The article discusses the Sri Lankan Tamil cinema. Over a period of a quarter of a century, almost 30 attempts were done to produce Tamil films in Sri Lanka. Although the Sri Lankan film industry in its early days were reigned by Tamils, none of them made a severe effort to produce Tamil films. Instead, they made copies of Indian Tamil and Hindi box-office hits in Sinhalese under the pretext of encouraging the local Sinhala film industry. Passionate individuals influenced by the South Indian cinema like Sivaji and M. G. Ramachandran tried to create local versions of the South Indian cinema but they ended in finacial and artistic disaster. Even though limited in scope, the films "Kuththu Vilakku," "Vaadai Kaattu" and "Ponmani," reflected the lives and times of the Sri Lankan Tamils.
