The article comments on the paper "Race and Culture: Writing the Ethnohistory of the Early South," by Theda Perdue. It argues that the use of the term mestizos have been part of a broad discussion about culture and imperialism and was used by scholars to reflect the in-betweeness of American people living in colonized regions. It offers a review on the study of Perdue and suggest that race and racial hierarchy are essential to formations of power and resistance in the post-contact Americas.
