In 2015, the United Nations' (UN's) Sustainable Development Summit adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to transform the world by 2030 through solving urgent social issues, including: poverty, hunger, health and well-being, gender equality, and climate action. We used the UN's SDGs as an analytical framework to review the literature on action learning for community development. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic literature review to examine the current state of the literature on action learning for community development and to provide implications for research and practice. To that end, we used Garrard's Matrix Method for systematic review and identified 85 articles on the topic published 2004-2023 in "Action Learning: Research and Practice." In an analysis of 85 articles from the lens of the UN's 17 SDGs, we identified three themes: research focus of the literature, analysis of the articles from the lens of the UN's SDGs, and comparison of global and Korean contexts in the literature. Based on the study findings, we discuss the significance of the study, implications for research and practice, and study limitations.

The flipped classroom has become a popular pedagogical approach in higher education with its capability to promote students' active engagement in higher-order tasks; nevertheless, studies have shown that the flipped classroom is not always successful. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors including student characteristics as well as learning and teaching factors that influence students' affective and motivational outcomes in flipped classrooms in higher education. A total of 350 university students in 12 different flipped classrooms completed survey instruments at the end of the semester that assessed their experience with flipped classrooms, emotional experiences, and motivation. Results indicated that enjoyment was predicted by the perception of preview materials, teacher facilitation, and participation in learning activities. Boredom was predicted by the perception of preview materials and participation in learning activities. Self-efficacy was significantly explained by both student characteristics and learning and teaching factors. Further discussion and implications are provided.

Background: There is limited research on the intra‐individual efficacy of ventricular pacing minimization algorithms developed by Biotronik—the Ventricular Pace Suppression algorithm (VpS) and the Intrinsic Rhythm Support plus algorithm (IRSplus) (BIOTRONIK SE & Co. KG, Berlin, Germany). We performed a randomized pilot trial that evaluated the efficacy of two algorithms in patients with symptomatic sinus node dysfunction (SND) who received a dual‐chamber pacemaker. Methods: The trial was conducted in 11 tertiary hospitals in South Korea. The patients were randomized to either the VpS or IRSplus algorithm group after a 3‐month period of fixed atrioventricular (AV) delay. The primary outcome was the ventricular pacing percentage (Vp%) at each follow‐up visit. The secondary outcomes were the occurrence of heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF) during the study period. Results: Data from 131 patients were analyzed. Initially, their average Vp% over 3 months with a fixed AV interval was 14.1 ± 19.4%. Patients were randomly assigned to VpS and IRSplus groups, with 66 and 65 in each. Algorithms reduced average Vp% to 4.0 ± 11.3% at 9 months and 6.7 ± 14.9% at 15 months. These algorithms were more effective for patients with paced AV delay (PAVD) ≤300 ms compared to those with PAVD >300 ms. Both algorithms were equally effective in reducing Vp%. Clinical AF or HF hospitalization was not observed during the study period. The purpose of this case study was to examine the success factors of a leadership development program using action learning for self-governance members in the city of Bucheon in Korea, as well as the distinctive features of action learning for community development in comparison with action learning for business. To that end, we conducted 22 semi-structured interviews with stakeholders (action learning participants, practitioners, and facilitators) and a survey with 39 participants from 2016 to 2018. Based on the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, we identified four themes: outcomes, advantages, success factors, and suggestions. We found that action learning for community development requires us to factor in the importance of understanding its unique contextual differences compared to action learning for business. We provide implications for research and practice as well as the study limitations.

Leucism, in which pigmentation is lost over part or the entire body of an animal, has a range of possible genetic causes. Here, we report leucism in an individual tiger keelback (Rhabdophis tigrinus) found on Jeung Island, Shinan‐gun, Jeollanam‐do, South Korea, during a survey of the distribution of reptiles in the area. The individual was observed sunbathing in the bushes next to a pond. This individual exhibited ecdysis, thus it considered that have normal feeding activity. Our report represents the first observation of leucism in R. tigrinus, and thus, further analysis is needed of this phenotype to more clearly understand its impact on the species and its natural history. Genetic, environment, and behaviour factors have a role in causing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). We aimed to determine the strength of the association between various risk factors and SCA incidence. We conducted a multicentre case-control study at 17 hospitals in Korea from September 2017 to December 2020. The cases included out-of-hospital cardiac arrest aged 19–79 years with presumed cardiac aetiology. Community-based controls were recruited at a 1:1 ratio after matching for age, sex, and urban residence level. Multivariable conditional logistic regression analysis was conducted. Among the 1016 cases and 1731 controls, 948 cases and 948 controls were analysed. A parental history of SCA, low educational level, own heart disease, current smoking, and non-regular exercise were associated with SCA incidence (Adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 2.51 [1.48–4.28] for parental history of SCA, 1.37 [1.38–2.25] for low edication level, 3.77 [2.38–5.90] for non-coronary artery heart disease, 4.47 [2.84–7.03] for coronary artery disease, 1.39 [1.08–1.79] for current smoking, and 4.06 [3.29–5.02] for non-regular exercise). Various risk factors related to genetics, environment, and behaviour were independently associated with the incidence of SCA. Novel swine orthopneumovirus (SOV) infections have been identified in pigs in the USA and some European countries but not in Asian countries, including South Korea, to date. The current study reports the first SOV infections in four domestic pig farms located in four provinces across South Korea. The detection rate of SOV in oral fluid samples using qRT-PCR was 4.4% (14/389), indicating the presence of the virus in pigs at commercial farms in Korea. Two complete genome sequences and one glycoprotein (G) gene sequence were obtained from SOV-positive samples. The complete genome analysis of KSOV-2201 and KSOV-2202 strains showed 98.2 and 95.4% homologies with a previously reported SOV, and the phylogenetic tree exhibited a high correlation with a previously reported SOV strain from the US and a canine pneumovirus (CPnV) strain from China. Based on the genetic analysis of the viral G gene, the murine pneumonia virus (MPV)-like orthopneumoviruses (MLOVs) were divided into two genogroups (G1 and G2). Seventeen CPnVs and two feline pneumoviruses were grouped into G1, while the Korean SOV strains identified in this study were grouped into G2 along with one SOV and two CPnVs. Porella gracillima Mitt. (Jungermanniidae, Porellaceae), a bryophyte is widespread in temperate Asia and North America. In Korea, P. gracillima is mainly observed in shaded and dried rocks or tree trunks on mountains. Here, we determined the complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of P. gracillima to provide useful genetic information in the phylogenetic relationship, phylogeographic history, and conservation of the species. The complete cp genome of P. gracillima was assembled using NGS Illumina HiSeqX platform. The cp genome was 121,867 bp in length (GC contents, 33.7%) and showed a typical quadripartite structure, consisting of a large single copy (LSC) of 83,406 bp, a small single copy (SSC) of 19,692 bp, and two inverted repeats (IRs) of 9,385 bp. Phylogenetic analysis shows that Porellaceae was a sister group of Radulaceae, which agrees with the findings of the previous phylogenetic studies. Our cp genome data of P. gracillima may contribute to a better understanding of the evolution of the Porella in Porellaceae and will help to infer its molecular identification, thereby providing a guideline for conservation. Sternotherus carinatus has been considered as a potential invasive species in Korea. However, the mitochondrial genome information of S. carinatus which can be used to control its effect on ecosystem is lacking. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of S. carinatus in Korea was sequenced and characterized. The mitochondrial genome consists of 37 genes (13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and 2 ribosomal RNA genes) and a noncoding region. Phylogenetic analysis based on the mitochondrial genome sequences showed that S. carinatus from Korea is separated from other turtles which are the invasive species in Korea. Sequence divergence calculations indicated near-zero divergence between S. carinatus populations in Korea, the USA, and China, suggesting limited genetic differentiation. In the context of the broader issue of invasive species disrupting ecosystems, this research contributes to the identification of mitochondrial genomes for various freshwater turtle species, emphasizing the need for extended data collection to discern genetic mixing trends between native and non-native species. The complete mitochondrial genome of Chrysemys picta bellii in Korea was sequenced and characterized. The mitochondrial genome consists of 37 genes (13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and 2 ribosomal RNA genes) and a noncoding region. Phylogenetic analysis based on the mitochondrial genome sequences revealed that C. p. bellii from Korea formed a cluster with C. p. bellii from China and C. picta from the USA, while showing clear separation from other turtle species within the C. picta cluster. This study presented the first complete mitochondrial genome from C. p. bellii in Korea, offering crucial information for managing invasive species and protecting the local ecosystem. Background: Ticks are ectoparasites capable of directly damaging their hosts and transmitting vector-borne diseases. The ixodid tick Haemaphysalis flava has a broad distribution that extends from East to South Asia. This tick is a reservoir of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) that causes severe hemorrhagic disease, with cases reported from China, Japan and South Korea. Recently, the distribution of H. flava in South Korea was found to overlap with the occurrence of SFTSV. Methods: This study was undertaken to discover the molecular resources of H. flava female ticks using the Illumina HiSeq 4000 system, the Trinity de novo sequence assembler and annotation against public databases. The locally curated Protostome database (PANM-DB) was used to screen the putative adaptation-related transcripts classified to gene families, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme, aquaporin, adenylate cyclase, AMP-activated protein kinase, glutamate receptors, heat shock proteins, molecular chaperones, insulin receptor, mitogen-activated protein kinase and solute carrier family proteins. Also, the repeats and simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were screened from the unigenes using RepeatMasker (v4.0.6) and MISA (v1.0) software tools, followed by the designing of SSRs flanking primers using BatchPrimer 3 (v1.0) software. Results: The transcriptome produced a total of 69,822 unigenes, of which 46,175 annotated to the homologous proteins in the PANM-DB. The unigenes were also mapped to the EuKaryotic Orthologous Groups (KOG), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology (GO) specializations. Promiscuous presence of protein kinase, zinc finger (C2H2-type), reverse transcriptase, and RNA recognition motif domains was observed in the unigenes. A total of 3480 SSRs were screened, of which 1907 and 1274 were found as tri- and dinucleotide repeats, respectively. A list of primer sequences flanking the SSR motifs was detailed for validation of polymorphism in H. flava and the related tick species. Conclusions: The reference transcriptome information on H. flava female ticks will be useful for an enriched understanding of tick biology, its competency to act as a vector and the study of species diversity related to disease transmission. Simple Summary: A fatal feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) infection occurred in endangered Siberian tigers living in a zoo in the Republic of Korea. Genetic and phylogenetic analyses revealed that the infection was caused by the cross-species transmission of cat-derived FPV prevalent in Korea. The vaccinated tigers were infected with FPV most likely due to insufficient protective immunity or vaccine failure triggered by maternal-derived antibody interference. Therefore, improved biosecurity and vaccination guidelines are required to save the lives of endangered wild carnivores from fatal FPV infection. The data presented in this study will help us expand our knowledge of the molecular epidemiology of FPV in Korea and establish an effective control plan to prevent future FPV infections in captive wild carnivores. Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), a member of the species Protoparvovirus carnivoran1, is one of the most fatal pathogens of domestic and wild carnivores. The virus endemically infects domestic carnivores worldwide and its cross-species transmission threatens endangered wild carnivores, including Siberian tigers. In this study, a fatal FPV infection in endangered Siberian tigers was investigated to trace the origin of the virus and elucidate the reason behind FPV's infection of the vaccinated tigers. Our genetic characterization and phylogenetic analysis revealed that the virus detected in the infected tigers, designated as the KTPV-2305 strain, was closely related to FPV strains circulating in Korean cats, suggesting that it might have been transmitted from stray cats wandering around the zoo. Compared with the prototype FPV reference strains, the KTPV-2305 strain carried three distinct amino acid (aa) mutations in the VP2 protein sequence (I101T, I232V, and L562V) in this study. These three mutations are commonly found in most global FPV strains, including Korean strains, indicating that these mutations are common evolutionary characteristics of currently circulating global FPVs. The reason why the vaccinated tigers were infected with FPV was most likely the insufficient protective immunity of the affected tigress or vaccine failure triggered by the interference of maternal-derived antibodies in the affected tiger cubs. Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is an emerging coronavirus that causes diarrhea in nursing piglets. Since its first outbreak in the United States in 2014, this novel porcine coronavirus has been detected worldwide, including in Korea. However, no PDCoV case has been reported since the last report in 2016 in Korea. In June 2022, the Korean PDCoV strain KPDCoV-2201 was detected on a farm where sows and piglets had black tarry and watery diarrhea, respectively. We isolated the KPDCoV-2201 strain from the intestinal samples of piglets and sequenced the viral genome. Genetically, the full-length genome and spike gene of KPDCoV-2201 shared 96.9–99.2% and 95.8–98.8% nucleotide identity with other global PDCoV strains, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that KPDCoV-2201 belongs to G1b. Notably, the molecular evolutionary analysis indicated that KPDCoV-2201 evolved from a clade different from that of previously reported Korean PDCoV strains and is closely related to the emergent Peruvian and Taiwanese PDCoV strains. Furthermore, KPDCoV-2201 had one unique and two Taiwanese strain-like amino acid substitutions in the receptor-binding domain of the S1 region. In 2020, the Y280-lineage H9N2 low-pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAIV) was introduced into South Korea for the first time. Current vaccines are focused on the control of Y439-like viruses; however, there are continuous reports of decrease in egg production and secondary infections caused by Y280-lineage H9N2 LPAI infection in chickens. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop effective novel vaccines against Y280-lineage H9N2 LPAI. Most commercialized avian influenza vaccines are oil-adjuvanted inactivated vaccines, which are labour-intensive to administer and require higher dosage. In this study, rK148/Y280-HA, a novel recombinant Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vectored vaccine against Y280-lineage H9N2 LPAI, was developed and evaluated using two mass-applicable administration methods, spray vaccination and drinking water vaccination. Regardless of low serum antibody haemagglutination inhibition titres against NDV and Y280-lineage H9N2 LPAI after applying the rK148/Y280-HA vaccine, vaccination with either administration method protected chickens against virulent NDV and Y280-lineage H9N2 LPAIV after the challenge. Taken together, these results indicate that the rK148/Y280 vaccine can be administered using facile mass-application methods to provide protection against the Y280-lineage LPAI. Alien invasive species are posing conservation challenges worldwide. Pet trade, one of the many ways, is worsening the situation. Especially, pet turtles have been released into nature due to their longer life span and peoples' religious and traditional beliefs. In addition, unwanted and undesired pets are also released. While information on the successful local establishment and subsequent dispersal into new habitats is required to designate an invasive and ecosystem-disturbing species, alien freshwater turtle nests have always been hard to find and identify in nature. Because one should identify nests by the eggs, which do not always guide properly, as adults abandon the sites quickly. We thought the recent advancement in DNA technology may help improve the situation. We studied Pseudemys peninsularis, one of the most traded freshwater turtle pet species, which has already been reported from a wide range of wild areas in South Korea. Yet, it is not designated as ecosystem-disturbing species due to a lack of adequate information on their local reproduction and establishment. We conducted surveys and found two nests in Jeonpyeongje Neighborhood Park, Maewol-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju. We developed the methodology for extracting DNA from the eggshells and successfully identified the nests by phylogenetic analysis and verified through egg characteristics and morphological features of artificially hatched juveniles. This was the first successful initiative to extract DNA from freshwater turtle eggshells. We believe it will help future researchers identify the alien invasive turtle nests and develop their control and management policies. In addition, our study also included comparative descriptions and schematic diagrams of the eggs of eight freshwater turtles, including a native and three ecosystem-disturbing species, from South Korea. We urged an immediate designation of P. peninsularis as an ecosystem-disturbing species considering its local establishment, distribution range, and potential negative impact on native ecosystems. In South Korea, testing disinfectants against foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) that are contagious in livestock or that require special attention with respect to public hygiene can be manipulated only in high-level containment laboratories, which are not easily available. This causes difficulties in the approval procedure for disinfectants, such as a prolonged testing period. Additionally, the required biosafety level (BSL) in the case of FMDV has hindered its extensive studies. However, this drawback can be circumvented by using a surrogate virus to improve the performance of the efficacy testing procedure for disinfectants. Therefore, we studied bacteriophage MS2 (MS2) and bovine enterovirus type 1 (ECBO) with respect to disinfectant susceptibility for selecting a surrogate for FMDV according to the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) guidelines for efficacy testing of veterinary disinfectants. Effective concentrations of the active substances in disinfectants (potassium peroxymonosulfate, sodium dichloroisocyanurate, malic acid, citric acid, glutaraldehyde, and benzalkonium chloride) against FMDV, MS2, and ECBO were compared and, efficacies of eight APQA-listed commercial disinfectants used against FMDV were examined. The infectivity of FMDV and ECBO were confirmed by examination of cytopathic effects, and MS2 by plaque assay. The results reveal that the disinfectants are effective against MS2 and ECBO at higher concentrations than in FMDV, confirming their applicability as potential surrogates for FMDV in efficacy testing of veterinary disinfectants. Simple Summary: Torque teno viruses are small, ubiquitous viruses with highly diverse genomes and a wide host range. However, their incidence in dogs remains unknown in Republic of Korea. In this study, we detected Torque teno canis virus and performed whole-genome sequencing using canine fecal samples. This is the first study to determine the incidence of Torque teno canis virus in Republic of Korea and report a new recombinant virus. Torque teno canis virus (TTCaV) is an approximately 2.8 kb circular single-stranded DNA virus known to cause infections in dogs. However, its incidence in Republic of Korea remains unknown. In this study, 135 dog fecal samples were collected to determine TTCaV infection status in Republic of Korea. Based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis, 13 of 135 (9.6%) dogs tested positive for TTCaV. Three full-length genome sequences (GenBank IDs: MZ503910, MZ503911, and MZ503912) were obtained from the positive specimens. Phylogenetic tree construction and sequence identity, similarity plot, and recombination analyses were performed using these three full-length genomic sequences. Among the three full-length genomes, MZ503912 was determined to be a recombinant virus based on analysis with the reference TTCaV strains. This novel virus strain might have been generated by recombination between TTCaV strain KX827768 discovered in China and MZ503910 discovered in Republic of Korea. This is the first report to determine the incidence, genetic variation, and recombination of TTCaV in dogs in Republic of Korea. Further studies are needed to elucidate TTCaV pathogenesis in dogs. Equine parvovirus‐hepatitis (EqPV‐H) is one of the etiological agents of Theiler's disease, causing fulminant hepatitis; however, its transmission route and pathogenesis remain unclear. In the present study, we aimed to determine EqPV‐H shedding in oral/nasal/vaginal swabs or semen samples from horses living in Korea using nested polymerase chain reaction. We then used the data obtained to investigate various risk factors associated with EqPV‐H including viral shedding, hepatopathological changes, and genetic diversity. Our data revealed occurrence of EqPV‐H shedding in these animals (oral: 3/102 [2.9%]; nasal: 3/102 [2.9%]; semen: 1/9 [11.1%]) and identified that both age and country of foaling were significantly associated with EqPV‐H shedding (p <.05). In addition, we noted that one of the newly isolated strains clustered separately from the other strains in the phylogenetic tree, revealing unique nucleotide and amino acid substitutions. This is a field surveillance study providing evidence of natural and venereal shedding of EqPV‐H and describing its presence in both oral/nasal fluids and semen. This epidemiological and clinical analysis may help specify the clinicopathological features of EqPV‐H and facilitate the development of novel disease prevention strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aceclofenac controlled-release (CR) is a once-a-day tablet with 200 mg of aceclofenac, and is bioequivalent to conventional aceclofenac. However, its safety in humans has not been well studied in Korea. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the overall incidence and patterns of adverse events (AEs), the effectiveness of aceclofenac CR, and the differences in incidence rates of the AEs based on each patient's baseline charateristics. This study was conducted on patients receiving aceclofenac CR in clinical practice at each investigational institution to treat musculoskeletal pain and inflammation. The subjects were administered one tablet of aceclofenac CR (200 mg once-a-day) and were observed for 4 weeks post-administration. Factors affecting the occurrence of AEs were evaluated, and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used to measure the pain intensity. Among 14,543 subjects, the incidence rate of AEs was 0.86%, and that of adverse drug reactions was 0.74%. No serious AEs and unexpected adverse drug reactions were monitored. The incidence rates of AEs were significantly higher in females, inpatient treatment, individuals with concurrent disorders, and those receiving concomitant medications, respectively (all P < 0.05). Four weeks post-using aceclofenac CR, the mean changes in VAS was significantly decreased compared to prior administration. The overall clinical efficacy rate was 91.63%. This study confirmed that no severe adverse reactions were observed for aceclofenac CR exceeding those previously reported for safety results of conventional formulation of this drug in routine clinical practice settings. Aims: We aim to determine the temporal trends of incidence, prevalence, and death of aortic stenosis (AS, I35.0) in an East Asian population. Methods and results: Data for 3773 patients who were newly diagnosed with AS from 2006 through 2017 were extracted from the National Health Insurance Service in Korea. The age‐standardized incidence rate, prevalence rate, and death rate, survival rate (SR), and death risk of AS were calculated. Overall, the mean (standard deviation) age of AS patients was 69.9 (15.3) years [66.2 (15.7) years for men and 72.7 (14.4) years for women (P = 0.007)], and the proportion of men was 42.7%. The proportion of AS patients ≥60 years old was 80% (71.8% in men and 86% in women, P < 0.001). The proportion of patients who died of AS was 36.4% during the period from 2006 through 2017. The most common causes of death were disease of the circulatory system. The age‐standardized incidence, prevalence, and death rates in 2017 were 0.85, 2.79, and 0.58 persons per 100 000 persons, respectively. The 10 year SR was 49.2%. The higher adjusted HRs [95% CI] for AS were observed in 70‐ to 79‐year‐old people (9.08 [1.27, 64.7], P = 0.027), in individuals 80 years of age or older (22.7 [3.18, 161.9], P = 0.001), in men (1.46 [1.31, 1.63], P < 0.001), among the middle socioeconomic group (1.19 [1.03, 1.37], P = 0.016), among the lower income levels (1.32 [1.17, 1.49], P < 0.001), in those with myocardial infarction (1.57 [1.16, 2.13], P = 0.003), with heart failure (1.63 [1.44, 1.85], P < 0.001), with ischaemic stroke (3.26 [1.20, 8.85], P = 0.015), with haemorrhagic stroke (2.51 [1.94, 3.25], P = 0.02), with chronic kidney disease (2.51 [1.94, 3.25], P < 0.001), and with malignant neoplasm (2.33 [1.64, 3.31], P < 0.001). Conclusions: The proportion of AS at age ≥60 years was 80%. For AS, the age‐standardized incidence rates were steady, prevalence rates increased, and death rates decreased by year over a decade. The 10 year SR of AS was about 50%. The most common cause of death in AS was disease of the circulatory system. Given the progressively higher incidence of AS with age continued efforts are required to increase awareness regarding AS‐related symptoms and potential complications in aged people. The invasive species are of global concern, and the Invasive American Bullfrog (IAB; Lithobates catesbeianus) is one of the worst invasive amphibian species worldwide. Like other countries, South Korea is also facing challenges from IAB. Although many studies indicated impacts of IAB on native anurans in Korea, the actual risk at the specific level is yet to evaluate. Considering the putative invasiveness of IAB, it is hypothesized that any species with the possibility of physical contact or habitat sharing with them, will have a potential risk. Thus, we estimated and observed their home range, preferred habitats, morphology, behavior, and ecology. Then, comparing with existing knowledge, we assessed risks to the native anurans. We found a home range of 3474.2 ± 5872.5 m2 and identified three types of habitats for IAB. The analyses showed at least 84% of native anurans (frogs and toads) were at moderate to extreme risks, which included all frogs but only 33% of toads. Finally, we recommended immediate actions to conserve the native anurans based on our results. As this study is the first initiative to assess the specific risk level from the invasiveness of L. catesbeianus, it will help the managers to set conservation priorities and strategies. Simple Summary: Age determination is very important for observing life history traits, evaluating vulnerable life stages, and setting proper management and conservation strategies. Age determination in animals has always been tricky. Among other approaches, skeletochronology, an age determination method that involves counting the lines of arrested growth (LAGs) produced during inactive periods, similar to plant year rings, is well-practiced in many animal groups. However, the applicability of this method remains questioned for many species, including amphibians, because of concerns around the scarcity of information on confirmed numbers of annual LAGs (e.g., once or twice in a year), chances of the disappearance of LAGs over time, and which lines exactly to count. Herein, we tested its applicability to Kaloula borealis, a class II endangered amphibian in South Korea, by rearing juveniles in the laboratory for more than one year and comparing the results with the wild population at Lake Sihwa. This study confirmed the formation of one LAG each year and no disappearance of LAGs over time in this species. Furthermore, we were also able to determine the age structure of this wild population accurately. Hence, our study validates using skeletochronology in this species and recommends it for others that show similar growth patterns. Despite having some limitations, the use of skeletochronology—age determination by counting lines of arrested growth (LAGs)—in amphibians is increasing. The main limitation of using skeletochronology is identifying the innermost visible line (IVL) and counting the exact number of LAGs. The average age of males and females in this population was 2.75 ± 1.05 and 3.64 ± 3 years, respectively. We estimated sexual maturity at 2 years with rapid growth up to that stage in both sexes. We found a female-dominated sexual size dimorphism. This study offers accurate information on the life history traits and age structure of K. borealis that may help to evaluate population dynamics in other areas, identify vulnerable life stages and sites, assess the causes of population decline, and set conservation priorities. Vaccination is a practical method to provide protection against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), but current PRRSV vaccines show limited efficacy against divergent field strains. Lineage 1 PRRSV includes virulent strains such as NADC30 and MN184 and now has become one of the most prevalent viruses in Korea. Accordingly, there is an urgent need to develop a new vaccine for Korean lineage-1 strains. In this study, a vaccine candidate against Korean lineage-1 PRRSV, vCSL1-GP5-N33D, was developed by reverse genetics technology. vCSL1-GP5-N33D was designed as a hypo-glycosylated chimeric virus containing the glycoprotein 5 ectodomain region of the Korean lineage-1 wild-type strain. An inactivated vaccine of vCSL1-GP5-N33D was applied to a PRRS-endemic farm and elicited high serum virus neutralization (SVN) antibody titers. The vaccinated group induced SVN antibody titers of 4.40 (log2) ± 2.46, which were approximately 2-fold higher than those of the negative control at 8-weeks post-vaccination. Moreover, 60% of pigs in the vaccinated group displayed SVN antibody titers of ≥5 (log2), while none of the pigs in the negative control exhibited SVN antibody titers of ≥5 (log2). This study aimed to evaluate the risks of diabetes mellitus (DM) on out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and to investigate whether the risks of DM on OHCA varied according to the diagnostic and therapeutic characteristics of diabetes. We conducted a multicenter prospective case–control study in 17 University hospitals in Korea from September 2017 to December 2020. Cases were EMS-treated OHCA patients aged 20 to 79 with a presumed cardiac etiology. Community-based controls were recruited at a 1:2 ratio after matching for age, sex, and urbanization level of residence. A structured questionnaire and laboratory findings were collected from cases and controls. Multivariable conditional logistic regression analyses were conducted to estimate the risk of DM on OHCA by characteristics. A total of 772 OHCA cases and 1544 community-based controls were analyzed. A total of 242 (31.3%) OHCAs and 292 (18.9%) controls were previously diagnosed with DM. The proportions of type I DM (10.7% vs. 2.1%) and insulin therapy (15.3% vs. 6.5%) were higher in OHCAs with DM than in controls with DM. The duration of DM was longer in OHCAs than in controls (median 12 vs. 7 years). DM was associated with an increased risk of OHCA (aOR (95% CI), 2.13 (1.64–2.75)). Compared to the no diabetes group, the risks of OHCA increased in the diabetes patients with type I DM (5.26 (1.72–16.08)) and type II DM group (1.63 (1.18–2.27)), a long duration of DM prevalence (1.04 (1.02–1.06) per 1-year prevalence duration), and a high HbA1c level (1.38 (1.19–1.60) per 1% increase). By treatment modality, the aOR (95% CI) was lowest in the oral hypoglycemic agent (1.47 (1.08–2.01)) and highest in the insulin (6.63 (3.04–14.44)) groups. The complete mitochondrial genome of Pseudemys concinna in Korea was sequenced and characterized. The mitochondrial genome is constituted of 37 genes (13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes) and a noncoding region. Phylogenetic analysis based on the complete mitochondrial genome showed that P. concinna has closer relationship with Chrysemys picta than Trachemys scripta elegans. This is the first case for complete mitochondrial genome from P. concinna in Korea, which will provide information for biogeographical studies and management plan for invasive species. Background: It is unclear whether depression is linked to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The purpose of this study was to examine the association between depression and NAFLD and whether the association is partly explained by insulin resistance or inflammation.Methods: Subjects consisted of 4,688 adults who participated in the 2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Depression was defined by Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score ≥ 10 or a previous diagnosis of depression. NAFLD was defined by hepatic steatosis index >36. Insulin resistance was assessed by triglycerides and glucose (TyG) index. Inflammation was measured with C-reactive protein (CRP).Results: Depression had a significant association with TyG index (p = 0.005), but not with CRP. Depression was a significant predictor of NAFLD (OR = 1.63; 95% CI, 1.26-2.10; p < 0.001). Adjustment for sociodemographic features and waist circumference did not substantially affect the results. Further adjustment for comorbidities reduced the estimate for depression by 23% (OR = 1.56; 95% CI, 1.18-2.06; p = 0.002). Inclusion of CRP in a fully adjusted model did not affect the results. Addition of the TyG index decreased the estimate for depression by 28% (OR = 1.39; 95% CI, 0.88-2.19; p = 0.161), and the resulting estimate became no longer significant. The TyG index remained the independent predictor of outcome.Limitations: The absence of a structured diagnostic interview for depression and histological diagnosis of NAFLD.Conclusions: These data support an association of depression with NAFLD. Understanding the global distribution of atmospheric black carbon (BC) is essential for unveiling its climatic effect. However, there are still large uncertainties regarding the simulation of BC transport due to inadequate information about the removal process. We accessed the wet removal rate of BC in East Asia based on long-term measurements over the 2010–2016 period at three representative background sites (Baengnyeong and Gosan in South Korea and Noto in Japan). The average wet removal rate, represented by transport efficiency (TE), i.e., the fraction of undeposited BC particles during transport, was estimated to be 0.73 in East Asia from 2010 to 2016. According to the relationship between accumulated precipitation along trajectory and TE, the wet removal efficiency was lower in East and North China but higher in South Korea and Japan, implying the importance of the aging process and frequency of exposure to below- and in-cloud scavenging conditions during air mass transport. Moreover, the wet scavenging in winter and summer showed the highest and lowest efficiency, respectively, although the lowest removal efficiency in summer was primarily associated with a reduced BC aging process because the in-cloud scavenging condition was dominant. The average half-life and e -folding lifetime of BC were 2.8 and 7.1 d , respectively, which is similar to previous studies, but those values differed according to the geographical location and meteorological conditions of each site. Next, by comparing TE from the FLEXible PARTicle (FLEXPART) Lagrangian transport model (version 10.4), we diagnosed the scavenging coefficients (s -1) of the below- and in-cloud scavenging scheme implemented in FLEXPART. The overall median TE from FLEXPART (0.91) was overestimated compared to the measured value, implying the underestimation of wet scavenging coefficients in the model simulation. The median of the measured below-cloud scavenging coefficient showed a lower value than that calculated according to FLEXPART scheme by a factor of 1.7. On the other hand, the overall median of the calculated in-cloud scavenging coefficients from the FLEXPART scheme was highly underestimated by 1 order of magnitude, compared to the measured value. From an analysis of artificial neural networks, the convective available potential energy, which is well known as an indicator of vertical instability, should be considered in the in-cloud scavenging process to improve the representative regional difference in BC wet scavenging over East Asia. For the first time, this study suggests an effective and straightforward evaluation method for wet scavenging schemes (both below and in cloud), by introducing TE along with excluding effects from the inaccurate emission inventories. Objective: To determine the level of vitamin D and to identify the association between vitamin D and depressive symptoms in apparently healthy Korean male adults.Design: A retrospective study design. Among 43 513 participants between 1 March and 30 November 2018, after eliminating participants with a history of depression or vitamin D deficiency, 9058 were included. To determine the level of vitamin D, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] was measured. To assess the level of depression, the Korean version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) was used.Setting: South Korea.Participants: Male adults who underwent routine health check-ups.Results: The average vitamin D level was 22·31 ± 7·09 ng/ml as 25(OH)D, while the number of subjects in the vitamin D insufficiency group with a finding of <20 ng/ml was 3783 (41·8 %). The mean CES-D score in all subjects was 8·31 ± 5·97 points, and the proportion of the depressive symptoms group with a score of ≥16 was 8·71 %. The OR of patients in the depressive symptoms group also being in the insufficiency group was found to be 1·49 (95 % CI 1·12, 2·00).Conclusions: A total of 41·8 % of apparently healthy male adults had vitamin D levels <20 ng/ml. Background/objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between muscle weakness and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and whether the association is partly explained by insulin resistance or inflammation.Subjects/methods: Subjects were 3922 adults who participated in the 2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Relative grip strength (rGS; calculated as maximal grip strength divided by BMI) was used to predict NAFLD defined by NAFLD liver fat score. Participants were classified into four groups according to the quartiles of rGS distribution (Q1-Q4). Insulin resistance was assessed by triglycerides and glucose (TyG) index. Inflammation was measured with C-reactive protein (CRP). Fibrosis was assessed by the Fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4) and the NAFLD fibrosis score.Results: rGS had significant negative associations with TyG index and CRP (all p < 0.001). rGS was a significant predictor of NAFLD (OR, 0.54-0.19 in Q2-Q4 men; OR, 0.54-0.08 in Q2-Q4 women, all p < 0.001). Adjustment for other participant factors did not substantially affect the results. Addition of TyG index changed the estimates for NAFLD slightly and addition of CRP increased the ORs by 10-20% in Q3-Q4 women. In the subpopulation with NAFLD (n = 946), rGS showed strong inverse relationships with FIB-4 and NAFLD fibrosis score (all p < 0.001).Conclusions: Grip strength was inversely associated not only with the risk of NAFLD but also with its severity. The discovery of a thermally stable, high-density magnetic skyrmion phase is a key prerequisite for realizing practical skyrmionic memory devices. In contrast to the typical low-density Néel-type skyrmions observed in technologically viable multilayer systems, with Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, we report the discovery of a high-density homochiral Néel-type skyrmion phase in magnetic multilayer structures that is stable at high temperatures up to 733 K (≈460 °C). Micromagnetic simulations reveal that a high-density skyrmion phase can be stabilized at high temperature by deliberately tuning the magnetic anisotropy, magnetic field, and temperature. The existence of the high-density skyrmion phase in a magnetic multilayer system raises the possibility of incorporating chiral Néel-type skyrmions in ultrahigh-density spin memory devices. Moreover, the existence of this phase at high temperature shows its thermal stability, demonstrating the potential for skyrmion devices operating in thermally challenging modern electronic chips. Magnetic materials: High-density storage for low-power memory High-density, stable magnetic patterns that could be useful for energy-efficient computer memory have been created by scientists in South Korea. Skyrmions, magnetic patterns that behave somewhat like particles, are a promising technology for a new generation of low-power-consumption computer memory. A key requirement for such an application is a material that can support skyrmions at a high density to maximize the amount of information that can be stored. Hye Jung Chang and Jun Woo Choi from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology in Seoul and their co-workers have created a stack of magnetic thin films and observed so-called Néel skyrmions. Using an electron microscope, the team were able to observe high-density Néel skyrmions that were stable over a wide range of temperatures up to around 460 °C. Combining Lorentz transmission electron microscopy and micromagnetic simulations, we discover a high-density homochiral Néel-type skyrmion phase in a Pt/Co/Ru/Pt/CoFeB/Ru magnetic multilayer structure that is stable at high temperatures up to 733 K. The domain phase in this system can be modulated between a high-density skyrmion phase, an isolated skyrmion phase, or a stripe domain phase by appropriate tuning of external and material parameters. Background: The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as a bridge to lung transplantation has greatly increased. However, data regarding the clinical outcomes of this approach are lacking. The objective of this multicenter prospective observational cohort study was to evaluate lung transplantation outcomes in Korean Organ Transplantation Registry (KOTRY) patients for whom ECMO was used as a bridge to transplantation.Methods: Between March 2015 and December 2017, a total of 112 patients received lung transplantation and were registered in the KOTRY, which is a prospective, multicenter cohort registry. The entire cohort was divided into two groups: the control group (n = 85, 75.9%) and bridge-ECMO group (n = 27, 24.1%).Results: There were no significant differences in pre-transplant and intraoperative characteristics except for poorer oxygenation, more ventilator use, and longer operation time in the bridge-ECMO group. The prevalence of primary graft dysfunction at 0, 24, 48, and 72 h after transplantation did not differ between the two groups. Although postoperative hospital stays were longer in the bridge-ECMO group than in the control group, hospital mortality did not differ between the two groups (25.9% vs. 13.3%, P = 0.212). The majority of patients (70.4% of the bridge-ECMO group and 77.6% of the control group) were discharged directly to their homes. Finally, the use of ECMO as a bridge to lung transplantation did not significantly affect overall survival and graft function.Conclusions: Short- and long-term post-transplant outcomes of bridge-ECMO patients were comparable to recipients who did not receive ECMO. The black carbon (BC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emission ratios were estimated and compiled from long-term, harmonized observations of the ΔBC/ΔCO ratios under conditions unaffected by wet deposition at four sites in East Asia, including two sites in South Korea (Baengnyeong and Gosan) and two sites in Japan (Noto and Fukuoka). Extended spatio-temporal coverage enabled estimation of the full seasonality and elucidation of the emission ratio in North Korea for the first time. The estimated ratios were used to validate the Regional Emission inventory in ASia (REAS) version 2.1 based on six study domains ("East China", "North China", "Northeast China", South Korea, North Korea, and Japan). We found that the ΔBC/ΔCO ratios from four sites converged into a narrow range (6.2–7.9 ng m -3 ppb -1) , suggesting consistency in the results from independent observations and similarity in source profiles over the regions. The BC/CO ratios from the REAS emission inventory (7.7 ng m -3 ppb -1 for East China – 23.2 ng m -3 ppb -1 for South Korea) were overestimated by factors of 1.1 for East China to 3.0 for South Korea, whereas the ratio for North Korea (3.7 ng m -3 ppb -1 from REAS) was underestimated by a factor of 2.0, most likely due to inaccurate emissions from the road transportation sector. Seasonal variation in the BC/CO ratio from REAS was found to be the highest in winter (China and North Korea) or summer (South Korea and Japan), whereas the measured ΔBC/ΔCO ratio was the highest in spring in all source regions, indicating the need for further characterization of the seasonality when creating a bottom-up emission inventory. At levels of administrative districts, overestimation in Seoul, the southwestern regions of South Korea, and Northeast China was noticeable, and underestimation was mainly observed in the western regions in North Korea, including Pyongyang. These diagnoses are useful for identifying regions where revisions in the inventory are necessary, providing guidance for the refinement of BC and CO emission rate estimates over East Asia. Owing to an increase in leisure and industrial activities, the coastal activity area is expanding and the incidence of coastal accidents is increasing. To solve this problem, it is necessary to derive an optimal and efficient response plan that requires little manpower through a clear understanding of the characteristics and causes of accidents. To this end, this study classified accidents according to three criteria of location, type, and causes of accidents based on the coastal accident cases provided by the Korea Coast Guard and analyzed the correlation between each classification criteria by applying statistical techniques. On the west coast of Korea, where the tidal difference is large and it is highly correlated with isolation accidents caused by the tide, near sea rock and mudflats; on the east coast, where the frequency of high waves is high and it is highly correlated with falls or drift drowning accidents caused by waves near breakwaters and beaches. This correlation indicates that an effective proactive response is possible by identifying the type and cause of accidents by accident location. Coastal accidents can be reduced by eliminating coastal safety blind spots due to a lack of manpower through efficient management and supervision of coastal activity areas using the results of the correlation analysis between accident locations, types, and causes analyzed in this study. Background: There are limited data regarding prolonged extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support, despite increase in ECMO use and duration in patients with respiratory failure. The objective of this study was to investigate the outcomes of severe acute respiratory failure patients supported with prolonged ECMO for more than 28 days. Methods: Between January 2012 and December 2015, all consecutive adult patients with severe acute respiratory failure who underwent ECMO for respiratory support at 16 tertiary or university-affiliated hospitals in South Korea were enrolled retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups: short-term group defined as ECMO for ⩽28 days and long-term group defined as ECMO for more than 28 days. In-hospital and 6-month mortalities were compared between the two groups. Results: A total of 487 patients received ECMO support for acute respiratory failure during the study period, and the median support duration was 8 days (4–20 days). Of these patients, 411 (84.4%) received ECMO support for ⩽28 days (short-term group), and 76 (15.6%) received support for more than 28 days (long-term group). The proportion of acute exacerbation of interstitial lung disease as a cause of respiratory failure was higher in the long-term group than in the short-term group (22.4% versus 7.5%, p < 0.001), and the duration of mechanical ventilation before ECMO was longer (4 days versus 1 day, p < 0.001). The hospital mortality rate (60.8% versus 69.7%, p = 0.141) and the 6-month mortality rate (66.2% versus 74.0%, p = 0.196) were not different between the two groups. ECMO support longer than 28 days was not associated with hospital mortality in univariable and multivariable analyses. Conclusions: Short- and long-term survival rates among patients receiving ECMO support for more than 28 days for severe acute respiratory failure were not worse than those among patients receiving ECMO for 28 days or less. The Gram-positive rhizosphere bacterium Paenibacillus polymyxa promotes plant growth and produces various antibiotics. Herein, we review research on this species over the past two and a half decades, and focus on the mechanisms of P. polymyxa strain E681, isolated from barley roots in the South Korea in 1995. Strain E681 has outstanding growth-promoting effects on barley, cucumber, pepper, sesame, and Arabidopsis thaliana and produces antimicrobial compounds that protect plants against pathogenic fungi, oomycetes, and bacteria. Induced systemic resistance elicited by treating seeds or roots with strain E681 is a possible mechanism for protecting systemic plant tissues from biotic and other environmental stresses. Genome sequencing has broadened our horizons for antibiotic development and other industrial applications beyond agricultural use. At least six gene clusters for the biosynthesis of antibiotics have been discovered, including polymyxin (pmx), which was recently re-instated as an antibiotic of last resort against Gram-negative drug-resistant bacteria. Three groups of antibiotic synthetases include the gene clusters that encode one for the non-ribosomal peptide polymyxin, fusaricidin, and tridecaptin, another for the lantibiotic paenilan, and the third for a polyketide. We successfully introduced the pmx gene cluster into the surrogate host Bacillus subtilis and created polymyxin derivatives by domain swapping. Furthermore, various E681 derivatives, including a high fusaricidin producer and strains lacking multi-antibiotics production, have been constructed by random mutagenesis and genome engineering. • The method derives complementary information for policy improvements. • The institutional evaluation method can be defined as an optimization problem. • The proposed method was applied to Korea's renewable energy evaluation system. • Excessive incentives for batteries can overestimate the contribution of renewable energy. Countries around the world are legislating the obligation to install renewable energy systems (RESs) in buildings to achieve global carbon neutrality. The evaluation of the appropriateness of this obligation is mostly carried out at the early design stage of a project. Policymakers should repeatedly modify and complement the policy to ensure that the institutional evaluation method accurately reflects the performance of the RES that will actually be built. This study proposes a methodology that combines optimization algorithms and dynamic simulation techniques to derive policy complements for the renewable energy installation obligation (REIO) regulation being implemented in Seoul. The methodology involves a process that mathematically models the evaluation basis of REIO and identifies exception outliers from standard based on optimization techniques. Through a case study of Seoul REIO regulation using the proposed methodology, it was found that when incentives for energy storage system installation are either too weak or excessive, it can increase the gap between the institutional evaluation results and simulation evaluation results for the RES energy performance. Purpose: Recently, the diastolic strain rate (DSR) utilizing speckle‐tracking echocardiography has been proposed as a novel parameter for left ventricular diastolic function. We aimed to present normal reference data for those in a large‐sized, selected group of healthy individuals. Methods: The current study was a part of the Normal echOcardiogRaphic Measurements in KoreAn popuLation (NORMAL), a prospective nationwide survey from 23 centers in Korea. We analyzed 447 subjects (age 48 ± 15 years, 234 females) without any history of cardiovascular disease and presented the early and late DSRs (SRe and SRa, respectively) in a total and gender‐/age‐specified groups. Results: Among the total subjects, the mean SRe and SRa were 1.6 ± 0.4 S−1 and 0.8 ± 0.3 S−1, respectively. With increasing age, there were significant trends of decreasing SRe and increasing SRa. Although both gender groups showed comparable age, the female group presented significantly higher SRe compared to male subjects with age of 20–59 years, which diminished after the age of 60 years. However, the SRa was comparable between genders in all age groups. On multiple linear regression, age showed independent associations with both SRe (β = −0.132, P = .010) and SRa (β = 0.440, P < .001), whereas gender did not show any association with SRe or SRa. Conclusion: We present normal reference data of a novel parameter, DSR, in a large‐sized selected group with healthy Korean subjects. Background: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of excessive alcohol consumption on heart reflected by various echocardiographic parameters according to the presence or absence of flushing reaction that might reflect acetaldehyde metabolism. Methods: A total of 854 Korean men without significant cardiovascular diseases who underwent echocardiography and participated in the Korean Healthy Twin Study were used as subjects of this study. These subjects were classified into 3 categories: nondrinker, moderate drinker (≤196 g/wk), and heavy drinker (>196 g/wk) within 2 strata of flushing reaction to alcohol drinking. Association between echocardiographic measurements and categories of the amount of alcohol consumption considering flushing reaction were evaluated using mixed linear regression model. Results: The proportion of flushers among drinkers was 39.5% (278 of 703). In stratified analysis by flushing reaction, nonflushers showed significantly higher left ventricular mass index (β: 4.605; 95% CI: 0.966, 8.243) and significantly lower ratio of peak early diastolic velocities (E peak) over peak late diastolic velocities of mitral inflow (β: −0.103; 95% CI: −0.198, −0.008) in heavy drinkers compared to nondrinkers. Flushers showed significantly higher left atrial (LA) volume index (β: 2.712; 95% CI: 0.456, 4.968) in heavy drinkers and significantly lower ratio of E peak over the peak early diastolic mitral annular velocities (β: −0.493; 95% CI: −0.902, −0.085) in moderate drinkers compared to nondrinkers. However, the interaction according to flushing reaction was only statistically significant for the association between alcohol consumption and LA volume index (p for interaction = 0.004). Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between social policy and late-life happiness by analyzing the impact of the basic old-age pension on the happiness of older people in South Korea.Design/methodology/approach People aged 65 and over selected from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing are analyzed in the study.Findings It shows that the association between the basic old-age pension and the happiness of older people is negative. This may be attributable to the frugality of the benefits and the side effects of the means test.Originality/value This implies that the relationship between social policy and late-life happiness is not linear but it is affected by the context of the policy. The complete mitochondrial genome of Pseudemys peninsularis in Korea was sequenced and characterized. The mitochondrial genome is constituted of 37 genes (13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and two ribosomal RNA genes) and a noncoding region. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 13 protein-coding gene sequences showed that P. peninsularis has closer relationship with Chrysemys picta than Trachemys scripta elegans. This is the first case for a complete mitochondrial genome from P. peninsularis, which will provide information for biogeographical studies and management plans for invasive species. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to closely examine the economic status of households that include individuals with intellectual disabilities in South Korea as well as the factors contributing to their poverty dynamics. The 2008 and 2012 panel data from the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled were used to determine the income movement, poverty dynamics, and income patterns of families in the sustained nonpoverty and sustained poverty groups. Data from 87 households that include individuals with intellectual disabilities was used for analysis. Income mobility was assessed using a transition matrix between 2008 and 2012, and poverty and nonpoverty were determined based on the absolute poverty standard. Poverty dynamics were classified by the changes in poverty status in 2008 and 2012, including sustained poverty, sustained nonpoverty, poverty exit, and poverty entry. Income patterns were composed of earned income, social insurance, property income, and transfer income. The results showed that 66.7% of the households including individuals with intellectual disabilities showed no movement in income distribution and 82.8% of these families stayed in the lowest income distribution for both periods. The demographic characteristics of education level, multiple disabilities, and change in the number of employed members of the household were related to poverty dynamics. The ratio of earned income in the sustained nonpoverty group was significantly higher than that of the sustained poverty group, whereas the public transfer income ratio was significantly higher than in the sustained-poverty group in 2008 and 2012. To reduce the prevalence and severity of poverty among households with individuals with intellectual disabilities, opportunities and quality of employment need to be secured, not only for individuals with intellectual disabilities, but also for their supporting family members. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the effect of the National Pension Scheme (NPS) on the economic well-being of older people in South Korea.Design/methodology/approach It analyses older people aged 60 and over sampled from the third wave of the Korean retirement and income study.Findings The analysis shows a gendered effect. The NPS is positively associated with the economic well-being of only older men. This gendered impact is probably attributable to the inherent patriarchal structure of the NPS that is based on the strong male bread-winner model.Originality/value The results suggest that promoting the female labour market participation, and also reforming the gender structure of the NPS and South Korean labour market, can be a potential policy option to amend gendered economic well-being in later life. Background Exercise stress echocardiography ( ESEcho) is sufficiently sensitive and has high enough specificity for the clinical detection of coronary artery disease ( CAD) in women. However, there was little data about the ability of ESEcho to detect CAD and predict clinical outcomes in female patients with chest pain and low global cardiovascular ( CV) risks. The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the diagnostic accuracy of ESEcho, (2) to evaluate the clinical outcomes of major cardiovascular outcome ( MACE), and (3) to assess the incremental prognostic value of ESEcho for the prediction of MACE in Korean female patients with low CV risks. Methods Over a period of 15 years, 3396 patients (57±10 years) female patients with chest pain but no previous history of CAD undergoing ESEcho and exercise stress electrocardiography ( ESECG) were assessed. Results During a median follow-up period of 4.8 years (2.8-6.2 years), there were 19 (0.61%) MACE. Positive results for ESEcho were seen in 134 patients (3.9%). The sensitivity and specificity of ESEcho were 66.7% and 84.8%, respectively. Positive ESEcho was an independent predictor of MACE (multivariate hazard ratio: 0.019, 95% CI: 0.004-0.081). ESEcho was incremental to clinical and ESECG parameters to predict the MACE in low CV risk women. Conclusions ESEcho is effective for the diagnosis of CAD in Korean female patients with chest pain, a population characterized by low cardiovascular risk profiles. Positive ESEcho was an independent predictor of MACE, and negative results were associated with favorable clinical outcomes. Background: Portal hypertensive gastropathy (PHG) is a frequently overlooked complication of liver cirrhosis (LC). The clinical implications of PHG as a prognostic factor of LC or a predictive factor for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have not been established. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical significance of PHG in patients with LC.Methods: Patients with LC were prospectively enrolled and followed in a single tertiary hospital in the Republic of Korea. Baseline hepatic vein pressure gradient (HVPG) was measured, and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) was performed. The associations of PHG with HVPG, survival and the development of HCC were evaluated.Results: A total of 587 patients were enrolled. The mortality rate was 20.3 % (n = 119), and HCC developed in 9.2 % (n = 54) during the follow-up period (32.6 ± 27.8 months). The grade of PHG was well correlated with HVPG (no PGH: median 9.2 [IQR: 7.2-16.7], mild PHG: 14.6 [10.1-19.3], and severe PHG: 17.3 [12.3-21.5], P < 0.001), as well as with Child-Pugh class, MELD score or survival. However, it was not associated with the development of HCC. The grade of PHG (HR 3.29, 95 % CI: 1.12-9.63, severe vs. no PHG) and Child-Pugh class (HR 3.53, 95 % CI: 1.79-6.97, Child C vs A) showed significant associations with mortality.Conclusion: PHG was well correlated with portal hypertension and could be used as a prognostic factor for LC but not for the prediction of HCC. Background: This study investigated whether the prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension and diabetes differed by residential areas. In addition, the rate of good hypertension or diabetes control was examined separately in men and women, and in urban and rural areas.Methods: This study used Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination V (2010-2012) data, a nationwide cross-sectional survey of general South Korean population. Residential areas were categorized into urban and rural areas. To examine differences between the residential areas in terms of prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension and diabetes we performed a multivariate logistic regression adjusting for age, body mass index, physical activity, alcohol use, smoking, marital status, monthly income, and educational level. To investigate control of hypertension or diabetes within each residential area, we performed a subgroup analysis in both urban and rural areas.Results: The prevalence of hypertension is higher among men in urban areas than among those in rural areas (OR = 0.80; 95 % CI = 0.67-0.96, reference group = urban areas). However, the subgroups did not differ in terms of diabetes prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control. Regardless of both sex and residential area, participants in good control of their hypertension and diabetes were younger. Inequality in good control of hypertension was observed in men who lived in urban (≤Elementary school, OR 0.74, 95 % CI 0.60-0.92) and rural areas (≤Elementary school, OR 0.67, 95 % CI 0.46-0.99). Inequality in health status was found in women who resided in urban areas (≤Elementary school, OR 0.53, 95 % CI 0.37-0.75). Good control of diabetes also showed inequalities in health status for both men (≤Elementary school, OR 0.61, 95 % CI 0.40-0.94; Middle/High school, OR 0.69, 95 % CI 0.49-0.96) and women in urban areas (≤1 million won, OR 0.56, 95 % CI 0.33-0.93) (Reference group = '≥College' for education and '>3 million' Korean won for income).Conclusions: After correction for individual socioeconomic status, differences by residential area were not observed. However, when the participants with good disease control were divided by region, inequality was confirmed in urban residents. Aims: Most patients with idiopathic ventricular premature depolarizations (VPDs) complain of symptoms related to this arrhythmia, but some patients are asymptomatic even with a high VPD burden. Our understanding of the relationship between symptoms and cardiomyopathy related to this arrhythmia remains limited.Methods and Results: We evaluated 801 subjects (381 men; mean age, 55 ± 17 years) who visited our outpatient clinic. All subjects were diagnosed with frequent VPDs (1% or >1000 beats/day). The patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of typical VPD symptoms (palpitations or skipped beats during VPDs): symptomatic patients (n = 455) and asymptomatic patients (n = 346). Clinical and electrocardiogram parameters were compared between these two groups. In the symptomatic group, palpitations were the most frequent symptom (91%). Daily VPD burden (P = 0.90) and electrocardiogram parameters (P>0.05) did not differ significantly between groups. The incidence of frequent VPDs with left ventricular dysfunction was significantly higher in the asymptomatic group (symptomatic patients, 3.0%; asymptomatic patients, 10.5%; P < 0.001).Conclusion: The absence of typical VPD-related symptoms may be a risk factor for cardiomyopathy and be associated with an adverse outcome. Introduction: Studies have demonstrated that technological innovation is vital for prosperous economies, and greater technological innovation leads to improved public health indicators. The South Korean government has implemented policies to provide city services using information communication technologies, and ubiquitous healthcare (u-healthcare) wellness is one of these. This article presents the effects of using a u-healthcare center model that proves self-healthcare monitoring can work for the general population. Materials and Methods: The u-healthcare center has provided service to the public since April 2013. It is equipped with medical devices that evaluate physiological parameters such as weight, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure (BP), pulse rate (PR), and body fat (BF). This article focuses on the analysis of BMI, BP, PR, and BF parameters. Results: Health test results from 12,766 voluntary patients of the u-healthcare center were analyzed during a 1-year period. The four health parameters from each of the four seasons were analyzed and compared, showing statistically significant seasonal differences. A Duncan's post hoc analysis showed that BMI did not differ between spring and summer, whereas BP differed throughout all seasons. Participation of females was higher compared with males, and men's average BMI was statistically higher than that of the women. Some additional significant findings for all participants were as follows: 48.8% scored normal in BMI, 31.7% scored normal-controlled in BP, 90.7% scored normal in PR, and 24.8% scored normal in BF. A survey showed that 96.4% found the u-healthcare center to be generally helpful, and 95.7% responded that they would recommend it. Conclusions: Implementation of u-healthcare projects provides a new public service toward evaluating health parameters, providing historical health information access, promoting self-monitoring, and motivating users to be more aware of their own health status. The anticancer properties and mechanism of action of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3-PUFAs) have been demonstrated in several cancers; however, the mechanism in lung cancer remains unclear. Here, we show that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a ω3-PUFA, induced apoptosis and autophagy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. DHA-induced cell death was accompanied by AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation and inactivated phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling. Knocking down AMPK and overexpressing Akt increased mTOR activity and attenuated DHA-induced cell death, suggesting that DHA induces cell death via AMPK- and Akt-regulated mTOR inactivation. This was confirmed in Fat-1 transgenic mice, which produce ω3-PUFAs. Lewis lung cancer (LLC) tumor cells implanted into Fat-1 mice showed slower growth, lower phospho-Akt levels, and higher levels of apoptosis and autophagy than cells implanted into wild-type mice. Taken together, these data suggest that DHA-induced apoptosis and autophagy in NSCLC cells are associated with AMPK activation and PI3K/Akt inhibition, which in turn lead to suppression of mTOR; thus ω3-PUFAs may be utilized as potential therapeutic agents for NSCLC treatment. Purpose: There is no established standard treatment for patients with locally advanced biliary tract cancer (BTC). Methods: We analyzed the treatment results of locally advanced BTC from Jan 1995 to Dec 2010 at single institution of South Korea with retrospective study. One hundred and seventy-six patients were eligible to investigate the treatment response and toxicity. We treated these patients with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)- or gemcitabine (GEM)-based concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) or best supportive care (BSC). The primary end point was overall survival. Results: Of these locally advanced BTC patients, 106 patients received CCRT and 70 patients were treated with BSC. The median overall survival was 42.57 weeks (95 % confidence interval [CI], 35.85-49.30) in CCRT group and 13.29 weeks (95 % CI 10.42-16.15) in BSC group ( P < 0.001). Nausea and anemia were the most common toxicities observed. Conclusions: Patients with locally advanced BTC who were treated with 5-FU-based or GEM-based CCRT seem to have a better survival than those who received BSC. The treatment-related toxicity was mild.
