Coastal regions worldwide face increasing air pollution due to maritime activities. This technical note focuses on assessing the air pollution in the Daesan port area, Republic of Korea, using hourly emission measurements. Leveraging Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, we estimate vessel-induced air pollutant emissions and correlate them with real-time measurements. Vessel navigational statuses are categorized from the AIS data, enabling an estimation of fuel oil consumption. Random Forest models predict specific fuel oil consumption and maximum continuous ratings for vessels with unknown engine details. Using emission factors, we calculate the emissions (CO2, NO2, SO2, PM-10, and PM-2.5) from vessels visiting the port. These estimates are compared with actual air pollutant concentrations, revealing a qualitative relationship with an average correlation coefficient of approximately 0.33. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: An effective test mechanism to evaluate clinical knowledge and skills of the entry-level healthcare professionals is important for providing clinical competency and improving patient care. This study aimed to develop novel, innovative computer-based test (Inno-CBT) item types for application in the national examination of Korean healthcare professionals. Methods: This exploratory study was conducted from May 2021 to March 2022 by a team of faculty members from pharmacy schools in South Korea. A literature search using PubMed, Google Scholar, RISS, Web of Science, and KoreaMed was performed. Forum presentations, media articles, and previous reports by the Korea Health Personnel Licensing Examination Institute (KHPLEI) were included. Workshops were held, information and ideas were collected and conceptualized, and item types were designed, drafted, and refined. By repeating this process, the Inno-CBT item types were finalized. Results: Forty-one Inno-CBT item types with 28 subtypes were developed. New digital technologies, such as a reactive responsive media interface, an animation insertion, multimedia embedding, and network surfing, were utilized in these novel types. It was anticipated that these Inno-CBT item types would effectively measure abilities in healthcare knowledge, problem-solving skills, and professional behaviors. Some potential barriers to implementing the Inno-CBT item types include item difficulty, operational unfamiliarity, complexity in scoring protocols, and network security. Conclusions: A variety of styles of novel Inno-CBT item types were developed to evaluate the multifaceted and in-depth professional abilities required for healthcare professionals. Container terminals are at the center of global logistics, and are highly dependent on the schedule of vessels arriving. Conventional ETA records from ships, utilized for terminal berth planning, lack sufficient accuracy for effective plan implementation. Thus, there is a pressing need for improved ETA prediction methods. In this research, we propose a novel approach that leverages past voyage route patterns to predict the ETA of container vessels arriving at a container terminal at Busan New Port, South Korea. By modeling representative paths based on previous ports of call, the method employs real-time position and speed data from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) to predict vessel arrival times. By inputting AIS data into segmented representative routes, optimal parameters yielding minimal ETA errors for each vessel are determined. The algorithm's performance evaluation during the modeling period demonstrates its effectiveness, achieving an average Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of approximately 3 h and 14 min. These results surpass the accuracy of existing ETA data, such as ETA in the Terminal Operating System and ETA in the AIS of a vessel, indicating the algorithm's superiority in ETA estimation. Furthermore, the algorithm consistently outperforms the existing ETA benchmarks during the evaluation period, confirming its enhanced accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose To explore the need for pharmaceutical care services, key features of desirable pharmacy services, and perceived barriers for advancing the services in hospital environments with doctors and nurses who are key co-workers of the interdisciplinary team care services.Methods Semi-structured, in-depth interviews with eighteen doctors and fifteen nurses employing purposive and snowballing sampling strategies were conducted in ten hospitals in South Korea. Results The level of pharmaceutical care was varied across regions or institutions in South Korea. The concept of pharmaceutical care was insufficiently defined, and tended to be limited to some parts of medication counseling. Through pharmaceutical care services, doctors desired to acquire comprehensive drug information from and to share clinical responsibilities with pharmacists. Nurses wished to lower their burdens of medication counseling services from their daily practices. Doctors and nurses asked for pharmacists providing essential and carefully selected medication information to their patients in a patient-centered manner. The listed barriers to pharmaceutical care included the lack of appropriate systems for reward, insufficient accessibility to patient records by pharmacists, ambiguous role descriptions of pharmacist, and absence of effective communication among professionals. Conclusion A successful pharmaceutical care service model should allow efficient exchange of information among healthcare professionals to build inter-professional trust and to provide a continuity of care both in terms of time and setting. Abstract: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), commonly used flame retardants, have been reported as potential endocrine disruptor and neurodevelopmental toxicants, thus giving rise to the public health concern. The goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between umbilical cord blood, maternal blood, and breast milk concentrations of PBDEs in South Korean. We assessed PBDE levels in paired samples of umbilical cord blood, maternal blood, and breast milk. The levels of seven PBDE congeners were measured in 21 paired samples collected from the Cheil Woman’s Hospital (Seoul, Korea) in 2008. We also measured thyroid hormones levels in maternal and cord blood to assess the association between PBDEs exposure and thyroid hormone levels. However, there was no correlation between serum thyroxin (T4) and total PBDEs concentrations. The total PBDEs concentrations in the umbilical cord blood, maternal blood, and breast milk were 10.7±5.1ngg−1 lipid, 7.7±4.2ngg−1 lipid, and 3.0±1.8ngg−1 lipid, respectively. The ranges of total PBDE concentrations observed were 2.28–30.94ngg−1 lipid in umbilical cord blood, 1.8–17.66ngg−1 lipid in maternal blood, and 1.08–8.66ngg−1 lipid in breast milk. BDE-47 (45–73% of total PBDEs) was observed to be present dominantly in all samples, followed by BDE-153. A strong correlation was found for major BDE-congeners between breast milk and cord blood or maternal blood and cord blood samples. The measurement of PBDEs concentrations in maternal blood or breast milk may help to determine the concentration of PBDEs in infant. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
