Despite the likely relevance of socio-cultural context, very few studies have examined the influence of cultural values on teachers' perceptions of gifted students' leadership development. This study chose three nations representing collectivistic to individualistic contexts and compared how 478 teachers from these countries (South Korea = 176, 36.8%, Australia = 169, 35.4%, U.S. = 133, 27.8%) differed in their beliefs about the prevalence and development of gifted students' leadership talent. Differences were found between the individualistic (Australia and the U.S.) and collectivistic (South Korea) settings in their beliefs regarding which students have leadership potential; their judgments about effective leadership styles and leader qualities; their perceptions of gifted students' qualifications as future leaders; and their preferred criteria for recommending students for a leadership education program. Although unable to identify causal relationships, this study nevertheless cautiously suggests that leadership and leaders are intertwined with culturally mediated values and practices. Future studies should continue examining these differences in cross-cultural comparative contexts.

During the summers of 2022 and 2023, leaf spots suspected to be anthracnose were observed on the leaves of Rubus crataegifolius (Korean raspberry) grown in an orchard in Gimhae, South Korea. Approximately 20% of the Korean raspberry plants on the farm where the disease was discovered were confirmed to be infected. The morphological features of the fungal isolates were coincident to the descriptions of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex. Phylogenetic analyses of concatenated sequences of the ITS, ACT, CAL, CHS-1, and GAPDH genes identified the causative agent as Colletotrichum aenigma. Pathogenicity tests confirmed that this fungal species is pathogenic to R. crataegifolius. In order to formulate and implement a community-based suicide prevention program, as well as evaluate the effectiveness of these programs, it is necessary to understand the epidemiological characteristics of self-harm. Clinical data were collected from the National Emergency Department Information System (NEDIS) data panel in Korea for patients seen after self-harm episodes. Socioeconomic factors were collected from Statistics Korea. Variables representing SP provisions (SPPs) were collected from the Korea Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Increasing the number of mental health providers resulted in lower annual emergency department visit rate after self-harm (VRSH) in the entire population, as well as in both the young and elderly populations. An increase in the mental health budget led to a significant reduction in VRSHs. However, the number of suicide prevention centers did not have any significant association with the VRSH. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are beneficial bacteria for humans and animals. However, the characteristics and functions of LAB in insects remain unclear. Here, we isolated LAB from the gut of Riptortus pedestris, a pest that is a significant problem in soybean cultivation in Korea, and identified two Lactococcus lactis and one Enterococcus faecalis using matrix-associated laser desorption/ionization-time of flight and 16S rRNA analyses. All three LAB strains survived at pH 8, and L. lactis B103 and E. faecalis B105 survived at pH 9 for 24 h. In addition, these strains survived well in simulated gastric juice of humans containing pepsin and exhibited high resistance to bile salts. Two strains of L. lactis and one of E. faecalis maintained constant density (> 104 colony-forming units [CFU]/mL) at pH 2.5, but viability at pH 2.2 was strain-dependent. The three LAB were reinoculated into second-instar nymphs of R. pedestris and colonized well, reaching a constant density (> 105 CFU/gut) in the adult insect gut. Interestingly, feeding of these LAB increased the survival rate of insects compared to the negative control, with the largest increase seen for L. lactis B103. However, the LAB did not increase the weight or length of adult insects. These results indicate that insect-derived LAB possess the traits required for survival under gastrointestinal conditions and have beneficial effects on insect hosts. The LAB infection frequency of the wild bean bug populations was 89% (n = 18) in Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea. These LAB can be utilized as a novel probiotic in the cultivation of beneficial insects. Background: Previous studies reported that changes in weather and phases of moon are associated with medical emergencies and injuries. However, such studies were limited to hospital or community level without explaining the combined effects of weather and moon phases. We investigated whether changes in weather and moon phases affected emergency department (ED) visits due to fall injuries (FIs) based on nationwide emergency patient registry data. Methods: Nationwide daily data of ED visits after FI were collected from 11 provinces (7 metropolitan cities and 4 rural provinces) in Korea between January 2014 and December 2018. The daily number of FIs was standardized into FI per million population (FPP) in each province. A multivariate regression analysis was conducted to elucidate the relationship between weather factors and moon phases with respect to daily FPP in each province. The correlation between weather factors and FI severity was also analyzed. Results: The study analyzed 666,912 patients (418,135 in metropolitan and 248,777 in rural areas) who visited EDs on weekdays. No regional difference was found in age or gender distribution between the two areas. Precipitation, minimum temperature and wind speed showed a significant association with FI in metropolitan areas. In addition, sunshine duration was also substantial risk factors for FI in rural areas. The incidence of FIs was increased on full moon days than on other days in rural areas. Injury severity was associated with weather factors such as minimum temperature, wind speed, and cloud cover. Conclusion: Weather changes such as precipitation, minimum temperature, and wind speed are associated with FI in metropolitan and rural areas. Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) causes clinical diseases and mortality in a wide variety of salmonid species. Here, we studied transcriptional responses in rainbow trout infected by the IHNV-Nagano strain isolated in Korea. RNA-seq-based transcriptome analysis of head kidney tissues cataloged differentially expressed genes. Enrichment analysis of gene ontology annotations was performed, and a total of fifteen biological process terms were commonly identified at all time points. In the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis, pathogen recognition receptor (PRR) signaling pathways such as the retinoic-acid-inducible gene-I-like receptor signaling pathway and the Toll-like receptor signaling pathway were identified at all time points. The nucleotide-binding oligomerization-domain-like receptor signaling pathway and cytosolic DNA-sensing pathway were identified at days 1 and 3. Protein-protein interaction network and centrality analyses revealed that the immune system, signaling molecules, and interaction pathways were upregulated at days 1 and 3, with the highest centrality of tumor necrosis factor. Cancer, cellular community, and endocrine system pathways were downregulated, with the highest centrality of fibronectin 1 at day 5. STAT1 was upregulated from days 1 to 5 with a high centrality. The reproducibility and repeatability of the transcriptome analysis were validated by RT-qPCR. IHNV-Nagano infection dynamically changed the transcriptome profiles in the head kidney of rainbow trout and induced a defense mechanism by regulating the immune and inflammatory pathways through PRR signaling at an early stage. Downregulated pathways involved in extracellular matrix formation and focal adhesion at day 5 indicated the possible failure of wound healing, which is important in the pathogenesis of IHNV infection. Moving object detection (MOD) technology was combined to include detection, tracking and classification which provides information such as the local and global position estimation and velocity from around objects in real time at least 15 fps. To operate an autonomous driving vehicle on real roads, a multi-sensor-based object detection and classification module should carry out simultaneously processing in the autonomous system for safe driving. Additionally, the object detection results must have high-speed processing performance in a limited HW platform for autonomous vehicles. To solve this problem, we used the Redmon in DARKNET-based (https://pjreddie.com/darknet/yolo) deep learning method to modify a detector that obtains the local position estimation in real time. The aim of this study was to get the local position information of a moving object by fusing the information from multi-cameras and one RADAR. Thus, we made a fusion server to synchronize and converse the information of multi-objects from multi-sensors on our autonomous vehicle. In this paper, we introduce a method to solve the local position estimation that recognizes the around view which includes the long-, middle- and short-range view. We also describe a method to solve the problem caused by a steep slope and a curving road condition while driving. Sweet crab apple (Malus coronaria) is a popular ornamental tree planted in gardens and urban forests in South Korea. In 2018, severe symptoms were observed on street plantings of sweet crab apple in Jinju, South Korea including shoot blight: shoot tips, twigs and foliage of infected trees turned brown, and dried completely. The causal agent isolated from the disease lesions was identified as Pseudomonas viridiflava based on biochemical tests, pathogenicity, and 16S rRNA and rpoD gene sequencing. On artificial inoculation, this pathogen not only caused shoot blight on sweet crab apple, but also bulb rot and leaf blight on onion. Sclerotium rolfsiiis one of the most destructive pathogens and thought to affect a broad range of plant hosts. In July 2014, an occurrence of sclerotium rot was observed on bitter melon (Momordica charantiaL.) in Jinju, South Korea. The rot symptoms were most developed on stems and fruit near the soil line, and infected bitter melon plants withered and eventually died. White mycelial mats with numerous sclerotia were produced on diseased stems and fruit near the soil surface. Based on the morphological characteristics, pathogenicity tests, and DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene region, the causal fungus was identified asS. rolfsiiSaccardo. This is the first report of sclerotium rot caused byS. rolfsiion bitter melon in Korea. The recent occurrence of sclerotium rot on bitter melon poses a potential threat to its production in Korea. In April 2010, a severe occurrence of Stewart's wilt on Dracaena sanderiana plants was observed in greenhouses in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, with an incidence of 35-50%. Being imported plants, little was known about the pathogens associated with D. sanderiana. Symptoms included chlorosis, wilting and leaf blight on the leaf surfaces. Physiological analysis, pathogenicity tests, sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that the pathogen was the bacterium Pantoea stewartii. In the summers of 2010 and 2011, an anthracnose disease was observed on the Jatropha curcas L. grown at the research field of Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, South Korea. The symptoms included the appearance of dark brown spots on the leaf and fruit and the mummification of the fruit. The causal fungus formed grey to dark grey colony on potato dextrose agar. Conidia were single celled, ovoid or oblong, and 8-15 × 3-5 μm in size while seta was dark brown, cone-shaped and 25-46 × 2-6 μm in size. The optimum temperature for growth was approximately 30°C. On the basis of mycological characteristics, pathogenicity test and molecular identification using internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequence, the fungus was identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an anthracnose caused by C. gloeosporioides on J. curcas plant in Korea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a plant pathogen that causes crown gall disease in various hosts across kingdoms. In the present study, five regions (Wonju, Jincheon, Taean, Suncheon, and Kimhae) of South Korea were chosen to isolate A. tumefaciens strains on roses and assess their opine metabolism (agrocinopine, nopaline, and octopine) genes based on PCR amplification. These isolated strains were confirmed as Agrobacterium using morphological, biochemical, and 16S rDNA analyses; and pathogenicity tests, including the growth characteristics of the white colony appearance on ammonium sulfate glucose minimal media, enzyme activities, 16S rDNA sequence alignment, and pathogenicity on tomato (Solanumlycopersicum). Carbon utilization, biofilm formation, tumorigenicity, and motility assays were performed to demarcate opine metabolism genes. Of 87 isolates, 18 pathogenic isolates were affirmative for having opine plasmid genes. Most of these isolates showed the presence of an agrocinopine type of carbon utilization. Two isolates showed nopaline types. However, none of these isolates showed octopine metabolic genes. The objectives of the present study were to isolate and confirm virulent strains from rose crown galls grown in the different regions of Korea and characterize their physiology and opine types. Toxoflavin contamination was investigated in broken rice produced as a by-product of domestic rice processing complexes (RPCs) in 2011 in South Korea. Of the 68 RPCs investigated, toxoflavin contamination was confirmed in 12 from three provinces: Gangwon, Gyeonggi, and Gyeongsang. Isolation of toxoflavin-producing bacteria independent of toxoflavin contamination was also performed in this study. We obtained 25 toxoflavin-producing bacterial isolates from rice samples; these samples were collected from the same 12 RPCs mentioned above. All 25 toxoflavin-producing bacteria were identified as Burkholderia glumae by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Toxoflavin-producing ability differed slightly among the 25 isolates, but they all inhibited rice seed germination and induced seed rot. This is the first report of toxoflavin contamination and the toxin-producing bacterium B. glumae in broken rice produced during the rice milling process. Because toxoflavin has stable physical properties even above a boiling temperature of 100°C, it can pose a problem even if rice is cooked or processed. These results will serve as baseline data aiding comprehensive management of toxoflavin contamination during the post-harvest storage and processing of rice. • Toxoflavin contamination in rice by-products from processing complexes was first described. • Burkholderia glumae is also isolated from rice by-product samples. • There are no reports of food-poisoning toxoflavin and B. glumae. • This study will aid the comprehensive management of toxoflavin contamination in rice.
