Simple Summary: Established in 2002, the Korean Gynecologic Oncology Group (KGOG) has presented improved clinical outcomes based on multi-center clinical trials. To date, KGOG has approved 156 studies and published 68 KGOG-led studies. The organization aims to advance gynecologic cancer research through sustained efforts and international collaboration. The Korean Gynecologic Oncology Group (KGOG) was established in 2002 and is the only organization in Korea conducting multi-center clinical trials for gynecologic cancers. Since its re-establishment as a non-profit organization in 2021, KGOG has grown significantly, now including 207 gynecologic oncology specialists from 76 hospitals. This growth is a testament to the dedication and hard work of all those involved in the organization. KGOG is committed to maximizing the activation of multi-center clinical research through policies that support patients with rare diseases and gynecologic cancer research, focusing on strengthening institutional capacity, equalizing participation opportunities, and enhancing information sharing. A significant milestone for KGOG was becoming a member of the US Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) in 2005, allowing participation in GOG clinical trials. KGOG later joined the Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup (GCIG) and strengthened its capabilities by hosting the first Endometrial Cancer Consensus Conference—Clinical Research (ECCC-CR) in 2023. KGOG holds biannual meetings and symposia, as well as 224 operating committee meetings annually to review the discussions of the Tumor Site Committee. KGOG has conducted 156 investigator-initiated trial (IIT) or sponsor-initiated trial (SIT) studies as KGOG-led or participated in research. Currently, 18 studies are registered, and 10 are in preparation. To date, 68 papers have been published. KGOG conducts six national projects and collaborates with external organizations such as the NRG Oncology Foundation, Gynecologic Oncology Group Partners (GOG-P), GCIG, East Asian Gynecologic Oncology Trial group (EAGOT), and the Japanese Gynecologic Oncology Group (JGOG). Through collaboration with renowned international research institutions, KGOG has significantly expanded the scope of its research, achieving noteworthy clinical outcomes. This report not only introduces the history and recent status of KGOG but also presents the exciting future direction of the organization, filled with potential breakthroughs and advancements in gynecologic oncology research. Play is regarded as a child's primary occupation and provides valuable information about the child's abilities. Thus, informative assessment tools of play skills are critical for establishing play-related treatment goals in occupational therapy. The objective of this study is to present a practical method for occupational therapists to develop intervention goals using the Yonsei-Social Play Evaluation Tool (Y-SPET) keyforms. Parent responses (n = 310) for preschool children (three to six years old) who did not have a medical diagnosis were examined. The Rasch measurement model was used to create keyforms for the Y-SPET. All children's raw scores were converted into individual Rasch-calibrated logit scores and standard errors were estimated to establish logically attainable treatment goals. Results showed use of the keyforms could logically identify the intervention goals of the children's social play. This suggests that the Y-SPET keyforms are helpful for assessing the level of children's social play and establishing practical treatment goals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the first North American origin class I avian orthoavulavirus 1 (AOAV-1) isolated from a faecal dropping of wild Eurasian teal (Anas crecca) in South Korea. Whole genome sequencing and comparative phylogenetic analysis revealed that the AOAV-1/Eurasian teal/South Korea/KU1405-3/2017 virus belongs to the sub-genotype 1.2 of class I AOAV-1. Phylogenetic analysis suggested multiple introductions of the North American sub-genotype 1.2 viruses into Asia and its establishment in the wild bird population in East Asia since May 2011. These results provide information on the epidemiology of AOAV-1, particularly the role of migratory wild birds in exchanging viruses between the Eurasian and North American continents. Aims. This study aimed to analyze the effects of the surgery preparation time on patient outcomes. Background. Postoperative complications have a decisive effect on postoperative survival. The anesthesia time is a crucial determinant of such complications. Competent operating room nurses can shorten the surgery preparation time, which is the time from when anesthesia is first administered to the making of the surgical incision. The shortening of this preparation time can shorten the anesthesia time and may reduce postoperative complications. However, discussion of this preparation time is insufficient. Therefore, this study analyzed the effect of the surgery preparation time on patient outcomes. Methods. From electronic health records data, this retrospective cohort study used the data of 1,944 patients who had been immediately admitted to the ICU after their surgery between 2017 and 2020. The patients were divided into two groups: ≥30 minutes preparation time and <30 minutes preparation time groups. We performed chi-squared tests and t-tests to determine differences in preoperation, intraoperation, and postoperation characteristics of the patients and patient outcomes based on the surgery preparation time. Furthermore, we performed a multiple logistic regression by including 12 adjusted variables to determine the influence of the surgery preparation time on patient outcomes. Results. Among the 1,944 patients, 820 were in the ≥30 minutes preparation time group and 1,124 in the <30 minutes preparation time group. The multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the surgery preparation time affects alertness (OR = 1.44; 95% CI: [1.09, 1.90]), ventilator application (OR = 1.32; 95% CI: [1.03, 1.70]), and length of stay in the ICU (OR = 1.69; 95% CI [1.16, 2.47]). Conclusions. The surgery preparation time affects postoperative patient outcomes. The competence of operating room nurses is the most essential aspect of the surgery preparation time. It is important to analyze operating room nurses' tasks, standardize the tasks, and educate nurses according to their experience level to reduce the surgery preparation time and improve patient outcomes. Background and purpose: Diagnosis of lymphoma involving the central nervous system (CNS) is challenging. This study aimed to explore the abnormal vestibular and ocular motor findings in CNS lymphoma. Methods: A retrospective search of the medical records identified 30 patients with CNS lymphoma presenting ocular motor and vestibular abnormalities from four neurology clinics of university hospitals in South Korea (22 men, age range 14–81 years, mean 60.6 ± 15.2). The demographic and clinical features and the results of laboratory, radiological and pathological evaluation were analyzed. Results: Patients presented with diplopia (13/30, 43%), vestibular symptoms (15/30, 50%) or both (2/30, 7%). In 15 patients with diplopia, abnormal ocular motor findings included ocular motor nerve palsy (n = 10, 67%), internuclear ophthalmoplegia (n = 2, 13%), external ophthalmoplegia (n = 2, 13%) and exophoria (n = 1, 7%). The vestibular abnormalities were isolated in 14 (82%) of 17 patients with vestibular symptoms and included combined unilateral peripheral and central vestibulopathy in three from lesions involving the vestibular nuclei. CNS lymphoma involved the brainstem (53%), cerebellum (33%), leptomeninges (30%), deep gray nuclei (23%) or cranial nerves (17%). Two patients showed the "double‐panda" sign by involving the midbrain. Conclusions: This study expands the clinical and radiological spectra of CNS lymphoma. Background This study was conducted as an effort to develop a Korean construction job exposure matrix (KoConJEM) based on 60 occupations recently consolidated by the construction workers mutual aid association for use by the construction industry. Methods The probability, intensity, and prevalence of exposure to 26 hazardous agents for 60 consolidated occupations were evaluated as binary (Yes/No) or four categories (1 to 4) by 30 industrial hygiene experts. The score for risk was calculated by multiplying the exposure intensity by the prevalence of exposure. Fleiss' kappa for each hazardous agent and occupation was used to determine agreement among the 30 experts. The JEM was expressed on a heatmap and a web-based dashboard to facilitate comparison of factors affecting exposure according to each occupation and hazardous agent. Results Awkward posture, heat/cold, heavy lifting, and noise were hazardous agents regarded as exposure is probable by at least one or more experts in all occupations, while exposure to asphalt fumes was considered hazardous in the smallest number of occupations (n = 5). Based on the degree of agreement among experts, more than half of the harmful factors and most occupations showed fair to good results. The highest risk value was 16 for awkward posture for most occupations other than safety officer. Conclusions The KoConJEM provides information on the probability, intensity, and prevalence of exposure to harmful factors, including most occupations employing construction workers; therefore, it may be useful in the conduct of epidemiological studies on assessment of health risk for construction workers. In South Korea, Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) collates greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories. However, the settlement category lacks a clear definition of land use and activity data. This study proposed a method for examining the settlement spatial extent and constructing activity data to estimate GHG emissions and absorption as a pilot calculation, as well as to provide data for land use classification. Utilizing cadastral maps (CDMs), settlement spatial extents were determined, with settlements occupying approximately 11% of the total land area in 2019, or 9% excluding overlaps. Activity data for settlements were established through a sampling method and analysis of aerial orthoimages from 2000 and 2019. After removing overlaps with digital forest type maps and smart farm maps, settlement activity data covered approximately 18.47% based on CDMs, or 12.66% excluding overlaps. In 2019, CO2 emissions and absorptions were estimated at 622.16 ktCO2yr−1 based on CDMs and 242.16 ktCO2yr−1, excluding overlaps. To enhance GHG inventory calculation consistency and compliance with TACCC principles, clear spatial extents for settlements must be established. Aims: This study aimed to examine the relationship between heart failure knowledge, self‐efficacy, social support, grit and self‐care behaviour in patients with heart failure and to identify factors associated with patients' self‐care behaviour. Background: Most patients with heart failure are not as active in implementing self‐care behavioural practices as recommended by the guidelines. Design: This descriptive cross‐sectional study was designed based on Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory. Methods: This study included 138 patients who were diagnosed with heart failure in an outpatient department of cardiology at a tertiary hospital in Korea. Data were collected between July and October 2020 using a structured questionnaire and electronic medical records. Data were analysed using the SPSS/WIN 27.0 program. Results: Grit had the strongest association with self‐care behaviour among patients with heart failure, followed by social support, self‐efficacy and heart failure knowledge. These variables accounted for approximately 52% of the variance in self‐care behaviour. Conclusions: Health‐care professionals should assess patients' grit and develop patient‐tailored grit enhancement programmes. Based on the social cognitive theory, nursing intervention programmes that can simultaneously manage cognitive (knowledge and self‐efficacy), social and environmental (social support) and behavioural support (grit) factors should be developed and applied to nursing practices to promote self‐care. (1) Background and Methods: This study evaluated characteristics of South Korean patients necessitating home-based primary care (HBPC) from 2018 to 2022, distinguishing between homebound individuals with chronic conditions and those with registered disabilities. (2) Result: Among 171 HBPC recipients, 56.1% were homebound, predominantly older with a median age of 81 years (interquartile range (IQR 68.5–86.0)), while 43.9% were disabled, generally younger with a median age of 39 years (IQR, 28–64). Activities of daily living were assessed, revealing a median score of 14 (IQR, 10–19), indicative of high care dependency. The most common conditions among homebound patients were dementia (27.1%) and physical mobility difficulties (21.9%), whereas mental disabilities (53.3%) and mobility issues (36.0%) prevailed in disabled patients. The primary HBPC needs for homebound patients included management of acute medical conditions (27.1%) and sores (17.7%). Conversely, regular health check-ups (46.7%) and management of neuropsychiatric symptoms (26.7%) were prevalent among the disabled group. (3) Conclusion: Notably, over 90% of HBPC patients required assistance with daily activities, highlighting significant differences in the needs and characteristics between older, homebound individuals with multiple comorbidities and younger, disabled patients receiving medical aid. We isolated a high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) virus from a common pochard (Aythya ferina) that was being attacked by a bird of prey in South Korea in December 2020. Genetic analyses indicated that the isolate was closely related to the clade 2.3.4.4b H5N8 HPAI viruses found in South Korea and Japan during the winter season of 2020–2021. The histopathological examination revealed multifocal necrotizing inflammation in the liver, kidney, and spleen. Viral antigens were detected in the liver, kidney, spleen, trachea, intestine, and pancreas, indicating the HPAI virus caused a systemic infection. The presence of immunoreactivity for the viral antigen was observed in the cells involved in multifocal necrotic inflammation. Notably, epitheliotropic-positive patterns were identified in the epithelial cells of the trachea, mucosal epithelium of the intestine, and ductular epithelium of the pancreas. These findings provide direct evidence supporting the possibility of HPAI transmission from infected waterfowl to predators. Los análisis genéticos indicaron que el aislado estaba estrechamente relacionado con virus de influenza aviar de alta patogenicidad H5N8, clado 2.3.4.4 b encontrados en Corea del Sur y Japón durante la temporada de invierno de 2020–2021. El examen histopatológico reveló inflamación necrotizante multifocal en hígado, riñón y bazo. Se detectaron antígenos virales en el hígado, el riñón, el bazo, la tráquea, el intestino y el páncreas, lo que indica que este virus de alta patogenicidad causó una infección sistémica. The primary purpose of this study was to ascertain whether the degree to which Korean middle school students perceived their teachers to be credible made a difference in the effectiveness of teachers' persuasion as a source of students' academic self-efficacy. In the contexts of both general school learning and a specific subject of Korean language and literature, social persuasions by teachers were a significant predictor of student self-efficacy. Students' academic self-efficacy, in turn, was a significant predictor of students' expected final examination scores. Although perceived teacher credibility did not predict student self-efficacy directly, it interacted significantly with teacher persuasion in the prediction of student self-efficacy, as determined by the latent interaction analysis. Consistent with Bandura's assertion and our hypothesis, students reported stronger academic self-efficacy as they perceived the teachers who delivered the social persuasion to be more credible.

College drinking is an important public health issue in many countries, especially in South Korea. This study aims to explore drinking motives and their relationship with drinking behaviors and drinking outcomes among Korean college students (N = 553). Utilizing a Web-based survey, this study found some similarities and differences relative to studies conducted in Western cultures. As previously observed, social and enhancement motives were the primary reasons for drinking, and enhancement motives were associated with drinking-related problems among Korean students. However, results differing from those of previous studies were revealed by comparing males and females: Korean male college students who drink to cope with stress tend to experience more alcohol-related problems, whereas Korean female college students tend to experience alcohol-related problems when drinking for enhancement motives. Implications for future research are discussed.

This study developed and evaluated the effects of a mobile-integrated simulation training program on infection prevention and nursing practices based on past experiences of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) care. We developed mobile videos for the experimental group and an educational booklet for the control group based on the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model. The effects of the simulation program with the use of mobile videos on knowledge of COVID-19 management, infection prevention practice confidence, and clinical decision-making anxiety and confidence were analyzed through a randomized controlled pretest–posttest experimental design. Data from 109 participants were analyzed. Five mobile videos were developed with a total duration of 43 min and 13 s. The experimental group showed significantly greater improvement in knowledge of COVID-19 management (p = 0.002) and infection prevention practice confidence (p < 0.001). Using the mobile-integrated COVID-19 nursing practice simulation program, nurses who have no experience with emerging infectious diseases can increase their infection control knowledge and infection prevention practice confidence. In conclusion, the mobile-integrated COVID-19 nursing practice simulation program was effective in increasing infection control knowledge and infection prevention practice confidence in nurses without COVID-19 care experience. We aimed to assess the temporal trends of incident syphilis and its associated risk factors among men with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) in Korea during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of men with HIV attending an HIV clinic in Korea between 2005 and 2022. Of 767 men with HIV, 499 were included and contributed 3220 person-years (PY) of the observation period. Eighty-two patients were diagnosed with incident syphilis, with an overall incidence of 2.55/100 PY (95% confidence interval [CI] 20.56–31.53). The incidence of syphilis per 100 PY gradually decreased from 2.43 (0.79–7.42) in 2005–2007 to 1.85 (1.08–3.17) in 2014–2016; however, it increased to 3.0 (1.99–4.53) in 2017–2019, and further to 3.33 (2.26–4.89) in 2020–2022. A multivariate analysis identified young age (≤30 years versus >50, adjusted HR 6.27, 95% CI 2.38–16.56, p < 0.001), treponemal test positive at baseline (2.33, 1.48–3.67, p < 0.001), men who have sex with men (2.36, 1.34–4.16, p = 0.003), and history of incarceration (2.62, 1.21–5.67, p = 0.015) as risk factors for incident syphilis. Recently, syphilis incidence in men with HIV has increased in Korea, especially in young patients and at-risk groups, highlighting the need for enhanced regular screening and targeted behavioral interventions among these populations. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are types of phytoplankton overgrowth that adversely affect marine ecosystems and aquaculture resources. One such HAB species, Cochlodinium polykrikoides, occurs irregularly and causes significant damage to the aquaculture industry along the coastal regions of Korea. In this study, we developed and implemented an integrated system to detect and predict HAB occurrences in real time. This system comprises four main components: (1) a real-time detection system utilizing acoustic sensing, ocean weather, water temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll, satellite images, genetic analysis, and optics; (2) a prediction model system based on current and tidal, HAB occurrence, and HAB movement and diffusion models; (3) an additional data based on HAB information of sampling data and HAB information of GPS data, and (4) an integrated information system utilizing data storage servers and a visualization platform. We applied and assessed the efficiency of this integrated system in the South Sea of Korea from 2017 to 2019. Particularly, HABs occurred significantly in 2019, and the system demonstrated the feasibility of detection and prediction under field conditions. Implementing a more advanced integrated detection and prediction system in the field is anticipated to minimize the damage caused by irregular HAB occurrences every year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the applicability of the theory of planned behavior to understand factors that influence whether young South Koreans help peers with depression to seek professional counseling services. The structural equation modeling on the survey data collected from 191 South Korean students suggests that subjective norms and behavioral control could be salient factors for young South Koreans to take initiative and assist their peers in need of counseling services.

This study aimed to investigate the correlation among the contents of marker compounds, growth characteristics, and environmental factors of Schisandra chinensis fruits across South Korea. The fruits were collected from 36 cultivation sites in 28 regions across the country. We investigated nine growth characteristics, twelve soil physicochemical properties, eight meteorological data, and three marker compounds in this study. We optimized and validated an optimized method for quantifying marker compounds using UPLC and performed correlation analysis among the contents of marker compounds, growth characteristics, and environmental factors. The UPLC-UV method for analyzing marker compounds was validated by measuring linearity, LOD, LOQ, precision, and accuracy. The marker compounds were negatively correlated with the fruit size and sugar contents, and growth characteristics were negatively correlated with some physicochemical properties of the soil. Introduction: Integrative Korean medicine treatment (IKM), including herbal medicine (HM) and acupuncture, has been widely used for obesity and overweight in children and adolescents in South Korea. We investigated the real-world usage status and the potential effect of the IKM for obesity and overweight in children and adolescents.Methods: Multicenter medical charts were retrospectively reviewed of obese and overweight children and adolescents who visited Korean medicine institutions with the goal of weight control for the first time and received IKM, to analyze the usage status and effect of IKM. We defined IKM responders as those with an improved obesity grade on the body mass index (BMI) percentile and analyzed their characteristics.Results: Medical charts of 209 patients (183 obese and 26 overweight) with a mean age of 11.45 years were examined. Patients visited the institution a mean of 5.95 times, and HM alone and HM plus acupuncture were frequently used IKM. HM was prescribed to 205 patients, 167 of whom received an HM prescription containing Ephedrae Herba. An HM of the decoction type was prescribed to 189 patients, and the average treatment duration was 76.54 days. After IKM, the percentile and z-score of BMI and weight significantly declined and height percentile and z-score were significantly enhanced, without serious adverse events. In the IKM responders, age, and the proportion of girls and overweight were significantly higher, and the percentile and z-score of height, weight, and BMI were significantly lower.Conclusion: This is the first study to examine the real-world usage of IKM for obesity and overweight in children and adolescents. The growth characteristics and active compounds of plants are influenced by various environmental factors, including light, temperature, soil, and precipitation. These factors interact with each plant in a unique way. In this study, we collected fruit and soil samples from 17 cultivation sites in October 2020 to investigate the relationship among environmental factors, growth characteristics, and active compounds of H. dulcis seed and fruit. We developed an optimized method for quantifying active compounds using ultra-performance liquid chromatography and performed correlation analyses with the surveyed environmental factors. Results showed that the size and fresh weight of H. dulcis fruits were positively correlated with exchangeable Mg, Na, and silt texture proportion in the soil. The temperature was positively correlated with sugar content in the fruits but negatively correlated with fruit weight, and precipitation was negatively correlated with fruit size. Results also showed a positive correlation between the active compounds and growth characteristics such as fruit length, seed number per fruit, and fresh weight. Emojis have been widely used in computer-mediated communication. This study examined how cultural identification with individualism and collectivism influences Americans' interpretations and choices of emojis commonly used in South Korea. We also investigated the moderating effects of intercultural communication competence (ICC) and emotional intelligence (EI). Results from a sample of college students in the U.S. (N = 369) showed that the identification with individualism and collectivism played a significant role in interpreting and selecting appropriate emojis. Moreover, ICC and EI significantly moderated the relationships. These findings enhance understanding of cross-cultural differences in understanding emojis in CMC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Few studies have focused on high‐flow nasal cannula (HFNC) usage in the last few weeks of life. The aim of this study was to identify the status of HFNC use in patients with cancer at the end of life and the relevant clinical factors. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study in a tertiary hospital in the Republic of Korea. Among patients with cancer who died between 2018 and 2020, those who initiated HFNC within 14 days before death were included. Patients were categorized based on the time from HFNC initiation to death as imminent (<4 days) and non‐imminent (≥4 days). Results: Among the 2191 deceased patients with terminal cancer, 329 (15.0%) were analyzed. The median age of the patients was 66 years, and 62.9% were male. The leading cause of respiratory failure was pneumonia (70.2%), followed by pleural effusion (30.7%) and aggravation of lung neoplasms (18.8%). Most patients were conscious (79.3%) and had resting dyspnea (76.3%) at HFNC initiation. Patients received HFNC therapy for a mean of 3.4 days in the last 2 weeks of life, and 62.6% initiated it within 4 days before death. Furthermore, female sex, no palliative care consultation, no advance statements in person on life‐sustaining treatment, and no resting dyspnea were independently associated with the imminent use of HFNC. Conclusions: Many patients with cancer started HFNC therapy at the point of imminent death. However, efforts toward goal‐directed use of HFNC at the end‐of‐life stage are required. This study illustrates the status of high‐flow nasal cannula use in patients with terminal cancer at the end of life. Efforts to communicate patients' stated goals of care may help enhance goal‐concordant use of high‐flow nasal cannula at the end of life and reduce initiating in an imminently dying state. Respecting the preference for a place of care is essential for advance care planning in patients with advanced cancer. This retrospective study included adult patients with cancer referred to an inpatient palliative care consultation team at a tertiary acute care hospital in South Korea between April 2019 and December 2020. Patients' preference for place of care and demographic and clinical factors were recorded, and the actual discharge locations were categorized as home or non-home. Patients discharged home but with unintended hospital visits within 2 months were also investigated. Of the 891 patients referred to the palliative care consultation team, 210 (23.6%) preferred to be discharged home. Among them, 113 (53.8%) were discharged home. No significant differences were found between patients who preferred home discharge and those who did not. Home discharge was higher among female patients (p = 0.04) and lower in those with poor oral intake (p < 0.001) or dyspnea (p = 0.02). Of the 113 patients discharged home, 37 (32.8%) had unintended hospital visits within 2 months. Approximately one-quarter of hospitalized patients with advanced cancer preferred to be discharged home, but only half of them received the home discharge. Since December 2019, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has infected people worldwide. Owing to its rapid spread, elective surgeries, including spine surgery, have been re-scheduled. We analyzed nationwide data to investigate changes in the volume of spine surgery during the first two years of the pandemic. Nationwide data from January 2016 to December 2021 were obtained. We compared the total number of patients who underwent spine surgery and related medical expenses before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. In February and September, the number of patients was significantly smaller compared to January and August, respectively. Despite the pandemic, the proportion of patients undergoing spine surgery for degenerative diseases in 2021 was the highest. In contrast, the proportions of patients undergoing spine surgery for tumors showed a continuous decrease from 2019 to 2021. Although the number of spine surgeries performed at tertiary hospitals was lowest in 2020, it was not significantly smaller than that in 2019.The number of patients who underwent spine surgery in March 2020, during the first outbreak, decreased compared to the previous month, which differed from the trend observed in the pre-COVID-19 period. Cudrania tricuspidata is a traditional medicinal herb in East Asia. The compounds of plants vary depending on environmental factors, such as soil, temperature, drainage, and so on. However, few to no studies have been done on the correlation among environment, growth, and compounds in C. tricuspidata. Thus, we aimed to investigate their relationship. Samples of C. tricuspidata fruit and cultivation soil were collected from 28 cultivation sites in October 2021. Six growth characteristics, eleven soil physicochemical properties, seven meteorological data points, and three active compounds were investigated in this study. We developed and validated an optimized method for quantifying active compounds using UPLC and performed correlation analysis of the environment, growth characteristics, and active compounds. The UPLC-UV method for determining active compounds was validated by measuring the linearity, LOD, LOQ, precision, and accuracy using UPLC. The LOD and LOQ were 0.01–0.03 µg/mL and 0.04–0.09 µg/mL, respectively. The precision was acceptable with RSD% values less than 2%. The recoveries ranged from 97.25 to 104.98% with RSD values <2%, within the acceptable limits. The active compounds were negatively correlated with the size of the fruit, and the growth characteristics were negatively correlated with some environmental factors. This study aims to introduce the distance learning class model for a foreign language in university-level education context, and to prove that this class model is effective in cultivating the motivation and interest of university students for learning a foreign language. This distance learning lesson consists of two parts: Online chatting session, BBS session. The data for this research were collected from the university students who participated in this program during the spring semester, 2012. The participants of this program are the university students who learn English as a Foreign Language in Korea and Japan. The results from the students' responses through the questionnaire prove that this distance learning class is very effective in cultivating the learner's motivation and interest for learning a foreign language and understanding the cultural differences between two countries. The authors describe the development and psychometric properties of the Korean Mood State Inventory (KMSI), which is designed to measure the mood states of Korean college students. Factor structure, concurrent validity, and internal consistency of the KMSI scores are reported. Implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research are discussed. (Contains 1 table.)

To examine HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes, related behaviors, and sources of HIV/AIDS information among high school-aged students in South Korea. One thousand and seventy-seven students (586 females and 491 males) from 5 high schools from 5 representative school districts participated in the survey. A self-administered questionnaire measuring knowledge (19 true-false items), attitudes (4 items, 5-point Likert-type scale), sources of information (6 items, yes/no), and sexual behaviors (8 items, yes/no) was utilized. The level of HIV/AIDS knowledge among Korean adolescents was moderate, with the mean scores of 13.93 out of 19 for males and 13.35 for females (p less than 0.01). Attitudes toward persons with HIV/AIDS were negative, with the mean scores of 3.06 for males and 3.09 for females. Of 42 respondents (4.4%) who had engaged in sexual intercourse, 18 (40%) had used condoms. Almost half of the total respondents reported they were not concerned about HIV/AIDS (46.0%), and 94.4% indicated the need for receiving HIV prevention education in the future. The respondents identified TV (52.5%) and school classes (32.1%) as the two major sources of information on HIV/AIDS. Only a few pointed to their parents (1.3%) as a source of information. This preliminary study summarizes the current status of prevention education on HIV/AIDS available in Korea and can provide implications for developing more differentiated intervention strategies specific to culture, age, and gender.

A large number of previous studies have used self-construal to predict communication outcomes. Recent evidence, however, suggests that validity problems may exist in self-construal measurement. The current study conducted a multimethod multitrait (Campbell & Fiske, 1959) validation study of self-construal measures with data (total N = 578) collected in Korea (N = 200), Japan (N = 212), and the U.S. (N = 166). The data showed that the Singelis (1994) Self-Construal Scale, the Cross, Bacon, and Morris (2000) Relational Interdependent Self-Construal Scale (RISC), and the Kuhn and McPartland (1954) Twenty Statements Test (TST) lacked convergent and discriminant validity, both pan-culturally and within each of the three countries included in the study. Scores on the TST were not significantly related to scores on the self-construal scales, and the various self-construal measures correlated more highly with measures of communication directness than with alternative measures of the same type of self-construal. Substantial method effects were also observed. The results were tested for both 2- and 3-dimensional models of self-construal and for refined scales and scales with all items retained. The results of all analyses were inconsistent with the claim that self-construal measures are construct valid.

The purpose of this study was to examine what, if anything, caregivers and teachers of 3- to 5-year-old children from the U.S. (n = 412), China (n = 244), Taiwan (n = 222), Korea (n = 574), and Turkey (n = 214), had in common in terms of self-reported beliefs and self-reported practices related to the National Association for the Education of Young Children's (NAEYC) policy statement for developmentally appropriate practices (DAP). DAP is widely endorsed by early childhood education and care professionals in the U.S. and is assumed to have far reaching impact on curricular beliefs and practices throughout the world. Pearson correlations and one-way ANOVA were used to compare overall mean scores for beliefs measured by the Teachers Beliefs Scale (TBS) to those of practices measured by the Instructional Activities Scale (IAS) [Charlesworth, R., Hart, C. H., Burts, D. C., & Hernandez, S. (1991). Kindergarten teachers' beliefs and practices. "Early Child Development and Care," 70, 17-35]. Item-by-item analyses were conducted using factor analysis and x[squared] analyses within and across countries. Similarities emerged related to, in particular, those beliefs and teaching practices associated with integrating across the curriculum, promoting social/emotional development, providing concrete/hands-on materials, and allowing play/choice in the curriculum.

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) Cloud computing as the next stage of internet evolution provides all the computing resources as services over the Internet. In the SaaS cloud computing research area, there are many studies from the user's point of view, but there is relatively little research on the supplier's success strategy. The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the factors that determine the market competitiveness necessary for SaaS cloud computing providers to survive in the mid to long term. We presented application dimension and technology maturity as SaaS idiosyncratic factors and show how these factors influence the business performance of SaaS providers through a differentiation strategy and low-cost strategy. Using a multivariate latent growth curve model, this study analyzed 199 strategic business units of SaaS cloud computing providers in Korea for three years. Our results find that SaaS cloud computing idiosyncratic factors did not significantly enhance the software providers' business performance in the early stage. However, they significantly affected the growth rate of their customer base and financial performance as the SaaS technology became mature over time. In addition, this study identifies a set of business, strategic, and technical considerations to guide the practitioners' decision-making process for selecting an appropriate SaaS cloud computing model. This study examines the participation and interaction of relevant individuals in the process of developing an accounting standard for South Korea's emission trading scheme (ETS). Despite the enormous accounting implications of such schemes, there is a paucity of research on the development and application of ETS accounting. Ulrich Beck's and Anthony Giddens's risk society framework is utilised to scrutinise the process of setting accounting standards—from the agenda-setting stage all the way to the final publication of the standard. In this case study, we take an interpretive approach in analysing the rich data collected through face-to-face interviews with prominent standard-setters, accounting experts and representatives of industry and government. Participant observation and relevant documents were also considered. The findings highlight the political nature of accounting standard-setting and identify the risks and responsibilities of the key agents in the process along with the means of sub-political action taken to influence decisions. We reveal that the agents involved in standard-setting attempted to balance their anthropocentric priorities with ecocentric responsibilities and prioritised the production of a standard with minimal impact on economic, reputational, and operational risk. Having authority as a standard-setter, referring frequently to precedents and, perhaps most importantly, engaging actively with the stakeholders throughout the process seem to have contributed to a widely accepted standard, which can serve as a benchmark for future attempts to factor in ETSs. The need of palliative care at the end-of-life in the emergency departments (ED) is growing. The study aims to investigate the epidemiology of patients who died during care in ED using nationwide database, and to estimate the need for palliative care in the ED. A retrospective observational study was conducted using the National Emergency Department Information System (NEDIS) database. Patients who died during ED care between 2016 and 2019 were included. Palliative care-eligible disease was defined as cancer (C00–C99 of ICD-10), chronic respiratory disease (CRD, J44–J46), chronic liver disease (CLD, K70–K77), and heart failure (HF, I50). Among the 36,538,486 ED visits during 4 years, 34,086 ED deaths were included. The crude incidence rate of ED deaths per 100,000 person-year was steady between 16.6 in 2016 and 16.3 in 2019 (p-for-trend = 0.067). Only 3370 (9.9%) ED deaths were injury, while 30,716 (90.1%) deaths were related to diseases. The most common ED diagnosis was cardiac arrest (22.1%), followed by pneumonia (8.6%) and myocardial infarction (4.7%). In cases of disease-related ED deaths, about 34.0% stayed longer than 8 h in the ED (median (interquartile range): 4.5 (1.9–11.7) h) and 44.2% received cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at end-of-life time. A quarter of the disease-related ED deaths were diagnosed with palliative care eligible disease: cancer (16.9%), CLD (3.8%), HF (3.5%), and CRD (1.4%). Cancer patients received less CPR (23.4%) and stayed longer in the ED (median (interquartile range): 7.3 (3.2–15.9) h). Over the past 4 years, more than 30,000 patients, including 5200 cancer patients, died during care in the ED. A quarter of disease-related ED death were patients with palliative care-eligible condition and more than 30% of them stayed longer than 8 h in the ED before death. Objectives: Area‐level socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with the incidence of out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA); however, the effects of individual‐level SES on OHCA occurrence are unknown. This study investigated whether individual‐level SES is associated with the occurrence of OHCA. Methods: This case–control study used data from the nationwide OHCA registry and the National Health Information Database (NHID) in Korea. All adult patients with OHCA of a medical etiology from 2013 to 2018 were included. Four controls were matched to each OHCA patient based on age and sex. The exposure was individual‐level SES measured by insurance type and premium, which is based on income in Korea. National Health Insurance (NHI) beneficiaries were divided into four groups (Q1–Q4), and medical aid beneficiaries were separately classified as the lowest SES group. The adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the outcomes were calculated. Stratified analyses were conducted according to age and sex. Results: A total of 105,443 cases were matched with 421,772 controls. OHCA occurred more frequently in the lower SES groups. Compared with the highest SES group (Q1), the aORs for OHCA occurrence increased as the SES decreased (aORs [95% CI] were 1.21 [1.19–1.24] for Q2, 1.33 [1.31–1.36] for Q3, 1.32 [1.30–1.35] for Q4, and 2.08 [2.02–2.13] for medical aid). Disparity by individual‐level SES appeared to be greater in males than in females and greater in the young and middle‐aged adults than in older adults. Conclusions: Low individual‐level SES was associated with a higher probability of OHCA occurrence. Efforts are needed to reduce SES disparities in the occurrence of OHCA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Self-care behavior plays a pivotal role in the management of chronic kidney disease. Improved self-care behavior in patients with chronic kidney disease is a key factor in health management and treatment adherence. This study aimed to evaluate the participants' general and medical condition-related characteristics, physiological indices and the level of health literacy affecting self-care behavior in patients with chronic kidney disease in South Korea. The data of 278 participants were analyzed using t-test, analysis of variance, correlation coefficient, and linear multiple regression analysis. There were significant differences in self-care behavior scores depending on participants' age and cohabitation status, employment, and smoking status as well as having dialysis due to end-stage kidney disease; number of comorbidities; levels of serum hemoglobin, calcium, and creatinine; and estimated glomerular filtration rate. The results of regression analysis revealed that not currently working, non-smoker, end-stage kidney disease, and positive response to the "actively managing my health" scale of the Health Literacy Questionnaire significantly affected self-care behavior in patients with chronic kidney disease, and the explanatory power of the model was 32.7%. Therefore, it is necessary to identify each patient's barriers or needs according to individual characteristics, such as age, cohabitation and employment status, and daily life circumstances, including smoking habits, comorbidities, social support, and level of health literacy to develop efficient support strategies for promoting adequate self-care behavior with CKD. A prediction model was developed for the wildfire fuel load of Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) stands with susceptibility to forest fire based on the forest-growth model. Furthermore, a time-series analysis was performed on the variation in forest-fire fuel load according to forest management. National Forest Inventory stand data of 1434 plots for P. densiflora stands were used, and the final forest-fire fuel load prediction model was developed using the Weibull function and mortality model. The fit index of the diameter distribution model ranged from 0.58 (0th percentile) to 0.96 (50th percentile), and that of the mortality model was 0.68. The prediction of the stand growth variation after 20 years based on the growth data of managed and unmanaged stands indicated a mean stand density of 1518 trees per ha for unmanaged stands, and 885 trees per ha for managed stands. Regarding the variation in the available canopy fuel load distribution, the predicted annual increase was approximately 0.7 ton/ha for unmanaged stands and approximately 0.5 ton/ha for managed stands. These findings will contribute to setting fuel management criteria to prevent forest fire spread while providing the quantitative data of the characteristics of stand growth variation and the predicted wildfire fuel load. Parents often have concerns regarding anorexia in their children and visiting medical institutions for the intervention of it. This study aimed to investigate the clinical practice patterns of Korean medicine doctors (KMDs) for anorexia in children using a web-based survey. A link to the questionnaire was sent via email to all KMDs that were affiliated with the Association of Korean Medicine. The questionnaire covered items on the sociodemographic characteristics and clinical characteristics related to Korean medicine (KM), such as diagnosis, treatment, awareness, safety, and effectiveness. Of 23,910 KMDs, 384 agreed to participate and complete the questionnaire. Anorexia in children was diagnosed mainly by clinical features (36.4%) and the pattern identification (PI) theory of 'Qi, Blood, Fluid, Humor, and Organ system diagnoses' (32.8%). The most frequently used PIs was 'spleen-stomach qi deficiency' (38.6%), which was followed by 'spleen failure in transportation' (23.3%), 'stomach yin deficiency' (15.5%), and 'liver depression' (14.2%). Herbal medicine (38.1%) was the primary KM treatment for anorexia, and the names of the most frequently prescribed herbal decoctions were Sogunjung-tang (16.5%), Hyangsayukgunja-tang (15.9%), and Bojungikgi-tang (13.9%). This study provides information on the existing clinical practice patterns of KMDs for anorexia in children. Based on this survey, the clinical practice guidelines will be developed. Background: The involvement of resection margins after rectal cancer surgery by malignant tumors is a negative prognostic factor. Therefore, it is important to analyze treatment outcomes and establish adjuvant therapy. Methods: The Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service collects data from medical institutions in South Korea. We reviewed the database of this prospectively collected cohort for patients who underwent curative resection for rectal cancer. Results: Of the 5,620 patients, 113 (2.0%) were diagnosed with resection margin involvement after surgery. The resection margins of patients with mid‐rectal cancer, pathologic stage III, mucinous/signet ring cell carcinoma, and undergoing emergency surgery were more frequently involved. Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy was a significant preventive factor for resection margin involvement (odds ratio = 0.53; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.32–0.87; p = 0.012). The OS of patients with adjuvant treatment was better than that of patients without adjuvant treatment (5‐year overall survival [OS]: 62.8% vs. 46.3%, p = 0.02). The administration of chemoradiotherapy was also significantly associated with better OS (hazard ratio = 0.36; 95% CI, 0.17–0.77; p = 0.009). Conclusion: Efforts to acquire wider resection margins are necessary for patients with mid‐rectal cancer, pathologic stage III, mucinous/signet ring cell carcinoma, and emergency surgery. Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy was a significant preventive factor for involved resection margin. Patients with resection margin involvement showed better OS after adjuvant treatment than those without adjuvant treatment. Cancers are the leading cause of death among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA); however, nationwide studies on cancer incidence are limited. We aimed to determine the trends in the incidence rates of AIDS-defining cancers (ADCs) and non-AIDS-defining cancers (NADCs) among Korean PLWHA. Data from the National Health Insurance Sharing Service from 2004 to 2017 were collected. Age- and sex-adjusted standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) for various cancer types relative to the general population were calculated. Of the 11,737 PLWHA followed-up for 65,052 person-years (PYs), 445 (ADCs, 130 and NADCs, 298) developed cancer. The incidence rate of ADCs decreased, whereas that of NADCs remained unchanged. PLWHA were at an increased risk of ADCs (SIR: 12.6, 95% CI: 10.6–15.0), including Kaposi's sarcoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and cervical cancer, and some NADCs, including anal cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer, and oropharyngeal cancer. Of the 396 patients who received antiretroviral therapy (ART), 215 with optimal adherence had lower incidence rates for ADCs and NADCs than those with non-optimal adherence. The 5-year survival rate of PLWHA with NADCs was 57.8%. Close surveillance and routine screening of cancers and improvement in ART adherence are required to improve the clinical outcomes of PLWHA. Background: High-quality end-of-life (EOL) care requires both comfort care and the maintenance of dignity. However, delivering EOL in the emergency department (ED) is often challenging. Therefore, we aimed to investigate characteristics of EOL care for dying patients in the ED. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients who died of disease in the ED at a tertiary hospital in Korea between January 2018 and December 2020. We examined medical care within the last 24 h of life and advance care planning (ACP) status. Results: Of all 222 disease-related mortalities, 140 (63.1%) were men, while 141 (63.5%) had cancer. The median age was 74 years. As for critical care, 61 (27.5%) patients received cardiopulmonary resuscitation, while 80 (36.0%) received mechanical ventilation. The absence of serious illness (p = 0.011) and the lack of an advance statement (p < 0.001) were both independently associated with the receipt of more critical care. Only 70 (31.5%) patients received comfort care through opioids. Younger patients (< 75 years) (p = 0.002) and those who completed life-sustaining treatment legal forms (p = 0.001) received more comfort care. While EOL discussions were initiated in 150 (67.6%) cases, the palliative care team was involved only in 29 (13.1%). Conclusions: Patients in the ED underwent more aggressive care and less comfort care in a state of imminent death. Background and Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has emerged as a major threat to nurses' health. This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting nurses' health promotion behaviors during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Material and Methods: The participants were clinical nurses who had direct contact with patients at a university hospital in G province, Korea. Data were collected from March 16 to April 16, 2021, and the final analysis included data from 162 nurses. The general and lifestyle characteristics of the participants were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the effect on health promotion behavior was analyzed using multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 21.0. Results: The results showed that the factors influencing nurses' health promotion behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic were social support (β = 0.40, p < 0.001), self-efficacy (β = 0.27, p = 0.014), being married (β = 0.18, p = 0.018), having good health (β = 0.31, p < 0.001), and not skipping meals (β = 0.20, p = 0.001). The explanatory power of the variables was 51.4%. Therefore, health promotion programs to promote social support and self-efficacy are needed to improve nurses' health promotion behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions: These results indicate that the development of additional management strategies for health promotion among nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic is necessary. The integrity of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) remains to be delineated in patients with parkinsonism. We aimed to define the findings of the VOR using head-impulse tests (HITs) and their differential diagnostic value in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA). From December 2019 to January 2021, 30 patients with PD and 23 patients with MSA (17 with cerebellar-type MSA and 6 with parkinsonian-type MSA) had a video-oculographic recording of HITs at two university hospitals in South Korea. Reversed (p = 0.034) and perverted (p = 0.015) catch-up saccades were more frequently observed in MSA than in PD during HITs. The gain difference between the ACs and the PCs were larger in MSA than in PD (p = 0.031), and positively correlated with the disease duration in patients with MSA (Spearman's coefficient = 0.512, p = 0.012). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that reversed (p = 0.044) and perverted (p = 0.039) catch-up saccades were more frequently associated with MSA than with PD during HITs. Why did Korea integrate multiple health insurers into a single insurance body in 2000? This study argues that the combination of institutional frictions and reinterpretations of them led to institutional changes by reshaping coalitions of healthcare policies. This study demonstrates how the interaction between institutional mismatches and policy feedbacks caused by policy transfer distortions and actors' ideas can trigger the institutional changes. When Korean policymakers adopted the Japanese health insurance system in the 1970s and 1980s, they deliberately modify some institutional sub-components to reflect the interests of bureaucrats and dominant groups. As a result, the mismatched institutional and ideational patterns created frictions for institutional changes. The self-governance of health insurance societies has hardly been achieved in Korea and it reduced individual health insurance societies to no more than a governmental body that collected contributions. In problem-solving mechanisms, there was a weak commitment for support such as loosely institutionalized finance assistance for rural health insurance schemes since the nascent democratic regime wanted to manipulate the subsidy for political reason, with low financial burden. Due to these distorted institutional practices, the health insurance system was seen as a symbol of the social exclusion of the disadvantaged and as a malfunctioning social policy stemming from an irresponsible government. Meanwhile, by reshaping its orientations and preferences, Korean labor reinterpreted the meaning of the health insurance system and socially oriented labor movements in Korea have formed a coalition with civil movement for the health insurance reform. To investigate the molecular characteristics of human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) detected in Gyeonggi Province from 2015/16 to 2017/18, 2331 specimens from patients with sporadic acute respiratory illness and 85 specimens from four HRSV outbreaks in the postpartum care center were analyzed by real‐time reverse transcription PCR. HRSVs were detected in 97 of the 2416 (4.0%) specimens, and among the positive specimens, 38 (39.2%) were identified as HRSV‐A and 59 (60.8%) as HRSV‐B. During the study periods, HRSV‐B predominated in all seasons, except in 2016/17 during which HRSV‐A predominated. Depending on the age groups, HRSV prevalence was the highest in 0‐ to 2‐year‐old patients. Comparison of noninfected subjects with HRSV‐infected subjects revealed that HRSV infection more frequently resulted in fever, nasal obstruction, and wheezing, although the frequency of sore throat was low; however, comparison of the symptoms between HRSV‐A‐ and HRSV‐B‐infected patients revealed no significant differences in symptoms. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all HRSV‐A patients had an ON1 genotype, and all HRSV‐B patients had an BA9 genotype. These results provide a valuable reference regarding the circulating pattern and molecular characterization of HRSV. Continuous monitoring will be essential to detect newly emerging HRSV genotypes. It is inevitable for cancer patients to visit the emergency department (ED) for symptoms of cancer itself and various treatment-related complications. As the prevalence of cancer increases along with cancer survival rates, the number of ED visits of cancer patients may increase. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiologic trends and characteristics of cancer-related ED visits. A cross-sectional study was conducted for all ED visits nationwide between 2015 and 2019. The characteristics of cancer- and non-cancer-related ED visits were compared, and the cancer type and primary reason for ED visits were investigated for cancer-related ED visits. The age- and sex-standardized incidence rate per 100,000 population was calculated. Among 44,983,523 ED visits for 5 years, 1,372,119 (3.1%) were cancer-related. Among cancer-related ED visits, 54.8% led to hospitalization including 5.1% in ICU, and 9.5% died in the hospital. The age- and sex-standardized incidence rates of cancer-related ED visits per 100,000 population increased from 521.8 in 2015 to 642.2 in 2019 (p-for-trends, < 0.01), and rates of cancer-related hospital admission via ED were 309.0 in 2015 and 336.6 in 2019 (p-for-trends, 0.75). The most common cancer types were lung cancer (14.7%), liver cancer (13.1%), and colorectal cancer (11.5%). The most common primary reasons of cancer-related ED visits were pneumonia (3.6%), gastroenteritis (2.7%), fever (2.6%), abdominal pain (2.4%), and ileus (2.1%). Cancer-related ED visits accounted for 3.1% of all ED visits, with 1.37 million cases over five years. The incidence rate of cancer-related ED visits has increased year by year, with high hospitalization and mortality rates, and the burden of cancer-related ED visits will continue to increase as the prevalence increases. We aimed to characterize the central positional nystagmus (CPN) observed in lesions involving the inferior cerebellar peduncle (ICP). We analyzed the clinical and neurotologic findings in six patients with an isolated unilateral ICP infarction that had been diagnosed at a university hospital in South Korea from 2003 to 2019. Patients usually presented with acute vestibular syndrome in isolation (4/6, 67%). Ipsilesional spontaneous nystagmus was observed in five while supine (5/6, 83%). Four (4/6, 67%) patients showed CPN which included apogeotropic (n = 3) or geotropic (n = 1) during head turning to either side while supine, and vertical nystagmus during straight-head hanging, Dix-Hallpike maneuvers, or up-righting (n = 3). Four patients showed contraversive ocular tilt reaction or tilt of the subjective visual vertical. Bedside and video head-impulse tests were normal in all patients. CPN is a usual finding in ICP lesions, and may be ascribed to damage of the fibers running from the nodulus/uvula onto the vestibular nucleus via the ICP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic disease with a higher recurrence rate than that of other mental illnesses. Moreover, it requires continuous outpatient treatment for the patient to maintain abstinence. However, with a low probability of these patients to continue outpatient treatment, predicting and managing patients who might discontinue treatment becomes necessary. Accordingly, we developed a machine learning (ML) algorithm to predict which the risk of patients dropping out of outpatient treatment schemes. Methods: A total of 839 patients were selected out of 2,206 patients admitted for AUD in three hospitals under the Catholic Central Medical Center in Korea. We implemented six ML models—logistic regression, support vector machine, k-nearest neighbor, random forest, neural network, and AdaBoost—and compared the prediction performances thereof. Results: Among the six models, AdaBoost was selected as the final model for recommended use owing to its area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.72. The four variables affecting the prediction based on feature importance were the length of hospitalization, age, residential area, and diabetes. Conclusion: An ML algorithm was developed herein to predict the risk of patients with AUD in Korea discontinuing outpatient treatment. By testing and validating various machine learning models, we determined the best performing model, AdaBoost, as the final model for recommended use. Using this model, clinicians can manage patients with high risks of discontinuing treatment and establish patient-specific treatment strategies.
