Vector-borne diseases (VBD) are particularly susceptible to climate change because most of the diseases' vectors are ectotherms, which themselves are susceptible to thermal changes. The Chagas disease is one neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi. One of the main vectors of the Chagas disease in South America is Triatoma infestans, a species traditionally considered to be restricted to domestic or peridomestic habitats, but sylvatic foci have also been described along its distribution. The infestation of wild individuals, together with the projections of environmental changes due to global warming, urge the need to understand the relationship between temperature and the vector's performance. Here, we evaluated the impact of temperature variability on the thermal response of T. infestans. We acclimated individuals to six thermal treatments for five weeks to then estimate their thermal performance curves (TPCs) by measuring the walking speed of the individuals. We found that the TPCs varied with thermal acclimation and body mass. Individuals acclimated to a low and variable ambient temperature (18°C ± 5°C) exhibited lower performances than those individuals acclimated to an optimal temperature (27°C ± 0°C); while those individuals acclimated to a low but constant temperature (18°C ± 0°C) did not differ in their maximal performance from those at an optimal temperature. Additionally, thermal variability (i.e., ± 5°C) at a high temperature (30°C) increased performance. These results evidenced the plastic response of T. infestans to thermal acclimation. This plastic response and the non-linear effect of thermal variability on the performance of T. infestans posit challenges when predicting changes in the vector's distribution range under climate change., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

The Paraguayan Chaco is an isolated environment with its own unique ecosystem. In this region, Chagas disease remains a health problem. Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi , and it is primarily transmitted by triatomines. In order to identify the blood meal sources of triatomines, specimens of the vector were collected in domestic and peridomestic areas and the PCR-RFLP method was implemented. Cytochrome b was amplified from the samples and later subjected to digestion with two restriction enzymes: Hae III and Xho I.It was possible to generate distinct restriction patterns on the amplified material to identify several blood meal sources for the vectors. We employed the blood from several species as positive controls: human, chicken, canine, feline, and armadillo blood. However, we identified only 3 sources for the blood meals of the insect vectors: human, chicken and canine blood. In total, 76 triatomines were captured. T. cruzi was not found in any of them. In 61% of the captured specimens, the blood meal sources for the vectors could be identified. In 30% of these cases, the presence of DNA from more than one vertebrate was detected in the same triatomine. The most common blood meal source found was chicken blood. The presence of human and chicken blood in triatomines captured in domestic and peridomestic areas strongly suggests that the parasite can freely move amongst both areas regardless of food availability. Free vector movement in these areas constitutes an epidemiological threat for the inhabitants of the community under study.

Triatoma infestans Klug (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) populations were sampled in various localities throughout most of the species' geographic range of distribution in Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru. In order to contribute to understanding of the diversity and population structure of this major vector of Chagas' disease, cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profiles were analysed by capillary gas chromatography and variations evaluated by statistical methods of classification and ordination. High levels of intrapopulation variation were detected, along with low levels of variability among populations. Based on relative amounts of the major odd-numbered straight-chain hydrocarbons n-C27 to n-C33, two hydrocarbon phenotypes were evident, unequally distributed along the species' geographic range. Analysis of CHC patterns showed that T. infestans populations segregate into two major groups consisting of an Andean group, which comprises specimens from Peru and most parts of Bolivia, and a non-Andean group, which includes all specimens from Argentina and Paraguay, together with those from Tarija (Bolivia). Due to its vast diversity the Chagas vector, Triatoma dimidiata, has been merged and split into species and subspecies since its first description in 1811. Across its geographic range from Southern Mexico to Northern Peru populations differ in their biology and ethology in many ways including those that directly affect vector capacity and competence. Recent phenetic and genetic data suggest that T. dimidiata can be divided into at least three clades and in fact may be a polytypic species or species complex. To effectively target this vector, it will be necessary to clearly understand how "T. dimidiata" is genetically partitioned both at the taxonomic and population level.

The expected success of Chagas disease control programs in the Southern Cone countries relied on the assumption that Triatoma infestans, the main domestic vector, did not maintain silvatic foci except in the Cochabamba valley in Bolivia. Recent fieldwork revealed that wild populations of this vector are much more widespread throughout Bolivia than previously thought. Therefore, it is important to find out whether these silvatic populations could jeopardize control efforts in Bolivia, and to investigate their possible occurrence in neighboring regions of Paraguay and Argentina.
