In the field of K-12 education, the demand for effective coding education is gradually expanding with various coding tools such as Scratch being popularly used as an effective learning environment. However, an answer to the question of what constitutes appropriate computing concepts for children (e.g. elementary school students) has not been fully answered. In this regard, this study worked to develop computational fairy tales (CFT) for coding beginners and applied it to the elementary school classroom environment in Korea. This CFT was developed by extracting the concepts of computer science through literature analysis, developing a plot/episode and creating a story. The final CFT developed is composed of 15 core computational concepts. 152 elementary students participated in the experiment where students read the CFT and solved related problems over two weeks period. We analyzed the effects of the CFT on the acquisition of basic computing concepts and coding attitudes. The results of the study showed that both the score of computing concept comprehension and attitude was enhanced significantly (p<0.001). This study demonstrates the positive educational effects of CFTs in fostering understanding of basic computing concepts before students begin to code with algorithms directly.

By illustrating how eight Korean English language learners came to understand embedded assumptions from traditional fairy tales and retell the tales through a critical literacy framed English literacy workshop, this qualitative study argues that fairy tales as English reading texts can effectively cultivate English learners' critical stance and expand their understanding of texts. This article focuses on discussions about and the reconstructions of fairy tales produced by students throughout an English literacy workshop. The findings reveal that the students started to display a critical stance and expand their understanding of varied social assumptions related to power, class, gender, and social norms grounded in their reality.

This article examines the semiotic landscape of the Chinatown in Incheon, South Korea. Using the geosemiotic framework as a heuristic guide, we analyze how the spectacle of Chinatown is constituted through spatial, linguistic, semiotic, and material resources, and find that the unordinariness of the place is contingent on and emerges through its juxtaposition with ordinary space, practice, and language use. We suggest this apparent paradox can be understood through the process of scaling, during which signs and practices that might have been considered quotidian become monumentalised and ritualised when they are transported across timescales and spatial scales. Incheon's Chinatown then affords an opportunity to understand the semiotic and material production of 'unordinariness' through 'ordinariness'. These collective spatiotemporal disjunctures or juxtapositions reveal unexpected but nonetheless crucial intersections among language, semiotics, and nationness.

This qualitative study examined a class of 20 five-year-old Korean children's literary sessions that were composed of whole-group read-alouds of fairy/folk tales and their parodies, including discussion and follow-up activities based on critical literacy practices. Over a 15-week period, multiple sources of data including observations, open-ended interviews, written materials, and children's artifacts were collected. We found that these literary sessions based on a critical literacy approach helped the children (1) perceive the stories from different/multiple perspectives, (2) challenge stereotypes, and (3) confront the dominant social ideology/norms. The findings of the study add several important implications for implementing critical literacy in early childhood classrooms, which apply to the teachers' questions and selection of books, as well as the system and consistency of instruction.

Der Beitrag geht davon aus, dass Übersetzungen in Zeiten der Unterdrückung der eigenen Sprache, Kultur und Lebenswelt – beispielsweise im von Japan kolonial besetzten Korea – oft als Mittel zur Aufklärung, Befreiung und Modernisierung eingesetzt werden. Als Beispiele dafür dienen drei in den 1920er Jahren entstandene koreanische Übertragungen des Märchens Der Froschkönig oder der eiserne Heinrich der Brüder Grimm. Mittels eines detaillierten Textvergleichs werden inhaltliche und stilistische Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede herausgearbeitet. Sodann werden poetische, pädagogische und politische Intentionen und Implikationen untersucht, die mit den einzelnen Übersetzungen verbunden sind. This article takes as its starting point the observation that in periods when language, culture, and society are under oppression – in Korea under Japanese colonial occupation, for instance – translations are often employed as a means of education, liberation, and modernization. Three Korean renditions of the Grimms' fairy tale 'Der Froschkönig oder der eiserne Heinrich' ('The Frog Prince; or, Iron Henry') from the 1920s are presented as examples of this. Commonalities and differences in content and style are brought to light by means of a detailed textual comparison. Dieser Beitrag rekapituliert die Illustrationsgeschichte zu den Kinder- und Hausmärchen in Korea. Nach einem Überblick über drei Phasen (1910 bis 1923, 1945 bis 1989, 1990 bis heute) werden exemplarisch einzelne Illustrationen aus drei Publikationen untersucht, und zwar: 1. aus Dongmyeong(Ex Oriente Lux), die eine der populärsten Zeitschriften in den frühen 1920er Jahren war; 2. Illustrationen von Hong Seong-Chan aus der 1964 erschienenen Ausgabe Grimms Märchenanthologie, die als Meilenstein der Übersetzungsgeschichte gilt und mit ihren Illustrationen Maßstäbe gesetzt hat. Schließlich werden 3. Illustrationen von Park Eunji vorgestellt, die in der vorbildlichen Ausgabe Die Volkserzählungen der Brüder Grimm (2012) erschienen sind. Ein besonderes Augenmerk legt die Darstellung darauf, Anpassungen an die koreanische Kultur und Lebensweise herauszuarbeiten. Jedoch weist der Forschungsstand immer noch Lücken auf, die auch in diesem Beitrag nicht geschlossen werden können und die vor allem die Zeit von 1924 bis 1945 betreffen. This article reviews the history of illustrations for the Kinder- und Hausmärchen in Korea. After an overview of three phases (1910–1923, 1945–1989, 1990–present), illustrative examples from three publications are examined: (i) from Dongmyeong(Ex Oriente Lux), one of the most popular weeklies of the early 1920s; (ii) illustrations by Hong Seong-Chan from the Korean Anthology of theGrimms' Fairy Tales, published in 1964, which is considered a landmark in translations of the tales and whose illustrations set the standard for subsequent ones; and (iii) illustrations by Park Eunji in the admirable Korean Grimm brothers' Folk Tales from 2012. The discussion is particularly concerned to bring to light adaptations to Korean life and culture. Dieser Bericht gibt einen Überblick über die wissenschaftliche, aber auch die politische Rezeption der Kinder- und Hausmärchen (KHM) in Korea seit 1910 bis heute. Vor dem Hintergrund kolonialer, gesellschaftlicher und kultureller Verhältnisse wurden Grimms Märchen immer wieder aufgegriffen und übersetzt. Drei Probleme waren dabei zentral: die Frage der nationalen Selbstständigkeit und der Volksaufklärung unter japanischer Herrschaft bis 1945; die Frage der Individualisierung mitsamt Identitätskonflikten im Zuge der Industrialisierung und Verstädterung in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren; die Gender-Perspektive seit den 1990er Jahren. Darüber hinaus betrachtete man die KHM seit 2000 oft im Zusammenhang mit ihrer medialen Umsetzung wie E-Book, Animation, Film, Webtoon. Forschungen zu diesen Problemkreisen finden in Korea in zahlreichen Disziplinen statt, allen voran in der Germanistik und in der Koreanistik, sodann in der Allgemeinen und Vergleichenden Literaturwissenschaft, der Linguistik, der Erziehungswissenschaft, der Psychologie sowie in der Medien- und Kulturwissenschaft. Koreanische Wissenschaftler haben Ergebnisse aus westlichen Studien nicht nur eifrig rezipiert, sondern auch mit eigenen Untersuchungen zur Erforschung der KHM beigetragen. This article gives an overview of the scholarly, but also the political reception of the Kinder- und Hausmärchen in Korea from 1910 to the present day. The Grimms' fairy tales were repeatedly taken up and translated against the background of colonial, social, and cultural conditions. Three issues were of central importance in this process: the question of national identity and education under Japanese rule down to 1945, the question of individualization and conflicts of identity in the course of industrialization and urbanization in the 1970s and 1980s, and, since the 1990s, the perspective of gender. In addition, since 2000 the Kinder- und Hausmärchen have often been considered in terms of adaptations in various media, such as e-books, animations, films, and webtoons. Research on these topics is taking place in numerous disciplines in Korea, above all German Studies and Korean Studies, but also in Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Child Development, Psychology, and Media and Cultural Studies. Korean scholars have not only been a receptive audience for findings from Western research but have also contributed to the study of the Kinder- und Hausmärchen with their own scholarship. Der Beitrag untersucht den kulturellen und kolonialistischen Kontext, aus denen heraus Grimms Märchen in den 1920er Jahren in Korea übersetzt wurden. Es wird gezeigt, wie und inwiefern diese Übersetzungen der Strategie folgten, die japanische Kolonialherrschaft anzuklagen und sich zugleich der kulturellen Eigenständigkeit Koreas zu versichern. Der Fokus richtet sich auf grausame Szenen in Grimms Märchen, die einerseits wortgetreu, andererseits abmildernd übersetzt wurden. Dabei spielte die erste Richtung auf Grausamkeiten der Kolonialmacht an und pointierte die Bestrafung des Bösen, die zweite setzte mehr auf die Erziehung von Kindern und Jugendlichen als den Hoffnungsträgern für die Zukunft der Nation. Damit folgten koreanische Übersetzer wie Choi Nam Seon und Bang Jeong Hwan nicht zuletzt Intentionen, wie sie die Brüder Grimm unter napoleonischer Herrschaft in Deutschland vertreten hatten. This article examines the cultural and colonial context in which the Grimms' fairy tales were translated in Korea in the 1920s. It is shown how, and to what extent, these translations pursued the strategy of criticizing Japanese colonial rule and at the same time laying claim to Korea's cultural identity. The focus is on brutal scenes in the Grimms' tales that were on the one hand treated literally, on the other toned down in translation. The first tendency alluded to the cruelty of the colonial power and foregrounded the punishment of evil; the second was directed more at raising children and young people as sources of hope for the nation's future. In this way, the intentions pursued by Korean translators such as Choi Nam Seon and Bang Jeong Hwan recall not least those that characterized the Brothers Grimm in Germany under Napoleonic control. Most micronations located in South Korea have only a virtual existence and little, if any, public recognition. The exception is Nami Island, which branded itself as the Naminara Republic in 2006, and is a popular and financially successful tourist resort. This article considers aspects of place-branding applied to Nami Island and draws comparisons with the eponymous setting of the acclaimed television series Hotel Del Luna (2018). The physical island and the virtual hotel share many components of a micronation schema, although the hotel is not a self-declared micronation. Both are embedded within, but culturally separate from, the surrounding state. Each has evolved an origin myth and a sustaining mythic narrative developed from contemporary Korean media-lore: Nami Island markets itself as a fairy tale space and exploits images from the popular TV drama Winter Sonata, which lures many of its visitors, while Hotel Del Luna draws upon and adds to media-lore about ghosts and the supernatural. Commercial enterprises which playfully assert their cultural separation from South Korea, these micronations self-consciously model a utopianism markedly absent in the country which surrounds them. We developed a game-based training system to analyse and improve the reading ability of children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). A fairy tale-based interactive narrative is used as an intervention strategy in the behaviour training system, which collects brainwaves and motion-sensing data during treatment. The system includes fairy tales as well as attention and behaviour-related tasks coupled with a brain-computer interface (BCI) and motion-sensing technology. The treatment for the children (N = 5) diagnosed with ADHD was performed for five weeks on a weekly basis, comprised of one 20-minute long adaptation session and four 40-minute long sessions. For the quantitative analysis of the treatment, pre- and post- KNISE-BAAT and general reading questionnaires were administered. Sensing data was also recorded. In-depth post-interviews were conducted after the completion of the treatment programme for qualitative analysis. The paired-samples t-test on both reading comprehension tests indicate improvement in both reading aloud and reading comprehension. The sensing data analysis shows improvements in attention span and decreases in hyperactive behaviour over time. The analysis on the interview data supports the quantitative test results. As such, the test results indicate that this approach helps children with ADHD improve their reading ability, increase their attention span, and support behavioural inhibition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
