The vast territorial expansion of Portugal during the colonial era resulted in a significant global diaspora network, with one such community situated in South Africa. Multiple waves of immigration from Portugal, its autonomous regions, and former African colonies have given rise to an established diasporic community in South Africa. Acting as a vital communication channel, the O Século de Joanesburgo newspaper played a crucial role in keeping the South African Portuguese diaspora informed about the broader Portuguese community both locally and abroad, thereby fostering connections between the community and their homeland. Throughout the years, the newspaper extensively featured travel-related content, employing various strategies to encourage travel to the homeland. This paper investigates how travel was depicted and promoted to the South African Portuguese diaspora through the newspaper. Using archival material from the newspaper, significant themes can be identified related to travel within the community. These encompass journeys to the homeland, encouragement for seaside property investments in Portugal, and indications of domestic tourism within South Africa. Overall, this research contributes to the broader discourse on the development of diasporic communities and emphasizes the integral role of travel in their existence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Southern African countries have a good cultural tourism development potential, and many countries in the region have identified the development of cultural tourism as one of the key growth areas in tourism. A specific element of cultural tourism is based on crafts that are sold for visitors in various sites and market places. Crafts and craft markets are relatively visible in the Southern African tourism landscape. While these sites have the potential to provide a significant amount of employment and economic benefits, they have been relatively little studied in the region. This paper aims to focus on craft tourism and craft markets as a specific form of and attraction site for cultural tourism. The empirical example utilizes a mixed method case study approach by looking at tourists' craft consumption at a selected market site in Windhoek, Namibia. According to the results the direct economic impacts were relatively modest in monetary terms. In general the interviewed tourists valued the local character of the crafts but only half of them indicated that they would prefer the locally-made aspect as the key selection criterion of a purchase. It is concluded that this emphasis can influence negatively on the local sustainability of craft-based cultural tourism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cultural tourism is highlighted as one of the most important development opportunities for Africa. In the region of southern Africa cultural tourism is of rising significance both for tourists and policy makers. The task in this article is to provide an overview of the expanding opportunities and debates pertaining to cultural tourism development in southern Africa. In tourism cultural villages are relatively new attractions which have opened opportunities for the advancement of cultural and heritage tourism in developing countries. However, there is a lack of research pertaining to residents' perceptions of cultural villages for tourism. This paper aims to examine residents' perspectives of and support for the development of Bahurutshe cultural village for tourism in Mmankgodi, Botswana. Semi-structured questionnaires and interviews were employed to collect the research materials. The findings indicate that although a significant number of residents show support, differences were echoed in the rating of negative statements such as reduced residential and grazing lands; owners not giving back to the community and small contribution to the economic development of Mmankgodi village. Recommendations are that local people should be encouraged to become active subjects in development and initiate community-based cultural village for tourism from which they could derive tangible benefits.
