This study investigates the impact of the sea surface temperature (SST) on the forecast of two typhoons, which consecutively hit South Korea in 2020. SST data were obtained from the Daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST) version 2 and HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model/Navy Coupled Ocean Data Assimilation (HYCOM/NCODA; GLBy0.08/expt_93.0). When verified using in situ observational data, the OISST data did not accurately estimate the changes in SST during each typhoon's landfall period compared to the HYCOM data since it has a relatively low temporal resolution. To investigate the impact of these two SST data on typhoon forecasts, we conducted sensitivity experiments using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The results showed that simulated typhoon intensities were significantly improved in the simulations with HYCOM data (HY runs), while typhoon track forecast performances were similar in both runs. In addition, the forecast performances of the maximum wind speed at 10 m during the typhoon landfall period were improved in the HY runs. Therefore, this study showed that the overall typhoon intensity and forecast performances during the landfall period could be improved when the higher temporal-resolution SST data were prescribed in the model boundary conditions for a better representation of typhoon-induced SST changes. South Korea and Japan have been unwaveringly committed to a nuclear-focused energy supply system despite the contested nature of that technology and the Fukushima accident in 2011. The socio-political consequences of four nuclear-related facilities (Ulju, Gyeongju, Futaba, and Rokkasho) are explored through the lens of social peripheralisation. This framework suggests that nuclear facilities will migrate to communities that are geographically remote, economically marginal, politically powerless, culturally defensive, and environmentally degraded. Nuclear infrastructures in the four cases are imposed on peripheral regions, impairing not only the structure of local economies and political power, but also creating a discriminative structure in terms of social and environmental inequality. Peripheralisation suggests a deeper dynamic by which pro-nuclear attitudes become ‘locked in’ socially and culturally so that communities come to depend on the very processes that made them peripheral. Community dynamics, subnational struggles, and contests over local power relations may determine the future of nuclear power. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Laboratory experiments were performed to measure the supercritical CO2 (scCO2) storage ratio (%) of conglomerate and sandstone in the Janggi Basin, which are classified as rock in Korea that are available for CO2 storage. The scCO2 storage capacity was evaluated by direct measurement of the amount of scCO2 replacing the pore water in each reservoir rock core. The scCO2 sealing capacity of the cap rock (i.e., tuff and mudstone) was also compared by measuring the scCO2 capillary entry pressure (Δp) into the rock core. The measured average scCO2 storage ratio of the conglomerate and the sandstone were 30.7% and 13.1%, respectively, suggesting that the scCO2 storage capacity was greater than 360,000 metric tons. The scCO2 capillary entry pressure for the tuff ranged from 15 to 20 bar and for the mudstone it was higher than 150 bar, suggesting that the mudstone layers had enough sealing capacity from the aspect of hydromechanics. From XRF analyses, before and after 90 d of the scCO2-water-cap rock reaction, the mudstone and the tuff were investigated to assure their geochemical stability as the cap rock. From the study, the Janggi Basin was considered an optimal CO2 storage site based on both its high scCO2 storage ratio and high capillary entry pressure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agastache rugosa (fisch. & C.A. Mey.) Kuntze (A. rugosa) is used in traditional medicine in Korea since it has variety of medicinal activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-photoaging. Acacetin, tilianin, and rosmarinic acid are the active components of A. rugosa but their metabolites have not yet been fully identified. The purpose of this study was to identify the metabolites of A. rugosa after oral administration in Sprague-Dawley rats. For this study, active components (acacetin, tilianin, rosmarinic acid) and A. rugosa extract were dissolved in 0.5% carboxymethyl cellulose sodium solution respectively and treated by oral gavage at a dose of 50 mg/kg (for single compounds) and 200 mg/kg (for A. rugosa extract). For metabolite identification, plasma, urine, and fecal samples were collected after oral administration and analyzed using liquid chromatography coupled with Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UPLC-Orbitrap-MS) for data acquisition and metabolite identification. Metabolite identification was performed by considering the mass difference of the metabolites from the parent compounds and using their exact m/z and MS/MS fragments. The main biotransformation of the major components of A. rugosa was hydrolysis to acacetin, followed by demethylation, methylation, and conjugation. That of rosmarinic acid is methylated and conjugated. There were differences in metabolism between the treatment of single active components and extract; some sulfate-conjugated metabolites or metabolic intermediates were only detected in the treatment of single active components. The reason for this is thought to be the low content of the active components in the extract, which react competitively with the components present in the extract in the metabolic process. This study provides valuable evidence for a comprehensive understanding of the metabolism of A. rugosa. The spotted-wing drosophila ( SWD), D rosophila suzukii ( Diptera: Drosophilidae), originally distributed across a few Asian countries including South Korea, has invaded North America and Europe but is absent from Australia. In order to export the South Korean grape cultivar Campbell Early to Australia, its potential to serve as an oviposition and development medium for SWD must first be determined. In this study, we determined the oviposition and development potential of SWD on Campbell Early, after elucidating the SWD life cycle and establishing an artificial diet-based mass-culturing system. An investigation of the life cycle under five temperature regimes (16, 19, 22, 25 and 28° C) showed that the durations of the egg, larval and adult stages were shortened when temperature was increased from 16, 19, 22, 25 and 28° C, but pupal duration was shortest at 25° C and extended again at 28° C. A test of oviposition and development potential of SWD on Campbell Early grape clusters showed oviposition of 30.8 ± 6.8 eggs per cluster of injured grapes and 157.7 ± 16.2 eggs on a culture dish of artificial diet. However, in a similar experiment using uninjured grape clusters, only a single egg was deposited on the grape skin, which soon dried. In light of these results, newly harvested grapes left at vineyards during daily harvests are unlikely to serve as an oviposition and development medium for SWD, as long as the grapes remain uninjured. Rhizofiltration experiments were conducted using uranium-contaminated groundwater and lettuce (Lactuca sativa), Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L.), radish (Raphanus sativus L.), and buttercup (Oenanthe javanica), which are commonly grown and consumed in South Korea. The results of the rhizofiltration experiments with artificial solutions with different initial uranium concentrations (18, 32, 84, 116, 173, and 263 μg/L) show that the uranium accumulation and bioconcentration factor (BCF) of plant roots increase with increasing uranium concentration in the groundwater. Among the four plants, the uranium concentration in the roots of Raphanus sativus L. is 1215.8 μg/g dry weight, with a maximum BCF value of 2692.7. The BCF value of the artificial solutions with various pH values (pH 3, 5, 7, and 9) is the highest under acidic conditions (pH 3) for all four plants. The uranium BCF values based on different hydroponic conditions range from 170.5 to 11580.3 and the results are comparable with those of other studies using similar methods; the highest BCF value was determined for Brassica campestris L. at pH 3. The BCF values of Raphanus sativus L. after the rhizofiltration experiments with genuine groundwater contaminated with uranium are the highest among the four species; that is, 1684.7 and 1700.1 in Oesam-dong and Bugokdong groundwater samples with uranium concentrations of 83 and 173 μg/L, respectively. The results of the scanning electron microscope/electron dispersive X-ray spectroscope analyses show that uranium in contaminated groundwater is adsorbed as a solid phase on the root surface. These results demonstrate that Raphanus sativus L. has a high tolerance to high concentrations of uranium and low pH conditions and a remarkable potential for uranium accumulation. This study investigates long‐term trends in tropical cyclones (TCs) over the extratropical western North Pacific (WNP) over a period of 35 years (1982–2016). The area analyzed extended across 30–45°N and 120–150°E, including the regions of Korea and Japan that were seriously affected by TCs. The northward migration of TCs over the WNP to the mid‐latitudes showed a sharp increase in early fall. In addition, the duration of TCs over the WNP that migrated northwards showed an increase, specifically in early to mid‐September. Therefore, more recently, TC tracks have been observed to significantly extend into the mid‐latitudes. The recent northward extension of TC tracks over the WNP in early fall was observed to be associated with changes in environmental conditions that were favorable for TC activities, including an increase in sea surface temperature (SST), decrease in vertical wind shear, expansion of subtropical highs, strong easterly steering winds, and an increase in relative vorticity. In contrast, northward migrations of TCs to Korea and Japan showed a decline in late August, because of the presence of unfavorable environmental conditions for TC activities.
