessment of the Korean freshwater environment may underestimate the ecological risk. This study recommends using the water quality criteria derived in this study (0.95 μg/L for DEHP and 0.16 μg/L for NP) based on the chronic toxicity data on Korean resident species including M. macrocopa for the aquatic ecological risk assessment in Korea rather than adopting the existing water quality criteria. Bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) are chemical substitutes for, and may have similar physiological effects to, bisphenol A (BPA). Bisphenols provoke endocrine disorders and are cytotoxic, oxidize hemoglobin, and induce morphological changes in human red blood cells (RBC). It is more sensitive to changes in the RBC number and hemoglobin (Hb) level during pregnancy. Therefore, we investigated the effects of bisphenols (BPs) and their substitute compounds on hemopoiesis and the serum biochemical parameters of pregnant women. The study population comprised 196 pregnant women from the MAKE cohort study, recruitment for which occurred from 2017 to 2019. We measured the levels of BPA, BPF and BPS in urine samples and collected data on socioeconomic, lifestyle, and environmental factors at visits to the hospital. The associations between the levels of the three BPs and biochemical parameters were analyzed by multiple linear regression. The geometric mean urinary concentrations of specific gravity adjusted BPA, BPF, and BPS were 2.1, 0.2, and 0.1 μg/L, respectively. There was a significant negative association between the urinary concentration of BPA and the Hb level (β = −0.5, p = 0.02). After stratifying by the median concentrations of the three BPs, the maternal urinary BPA level had a significantly negative effect on the RBC count, HB level, and hematocrit in the high BPA concentration group (RBC, β = - 0.5, p = 0.001; Hb, β = −1.4, p = 0.002; Hct, β = −5.0, p = 0.001). BPA has a harmful effect on hemato-biochemical changes that occur during pregnancy. Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the largest amounts of chemicals in daily life and source of polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resins, medical equipment, plastic consumer products. Recent studies reported that the effects of BPA on human health in the thyroid hormone. Therefore, this study aimed to indicate the association between urinary BPA concentration and thyroid function in total triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), thyroidal stimulating hormone (TSH) and stratified the population by body mass index (BMI). This study was performed on 6478 adults aged 19 years and older based on the Second Korean National Environmental Health Survey (KoNEHS, 2012–2014). We measured BPA in urine and total T3, T4 and TSH in serum from the 2nd KoNEHS study. The multiple regression analysis was performed to assess the association of urinary BPA concentrations with thyroid hormone after BMI stratification. Urinary BPA associated with thyroid hormone. Especially, BPA is related to T3 (−0.627) in all group, and T4 (−0.060, −0.098) in all group and the group of BMI 25.0kg/m2 or more negatively. When stratified by BPA, T3 and T4 were significantly decreased with the high BPA exposure compared with the low BPA exposure for BMI more than 25.0kg/m2 (adjusted β = −3.402, 95% CI: 4.942, −1.862, adjusted β = −0.209, 95% CI: 0.328, −0.090). However, no obvious associations were found between BPA concentration and TSH. The results of urinary BPA decrease with T3 and T4 levels increase in the higher BMI group is a new finding which does not exist in recent studies of Korea. • We examined the relations between exposure of BPA and thyroid function by BMI. • BPA was negatively associated with T3 and T4 levels in the higher BMI group. • However, no obvious associations were found between BPA and TSH.
