This paper draws on a two-year project on "Teaching Literature in the Multicultural Classroom" undertaken in 2007 and 2008, and involving seven teacher-researchers in seven schools in South and West Auckland. This article gives an overview of the project, indicating its conceptualisation, research design and some of its findings, with a particular emphasis on practices found to be effective in enhancing students' motivation in a range of literature-related competencies, and on instances where these were mediated by information and communication technologies (ICT). It concludes by identifying a range of challenges, including research challenges, for the teaching of literature and literacy in the New Zealand/Aotearoa setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
