Understanding marine bacterioplankton composition and distribution is necessary for improving predictions of ecosystem responses to environmental change. Here, we used 16S rRNA metabarcoding to investigate marine bacterioplankton diversity and identify potential pathogenic bacteria in seawater samples collected in March, May, September, and December 2013 from two sites near Jeju Island, South Korea. We identified 1343 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and observed that community diversity varied between months. Alpha- and Gamma-proteobacteria were the most abundant classes, and in all months, the predominant genera were Candidatus Pelagibacter, Leisingera, and Citromicrobium. The highest number of OTUs was observed in September, and Vibrio (7.80%), Pseudoalteromonas (6.53%), and Citromicrobium (6.16%) showed higher relative abundances or were detected only in this month. Water temperature and salinity significantly affected bacterial distribution, and these conditions, characteristic of September, were adverse for Aestuariibacter but favored Citromicrobium. Potentially pathogenic bacteria, among which Vibrio (28 OTUs) and Pseudoalteromonas (six OTUs) were the most abundant in September, were detected in 49 OTUs, and their abundances were significantly correlated with water temperature, increasing rapidly in September, the warmest month. Objective: Population‐based studies of the familial aggregation of gout are scarce, and gene/environment interactions are not well studied. This study was undertaken to evaluate the familial aggregation of gout as well as assess interactions between family history and obesity or alcohol consumption on the development of gout. Methods: Using the Korean National Health Insurance database, which includes information regarding familial relationships and risk factor data, we identified 5,524,403 individuals from 2002 to 2018. Familial risk was calculated using hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) to compare the risk in individuals with and those without affected first‐degree relatives. Interactions between family history and obesity/alcohol consumption were assessed on an additive scale using the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI). Results: Individuals with a gout‐affected first‐degree relative had a 2.42‐fold (95% CI 2.39, 2.46) increased risk of disease compared to those with unaffected first‐degree relatives. Having both a family history of gout and being either overweight or having moderate alcohol consumption was associated with a markedly increased risk of disease, with HRs of 4.39 (95% CI 4.29, 4.49) and 2.28 (95% CI 2.22, 2.35), respectively, which exceeded the sum of their individual risks but was only statistically significant in overweight individuals (RERI 0.96 [95% CI 0.85, 1.06]). Obese individuals (RERI 1.88 [95% CI 1.61, 2.16]) and heavy drinkers (RERI 0.36 [95% CI 0.20, 0.52]) had a more prominent interaction compared to overweight individuals and moderate drinkers, suggesting a dose‐response interaction pattern. A regional water supply system in Jeju Island, South Korea, comprising 23 wellfields with 5 to 10 groundwater extraction wells (20–100 m spacing), provides water to the residents of the island. Regular large-scale groundwater pumping and excessive extraction in these wellfields have resulted in a decrease in groundwater levels. Using a numerical model, we aimed to assess the effect of large-scale groundwater extraction at four wellfields in Namwon, located in the southeastern part of the island. The numerical model estimated an approximately 0.16–0.21 m decline in water levels, which is consistent with field observations. Minor declines are inherently influenced by the regional hydrogeological setting of the study area, which involves high precipitation rates and a groundwater flow system that facilitates rapid groundwater replenishment. However, the model also shows that the decrease in groundwater levels is expected to intensify to 0.20–0.77 m in cases of extreme drought periods and increasing rates of groundwater pumping. In addition, this study suggests that sufficient well and wellfield separation distances should be considered to prevent well interference effects in areas, such as the western part of the island, with increased decline in water levels due to groundwater extraction. Background: This study investigated the association between the use of statins, the incidence of gastric, colorectal, and esophageal cancers, and mortality between January 2005 and June 2013 in South Korea. Methods: We compared patients aged 45–70 years statin users for at least 6 months to non-statin users matched by age and sex, from 2004 to June 2013 using the National Health Insurance database. Main outcomes were gastric, colorectal, and esophageal cancer incidence and mortality. Cox proportional hazard regression was used to calculate the adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) among overall cohort and matched cohort after propensity score matching with a 1:1 ratio. Results: Out of 1,008,101 people, 20,473 incident cancers, 3938 cancer deaths occurred and 7669 incident cancer, 1438 cancer death in matched cohort. The aHRs for the association between the risk of cancers and statin use were 0.7 (95% CI 0.65–0.74) for gastric cancer, 0.73 (95% CI 0.69–0.78) for colorectal cancer, and 0.55 (95% CI 0.43–0.71) for esophageal cancer. There were associations between statin use and decreased gastric cancer mortality (HR 0.46, 95% CI 0.52–0.57), colorectal cancer mortality (HR 0.43, 95% CI 0.36–0.51), and esophageal cancer mortality (HR 0.41, 95% CI 0.27–0.50) in the overall cohort and this pattern was similar in the matched cohort. Discussion: Statin use for at least 6 months was significantly associated with a lower risk of stomach, colorectal, and esophageal cancer incidence as well as cancer mortality after a diagnosis. The taxonomy of the extant dinoflagellate genus Gonyaulax is challenging since its thecate morphology is rather conservative. In contrast, cysts of Gonyaulax are varied in morphology and have been related with the fossil‐based genera Spiniferites and Impagidinium. To better understand the systematics of Gonyaulax species, we performed germination experiments on cysts that can be identified as S. ristingensis, an unidentified Spiniferites with petaloid processes here described as Spiniferites pseudodelicatus sp. nov. and Impagidinium variaseptum from Chinese and Portuguese waters. Despite marked differences in cyst morphology, motile cells of S. pseudodelicatus and I. variaseptum are indistinguishable from Gonyaulax baltica. Motile cells hatched from S. ristingensis are morphologically similar to G. baltica as well but differ in the presence of one pronounced antapical spine. Three new species, Gonyaulax amoyensis (cyst equivalent S. pseudodelicatus), Gonyaulax bohaiensis (cyst equivalent I. variaseptum), and Gonyaulax portimonensis (cyst equivalent S. ristingensis), were erected. In addition, a new ribotype (B) of G. baltica was reported from South Korea and a bloom of G. baltica ribotype B is reported from New Zealand. Molecular phylogeny based on LSU and SSU rRNA gene sequences revealed that Gonyaulax species with minute or short antapical spines formed a well‐resolved clade, whereas species with two pronounced antapical spines or lack of antapical spines formed the sister clade. Six strains of four above species were examined for yessotoxin production by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry, and very low concentrations of yessotoxin were detected for one G. bohaiensis strain. Previous studies have reported inconsistent findings concerning the impact of statin use on cancer prevention. Our study examined the association between statin use and cancer incidence and mortality related to breast and gynecologic cancers in South Korea. A population‐based cohort study was conducted using the National Health Insurance claims database. Women aged 45 to 70 years old who had taken statins for at least 6 months were compared to statin non‐users of the same age from January 2005 to June 2013. The primary outcomes were cancer incidence and mortality related to breast cancer, total gynecologic cancers, cervix uteri cancer and ovarian cancer. Cox proportional hazards regression was conducted to calculate the adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Out of 587 705 women, there were 3591 cases of breast cancer, 2239 cases of gynecologic cancers and 565 breast and total gynecologic cancer deaths during 7.6 person‐years. The aHRs for the association between the risk of each cancer and statin use were 0.88 (95% CI 0.79‐0.97) for breast cancer and 0.83 (95% CI 0.67‐0.99) for cervix uteri cancer. Statin use was associated with decreased breast cancer mortality (HR = 0.65, 95% CI 0.43‐0.99) and total gynecologic cancer mortality (HR = 0.70, 95% CI 0.50‐0.98). A dose‐response relationship was only found for all‐cancer mortality. Statin use for at least 6 months was significantly associated with a lower risk of breast and cervix uteri cancer incidence, and with lower mortality of breast and gynecologic cancers. Further research on these associations will be needed. What's new? Previous observational studies have suggested that statin users have lower rates of cancer incidence and better survival, but the results are mixed. In this population‐based cohort study, pre‐diagnosis statin use was found to be associated with a lower incidence of breast and cervix uteri cancer compared to the general population. Statin use after cancer diagnosis was associated with reduced mortality caused by breast cancer and all gynecological cancers. Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in recent years. The intake of polyphenol rich diets has been associated with improved cardiovascular function and reduced cardiovascular risks. Oryza sativa L. is one of the most common cereals worldwide. Rice bran, a byproduct of the rice milling process, contains many bioactive ingredients, including polyphenols, polysaccharides, proteins, and micronutrients. It is also consumed as a healthy diet in the form of rice bran oil and powder in many Asian countries like Japan, South Korea, and India for its several health benefits as a natural antioxidant. Thus, this study evaluated the vasorelaxant effect of ethanolic extracts of brown, green, red, and black rice bran and investigated its underlying vasorelaxant mechanism. Among the four rice bran extracts (RBEs) examined, the red rice bran extract (RRBE) had a strong endothelium-dependent vasorelaxant effect, which was markedly prevented by N-ω-nitro-L-arginine [endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) inhibitor], wortmannin [phosphoinositide-3 kinase (PI3K) inhibitor], and 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazole[4,3-alpha]quinoxalin-1-one (inhibitor of guanylate cyclase). Likewise, RRBE induced the phosphorylation of eNOS and Src in cultured endothelial cells, thereby stimulating NO formation. Altogether, these findings propose that RRBE induces endothelium-dependent relaxation, involving at least in part, NO-mediated signaling through the PI3K/eNOS pathway. Further, LC-PDA analysis conducted on the four RBEs also revealed that RRBE highly contained taxifolin, which is an active flavanonol that induces endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation, compared to other RBEs. Subsequently, the underlying mechanism of taxifolin was assessed through vascular reactivity studies with pharmacological inhibitors similar to that of RRBE. These findings deciphered a distinct difference in vasorelaxant effects between RRBE and the other RBEs. We also observed that RRBE induced a potent endothelium-dependent NO-mediated relaxation in coronary artery rings, which involved the Src/PI3K pathway that activates eNOS. Additionally, taxifolin exhibited, at least in part, similar vasoprotective effects of RRBE. Therefore, we propose that RRBE may serve as natural sources of functional phytochemicals that improve cardiovascular diseases associated with disturbed NO production and endothelial dysfunction. Objective: Long‐term population‐based data on change in the incidence of Behçet's disease (BD) are scarce, although a possible decline has been reported. The present study was undertaken to investigate the incidence, survival, and mortality of BD patients from 2004 to 2017 in the Republic of Korea. Methods: We analyzed a registry of rare intractable diseases and a claims database from the Health Insurance and Review Agency with information on BD patients between 2004 and 2017 using uniform diagnostic criteria. The study period was divided into 3 time periods: 2004–2006, 2007–2010, and 2011–2017. Results: The annual incidence of BD decreased from 8.15 per 100,000 in 2004 to 1.51 in 2017, an 81.5% decrease. The annual percentage change was 6.32% for female patients and 6.15% for male patients. The decrease in BD incidence was greater for women and middle‐aged people. The 3‐year survival rate of BD patients during the 2011–2017 period was lower than that of BD patients in 2004–2006 and 2007–2010, although there was no statistical difference. The standardized mortality rates increased significantly in the 2011–2017 period compared to the first 2 periods. Conclusion: BD incidence decreased from 2004 to 2017 in the Republic of Korea. This decline in incidence might be attributable to changes in environmental factors, including a reduction in the burden of infectious diseases in the past decades and improvement in oral health during childhood. The unprecedented decline in the incidence of BD in the Republic of Korea without major changes in genetic background suggests that environmental factors are very important to the development of BD. Background: The association between dyslipidemia and Achilles tendinopathy (AT) or Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) remains controversial, although some studies have examined this topic. Purpose: To evaluate the correlation of dyslipidemia and the risk of AT or ATR, and its association with body mass index (BMI), by assessing data from a nationwide population-based cohort. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: We used the National Health Insurance database, which includes the entire population of the Republic of Korea, to evaluate participants in the National Health Screening Program between January 2009 and December 2010. Participants diagnosed with AT or ATR before December 31, 2017, were selected. The variables assessed were age, sex, frequency of high-intensity exercise per week, BMI, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, and levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and fasting blood glucose. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression was used for data analysis. Results: A total of 16,830,532 participants were included. Of these, 125,814 and 31,424 participants developed AT and ATR, respectively. A higher level of LDL-C was associated with an increased risk of AT (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 1.16) and ATR (adjusted HR, 1.18). A slightly increased risk of AT was observed in participants with higher TG levels (adjusted HR, 1.03), whereas higher HDL-C level was associated with a slight risk reduction for AT (adjusted HR, 0.95). However, no significant association was observed between higher TG or HDL-C levels and ATR. In the underweight group (BMI <18.5 kg/m2), a higher LDL-C level was associated with an increased risk of AT and ATR by 37% and 116%, respectively, compared with lower LDL-C. Higher LDL-C level was associated with an increased risk of AT and ATR by 10% and 16%, respectively, in the obese group (BMI ≥25 kg/m2). Conclusion: Dyslipidemia was related to the development of AT and ATR. Background: Few small-scale studies have reported a genetic and familial predisposition in Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), however, quantified familial risk estimates from population-level data are unavailable. We aimed to estimate the incidence and familial risk of HT among first-degree relatives (FDR) according to age, sex, and family relationships. Methods: We conducted a population-based study in the general population of Korea from 2002 to 2017. Using the nationwide health insurance database, which has full population coverage and family relationship information, a cohort of 22 million individuals with blood-related FDR comprising 12 million families were followed up for a familial occurrence of HT. Age- and sex-adjusted incidence risk ratios (IRRs) were calculated in individuals with an affected FDR compared with those without an affected FDR. Results: Among 21,940,795 individuals, 234,912 had an HT-affected FDR, of whom 2425 familial cases developed HT with an incidence of 7.12/10,000 person-years. The familial risk for HT was 6.5-fold (95% confidence interval [CI]: 6.24–6.78) higher in individuals with versus without affected FDR. According to relationship, familial risks were IRR 102.71, IRR 7.80, IRR 5.54, and IRR 5.52 with an affected twin, sibling, mother, and father, respectively, and the corresponding incidence (/10,000 person-years) was 115.57, 10.66, 5.73, and 5.91. Same-sex twins had three times higher risk of developing HT than opposite-sex twins (IRR 121.01 vs. 21.46). The sex-specific familial risk was higher in males than females. The risks demonstrated age dependence, being higher in younger age groups. Conclusions: This study represents the largest population-based study of familial HT risk in Asia. We demonstrated elevated familial risk of incident HT among FDR, but with lower magnitude as those observed in previous studies. Familial risk increased with the degree of genetic relatedness among FDR indicating a prominent role of genetic factors in the familial aggregation of HT. Objective Previous studies have indicated that Behçet's disease (BD) has a genetic component, however population-level familial risk estimates are unavailable. We quantified the familial incidence and risk of BD in first-degree relatives (FDR) according to age, sex and type of family relationship. Methods Using the Korean National Health Insurance database, which has full population coverage and confirmed FDR information, we constructed a cohort of 21 940 795 individuals comprising 12 million families, which were followed for a familial occurrence of BD from 2002 to 2017. Age- and sex-adjusted incidence risk ratios for BD were calculated in individuals with affected FDR compared with those without affected FDR. Results Among the total study population, 53 687 individuals had affected FDR, of whom 284 familial cases developed BD with an incidence of 3.57/104 person-years. The familial risk (incidence) for BD was increased to 13.1-fold (2.71/104 person-years) in individuals with an affected father, 13.9-fold (3.11/104 person-years) with affected mother, 15.2-fold (4.9/104 person-years) with an affected sibling and the highest risk was 165-fold (46/104 person-years) with an affected twin. Familial risks showed age dependence, being higher in younger age groups. The sex-specific familial risk was similar in males and females. Conclusion This study provides quantified estimates of familial incidence and risk in FDR of BD patients in an entire population. Familial risks were higher within generation (sibling–sibling) vs between generations (parent–offspring). This paper examines a parallel machine scheduling problem with job splitting and setup resource constraints for makespan minimization. Jobs can be split into multiple sections, and such sections can be processed simultaneously on different machines. It is necessary to change setups between the processes of different jobs on a machine, and the number of setups that can be performed simultaneously is restricted due to limited setup operators. To solve this problem, we propose a mathematical programming model and develop iterative job splitting algorithms that improve a feasible initial solution step by step, taking into account job splitting, setup times, and setup resources. We derive a worst-case performance ratio of the algorithms and evaluate the performance of the proposed heuristics on a large number of randomly generated instances. This paper proposes and analyzes an efficient robot task sequence for a flexible assembly system that consists of multiple 3D printers, post-processing, assembly, inspection machines, and a material handling robot. The flexible assembly system, which has been built in many large cities in Korea, has been designed to fabricate customized products for start-ups or individuals. We consider cyclic scheduling of the system in which the robot repeats a certain sequence to produce identical products. We propose a robot task sequence to minimize the cycle time. The system behavior with the proposed robot task sequence is modeled with a timed event graph (TEG), and the optimality of the sequence is proved by analyzing the circuits in the TEG. Characterizing ecological relationships between viruses, bacteria and phytoplankton in the ocean is critical to understanding the ecosystem; however, these relationships are infrequently investigated together. To understand the dynamics of microbial communities and environmental factors in harmful algal blooms (HABs), we examined the environmental factors and microbial communities during Akashiwo sanguinea HABs in the Jangmok coastal waters of South Korea by metagenomics. Specific bacterial species showed complex synergistic and antagonistic relationships with the A. sanguinea bloom. The endoparasitic dinoflagellate Amoebophrya sp. 1 controlled the bloom dynamics and correlated with HAB decline. Among nucleocytoplasmic large DNA viruses (NCLDVs), two Pandoraviruses and six Phycodnaviruses were strongly and positively correlated with the HABs. Operational taxonomic units of microbial communities and environmental factors associated with A. sanguinea were visualized by network analysis: A. sanguinea–Amoebophrya sp. 1 (r =.59, time lag: 2 days) and A. sanguinea–Ectocarpus siliculosus virus 1 in Phycodnaviridae (0.50, 4 days) relationships showed close associations. The relationship between A. sanguinea and dissolved inorganic phosphorus relationship also showed a very close correlation (0.74, 0 day). Microbial communities and the environment changed dynamically during the A. sanguinea bloom, and the rapid turnover of microorganisms responded to ecological interactions. A. sanguinea bloom dramatically changes the environments by exuding dissolved carbohydrates via autotrophic processes, followed by changes in microbial communities involving host‐specific viruses, bacteria and parasitoids. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) virus is an emerging zoonotic virus in East Asia. However, SFTS virus (SFTSV) has not been reported to cause clinical infection in companion dogs to date. We report the case of a 4‐year‐old companion dog that presented with fever, vomiting, leukocytopenia and thrombocytopenia at a veterinary hospital in the Republic of Korea. It was diagnosed with SFTS, which was confirmed using real‐time reverse transcription PCR, sequencing and an indirect immunofluorescence assay, and recovered after supportive care. Further studies are required to investigate SFTSV infection in companion animals, living in close contact with humans, as well as animal‐to‐human transmission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Hyperthyroidism is associated with various cardiovascular risk factors. However, the relationship between hyperthyroidism and myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke has not been fully elucidated; only a few studies have investigated the association of hyperthyroidism with survival after MI or stroke. Methods: We included 59,021 hyperthyroid patients and a control cohort with 1,180,420 age- and sex-matched subjects from the Korean National Health Insurance database. Blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), glucose and cholesterol levels, and smoking history were obtained during National Health screening examination. We compared the incidence of MI, stroke, and survival after cardiovascular events between subjects with hyperthyroidism and the control cohort. Results: Subjects with hyperthyroidism had higher blood pressure, fasting glucose, and smoking rate, but lower cholesterol levels and a lower obesity rate compared with the control cohort. After adjusting these differences, as well as atrial fibrillation, hyperthyroidism was associated with increased risk of MI and ischemic stroke. Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for MI and ischemic stroke with hyperthyroidism was 1.16 [95% confidence interval, CI 1.03–1.30] and 1.12 [CI 1.04–1.20], respectively. In age-, sex-, and BMI-stratified analyses, an increased risk of MI and ischemic stroke remained significant in females, the older age group (≥50 years), and nonobese subjects (BMI <25 kg/m2), but not in males, the younger age group (<50 years), and obese subjects (BMI ≥25 kg/m2). The risk of hemorrhagic stroke was not different between subjects with hyperthyroidism and controls. Adjusted HRs for mortality in subjects with hyperthyroidism who developed MI, ischemic stroke, and hemorrhagic stroke were 1.11 ([CI 0.86–1.43], p = 0.44), 0.89 ([CI 0.75–1.05], p = 0.16), and 1.13 ([CI 0.88–1.47], p = 0.34), respectively. Conclusions: Hyperthyroidism is associated with increased risk of MI and ischemic stroke, independent of cardiovascular risk factors. This association is prominent in subjects with age ≥50 years, in females, and in the nonobese group. Hyperthyroidism did not significantly affect the mortality secondary to cardiovascular events. Background: Polypharmacy is an important issue in the care of older patients with cancer, as it increases the risk of unfavorable outcomes. We estimated the prevalence of polypharmacy, potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use, and drug–drug interactions (DDIs) in older patients with cancer in Korea and their associations with clinical outcomes. Subjects, Materials, and Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a prospective observational study of geriatric patients with cancer undergoing first‐line palliative chemotherapy. Eligible patients were older adults (≥70 years) with histologically diagnosed solid cancer who were candidates for first‐line palliative chemotherapy. All patients enrolled in this study received a geriatric assessment (GA) at baseline. We reviewed the daily medications taken by patients at the time of GA before starting chemotherapy. PIMs were assessed according to the 2015 Beers criteria, and DDIs were assessed by a clinical pharmacist using Lexi‐comp Drug Interactions. We evaluated the association between polypharmacy and clinical outcomes including treatment‐related toxicity, and hospitalization using logistic regression and Cox regression analyses. Results: In total, 301 patients (median age 75 years; range, 70–93) were enrolled; the most common cancer types were colorectal cancer (28.9%) and lung cancer (24.6%). Mean number of daily medications was 4.7 (±3.1; range, 0–14). The prevalence of polypharmacy (≥5 medications) was 45.2% and that of excessive polypharmacy (≥10 medications) was 8.6%. PIM use was detected in 137 (45.5%) patients. Clinically significant DDIs were detected in 92 (30.6%) patients. Polypharmacy was significantly associated with hospitalization or emergency room (ER) visits (odds ratio: 1.73 [1.18–2.55], p <.01). Neither polypharmacy nor PIM use showed association with treatment‐related toxicity. Conclusion: Polypharmacy, PIM use, and potential major DDIs were prevalent in Korean geriatric patients with cancer. Polypharmacy was associated with a higher risk of hospitalization or ER visits during the chemotherapy period. Implications for Practice: This study, which included 301 older Korean patients with cancer, highlights the increased prevalence of polypharmacy in this population planning to receive palliative chemotherapy. The prevalence of polypharmacy and excessive polypharmacy was 45.2% and 8.6%, respectively. The prescription of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) was detected in 45.5% and clinically significant drug–drug interaction in 30.6% of patients. Given the association of polypharmacy with increased hospitalization or emergency room visits, this study points to the need for increased awareness and intervention to minimize polypharmacy in the geriatric cancer population undergoing chemotherapy. Moreover, specific criteria for establishing PIMs should be adopted for the treatment of older adults with cancer. Background: Interpretation of mediastinal biopsy is often challenging even for experienced pathologists especially when a hematolymphoid neoplasm is suspected. Primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma (PMLBCL) and classic Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL) represent two major types of mature B-cell lymphomas of the mediastinum. Although PMLBCL and mediastinal CHL share many clinicopathologic characteristics, their treatment strategies and responses are remarkably different. We therefore aimed to find distinctive histologic or protein markers to better differentiate these two lesions. Methods: Search for primary mediastinal B-cell lymphomas found 52 consecutive cases from 3 university hospitals of Korea during 2005 to 2012. Among them, 32 cases that were available for additional immunohistochemistry (IHC) assessment were enrolled in this study. These cases consisted of the following: CHL (N = 13), PMLBCL (N = 16), and B-cell lymphoma unclassifiable, with features intermediate between diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and CHL (gray zone lymphoma, N = 3). Along with the clinicopathologic findings, the expression of p63, GATA3 and cyclin E was investigated by IHC in the three categorized lesions mentioned above. Results: Most clinical features overlapped between PMLBCL and CHL except for the increased disease progression and mortality found in PMLBCL. In the pathologic review, the presence of epithelioid granuloma favored a diagnosis of CHL, whereas reticulated or alveolar patterns of fibrosis were characteristic of PMLBCL. For protein markers, p63 was predominantly positive in PMLBCL (15/16) compared with CHL (2/13), which indicates that p63 is a marker of the highest diagnostic accuracy when calculated by the area under the ROC curve. GATA3 was expressed in the majority of CHL cases (10/13) compared with PMLBCL (0/16), while the expression of cyclin E was only rarely present in a minor population of PMLBCL. Conclusions: P63 expression in tumor cells, even focal expression, and no GATA3 is the most helpful feature in distinguishing PMLBCL from mediastinal CHL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the expansion of international fisheries law, fish stocks are still threatened by illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. An inevitable question arises: What can be done to better induce state compliance with international fisheries law? This article reveals a factor affecting compliance with international fisheries law that had not yet been explored in the compliance studies literature: the processes for implementing that law. It notes that one actor's implementation processes may enhance other actors' compliance with international fisheries law if the processes aim to affect others' behaviour and others conform to them. Accordingly, the purpose of this article is to identify conditions under which the implementation processes have such a socialisation effect. These conditions are explored in two case studies concerning IUU fishing: that existing between the Republic of Korea and the European Union (2013–2015) and that between the Republic of Korea and the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (2011). The case studies show that, from an institutional perspective, the design of transparent implementation processes with dialogue between the actors involved is crucial and, in terms of social context, the international leverage and reputations of the implementing actor and the targeted actor, as well as collaboration with media and civil society, are also significant factors in the processes' socialisation effect. Aim: Rotaviruses have been associated with biliary atresia. This study investigated whether the rotavirus vaccine, which was introduced to Korea in 2008, had an impact on the incidence of biliary atresia.Methods: We identified all rotavirus infections (n = 436 826) and biliary atresia cases (n = 528) diagnosed from 2006 to 2015 from insurance and health databases. The annual and seasonal incidence of biliary atresia and rotavirus infection rates in neonates and children were calculated. The difference in the risk of biliary atresia between rotavirus-infected and non-infected neonates was analysed.Results: The incidence of rotavirus infections was 20.6 versus 13.4 per 1000 cases before (2006-2008) and after (2009-2015) vaccine implementation. However, neonatal rotavirus infection rates did not decrease, with an incidence of 14.5 versus 14.8 per 1000 cases before and after vaccination. The biliary atresia incidence remained constant at 12.0 per 100 000 cases. Rotavirus infections in neonates were a risk factor for biliary atresia (odds ratio 3.14, 95% confidence interval 1.87-5.26).Conclusion: Rotavirus vaccination had no impact on the incidence of biliary atresia, possibly because the vaccination did not change the neonatal rotavirus infection rate through herd immunity. Aberrant expression of CD5 has been reported in 5–10% of diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCLs). CD5+ DLBCL had been recognized as an aggressive immunophenotypic subgroup of DLBCL in the 2008 WHO classification of haematolymphoid neoplasm; however, it was eliminated from the list of subgroups of DLBCLs in the revised 2016 classification. Nevertheless, there is much controversy regarding the clinical significance of CD5 expression, and many researchers still assert that this subgroup exhibits an extremely unfavorable prognosis with frequent treatment failure. We retrospectively investigated 405 DLBCLs recruited from three university hospitals in Korea from 1997 to 2013. The clinical profile, immunophenotype, and chromosomal structural alterations of the BCL2 and MYC genes were compared according to CD5 expression. A total of 29 cases of de novo CD5+ DLBCL were identified out of 405 in our series (7.4%). Clinicopathologic correlation was performed in all 29 CD5+ DLBCLs and 166 CD5- DLBCLs which were eligible for full clinical review and further pathologic examination. Compared with CD5- counterparts, CD5+ DLBCLs showed female preponderance, frequent bone marrow involvement, higher lactate dehydrogenase level, advanced Ann Arbor stages and poorer prognosis (all p<0.05). Pathologically, the expression of CD5 positively correlated with that of BCL2, MYC and Ki-67 (all p<0.05). Coexpression of BCL2 and MYC, which is referred to as a double-expressor, was relatively more common in CD5+ DLBCL, whereas translocation or amplification of these genes was very rare. in conclusion, the expression of CD5 is an independent poor prognostic factor of DLBCLs, and this subgroup displays unique clinicopathologic features. Although the exact mechanism remains uncertain, consistent activation of BCL2 and MYC by alternative pathways other than chromosomal translocation may contribute to the pathogenesis. Dementia is a major public health problem affecting 5.5 million people in USA. This qualitative study explored the caregiving experience of Korean American (KA) families of persons with dementia (PWD). Adult KA caregivers of PWD (n = 18) were recruited for semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis yielded four themes: challenges in finding resources, struggling with mental health issues, traveling the path of acceptance, and finding ways to survive. Due to the language barrier, most KA caregivers reported using Korean Internet for information on dementia and caregiving. Some traveled to South Korea seeking medical assistance for dementia (medical tourism). Importantly, some KA caregivers expressed suicidal thoughts and depression. Unexpectedly, familism prevented help seeking and possible relief from their difficulties. There is an urgent need to improve access to dementia care services and education for the KA community. This study was conducted to identify the effect of elastic compression stockings on hypotension in patients with intradialytic hypotension. Subjects of this study were 59 patients (29 in the experimental group, 30 in the control group). Elastic compression stockings were applied to patients in the experimental group during hemodialysis. To evaluate effects of treatment, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate, and hypotension symptom scores were measured. Results indicated the decrease in systolic blood pressure in the experimental group was less than that in the control group. Hypotension symptom scores were significantly decreased in the experimental group. Considering these results, the application of elastic compression stockings can be regarded as an effective nursing intervention to help prevent intradialytic hypotension in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Background: Transtibial (TT) or tibial inlay (TI) techniques are commonly used for posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (PCLR). However, the optimum method for PCLR after PCL injury remains debatable. Hypothesis/Purpose: The hypothesis was that TT and TI techniques would not show significant differences for all outcome measures. The purpose was to determine the biomechanical and clinical outcomes of TT and TI surgical techniques for PCLR. Study Design: Meta-analysis; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Web of Science, and SCOPUS electronic databases for articles published up until August 2016 were searched to find relevant articles comparing outcomes of TT versus TI techniques for PCLR. Data searching, extraction, analysis, and quality assessment were performed according to Cochrane Collaboration guidelines. Biomechanical outcomes and clinical outcomes of both techniques were compared. Results are presented as risk ratio (RR) for binary outcomes and weighted mean difference (WMD) for continuous outcomes with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Five biomechanical and 5 clinical studies were included. No significant biomechanical differences were found regarding posterior tibial translation (PTT) at a knee flexion angle of 90° or PTT after cyclic loading between the 2 groups. However, a stronger in situ force in the graft was detected in the TT group (WMD = 15.58; 95% CI, 0.22-30.95; I2 = 10%). Although no significant differences were found in clinical outcomes such as Lysholm knee function score, Tegner activity score, side-to-side difference, or posterior drawer test at final follow-up between the 2 groups, the TT technique tended to entail fewer perioperative complications than the TI technique (RR = 0.60; 95% CI, 0.35-1.00; I2 = 0%). Conclusion: TT and TI techniques for PCLR can both restore normal knee kinematics and improve knee function. However, the issue of which yields better improvement in stability and functional recovery of the knee remains unclear. More high-quality trials and randomized controlled trials are needed. Although PCLR via the TT technique resulted in higher graft forces, determining whether this is clinically significant will require further studies. Planktonic larval stages of bivalves are notoriously difficult to identify due to their similar morphology. To evaluate changed patterns in the presented planktonic bivalve larvae within Gomso Bay (Yellow Sea, South Korea), three sites were sampled twice a month from June to October 2015 and were analysed using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and light microscopy. Bivalve larvae revealed different patterns, and at least five bivalve taxa were only detected by the NGS. According to the NGS results, most bivalve larvae were Crassostrea gigas (37%), followed by Ruditapes philippinarum (26%), and Solen strictus (23%); Mactra chinensis and M. veneriformis accounted for <1% of the bivalve larvae. C. gigas and S. strictus were most abundant in late June, but rare in the other investigated periods, while R. philippinarum was more abundant in June and late September. Microscopic observations showed a similar trend to the NGS in terms of bivalve larvae presence, although they were difficult to identify the exact species. Long-term exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbonyl compounds in beauty products may adversely impact the health of beauty salon technicians. Previous studies have focused on assessing indoor air concentrations of chemicals, such as benzene and toluene, and not on personal exposure concentrations. This study measured the indoor and personal exposure concentrations of VOCs and carbonyl compounds in fifty-three beauty salons in Korea. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks and sensitivity were analyzed using the Monte Carlo simulation technique. The indoor and personal exposure concentrations of acetone were 82.24 µg/m3 and 104.97 µg/m3, respectively, the highest among all measured chemicals. Beauty salon technicians who experienced adverse health effects had significantly higher concentrations of acetone, benzaldehyde, and toluene than those who did not experience adverse health effects (p -value < 0.05). The average hazard quotients of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were higher than the acceptable risk level (1), and the average cancer risks of formaldehyde exceeded the acceptable risk level (10−6). Wearing personal protective equipment was the most efficient risk reduction strategy for reducing the non-cancer risks of acetaldehyde and formaldehyde and the carcinogenic risks of formaldehyde. The results of this study can be used as a basis for reducing exposure to VOCs and carbonyl compounds among salon technicians. Background: The impact of meat consumption on high blood pressure (HBP) and obesity in children and adolescents is a subject of debate. The aim of this study was thus to evaluate the association between meat consumption and both HBP and obesity in this group.Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis using nationally representative samples of children and adolescents aged 9, 12, and 15 years old (n = 136,739) who were included in the Korea School Health Examination Survey (KSHES) for the 2011-2015 period. Multiple linear and logistic regression analysis was used to determine the factors influencing systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) levels, and to test the strength of these relationships.Results: Adjusted for covariates, 6.3% of those subjects who consumed >5 servings of meat (including beef, pork, and chicken) per week were obese, compared with 9.1% of the subjects who consumed <1 serving of meat/wk (obesity adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 1.44; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.21-1.70; P ≤0.001). Those who consumed <1 serving of meat/wk had an HBP prevalence of 8.2%, compared with 7.2% for subjects who consumed >5 servings of meat/wk (systolic HBP adjusted OR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.05-1.62; P ≤0.01, diastolic HBP adjusted OR: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.02-1.54; P <0.05). Obese subjects were estimated to have a higher SBP (β = 7.497, P < 0.001) and DBP (β = 4.123, P <0.001) than subjects who had no excess weight. Compared to subjects who consumed >5 servings of meat/wk, those who consumed <3 servings of meat/wk had a higher SBP (β = 0.574, P <0.001) and DBP (β = 0.376, P = 0.003) after adjusting for BMI. The intake of milk, fruit, and vegetables was not associated with either SBP or DBP (P >0.05). In contrast, BMI was significantly associated with milk, fruits, and vegetables (P <0.01).Conclusions: Among children and adolescents, a higher level of meat consumption was associated with lower SBP, DBP, and BMI, and greater height, suggesting that consuming an appropriate amount of meat is important for healthy growth at a young age. To understand the co-variance between common free-living bacteria and Cochlodinium polykrikoides harmful algal blooms (HABs) and their metabolic functions, we investigated 110 sampling sites in the Southern Sea of South Korea. These sampling sites were divided into three groups based on environmental factors and phytoplankton data with a similarity of 85% using non-metric multidimensional scaling. One group represented high-severity C. polykrikoides blooms, while the other two represented low-severity or no blooms. In high-severity HABs, inorganic phosphorous and dissolved organic carbon concentrations were strongly correlated with C. polykrikoides density (p < 0.01). This may reflect the changes in biochemical cycling due to inorganic and organic substrates released by HAB cells (or by cell destruction). Furthermore, 88 common bacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs, with mean relative abundance > 1%) were identified. These included Gammaproteobacteria (36 OTUs), Flavobacteriia (24), Alphaproteobacteria (18), and other taxa (11). When C. polykrikoides blooms intensified, the relative abundances of Gammaproteobacteria also increased. OTU #030 (Flavicella sp., Flavobacteria, 96%) was positively correlated with C. polykrikoides abundance (r = 0.77, p < 0.001). Functional analysis based on the dominant bacterial OTUs revealed that chemoheterotrophy-related functions were more common in high-severity sites of HABs than in other groups. The purpose of this study was to characterize the microbial community in ground pork using molecular approaches. Forty six ground pork products were purchased from local stores in the north central area of South Korea. Aerobic plate counts varied 4.23 ± 5.14 × 105CFU/g with the range between 5.00 × 103and 1.85 × 106CFU/g for ground pork samples. Four ground meat samples were further processed for metagenomic analysis.Pseudomonasspecies was the most relative abundant with a wide range occurring (1.72 to 77.7%) as part of the microbial genera in ground pork. Bacteria such asCarnobacterium, Yersinia, Photobacteriumwere also identified in ground pork. Despite the prominence of certain genera across all samples there was still extensive microbial diversity among ground pork products that originated from different slaughter houses and were processed in different markets. Such diversity indicates that designing interventions to extend shelf life may be hampered by the extensive variability in the microbial consortia associated with pork products. Ethnopharmacological relevance Liriope platyphylla Wang et Tang continues to be used in Korea as a traditional medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders related to constipation and abnormal GI motility. Aim of the study Because GI disorders, especially GI motility dysfunctions, are major lifelong problems, the authors investigated the effects of a water extract of the roots of L . platyphylla Wang et Tang (LPE) on the pacemaker potentials (PPTs) of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) and on GI motility in male ICR mice. Materials and methods Enzymatic digestions were used to dissociate ICCs from small intestines, and the whole-cell patch-clamp configuration was used to record PPTs generated by cultured ICCs in vitro. In vivo effects of LPE on GI motility were investigated by measuring intestinal transit rates (ITRs) of Evans blue in normal mice and in acetic acid (AA) and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mouse models of GI motility dysfunction. Results LPE dose-dependently depolarized PPTs in ICCs. Pretreatment with methoctramine (a muscarinic M 2 receptor antagonist) did not block LPE-induced PPT depolarization. However, pretreatment with 4-DAMP (a muscarinic M 3 receptor antagonist) blocked LPE-induced PPT depolarization. In addition, treatment with LY294002 (a phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor) also blocked LPE-induced PPT depolarization. Intracellular GDP β S inhibited LPE-induced PPT depolarization, and LPE-induced PPT depolarization was found to occur in a phospholipase C (PLC)- and a protein kinase C (PKC)-dependent manner. Pretreatment with Ca 2+ free solution or thapsigargin (a Ca 2+ -ATPase inhibitor in endoplasmic reticulum) abolished PPTs, and under these conditions, LPE did not depolarize ICC PPTs. In normal mice, ITRs were significantly and dose-dependently increased by LPE (0.01–1 g/kg administered intragastrically (i.g.)). In addition, LPE (i.g.) significantly recovered GI motility dysfunctions in both animal models. Conclusion LPE dose-dependently depolarizes ICC PPTs through M 3 receptors via external and internal Ca 2+ regulation and via G protein-, PI3K-, PLC- and PKC- dependent pathways in vitro . Also, in vivo , LPE increased ITRs in treatment naïve mice and our two mouse models of GI dysfunction. Bacterioplankton communities in a semi-closed bay (Jangmok Bay, South Korea) were analysed using a 16S rDNA multiplex 454 pyrosequencing approach. Diversity and operational taxonomic units of bacterioplankton communities in the Jangmok Bay are highest in cold water seasons and lowest in warm water ones. During cold seasons, α -proteobacteria respond rapidly to pulses of the concentration of inorganic nutrients, while γ -proteobacteria during warm water seasons are the most active type of bacterioplankton resent in the prevailing conditions, which include high dissolved organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand and primary production. Cyanobacteria, a minor group constituting 4.58% of the total bacterioplankton, are more abundant at low temperature. Flavobacteria are more abundant in nutrient-rich conditions and the abundance of this group also demonstrated a delayed decline following summer phytoplankton blooms. The purpose of this study was to assess the microbial community in ground beef purchased from local stores in the north central area of South Korea. A total of 31 ground beef samples showed 3.77 ± 5.16 × 105CFU/g on aerobic plate counts, and PCR-based denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis was performed to assess the microbial community, which revealed a diverse profile among the products. Four of these samples were selected for further analyses via 454 pyrosequencing.Pseudomonaswas the most frequently identified genus in terms of relative abundance (4.54–73.8%), and other bacteria such asLactobacillus, Acinetobacter, andCarnobacteriumwere also identified in the ground beef. The presence of bacteria can affect the spoilage of ground beef products depending on the microbial populations, and understanding these populations may help limit spoilage and/or foodborne illness. South Korea's seven governmental ministries and agency jointly announced a “Master Plan for Arctic Policy” on December 10, 2013. This represents the state's first comprehensive Arctic policy document. This paper aims to analyze the Korean government's Master Plan from both the legal and policy perspectives, as well as to make constructive comments for its improvement. Environmental changes, the need for scientific research, growing economic optimism about the Arctic region, and political leadership have led South Korea to head north. These four factors form the basis for the Master Plan. This document outlines Korea's vision (to be a reliable and responsible partner in this polar region), three policy goals, four strategies, and thirty-one projects connected to the Arctic region. The formation of the Master Plan has been an opportunity for South Korea to organize and compile all the various Arctic activities independently conducted by governmental ministries and agency. In order to improve South Korea's Arctic policy since the Master Plan, the author recommends that the nation prioritize its projects according to its needs and the feasibility of each project. Prudence is required in the drafting and implementation of Arctic policy to respect Arctic states' sovereignties and sovereign rights over the Arctic areas. Finally, strengthening cooperation with the Arctic states and at Arctic forums is indispensable. Among verbal memory tests, two that are commonly used to measure the ability of verbal memory function in cognitive impairment are story recall tests and word-list learning tests. However, research is limited regarding which test might be more sensitive in discriminating between normal cognitive aging and patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the Korean population. The purpose of the current study was to compare the word-list learning test (Seoul Verbal Learning Test; SVLT) and the story recall test (Korean Story Recall Test; KSRT) to determine which test is more sensitive in discriminating between individuals with normal cognitive aging and patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early stage of AD in Korea. A total of 53 healthy adults, 127 patients with MCI, and 72 patients with early stage of AD participated in this study. The receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under the curve (AUC) were evaluated to compare these two tests. The results showed that the AUC of the SVLT was significantly larger than the AUC of the KSRT in all three groups (healthy adults vs. MCI and early stage of AD; healthy adults vs. MCI; healthy adults vs. early stage of AD). However, in comparison of patients with MCI and early stage of AD, the AUC of SVLT and the AUC of KSRT were not significant. Abstract: Aim of the study: Thuja orientalis (TO) has been a recognized herbal medicine across Northeast Asian countries for thousands of years and used for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases through as yet undefined mechanisms. In this study, we set out to determine whether the anti-inflammatory effects of this plant are mediated to suppress mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Materials and methods: RAW 264.7 cells were pretreated with the methylene chloride fraction of TO (MTO) and stimulated with LPS. Nitric oxide (NO) release was determined by the accumulation of nitrite in the culture supernatants and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and IL-6 secretion were determined by immunoenzymatic assay. Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression were evaluated via RT-PCR and Western blotting. NF-κB activation was also evaluated by reporter gene assay and electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA). In addition, the protective effect of MTO was evaluated by use of the LPS-induced endotoxin shock model in mice. Results: We found that MTO significantly suppressed LPS-stimulated NO and IL-6 production without affecting cell viability. MTO inhibited the expression of LPS-induced iNOS and COX-2 protein and their mRNA expression. Also, TNF-α and IL-6 secretion were decreased by MTO in both PMA and ionomycin-stimulated splenocytes. As a result, MTO inhibited pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6, which is hypothesized as being due to the suppression of LPS-induced p38 MAPK and NF-κB activation. Moreover, MTO improved the survival rate during lethal endotoxemia by inhibiting the production of TNF-α in an animal model and our LC–MS analysis showed that a major component of MTO was pinusolide. Conclusions: We demonstrate here the evidence that the methylene chloride fraction of Thuja orientalis (MTO) potentially inhibits the biomarkers related to inflammation in vitro and in vivo, and might be provided as a potential candidate for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Dense patches were observed in the tidal pools of the southern area of Korea. To clarify the causative organisms, the cells were collected and their morphological features were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, after establishing strains for the cells the molecular phylogeny was inferred with concatenated small subunit (SSU) and large subunit (LSU) rRNA sequences. The cells were characterized by a nucleus in the hypotheca, strong reticulations in thecal plates, the separation of plates 2a and 3a, the tear-shaped apical pore complex, an elongated rectangular 1a plate and the absence of the right sulcal list. The thecal plate formula was Po, X, 4′, 3a, 7″, 6c, 4S, 5′′′, 2′′′′. Based on these morphological features, the cells were identified as Bysmatrum subsalsum. In the culture, the spherical cysts of B. subsalsum without thecal plates were observed. Molecular phylogeny revealed two ribotypes of B. subsalsum are identified; The Korean isolates were nested within the ribotype B consisting of the isolates from China, Malaysia and the French Atlantic, whereas the ribotype A includes only the isolates from the Mediterranean Sea. In the phylogeny, B. subsalsum and B. austrafrum were grouped. This can be supported by the morphological similarity between the two species, indicating that the two species may be conspecific, however B. subsalsum may distinguish from B. austrafrum, because of differences in the types of eyespots reported in previous studies. We examined the dynamics of dinoflagellate cyst and phytoplankton assemblages in eutrophic coastal waters of Korea, adjacent to fish and shellfish farms. Water temperature showed seasonality, whereas salinity and pH remained relatively consistent. Dissolved inorganic nutrient levels were higher in September and at the inner stations, where aquaculture fish farms are located than those in May and at the outer stations. Canonical correspondence analysis and artificial neural network analysis revealed multiple environmental factors that affect the distribution of phytoplankton and dinoflagellate cysts. Diatoms dominated in the phytoplankton assemblages, while the protoperidinioid group dominated in the dinoflagellate cyst assemblages. Cyst abundance was higher at the outer stations than at the inner stations due to transport by fast currents, and phytoplankton abundance was positively correlated with cyst abundance. An increase in diatom abundance led to an increase in heterotrophic/mixotrophic cyst abundance, indicating that excessive uneaten food and urinary waste from the fish farms caused eutrophication in the study region and fast growth of diatoms, thereby contributing to the growth of heterotrophic/mixotrophic dinoflagellates and consequently, high abundance of heterotrophic/mixotrophic dinoflagellate cysts. Third party vessels have recently been challenging a 1998 ROK–Japan fisheries order by fishing in the two sides' undelimited EEZs. This article identifies the rights/powers that the ROK and Japan can exercise in relation to third party fishing before the geographical scope for the exercise of their sovereign rights is definitely established. Legal questions concerning this fishing remain unresolved in the absence of a specific provision in the ROK–Japan fisheries agreement. Thus, this article examines two legal issues arising from the DPRK's and China's squid fishing in the East Sea/Sea of Japan: (1) the ROK's and Japan's right to grant a fishing license to a third party and (2) their power to exercise law enforcement against third party fishing vessels. This article ascertains the existence of these two states' implied rights concerned under their bilateral agreement. Article 74(3) of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea is also interpreted to verify the compatibility of both states' behavior regarding third party fishing with this provision. The findings of this article are expected to provide insights not only for China, Japan and the two Koreas but also for other states with third party fishing issues in their undelimited areas. • The Korea–Japan Fisheries Agreement is silent on third party fishing. • UNCLOS applies to third party fishing issues in the undelimited area. • Korea and Japan can regulate this fishing in their EEZ-presumed zones. • Such regulation in the intermediate/provisional zone needs the other's acquiescence. • Prudence is required in law enforcement against third party fishing. Because Enterococcus faecium is an important nosocomial pathogen and sentinel organism for tracking antimicrobial resistance, information on the contamination and antimicrobial resistance patterns of E. faecium in food are essential to public health and food safety. We analyzed the occurrence of E. faecium in retail pork meat products (n = 124), and antimicrobial resistance of 30 E. faecium isolates were examined against 14 antimicrobials using the broth dilution test and disc diffusion test. Rep-PCR-based molecular diversity was also analyzed using Deviersilab. The highest contamination of enterococci was observed for minced pork meat but most of the E. faecium was isolated from meatball-type frozen pork meat products (FP). Incidences of antimicrobial-resistant E. faecium against erythromycin, clindamycin and nitrofurantoin were 80%, 50% and 20%, respectively. No vancomycin-resistant enterococci were analyzed. Rep-PCR showed distinctive clusters with a similarity ≥ 98%, consisting of 18 E. faecium isolates from FP manufactured in seven companies. The analyzed data on the contamination and antimicrobial resistance patterns combined with molecular typing can be useful to derive risk management of antimicrobial-resistant enterococci in food. This paper examines what Korea and Japan meant by the term "joint development" in their Joint Development Agreement of 1974, which is the first instrument that the two states must rely on when launching plans for joint development. This research has practical relevance because a number of activities taking place concerning the joint development since the 2000s have revealed ambiguities under the Agreement. Specifically, are two types of activities conducted by non-concessionaires since 2000s—seismic survey and re-analysis of the previously collected research data—part of "joint development" under the Agreement? If not, what rules apply to the activities not regulated by the Agreement? This paper answers these questions by arguing that the Agreement does not regulate all activities related to "joint development" between Korea and Japan, and that Article 83 (3) of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea applies to those activities not covered by the Agreement. This paper contributes to clarifying the scope of "joint development" under the Agreement and the latter's relationship to Article 83 (3) of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. • 1974 Korea-Japan Joint Development Agreement does not regulate all actions concerned. • The seismic survey by non-concessionaires is not subject to the Agreement. • This survey may be unilaterally done in the absence of the other party's objection. • Re-analysis of the extant research data is not an "exploration" under the Agreement. • The confidentiality of information should be guaranteed for re-analysis of old data. Background: Despite abundant theoretical evidence of higher rates of suicide among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youths, little is known about the relationship between suicide and types of sexual intercourse experience in youths. This study examines the association between the type of intercourse experience and suicide risk outcomes (SROs: suicidal ideation, plans for suicide, suicidal attempts) from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey.Methods: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 146,621 students aged 12-17 years for the years 2012 and 2013. We defined lesbian, gay, or bisexual youth as youths who engaged in a type of sexual intercourse (same-sex or both-sex intercourse). A chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate the association between intercourse experience and SROs.Results: The results showed that the prevalence of suicidal ideation was higher among youths with same-sex intercourse experience (45.9% for females, 33.7% for males) than among youths with opposite-sex intercourse experience (42.2% for females, 23.8% for males) and those with no experience in intercourse (21.0% for females, 12.7% for males). After adjusting for revealed risk factors that were associated with suicide risks, among males, suicide risks based on intercourse experience seemed to increase in the following order: no experience in sexual intercourse, opposite-sex, same-sex, and then both-sexes sexual intercourse experience. Same- and both-sexes intercourse related SROs are strongly linked to violence (being physically assaulted, threatened, or bullied) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV infection. Those having no sexual intercourse experience showed the least probability of suicide risks among youths.Conclusion: The SROs of youths with same-sex or both-sex intercourse experience had strong associations with gender (males), violence, and STDs. Therefore, school educators must continue to advocate for and to implement LGB inclusive policies and programs in order to promote safe and supportive learning environments where all students are protected from health risk behaviors. A foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak during 2010 affected the entire country of South Korea and approximately 3.4 million swine and bovine mortalities were disposed of at approximately 4800 on-farm burial sites for a few months following the first outbreak. Furthermore, outbreaks of avian influenza (AI) have struck Korea consistently since 2014. Public concern regarding the deterioration of the surrounding environment has been raised aiming at the enormous infected animal carcass burials. On behalf of the Ministry of Environment (ME) of the Korean government, we conducted groundwater monitoring at approximately 3000 wells around the burial sites for 7 years from 2011 to 2017. The baseline groundwater already had enriched levels of nitrogen and chloride compounds masking the influence of leachate with the pre-existing anthropogenic contamination. Based on the trend analysis, most monitoring wells had no significant trends in NO 3 -N and Cl implying that an abrupt degradation in water quality was not expected across the country. Increasing proportions of total coliform detection in the groundwater of the majority of provinces will cause potential damage to human health around the carcass burial sites. Wells showing frequent upward and downward trends near the carcass burial pits were targeted for principal component analysis (PCA) and the results showed that NH 4 -N, TOC, Cl, and K could be indicators distinguishing the sole impacts of animal leachate on the groundwater. Analyses of the nationwide monitoring data indicated possibly delayed and prolonged impacts of the widespread burials of livestock mortalities on the groundwater environment. • Ellipsoidal alexandrium cysts in jinhae-masan bay are produced by two species, alexandrium catenella (Group I) and A. pacificum (Group IV). • Cyst germination temperature is lower for alexandrium catenella (Group I) than for A. pacificum (Group IV). • Differences in cyst germination rates among sampling sites can be determined by the differences in distribution and abundance of the species. • Concentrations of ellipsoidal alexandrium cysts from surface sediments of jinhae-masan bay are higher in february than in august. • PST profiles of alexandrium catenella (Group I) and A. pacificum (Group IV) in jinhae-masan bay are dominated by GTX-3 and GTX-4. To better understand the outbreaks of paralytic shellfish poisoning and bloom dynamics caused by Alexandrium species in Jinhae-Masan Bay, Korea, the germination and distributions of ellipsoidal Alexandrium cysts were investigated, and paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) profiles and contents were determined using strains established from germling cells. The phylogeny and morphological observations revealed that the germinated vegetative cells from ellipsoidal cysts collected from the surface sediments in Jinhae-Masan Bay belong to Alexandrium catenella (Group I) and A. pacificum (Group IV) nested within A. tamarense species complex. Cyst germinations of A. catenella (Group I) were observed at only 10 °C, whereas cysts of A. pacificum (Group IV) could germinate at temperature ranges of 10 to 25 °C. Maximum germination success (85%) for isolated cysts occurred at 15 °C, and the germling cells were A. pacificum (Group IV). The results indicate that the variation in water temperature in Jinhae-Masan Bay can control the seasonal variations in germination of cysts of A. catenella (Group I) and A. pacificum (Group IV). The germination rates of ellipsoidal Alexandrium cysts were different among sampling sites in Jinhae-Masan Bay, probably because of differences in distribution and abundance of A. catenella (Group I) and A. pacificum (Group IV) in the sediments. The ellipsoidal Alexandrium cyst concentrations were much higher in February than in August, however the distributions were similar. Gonyautoxins 3 and 4 (GTX-3 and GTX-4) contributed a large proportion (>90%) of the toxins produced by strains A. catenella (Group I) and A. pacificum (Group IV) established from germling cells, and the total cellular contents were higher in A. catenella (Group I) than in A. pacificum (Group IV). Recently, a small rain radar in the 24GHz band is under development in Korea. This instrument is intended for the measurement of quantitative rainfall within a radius of 1 Km. Quantitative rainfall measurements for small watersheds are predicated on flood forecasting. The purpose of this device development was focused on the amount of rainfall reaching the ground rather than the amount of rainfall in the atmosphere. The device is currently being developed as a prototype and is undergoing various performance verification with the aim of commercialization.In this presentation, we show the comparison result of performance verification of small rain radar and show the performance superiority. In order to verify the performance of this device, it took a long time from the selection of the comparative verification site to the design and installation of a pit gauge. The comparative site was equipped with 2 parsivels, one pit gauge(composed of one weighing type of rain gauge and 12 tipping bucket type rain gauges) and 17 tipping bucket type gauges. The comparative analysis method of the measurement result converts the scanning result of this device into the reflectance and compares it with the verification device. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
