The purpose of the study was to describe and analyze the self-efficacy of South Korean adapted physical education (APE) majors in teaching persons with disabilities. The research design was a qualitative descriptive case study. The participants were five APE majors (four men and one woman, age ranged from 20 to 25) attending a university in South Korea. The data sources were interviews, program curriculum reviews, and a researcher's journal entries; and analyzed using thematic analysis. Four themes emerged, which were: (a) determinants of self-efficacy, (b) relationships with APE faculty, (c) increased awareness, and (d) I am not confident. Findings exposed APE majors as more likely to gain confidence after volunteering to work with persons with disabilities and developing relationships with them. The results showed the importance of integrating hands-on practicum teaching experiences in APE courses for the majors to develop their positive self-efficacy in teaching persons with disabilities.

The purpose of the study was to analyze South Korean college students with disabilities' recollections about their experiences in segregated (self-contained) special education classes and integrated physical education classes during elementary, middle, and/or high school in South Korea. The research design was retrospective multiple-case study. The participants were five South Korean college students matriculating at a university in South Korea. The primary data sources were semistructured interviews and researcher's journal entries. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis and exposed four interrelated themes, which were (a) isolated, (b) felt not supported, (c) segregated from peers, and (d) felt relieved and safe. Overall, the findings exposed challenges the participants all had experienced in integrated physical education classes, including feeling isolated and excluded from meaningful participation in class activities. In contrast, they reflected on their experiences in the segregated (self-contained) special education classes with a sense of belonging and acceptance.

Purpose: This study investigated changes in psychological and physiological indices in cancer survivors who participated in a forest therapy camp in Korea. Methods: A total of 37 cancer survivors (19 and 18 in the experimental and control groups, respectively) participated in this study. Over a 2-night and 3-day period, the participants in the experimental group took part in a forest therapy camp that included activities such as gymnastics, walking, five-senses experiences, and meditation. Both groups completed self-report questionnaires that measured their stress levels and profile of mood states, both before and after the forest therapy camp. Blood samples were collected to measure the levels of cortisol, serotonin, and natural killer (NK) cells. Results: After the forest therapy camp, the experimental group exhibited reduced stress levels (p = .031) and a significant improvement in total mood disturbance (p = . 047) when compared with the control group. The level of serotonin also significantly increased (p < .001). However, in contrast to the prediction, a significant increase in cortisol was noted in the experimental group relative to the control group (p = .016). Moreover, no significant difference in NK cells was noted between the two groups. Conclusion: Forest therapy can be easily applied to cancer survivors. The positive psychological effects of the forest therapy camp were confirmed by improvements in stress and mood states and the increased level of serotonin in forest therapy camp participants. Purpose: The purposes of this study were to develop a prediction model for pressure injury using a machine learning algorithm and to integrate it into clinical practice. Methods: This was a retrospective study of tertiary hospitals in Seoul, Korea. It analyzed patients in 12 departments where many pressure injuries occurred, including 8 general wards and 4 intensive care units from January 2018 to May 2022. In total, 182 variables were included in the model development. A pressure injury prediction model was developed using the gradient boosting algorithm, logistic regression, and decision tree methods, and it was compared to the Braden scale. Results: Among the 1,389,660 general ward cases, there were 451 cases of pressure injuries, and among 139,897 intensive care unit cases, there were 297 cases of pressure injuries. Among the tested prediction models, the gradient boosting algorithm showed the highest predictive performance. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the gradient boosting algorithm's pressure injury prediction model in the general ward and intensive care unit was 0.86 (95% confidence interval, 0.83~0.89) and 0.83 (95% confidence interval, 0.79~0.87), respectively. This model was integrated into the electronic health record system to show each patient's probability for pressure injury occurrence, and the risk factors calculated every hour. Conclusion: The prediction model developed using the gradient boosting algorithm exhibited higher performance than the Braden scale. A clinical decision support system that automatically assesses pressure injury risk allows nurses to focus on patients at high risk for pressure injuries without increasing their workload. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate differences in the anti-hepatitis A virus (HAV) antibody seropositivity rate by age and gender. Methods: We collected information on anti-HAV immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M status from samples submitted for HAV antibody testing in 2012-2022. A total of 1,333,615 cases were included in the analysis. Results: By age, the seropositivity rate was represented by a U-shaped curve, such that the rate was low for the group aged 20 to 39 years and higher in those who were younger or older. Over time, the curve shifted rightward, and the seropositivity rate declined gradually in the group aged 35 to 39 years and older. A gender-based difference in antibody seropositivity rate was especially noticeable in the group aged 20 to 29 years. This difference between genders widened in the participants' early 20s--when men in the Republic of Korea enlist in the military--and the divergence continued subsequently for older individuals. Conclusion: These results indicate a higher risk of severe infection among older individuals and a gender-based difference in seroprevalence. Background: This study evaluated the effects of a mobile diabetes management program called "iCareD" (College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea) which was integrated into the hospital's electronic medical records system to minimize the workload of the healthcare team in the real clinical practice setting. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we recruited 308 patients. We categorized these patients based on their compliance regarding their use of the iCareD program at home; compliance was determined through self-monitored blood glucose inputs and message subscription rates. We analyzed changes in the ABC (hemoglobin A1c, blood pressure, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol) levels from the baseline to 12 months thereafter, based on the patients' iCareD usage patterns. Results: The patients comprised 92 (30%) non-users, 170 (55%) poor-compliance users, and 46 (15%) good-compliance users; the ABC target achievement rate showed prominent changes in good-compliance groups from baseline to 12 months (10.9% vs. 23.9%, P<0.05), whereas no significant changes were observed for poor-compliance users and non-users (13.5% vs. 18.8%, P=0.106; 20.7% vs. 14.1%, P=0.201; respectively). Conclusion: Implementing the iCareD can improve the ABC levels of patients with diabetes with minimal efforts of the healthcare team in real clinical settings. Aim: To compare and contrast nurses' work values and communication styles across Generation X, Y, and Z. Background: Intergenerational differences in the work values of nurses are well known, but the commonalities remain largely uninvestigated. It is also unclear if there are intergenerational differences and commonalities in the rhetorical communication style of nurses. Methods: This study used a cross‐sectional research design. Participants were 243 nurses of Generation X (n = 78), Y (n = 86), and Z (n = 79) working at a general hospital in Korea. Structured questionnaires were used to collect the data from September to October 2019. The differences in work values and communication types were measured and analyzed using the χ2 test. Findings: The work values of Generation X differed from those of Generation Y and Z, who preferred extrinsic work values. There was no significant intergenerational difference in communication types, although Generation X and Y were similar to each other in communication types and different from Generation Z. Conclusion: Although the work values of the three generations are different, their communication styles are similar so that they may reduce the generational gap through communication. In particular, Generation Y nurses prefer extrinsic work values and share some work values with Generation Z; however, the dominant communication type of Generation Y is similar to Generation X, not Z. Therefore, Generation Y could play a key role in connecting Generation X with Z during communication. Implications for nursing policy: Nursing organizations should delegate the authority to Generation Y so that Y may have a voice in the nursing group as the mediator between X and Z. Background: There is a lack of studies about which factors affect the quality of life (QoL) in children with atopic dermatitis (AD), although it is well known that AD has considerably negative e#ects on their QoL. Objective: This study aimed to measure the QoL in children with AD and ident(& thefactors that affect their QoL. Methods: A questionnaire derived from the Children 's Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI) was used to measure QoL. Family histog, allergic comorbidities, exacerbation-related factors, time of exacerbation, and previous and current treatment were also evaluated. The total immunoglobulin E (IgE) level and specitic IgE sensitization were determined by the multiple allergen simultaneous test, allergy test, or skin-prick test. AD severity was categorized into mild, moderate, and severe based on treatments. Results: In total, 254 children (46.4 months, 53% boys) from seven hospitals completed the survey. The mean CDLQI score was 7.2 -12 5.5 (total score range of 0-30). Tlie respondents were divided into three groups according to their QoL score distribution, with 0-4 points (11 = 84),5-9 points (n = 90), and 210 points (n = 80) representing good, fair. and poor QoL, respectively. The more severe AD showed the higher CDLQI score signi#cantly (p = 0.001). Compared with other groups, children with poor QoL were more sensitized to inhalant allergens (odds ratio [OR] 1.29 [95% confidence interval {CI}],1.03 - 1.62) and had more exacerbating factors (OR 1.26 [95% CI, 1.04 - 1.54]), which included inhalation allergen-related exacerbating factors (OR 2.54 [95% CI, 1.23 - 5.23), even after adjusting for age, total IgE, body mass index, severity, and use of moisturizer. The concordance between animal sensitization and an exacerbating factor, including dog and cat, was fair, with 0.39 K and 0.85 accuracy. Conclusion: This study showed t/mt impaired QoL in children with AD is associated with inhalant allergen sensitization and inhalant allergen-related exacerbation factors. Especially, dog and cat sensitization was a significant exacerbating factor. Purpose: This study investigated palliative care physicians’ attitudes regarding social issues related to opioid use. Methods: An email survey was sent to 674 physicians who were members of the Korean Society for Hospice and Palliative Care (KSHPC). Results: Data from 66 physicians were analyzed (response rate, 9.8%). About 70% of participants stated that their prescribing patterns were not influenced by social issues related to opioid use, and 90% of participants thought that additional regulations should be limited to non-cancer pain. Under the current circumstances, pain education for physicians is urgently needed, as well as increased awareness among the public. Half of the respondents identified the KSHPC as the primary organization responsible for providing pain education. Conclusion: Palliative care physicians’ prescribing patterns were not influenced by social issues related to opioid use, and these issues also should not affect cancer pain control. Background: The expansion of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has resulted in a reduction in numbers of new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related deaths worldwide, except in some regions. As people with HIV live long and healthy lives, their health issues are also changing. In this review, we briefly summarize the global HIV epidemic and examine the changing trends in the epidemiology of HIV in Korea. Current Concepts: Since 2013, more than 1,000 new infections have been reported in Korea every year, and after reaching its peak at 1,223 in 2019, approximately 1,000 were reported each year during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Most newly infected people were men, and the proportion of young people aged 20 to 40 years, men who have sex with men, and foreigners has been steadily increasing. AIDS was the most common cause of death, and cancer, chronic diseases, and suicide were also important causes of death in Korea. Discussion and Conclusion: Achieving sustained ART and viral suppression is approaching the UNAIDS 95-95- 95 targets in Korea, but additional research and efforts are required to reduce late presentation and scale-up of HIV diagnosis. Targeted and coordinated prevention programs to prevent HIV among people from key populations are also needed. Additionally, supportive services for older people with HIV, including cancer screening and chronic disease management, and multifaceted efforts to reduce stigma and discrimination against people with HIV are needed in Korea. Background & Objective: Aging is a global trend, and Korea is also entering an aging society, which threatens the mental health of the elderly due to isolation, etc. In line with the growing domestic and international interest in elderly issues, this study aimed to identify the effects of depression, stress and self-esteem on the lives of the elderly in South Korea and to provide basic data for welfare measures. Methods: Depression, stress, self-esteem, and quality of life were measured in 104 South Korean seniors (32 men, 72 women, average age 72.94 years old). Differences between groups according to gender and residence type were confirmed. Results: There were no significant differences in stress among the elderly by place of residence, but there were significant differences in quality of life, depression, and self-esteem. Quality of life and self-esteem were higher in private housing than in public housing, and depression was higher in public housing than in private housing. In addition, lower depression and higher self-esteem were correlated with higher quality of life among the elderly. Conclusion: With the global trend of an aging society, it is essential to continue to pay attention to assist the lives of elderly and provide them with practical support and policies. Background/Aims: Although guidelines exist regarding the evaluation and management of patients with chronic constipation (CC), little is known about real-world clinical practice patterns. This study aimed to evaluate the various practices used to manage CC patients in various clinical settings in South Korea. Methods: A nationwide web-based survey was conducted, randomly selecting gastroenterologists and non-gastroenterologists. The 25-item questionnaire included physicians’ perceptions and practices regarding the available options for diagnosing and managing CC patients in Korea. Results: The study participants comprised 193 physicians (86 gastroenterologists, 44.6%) involved in the clinical management of CC patients. The mean clinical experience was 12 years. Only 21 of 193 respondents (10.9%) used the Rome criteria when diagnosing CC. The Bristol Stool Form Scale was used by 29% of the respondents (56/193), while the digital rectal examination was performed by 11.9% of the respondents (23/193). Laboratory testing and colonoscopies were performed more frequently by gastroenterologists than by non-gastroenterologists (both p=0.001). Physiologic testing was used more frequently by gastroenterologists (p=0.046), physicians at teaching hospitals, and physicians with clinical experience ≤10 years (both p<0.05). There were also significant differences in the preference for laxatives depending on the type of hospital. Conclusions: There were discrepancies in the diagnosis and management of CC patients depending on the clinical setting. The utilization rates of the Bristol Stool Form Scale and digital rectal examination by physicians are low in real-world clinical practice. BACKGROUND: The prevalence of sudden sensorineural hearing loss and facial palsy in patients with vestibular schwannoma and the association of sudden sensorineural hearing loss or facial palsy with vestibular schwannoma were investigated based on the population data of Korea. METHODS: This retrospective study used the Korean National Health Insurance Service data. Patients with vestibular schwannoma and those with a previous history of sudden sensorineural hearing loss or facial palsy were identified based on diagnostic, medication, magnetic resonance imaging, or audiometric codes from 2005 to 2020. The control group was established with propensity score matching. The risk for vestibular schwannoma in patients with a previous history of sudden sensorineural hearing loss or facial palsy was analyzed. RESULTS: There were 5751 patients in the vestibular schwannoma group and 23 004 in the control group. The rate of patients with a previous history of sudden sensorineural hearing loss in the vestibular schwannoma group (25.8%) was significantly higher than in the control group (P < .0001), as was the rate of patients with a previous history of facial palsy in the vestibular schwannoma group (4.7%) (P < .0001). Previous history of sudden sensorineural hearing loss was a significant risk factor for vestibular schwannoma (hazard ratio = 7.109, 95% confidence interval = 6.696-7.547). Previous history of facial palsy was also a significant risk factor for vestibular schwannoma (hazard ratio = 3.048, 95% confidence interval = 2.695-3.447). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of sudden sensorineural hearing loss or facial palsy was significantly higher in patients with vestibular schwannoma than in those without vestibular schwannoma. In South Korea, the manner and cause of death are determined by physicians. The present study aimed to investigate the differences in decisions made by physicians when completing death certificates and the factors that lead to these differences in South Korea. Questionnaires were used to survey 210 physicians who routinely complete death certificates, and demographic data along with information on their decisions regarding the manner and cause of death as well as natural and unnatural contributory causes were ascertained for eight representative cases. The study sample comprised 149 (71.0%) and 61 (29.0%) male and female physicians, respectively, and the mean age in this sample was 36.93 ± 4.51 years. We found that 64.7%, 61.4%, 7.6%, 4.3%, 4.3%, 65.7%, 84.3% and 53.3% of the physicians considered cases 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 as unnatural deaths, respectively, while 27.6%, 32.0%, 91.9%, 95%, 8.5%, 26.6%, 6.7% and 38.1% considered them to be natural deaths, respectively. In Case 5, 81.7% considered death to be due to an indeterminate cause. We found that differences may exist in how physicians select the manner of death when completing a death certificate and that this decision is influenced by several factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The 2015 Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus outbreak in Korea led to profound emotional and social burdens, especially in patients and health care professionals. Materials and Methods: Focus group interviews were conducted with 2 patients, 1 family member and 6 health care professionals about psychological distress related to MERS in 2017 and analyzed the interview data using the consensual qualitative research method. Results: Four domains and 17 core ideas were identified within three interview groups, including psychological distress during the outbreak, problems regarding the response to the outbreak, positive experiences, and future directions for enhancing intervention to improve mental health and prevent psychosocial problems during the outbreak. Psychological consequences were affected by the characteristics of the emerging infectious disease and the structure and process of institutional or governmental response to the MERS outbreak. Mental health services and psychosocial support reduced the negative impact on psychological distress. Conclusion: The MERS outbreak in 2015 gave rise to emotional and social injuries to patients and health care professionals, some of which can be long-lasting constraints in their lives. Preparedness in a society’s response to a pandemic considering mental health in related parties can minimize negative psychological consequences and enhance resilience at the individual and society levels. Background: Patellofemoral joint problems refer to a spectrum of conditions affecting the patellofemoral joint, which is the joint between the patella and femur. These conditions can cause pain and instability in the knee and affect an individual's ability to perform daily activities. Patellofemoral joint problems commonly cause knee pain, particularly among young athletes and physically active individuals. This review article discusses current patellofemoral joint problems, including their epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management. Current Concepts: Patellofemoral joint problems are presented as clinical symptoms of pain and instability. Dividing the diagnostic criteria into anterior knee pain, patella instability, and patellofemoral arthritis is useful. Anterior knee pain is diagnosed after excluding possible causes. Patellar instability is classified into recurrent dislocation, habitual dislocation (extension and flexion types), and permanent dislocation. Moreover, patellar instability can progress to the final stage of patellofemoral arthritis. Thus, patellar instability should be treated according to the Dejour criterion, and patellofemoral arthritis treatment requires artificial joint replacement surgery. Discussion and Conclusion: The pathological mechanism of patellofemoral joint problems still needs to be properly established, and multifactorial causes make it difficult to treat patellofemoral joint problems. Objective : This study aims to investigate the incidence of vestibular schwannoma (VS) and demographic characteristics in Korea using population-based National Health Insurance Service data. Methods : This study analyzed Korean National Health Insurance Service data from 2005 to 2020, based on the International Classification of Diseases, 10th version, Clinical Modification codes D333 and D431. Only those patients who had undergone magnetic resonance imaging and audiologic tests were considered definitive cases. Demographic variables included age, sex, treatment modality, hypertension, diabetics, dyslipidemia, smoking history, alcohol history, and income status. Results : The total number of VS patients was 5751. The average incidence rate was 0.71 per 100000 from 2005 to 2020, and the annual incidence rate increased from 0.33 in 2005 to 1.32 in 2019 but decreased to 0.80 in 2020. Incidence was highest in those aged 60–69 years (1.791) and lowest in those younger than 20 years (0.041). Incidence was higher in females, and the number of patients who received radiosurgery (46.64%) was largest compared to the wait and scan group (37.96%), microsurgery group (12.85%), or the group who received both (2.56%). Diabetes, dyslipidemia, and alcohol consumption increased the risk of VS, while cigarette smoking reduced the risk of VS. Conclusion : The incidence of VS exhibited an increasing trend from 2005 to 2019. Radiosurgery (46.64%) was the most common treatment modality. Purpose To evaluate the sensitivity of corticomedullary-phase imaging for detecting urinary stones in patients with renal colic who visited the emergency department. Materials and Methods This retrospective study included 253 patients with suspected renal colic from two tertiary hospitals in South Korea, who visited the emergency department and underwent CT urography. Two radiologists blinded to the clinical history independently reviewed the corticomedullary-phase images. The sensitivity for identifying urinary stones were evaluated for each reviewer. After the initial evaluation, the images were re-evaluated based on patient history. The sensitivity of re-evaluation were recorded. Results Of 253 patients, 150 (59%) had urinary stones. Among them, significant stones were observed in 138 patients (92%), and obstructive changes on CT in 124 patients (82.7%). For identifying significant urinary stones, the sensitivity was 98.6% (136/138) for both the reviewers. For identifying significant urinary stones with urinary obstruction, the sensitivity was 99.2% (123/124) for reviewer 1, and 100% (124/124) for reviewer 2. The sensitivity for identifying significant stones increased from 98.6% to 100% for reviewer 1, and from 98.6% to 99.3% for reviewer 2 in the re-evaluation session. Conclusion The corticomedullary-phase CT urography was sensitive for diagnosing urolithiasis in patients with acute renal colic who visited the emergency department. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Aims: Metachronous recurrence incidences and risk factors following endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for gastric adenocarcinoma and dysplasias were investigated. Methods: Retrospective review of electronic medical records of patients who underwent gastric ESD at The Catholic University of Korea, Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital. Results: A total of 190 subjects were enrolled for analysis during the study period. The mean age was 64.4 years and the male sex occupied 73.7%. The mean observation period following ESD was 3.45 years. The annual incidence rate of metachronous gastric neoplasms (MGN) was about 3.96%. The annual incidence rate was 5.36% for the low-grade dysplasia group, 6.47% for the high-grade dysplasia group, and 2.74% for the EGC group. MGN was more frequent in the dysplasia group than in the EGC group (p<0.05). For those with MGN development, the mean time interval from ESD to MGN was 4.1 (±1.8) years. By using the Kaplan-Meier model, the estimated mean MGN free survival time was 9.97 years (95% confidence interval, 8.53-11.40) The histological types of MGN were not related to the primary histology types. Conclusions: MGN following ESD developed in 3.96% annually and MGN was more frequent in the dysplasia group. The histological types of MGN did not correlate with those of primary neoplasm. Objectives: The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency promotes vaccination by regularly providing information on its benefits for reducing the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study aimed to analyze the number of averted severe COVID-19 cases and COVID-19-related deaths by age group and quantify the impact of Republic of Korea's nationwide vaccination campaign. Methods: We analyzed an integrated database from the beginning of the vaccination campaign on February 26, 2021 to October 15, 2022. We estimated the cumulative number of severe cases and COVID-19-related deaths over time by comparing observed and estimated cases among unvaccinated and vaccinated groups using statistical modeling. We compared daily age-adjusted rates of severe cases and deaths in the unvaccinated group to those in the vaccinated group and calculated the susceptible population and proportion of vaccinated people by age. Results: There were 23,793 severe cases and 25,441 deaths related to COVID-19. We estimated that 119,579 (95% confidence interval [CI], 118,901-120,257) severe COVID-19 cases and 137,636 (95% CI, 136,909-138,363) COVID-19-related deaths would have occurred if vaccination had not been performed. Therefore, 95,786 (95% CI, 94,659-96,913) severe cases and 112,195 (95% CI, 110,870-113,520) deaths were prevented as a result of the vaccination campaign. Conclusion: We found that, if the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign had not been implemented, the number of severe cases and deaths would have been at least 4 times higher. This research explores how the need for touch (NFT) and interdependent self-construal are associated with online shopping attitudes (safety, fun, convenience, money-saving, and time-saving). Data were collected from 413 female and 278 male college students in Korea. Regression analyses with factor analysis were used for data analysis. Consumers who want to touch products have less positive attitudes toward online shopping. Consumers with a higher instrumental touch have less positive attitudes toward online shopping. Consumers with higher levels of autotelic touch have less positive attitudes toward online shopping for fun. However, consumers with a high autotelic touch have more positive attitudes toward online shopping for safety, convenience, and money-saving. Consumers who value relationships with others perceive online shopping as unsafe but have positive attitudes toward online shopping for fun, comfort, and cost reduction. Purpose This single-arm phase II trial investigate the efficacy and safety of S-1 plus oxaliplatin (SOX) in patients with metastatic breast cancer. Materials and Methods Patients with metastatic breast cancer previously treated with anthracyclines and taxanes were enrolled. Patients received S-1 (40-60 mg depending on patient's body surface area, twice a day, day 1-14) and oxaliplatin (130 mg/m², day 1) in 3 weeks cycle until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR) according to Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumor 1.1. Secondary endpoints included time-to-progression (TTP), duration-of-response (DoR), overall survival (OS), and adverse events. Results A total of 87 patients were enrolled from 11 institutions in Korea. Hormone receptor was positive in 54 (62.1%) patients and six (6.9%) had human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive disease. Forty-eight patients (85.1%) had visceral metastasis and 74 (55.2%) had more than three sites of metastases. The ORR of SOX regimen was 38.5% (95% confidence interval [CI], 26.9 to 50.0) with a median TTP of 6.0 months (95% CI, 5.1 to 6.9). Median DoR and OS were 10.3 months (95% CI, 5.5 to 15.1) and 19.4 (95% CI, not estimated) months, respectively. Grade 3 or 4 neutropenia was reported in 28 patients (32.1%) and thrombocytopenia was observed in 23 patients (26.6%). Background: The stigma associated with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is relatively neglected in policies for handling the disease. Stigmatization occurs only within specific social contexts in local societies. Objective: This study aims to examine COVID-19 survivors' experiences of social stigma and discrimination in South Korea in the first 2 years of the pandemic. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted. Results: Of 52 participants, 45 reported that they had to cope with stigma and discrimination in their intimate social relationships, workplaces, and children's schools, ranging from subtle actions to job loss. Sexual minorities who were involved in mass disease transmission in the early part of the pandemic experienced a higher level of stigmatization. The stigmatization dealt with in this study was related to two themes: survivors' sense of causing trouble and possibility of transmission. Conclusion: By intertwining this stigma with the experiences of public health measures through the voices of survivors, this study reveals the local context of East Asia in terms of culture-specific aspects of COVID-19-related stigma. This study investigates the possibilities offered by the development of graphene environment technology that can contribute to new and effective approaches for the transition to an ecologically benign ecosystem. To analyze the research and development progress in graphene environment technology, graphene environment technology research trends of South Korea for the years 2009e2020 are investigated by acquiring information pertaining to national research and development projects related to graphene environment technology from the National Science and Technology Information Service. Both structured and unstructured data are analyzed using diverse text-mining methods, such as keyword frequency analysis, association rule mining, and topic modelling. The results indicate that graphene research in South Korea is focused primarily on graphene use in batteries and energy-storage devices, such as solar cells, fuel cells, and secondary batteries. This study can help understand the manner by which the South Korean government has been investing in the research and development of graphene environment technology; additionally, it discusses the future applications and prospects of graphene for the next decade. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, frontline healthcare workers (HCWs) suffered more distress from the possibility of contracting the virus, quarantine, social stigma, and prejudice against their families. Many studies have investigated the impact of the pandemic on HCWs; however, studies or guidelines presenting strategies to overcome these challenges are lacking. As part of a 2020 research project supported by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, titled “Health impact assessment of healthcare workers undertaking coronavirus disease 2019 treatment and management in Korea: Identifying problems and researching effective solutions” (HC20C0003), we created guidelines to respond to serious problems posed by infection control. and burnout among HCWs during COVID-19 response measures throughout the extended pandemic period. We formulated the guidelines by means of a systematic review and collated them with the latest literature. The guidelines will highlight the gravity and impact of infection control and burnout among HCWs responding to COVID-19 and include potential prevention strategies, and they can be used as a reference in the event of another emerging infectious disease outbreak in the future. Background: We aimed to investigate Krebs von den Lungen 6 (KL-6) assay results in a clinical laboratory to better understand patient population and test utilization. Methods: We investigated serum KL-6 test results in Korean adults by the type of medical institution visited between October 2019 and December 2021. Results: Overall, 7,677 KL-6 tests were performed in 5,527 Korean adults (3,627 men and 1,900 women) with a median age of 68.3 years (interquartile range 59.6 - 75.8). The median KL-6 level in 507 patients who visited health promotion centers was lower than the other 5,020 patients who visited other types of medical institutions (196 U/mL vs. 588.0 U/mL, respectively, p < 0.05). Increased KL-6 levels (≥ 500 U/mL) were observed in 0.8% of patients who visited health promotion centers and in 57.1% of patients who visited other types of medical institutions. Background: Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare autoinflammatory neutrophilic dermatosis that rapidly evolves. However, little is known about the clinicopathological features and prognosis of pyoderma gangrenosum. Aims: We aimed to document clinicopathologic and prognostic data of the patients with pyoderma gangrenosum. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we reviewed case records of patients diagnosed with pyoderma gangrenosum between 1999–2019. Results: Fifty-three patients were identified by reviewing medical records for skin biopsy; of these, 37 were men and 16 were women. Mean age at onset was 43.3 ± 18.5 years. The most frequently affected area was the lower extremities (60.4%), followed by the head and neck (17.0%). The most common subtype was ulcerative (47.2%), followed by bullous (22.6%). 30 cases had underlying diseases and the most common were malignancy (24.5%), followed by inflammatory bowel diseases (18.9%). The proportion of cases with history of trauma were significantly higher in post-operative type (100%) as compared to the bullous type (8.3%). Histologic features of granulation tissue were frequently found in post-operative type (66.7%) and bullous type (58.3%). Granulomas were predominantly found in bullous type (58.3%). Age <60 years appeared to be significantly associated with multiple lesions. Partial-to-complete remission was observed in 40 cases (75.5%). Nine (17.0%) cases experienced recurrence with a median progression-free period of six months (interquartile range of 3.0–9.0months). Cases with underlying hematologic disorders and the bullous subtype were significantly associated with early recurrence. Limitations: This study was a single-centre study with a retrospective design. Conclusion: Pyoderma gangrenosum appears to have ethnic differences. Underlying haematologic disorders and bullous subtype have a worse prognosis. Purpose: The number of Korean midwifery licensing examination applicants has steadily decreased due to the low birth rate and lack of training institutions for midwives. This study aimed to evaluate the adequacy of the examination-based licensing system and the possibility of a training-based licensing system. Methods: A survey questionnaire was developed and dispatched to 230 professionals from December 28, 2022 to January 13, 2023, through an online form using Google Surveys. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the results. Results: Responses from 217 persons (94.3%) were analyzed after excluding incomplete responses. Out of the 217 participants, 198 (91.2%) agreed with maintaining the current examination-based licensing system; 94 (43.3%) agreed with implementing a training-based licensing system to cover the examination costs due to the decreasing number of applicants; 132 (60.8%) agreed with establishing a midwifery education evaluation center for a training-based licensing system; 163 (75.1%) said that the quality of midwifery might be lowered if midwives were produced only by a training-based licensing system, and 197 (90.8%) said that the training of midwives as birth support personnel should be promoted in Korea. Conclusion: Favorable results were reported for the examination-based licensing system; however, if a training-based licensing system is implemented, it will be necessary to establish a midwifery education evaluation center to manage the quality of midwives. As the annual number of candidates for the Korean midwifery licensing examination has been approximately 10 in recent years, it is necessary to consider more actively granting midwifery licenses through a training- based licensing system. Purpose The treatment of male breast cancer (MBC) has been extrapolated from female breast cancer (FBC) because of its rarity despite their different clinicopathologic characteristics. We aimed to investigate the distribution of intrinsic subtypes based on immunohistochemistry, their clinical impact, and treatment pattern in clinical practice through a multicenter study in Korea. Materials and Methods We retrospectively analyzed clinical data of 248 MBC patients from 18 institutions across the country from January 1995 to July 2016. Results The median age of MBC patients was 63 years (range, 25 to 102 years). Among 148 intrinsic subtype classified patients, 61 (41.2%), 44 (29.7%), 29 (19.5%), and 14 (9.5%) were luminal A, luminal B, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, and triple-negative breast cancer, respectively. Luminal A subtype showed trends for superior survival compared to other subtypes. Most hormone receptor-positive patients (166 patients, 82.6%) received adjuvant endocrine treatment. Five-year completion of adjuvant endocrine treatment was associated with superior disease-free survival (DFS) in patients classified with an intrinsic subtype (hazard ratio [HR], 0.15; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.04 to 0.49; p=0.002) and in all patients (HR, 0.16; 95% CI, 0.05 to 0.54; p=0.003). Conclusion Distribution of subtypes of MBC was similar to FBC and luminal type A was most common. Overall survival tended to be improved for luminal A subtype, although there was no statistical significance. Completion of adjuvant endocrine treatment was associated with prolonged DFS in intrinsic subtype classified patients. MBC patients tended to receive less treatment. Background: Diagnosis of syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection, can be based on clinical information and various combinations of results of both non-treponemal and treponemal assays. Because understanding a patient population is helpful for test utilization in the clinical laboratory, we aimed to investigate the results of syphilis serology tests requested from local clinics in Korea. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the syphilis serology test results of serum Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR), Treponema pallidum latex agglutination (TPLA), RPR titer, and fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) IgG, and IgM tests performed in Korean adults in the laboratory information system of Green Cross Laboratories. We investigated the patterns of syphilis serology test results and possible interpretation according to combinations of syphilis serology based on a traditional testing algorithm. Results: During the one-year study period, 33,746 RPR tests were performed in Korean adults (7,622 men and 26,124 women) with a median age of 35.1 years (interquartile range 30.8 - 43.4 years). Among these RPR tests, 317 (0.9%) showed RPR+ results and were performed simultaneous with TPLA tests. Among these 317 patients, 187 (59.0%) had RPR+/TPLA+ results. Among 130 patients with RPR+/TPLA-results, FTA-ABS IgG and IgM were only tested in 15 (11.5%): 14 were IgG-/IgM-, and one who underwent only the IgM test showed a negative result (probably a biological false positive of RPR). Among 187 RPR+/TPLA+ patients, 60 (2.1%) had RPR titer ≤ 1:8, and 10 were FTA-ABS IgM+ (including weak reactive results probably due to current infection or rare biological false-positive). Among 121 patients with RPR+/TPLA+/RPR titer ≤ 1:4, 30 were tested for FTA-ABS IgG and/or IgM: the two FTA-ABS IgM+ (including weak reactive) patients had an RPR titer of 1:4. Conclusions: This study will help to understand patient populations and test utilization for syphilis serology test interpretation in clinical laboratories in Korea. Objective: The real-world INFORM study analyzed sociodemographics, treatment patterns and clinical outcomes for patients with newly diagnosed advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) in Australia, South Korea (S.Korea) and Taiwan preceding incorporation of poly(ADPribose) polymerase inhibitors into clinical practice. Methods: Retrospective data from patients diagnosed with EOC (high-grade serous EOC for Taiwan) between January 2014 and December 2018 with =12 months follow-up from diagnosis were analyzed descriptively. Survival was evaluated by Kaplan-Meier with two-sided 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Of the 987 patients (Australia, 223; S.Korea, 513; Taiwan, 251), 98% received platinum-based chemotherapy (CT). In S.Korea and Taiwan 76.0% and 78.9% respectively underwent primary cytoreductive surgery; in Australia, 56.5% had interval debulking surgery. Bevacizumab was included in primary/maintenance therapy for 22.4%, 14.6% and 6.8% of patients in Australia, S.Korea and Taiwan, respectively. Patients receiving bevacizumab were high-risk (reimbursement policy) and achieved similar real-world progression-free survival (PFS) compared with CT only. Overall, the median real-world PFS (months; 95% CI) was similar across Australia (16.0 [14.63-18.08]), S.Korea (17.7 [16.18-19.27]) and Taiwan (19.1 [17.56-22.29]). Conclusion: This study reveals poor prognosis despite differences in demographics and treatment patterns for patients with EOC across Asia-Pacific suggesting the need for biomarker-driven novel therapies to improve outcomes. Purpose: To grasp public opinion accurately, we conducted an opinion poll on beliefs and attitudes toward physician-assisted suicide (PAS). Methods: A randomized telephone survey ensuring a representative sample was conducted, 1,007 participants aged 18 years or older (response rate, 9.5%). Results: The main results are as follows: i) 61.1% of participants thought that the current social support system for terminally ill patients and their families is insufficient; ii) 60% of participants did not recognize the term "hospice and palliative care"; iii) 81.7% of participants would not like to receive life-sustaining treatment if there is no possibility of recovery; iv) 58.4% of participants would like to receive hospice and palliative care if they are diagnosed with a terminal illness; v) the priorities for dignified dying were preparing a support system to reduce the burden of care (28.6%), economic support including reduction of medical expenses (26.7%), expansion of hospice and palliative care services (25.4%), and legalization of PAS (13.6%); and vi) 58.3% of participants agreed that the expansion of hospice and palliative care should precede the legalization of PAS. Objectives: We estimated the overall and age-specific percentages of the Korean population with presumed immunity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2) as of April 2022 using the national registry. Methods: We used the national coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and vaccination registry from South Korea, as described to define individuals with a previous history of COVID-19 infection, vaccination, or both, as persons with presumed immunity. Results: Of a total of 53,304,627 observed persons, 24.4% had vaccination and infection, 58.1% had vaccination and no infection, 7.6% had infection and no vaccination, and 9.9% had no immunity. The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant emerged at a time when the presumed population immunity ranged from 80% to 85%; however, nearly half of the children were presumed to have no immunity. Conclusion: We report a gap in population immunity, with lower presumed protection in children than in adults. Background: The appropriate use of the thyroglobulin (Tg) test involves the concurrent measurement of Tg autoantibodies (Tg Ab) due to the potential for false low or false high Tg due to Tg Ab interference. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed Tg and Tg Ab test results requested from local clinics and hospitals in Korea between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021. Results: During the study period, 13,811 Tg tests were performed. Among them, 6,769 Tg tests were identified as being repeatedly measured from 2,988 Korean adults. Among the 6,769 performed Tg tests, 2,733 (40.4%) did not have concurrently performed Tg Ab tests. Among the 2,988 subjects, 1,089 (36.4%) had no concurrently measured Tg Ab test results. Among 4,036 Tg results with concurrently measured Tg Ab, 1,045 (25.9%) had positive Tg Ab results, which could interfere with Tg concentration measurements. Epidemiological information on hepatitis A among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Korea is scarce. This retrospective study was performed at a tertiary care hospital and included 756 PLHIV with anti- hepatitis A virus (HAV) IgG tests. Between 2012 and 2021, the age at antiHAV IgG seroconversion is gradually delayed, and the proportion of individuals susceptible to HAV infection increased among adult PLHIV in Korea. The independent risk factors for HAV seropositivity were female sex and HBs antigen (Ag) positivity. Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused health problems and distress among healthcare workers (HCWs), so supportive measures to promote their health and relieve distress are needed. Materials and Methods: We conducted two rounds of Delphi surveys with 20 COVID-19- related frontline healthcare professionals and public officials. The surveys evaluated means of supporting HCWs’ health by improving health care systems and working environments in terms of effectiveness and urgency. The validity of the measures was assessed by calculating the content validity ratio. Results: The top-priority measures to support HCWs were “secure isolation units capable of treating severe cases” in the facility infrastructure category, “secure nursing staff dedicated for patients in the intensive care units” in the personnel infrastructure category, “improve communication between central office and frontline field” in the cooperation system category, “support personal protective equipment and infection control supplies” in the aid supplies category, and “realization of hazard pay” in the physical/mental health and compensation category. Conclusion: There was consensus among the experts on the validity and priorities of policies in the facility, personnel, cooperation, supplies, and compensation categories regarding measures to promote COVID-19 related HCWs’ health. Background: Throughout the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, not only medical personnel but also paramedics or emergency medical technicians (EMT) have faced multiple physical and psychological challenges while performing their duties. The current study aimed to evaluate the psychological effects of managing patients with COVID-19 on the paramedics and EMT. Materials and Methods: A survey targeting paramedics and EMT in Korea was conducted in December 2020. An official letter requesting participation and with the link to an onlinebased survey was sent to the Public Emergency Medical Services. Only one response was accepted from each participant. Results: A total of 326 paramedics and EMT responded to the survey. Among them, 66.3% (216/326) had experience in managing patients with COVID-19. No differences in the distribution of sex, age, working area, duration of working experience, and underlying comorbidities were observed between those who did (COVID-19 group) and did not (nonCOVID-19 group) experience managing patients with COVID-19. The percentage of participants who showed severe posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms was significantly higher in the COVID group than in the non-COVID group (11.1% vs. 3.6%, P = 0.029). The participants in the COVID group had a significantly higher mean Global Assessment of Recent Stress Scale score than those in the non-COVID group (18.7 ± 11.1 vs. 16.1 ± 9.9, P = 0.042). The proportion of paramedics and EMT willing to leave their job if given a chance was higher in the COVID group than the non-COVID group (24.1% vs. 9.1%, P = 0.001). Additionally, paramedics and EMT in the COVID group tended to show concern regarding exposure to COVID-19 infection. Background/Aims: Although pediatric ulcerative colitis (UC) has a different phenotype and clinical course than adult UC, its clinical features and outcomes are poorly defined, especially in Asian populations. This study investigated the clinical features and long-term outcomes of pediatric UC in a Korean population. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 208 patients aged <18 years diagnosed with UC between 1987 and 2013. The patient characteristics at diagnosis according to the Paris classification and the clinical course were analyzed. Results: The male-to-female ratio was 1.3:1, and the median patient age was 15.5 years. At diagnosis, 28.8% of patients had proctitis (E1), 27.8%, left-sided colitis (E2); 5.2%, extensive colitis (E3); and 38.2%, pancolitis (E4). The cumulative probabilities of extension after 5, 10, 15, and 20 years were 32.7%, 40.4%, 52.5%, and 65.8%, respectively. Eighteen patients underwent colectomy, and three patients had colorectal cancer. The cumulative probabilities of colectomy after 5, 10, 15, and 20 years were 7.1%, 8.9%, 12.6%, and 15.6%, and those of colorectal cancer after 10, 15, and 20 years were 0%, 2.1%, and 12.0%, respectively. The disease extent, Pediatric Ulcerative Colitis Activity Index severity, and systemic corticosteroid therapy were significant risk factors for colectomy. The development of primary sclerosing cholangitis was significantly associated with colorectal cancer. Conclusions: This study provides detailed information on the disease phenotype and long-term clinical outcomes in a large cohort of Korean children with UC. Background/Aims: Biliary complications including biliary strictures and bile leaks are the most common complications that occur after liver transplantation (LT). Endoscopic treatment with endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) is considered the first-line treatment, and percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) can serve as an alternative or rescue therapy. However, nationwide clinical data on the frequency of ERC and PTC following LT have not yet been investigated. Methods: Using the nationwide claims database, we investigated patients who underwent LT between 2012 and 2014 in Korea and followed them until 2015. We analyzed the prevalence and characteristics of patients and biliary procedures, including ERC and PTC implemented after LT. Results: A total of 3,481 patients underwent LT during the 3-year study period. Among them, 3.0% of patients underwent biliary intervention postoperatively during the same hospitalization period, and 21.4% of patients received biliary intervention later on after initially being discharged from the hospital following LT. A total of 16.9% and 12.1% of patients underwent ERC and PTC after LT, respectively. The median period from LT to the first biliary intervention was 7.8 months (interquartile range, 3.5 to 14.6 months), and these patients underwent an average of 3.2±2.8 biliary procedures during the follow-up period. Patients undergoing living donor LT were more than twice as likely to undergo biliary procedures as those undergoing deceased donor LT (25.5% vs 12.1%). Conclusions: Approximately one-fourth of patients in Korea who underwent LT subsequently underwent ERC or PTC. Introduction: As the elderly comprise 14.3% of the South Korean population, suicide among the elderly has become a significant public concern. Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed data from the Emergency Department-Based Injury In-depth Surveillance nationwide of South Korea. Patients aged ≥ 65years old who intentionally caused self-injury were included. These elderly patients were subdivided into age groups, and their associated characteristics and correlation between suicide attempt methods and the clinical outcomes were analyzed. Results: A total of 5,333 cases were analyzed. The mean age of the subjects was 75.1 years old, comprising 3,039 males (57.0%) and 2,294 females (43.0%). Substance exposure was the most frequent method across all age groups. In terms of risk factors of admission, drowning, hanging, and asphyxia showed the following results: OR 2.372 for the first group; OR 2.224 for the second group; and OR 5.606 for the third group. Fall/slip was identified as a risk factor of admission in the first and second groups (OR 5.016 for the first group; OR 5.101 for the second group). In terms of risk factors of mortality, drowning, hanging, and asphyxia showed the following results: OR 9.066 for the first group; OR 7.320 for the second group; and OR 7.135 for the third group. With regard to fall/slip, the results were OR 14.596 for the first group; OR 10.096 for the second group; and OR 24.167 for the third group. Conclusions: This study showed that clinical outcomes were different according to the suicide-related characteristics and chosen suicide method. Purpose: Pediatricians have a significant responsibility to educate mothers about the importance of breastfeeding. However, there have been minimal efforts in the courses of resident training in Korea. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the change in knowledge and attitude before and after a 4-week breastfeeding educational intervention among multicenter residents. Methods: Prospective interventional educational research was designed for residents at eight training hospitals in Korea. Institutional reviews were obtained in each hospital. The education curriculum consisted of 14 courses regarding breastfeeding theory and practice. These materials were used to teach pediatric residents for 4 weeks. Knowledgebased tests were administered before the course, and re-tests were administered after the course using different test items of similar levels. Test scores and survey responses were compared before and after the intervention. Results: A total of 73 residents (1st year 20, 2nd year 23, 3rd year 16, and 4th year residents 14) from eight training hospitals completed the intervention. Their average age was 30.3±2.9 years, 17 (23.3%) were male, 22 (30.1%) were married, and eight had more than one child of their own. The mean pre-test score was 61.8±13.4 and the mean posttest score was 78.3±7.5 (P<0.001). The inter-grade difference in the score was significant in the pre-test (P=0.005), but not significant in the post-test (P=0.155). There were more responses of obtaining confidence after the intervention (P<0.001). Conclusion: In our study, pediatric residents showed improvement in their knowledge and confidence level after 4 weeks of the breastfeeding curriculum. Background: Limited data are available regarding intraindividual changes in the Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer (M2BPGi), a liver fibrosis biomarker, performed for health checkups in Korean subjects. Methods: Through a laboratory information system, we retrospectively investigated longitudinally measured M2BPGi to assess intraindividual changes in M2BPGi test results. Results: During a 38-month study period, 526 test results from 246 Korean subjects undergoing general health checkups were requested from 13 local clinics and hospitals. Among all 246 subjects, 190 (77.2%) exhibited negative M2BPGi (< 1.0 C.O.I.) during the initial measurement. Among all 246 subjects, 210 (85.4%) did not experience any changes in qualitative results during a follow-up. Among 42 subjects with initially 1+ positive results for M2BPGi, 17 (40.5%) changed to a negative M2BPGi result at least once during follow-up. No subjects with initially negative results or 1+ positive (1.0 ≤ C.O.I. < 3.0) results changed to 2+ positive (≥ 3.0 C.O.I.) results during the 38-month follow-up period. Conclusions: Some subjects exhibited qualitative changes in M2BPGi during follow-up health examinations. Future studies are needed to clarify the clinical implication of such changes. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a highly efficacious and safe modality for the treatment of recurrent or refractory Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), with overall success rates of 90%. Thus, FMT has been widely used for 10 years. The incidence and clinical characteristics of CDI, the main indication for FMT, differ between countries. To date, several guidelines have been published. However, most of them were published in Western countries and therefore cannot represent the Korean national healthcare systems. One of the barriers to performing FMT is a lack of national guidelines. Accordingly, multidisciplinary experts in this field have developed practical guidelines for FMT. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is becoming essential in the fields of precision oncology. With implementation of NGS in daily clinic, the needs for continued education, facilitated interpretation of NGS results and optimal treatment delivery based on NGS results have been addressed. Molecular tumor board (MTB) is multidisciplinary approach to keep pace with the growing knowledge of complex molecular alterations in patients with advanced solid cancer. Although guidelines for NGS use and MTB have been developed in western countries, there is limitation for reflection of Korea's public health environment and daily clinical practice. Background/aims Previous studies have reported conflicting results on the effects of arm slings on the balance and gait of patients with hemiparesis. These previous studies did not consider the ability to control the upper extremity on the affected side as a factor that could affect the patient's balance or gait when an arm sling was applied. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of upper extremity function in the affected side and arm position according to the sling type on balance, gait and fall. Methods A total of 31 stroke patients participated in the study and were assigned to two groups according to upper extremity function (low-score group and high-score group). Under three conditions (no sling, forearm sling and shoulder sling), a fall risk test, postural stability test and limits of stability test were performed and speed, stride duration, step length and total time were measured. Results When the high-score group wore forearm slings, the static and dynamic balance ability decreased and the fall risk increased. When the low-score group wore forearm slings and shoulder slings, the static and dynamic balance ability increased and the fall risk decreased. The high-score group had a shorter gait time when wearing shoulder slings. When the low-score group wore forearm slings, the speed and step length increased and the total time decreased, enhancing the overall gait ability. conclusions For stroke patients with better upper extremity control ability, shoulder slings are more appropriate. For patients with poor upper extremity control ability, forearm slings are more appropriate. Purpose: There are few reports on the therapeutic effects of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists in boys with central precocious puberty, and studies reported in Korea are very rare. We aimed to assess the significance of clinical factors and the effects of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist treatment on final adult height in boys diagnosed with central precocious puberty. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the medical records of 18 boys treated for idiopathic central precocious puberty between 2007 and 2018 at Chosun University Hospital. Gestational age, birth weight, and parental height were assessed at the initial visit. Chronological age, bone age, bone age/chronological age ratio, height and height standard deviation scores, predicted adult height, body mass index, and hormone levels were assessed during the treatment period. Results: At the time of diagnosis, the chronological age was 9.9±0.6 years, the bone age was 11.6±1.0 years, and the bone age/chronological age ratio was 1.20±0.1. The bone age/chronological age ratio decreased significantly to 1.12±0.1 at the end of treatment (P<0.05). The luteinizing hormone/follicular stimulating hormone ratios were 3.4±1.2, 0.6±0.4, and 0.6±1.0 at the start of treatment, after 1 year of treatment, and at the end of treatment, respectively. After gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist treatment, the final adult height reached 172.0±4.8 cm compared to the target height range of 171.0±4.0 cm. Background/Aims: Recently, the treatment of Crohn’s disease (CD) has changed to a treat-to-target strategy, in which disease progression is prevented with early intervention. We analyzed the long-term evolution of nonstricturing, nonpenetrating (B1) disease at diagnosis and factors related to disease evolution in pediatric CD. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 402 patients between 2000 and 2013 who were younger than 18 years and had B1 disease at CD diagnosis. The median follow-up was 6.1 years (range, 1 to 13 years). The cumulative probabilities of developing stricturing (B2) or penetrating (B3) disease and associations between risk factors and disease behavior evolution were evaluated. Results: Among the 402 patients, 75 (18.7%) had B2 or B3 disease by the final follow-up. The cumulative probabilities of disease behavior evolution were 18.3%, 34.3%, and 50.9% at 5, 10, and 13 years, respectively. Patients whose disease progressed had an increased risk of intestinal resection (hazard ratio [HR], 3.61; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.25 to 6.03; p<0.001). First-degree family history of inflammatory bowel disease (HR, 2.38; 95% CI, 1.07 to 5.28; p=0.032), isolated ileal involvement at diagnosis (HR, 7.55; 95% CI, 1.04 to 15.57; p=0.045), and positive anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibody titers (HR, 2.10; 95% CI, 1.03 to 4.25; p=0.040) were associated with disease behavior evolution. Early treatment with biologics significantly reduced disease progression (HR, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.79 to 3.39; p=0.042). Conclusions: This study suggests that early aggressive therapy should be considered in B1 behavior pediatric CD patients with risk factors of disease evolution to improve long-term outcomes. Background/Aims: This study aimed to determine the current status of facilities, equipment, and personnel for endoscopic sedation from endoscopy units of representative hospitals in South Korea. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted on 50 qualified endoscopy units accredited by the Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Results: All included endoscopy units had regulations and educational programs regarding sedation training for endoscopists and nursing personnel. There present one assisting nurse during endoscopy in 35 units (70%) and at least two nurses in 12 units (24.0%). All endoscopy units had examination rooms equipped with oxygen supply and suction systems. Endoscopist-directed sedation was performed in 48 units (96.0%). Propofol-based sedation was the most used sedation method. All units had a separate recovery bay. The daily number of patients per bed was greater than 10 in 17 units (34.0%). In 26 (52.0%) units, a single nurse cared for ≥10 patients per day. All the units fulfilled the discharge criteria. Conclusions: This study presents data regarding endoscopic sedation clinical practice in 50 endoscopy units in South Korea.
