The article focuses on a study that investigated the timing of the stages of pregnancy over two non-consecutive years in a population of Miniopterus natalensis in a maternity roost in the De Hoop Nature Reserve in South Africa. The researchers analysed the maternal features such as body mass and abdominal distension to determine if they provided a reliable estimate of embryonic stage. The important role played by progestorone in blastocyst implantation and its use as a potential indicator of the progression of pregnancy were also discussed.
